Origin Spreadsheet Set-Up Details:

Go to Start Pearl and open Origin Pro 2015 64-Bit

A “Start Up Tips” window will pop up on the screen—click “Close”

A “Maintenance Reminder” window will pop up on the screen—click “No”

You will see a small window with two yellow and white columns labeled as A(X) and B(Y). The entire

window is labeled “Book 1” in the top left of your screen. Maximize this window.

Click on “Column” in the grey toolbar. Click on “Add New Columns…” (4th option down). Type in the

number of columns you wish to add into the pop-up window, which will appear in the center of the

page. I usually start with 15 columns, but you can always add more as you’re working! Click OK and

your columns will be added to the right-hand side of the data sheet.

Page 2: Go to Start Pearl and open Origin Pro 2015 64-Bit A “Start ... and...17. If you open SAP to resume song analysis and you see that your syllable table is gone, click the ^Open syllable

Double click on the top of the first column on the far left side of the screen (Labeled A(X)).

A “Column Properties” Window will pop up. This is how you will name all of your columns. You can

type the name of the column into the “Short Name” or the “Long Name” line. The specific column titles

that you need to type into the Origin columns are: syllable duration (Label as Duration), mean pitch

(Label as MPitch), mean FM (Label as MFM), mean entropy (Label as Entropy), and variance entropy

(Label as EV). Include if the data is from pre/post 1,2, or 3 months in the column title as well.

EXAMPLE:

Go to the “Options” portion at the bottom of the “Column Properties” Window and click on the drag-

down menu next to the “Digits” subcategory.

Click on “Set Decimal Places=” and then change the default number 3 in the “Decimal Number”

subcategory to the number 2. (Shown above in example)

Click “OK” and you have successfully labeled your column.

When you are labeling a blank column as Duration, you must identify this column as “X,” which can be

found under the “Plot Designation” drag-down menu from the “Options” Tab. However, the remainder

of your columns can stay labeled as “Y” until you reach another column that you are going to label as

Duration.

How to Create Origin Graphs:

Click on the grey part at the top of the individual column you wish to select. This will turn the entire

column black. Then, press and hold the control key and click on the other individual columns you want

to analyze against the column you first selected. When you have chosen everything you want to put into

a graph, your spreadsheet will look like this:

Page 4: Go to Start Pearl and open Origin Pro 2015 64-Bit A “Start ... and...17. If you open SAP to resume song analysis and you see that your syllable table is gone, click the ^Open syllable

Now, go to the grey toolbar and click on “Plot.”

Scroll over the second option, “Symbol,” and click on its extension, which is “Scatter.”

Then, a new window will open with your desired graph.

You can change the x- or y-axes by double clicking on one of the values. It will send you to a window to

readjust the scales.

When you want to save your origin file, you will just click on “File” in the grey toolbar and then click

“Save Project As…”

If you want to minimize your graph, click on the minimize button that is below the usual minimize

button.

This will take you back to the main grey page. All of your graphs and the “Book 1” Spreadsheet will be

at the bottom of this page. Maximize the “Book 1” tab to get back to your spreadsheet to enter more data

and/or create more graphs.

Data Analysis in Song Analysis Pro (SAP)

Creating a Syllable Table:

1. Open SAP program.

2. Click “Explore and Score.”

3. Input a sound file into the Sound 1 Tab (it should be the first tab that opens after Step 2). Click "Open Sound" in the middle of the page all the way to the left and then find your desired file from our shared folder.

4. Always make sure you have the “full file” button selected when choosing your file to open. If you do not do this, you

will get a corrupt file. You can also preview the motif(s) in this file from this window.

5. Double click on the file name or click OK and the sound file will open in SAP.

6. Now, you want to adjust the amplitude in order to make sure all syllables will be counted appropriately. You do this by moving the arrow under the yellow box until all syllables have a nice “cushion” of maroon under them.

Maroon “cushion”

Amplitude arrow

7. Once you feel that the amplitude is appropriate for these syllables, you should NOT touch the amplitude arrow for the remainder of your analysis (for consistency purposes).

8. As seen above, there is a vertical red line and a vertical blue line on the screen. This is how you segment motifs in

order to count syllables. You click once on the beginning of the motif to place the red line and you click once at the end of the motif to place the blue line.

9. Once a motif is segmented, you will need to begin adding each motif to a syllable table. To do this, you need to click

on the “New Syllable Table” button and then name your syllable table according to which day and bird you are using. (I

made up the bird Red391PreDec5 for my title as an example).

10. Click OK to finish naming your syllable table.

11. Now, we begin adding our manually segmented motifs to our new syllable table. You do this by clicking the “Add

records to table” button at the bottom of the SAP window. (Note: You will segment a majority of the sound files for each experiment type, such as one month post-surgery, in order to reach at least 300 syllables in each syllable table.)

12. Make sure that you have selected the “Auto-segment all” bubble to the left of the screen under the “Open Sound” button. If you do not do this, SAP will not count the appropriate number of syllables within the motif you segmented.

Page 7: Go to Start Pearl and open Origin Pro 2015 64-Bit A “Start ... and...17. If you open SAP to resume song analysis and you see that your syllable table is gone, click the ^Open syllable

13. Always double check that SAP is counting the correct number of syllables that you see when you segment the m otifs.

If there is an error, you can always click the “delete all data” button and start new or click the “delete last row” button

to get rid of the incorrect syllable information and move on to a new sound file.

14. Once you have reached 300 or more syllables in your table, you will want to click the “Export Table to Excel” button in the bottom right corner. Once you click this button, an Excel spreadsheet with all of your syllables will pop up.

15. SAVE THIS document immediately and label it as the bird, the date, and if it was pre- or post-surgery.

16. In the Comments column of the Excel spreadsheet, it helps to type in the amplitude number you were using (the

number in the tiny yellow box on the upper left of the screen). This way if you need to stop analysis, you can correctly

set the amplitude you were previously using.

17. If you open SAP to resume song analysis and you see that your syllable table is gone, click the “Open syllable table”

button underneath the “New syllable table” button and select the syllable table you want to continue working on. Everything should be saved for you in your desired syllable table.

Similarity Batch:

1. Open SAP program.

2. Click "Explore and Score."

3. Input a sound file into the Sound 1 Tab (it should be the first tab that opens after Step 2). Click "Open Sound" in the

middle of the page all the way to the left and then finding your desired file from our shared folder.

4. Input a different syllable file into the Sound 2 Tab using the same instructions from Step 3.

5. Select the gray "Similarity" Tab, then click "Symmetric" and "Time-courses" (found in the mid-left side of the page again).

Page 8: Go to Start Pearl and open Origin Pro 2015 64-Bit A “Start ... and...17. If you open SAP to resume song analysis and you see that your syllable table is gone, click the ^Open syllable

6. Select the gray "Similarity Batch" tab. Delete all previous data shown in the table on the left hand side of the page using the "delete all" button.

7. From the drag-down menu on the top-left of the page, select the shared folder, then select the song analysis folder and the desired syllables you want to compare. (I did syllable B as an example for these instructions).

8. Click on the Sound 1 Box to make it yellow. Highlight all syllable B files (in no particular order) and click "add" into t he

Sound 1 Box.

Page 9: Go to Start Pearl and open Origin Pro 2015 64-Bit A “Start ... and...17. If you open SAP to resume song analysis and you see that your syllable table is gone, click the ^Open syllable

9. Now, click on the Sound 2 Box, highlight only Syllable B1 and click "add" into the Sound 2 box.

10. Make sure that the bubble is filled in for "score by pairs" on the bottom of the page, and then click the "Do it now!"

button to the right of the "score by pairs" bubble.

11. After this data appears in the table to the left of the page, highlight the remaining Syllable B files (in no particular order--just DO NOT include Syllable B1 again) and click "add" into the Sound 2 Box underneath Syllable B1.
