Even with preparation, however, some outages are inevitable. Here are some lesser-known tips to keep in mind this storm season: Lightning Storms: Lightning can travel along the home's electrical system to appliances still plugged in. Using or even standing near plugged-in electrical appliances is dangerous during thunderstorms. Using electrical devices like corded telephones, personal computers and television sets presents a danger to you as well as to the appliance. Unplug electrical appliances before a thunderstorm to save the device (and you) from being damaged. Experts also recommend turning the home's air conditioning system or heat pump off during thunderstorms as this will help protect the compressor from being damaged. Brownouts: A brownout is caused by depressed (or low) voltage. They are hard on electronics and appliances with motors, like refrigerators, furnaces, and most electronic equipment. The best thing to do when experiencing a brownout is to unplug that type of equipment or throw the main breaker in your home until full power is restored. Property Access: Please notify us if you have installed a lock or gate that would prevent us from accessing your meter. Not allowing access to your meter may cause delays to service restoration during an outage. Call 541-746-1583 and we can make a dual lock or other special arrangement. Emergency Help: During a power outage, persons in need of electricity for medical equipment can contact the Red Cross for information on local facilities that can accommodate them. They can be reached at 541-344-5244 or www.oregonpacific.redcross.org. EPUD must restore power in a systematic way and cannot give any customers preferential treatment in these instances. It’s important for individuals to have a personal plan in place to cover their own needs during an outage. Two EPUD Employees Receive National Recognition

Did you know EPUD can help you install insulation, windows, and duct sealing in your home? In partnership with First Tech Credit Union, we offer zero-interest loans of up to $4,000 and $500 rebates for weatherization projects. Where needed, our contractors can install insulation in the attic, floor, and walls, add appropriate ventilation, install a moisture barrier, wrap hot water pipes and duct work, and weatherstrip windows and doors. EPUD also works with Lane County to weatherize low-income customers. Qualifying households can have up to 100% of their weatherization costs paid for.To see if you qualify, call EPUD at 541-746-1583 and schedule a

free Home Energy Analysis. An Energy Analyst will visit your home to determine what measures are needed, a process that takes about two hours. We have limited funds for weatherization, and each year the budget is quickly committed to customers' projects. Contact us right away to reserve your spot in the program. In general, permanent homes, rental homes, manufactured/mobile homes, and multi-family units may qualify if the primary heat source is electric. For more information, visit www.epud.org, Conservation/Energy Savings, Weatherization Programs or call us at 541-746-1583.

Weatherize Your Home with EPUD!

Two EPUD employees were nationally recognized by the American Public Power Association (APPA) as “Rising Stars in Public Power.” Jaime Cranmer, Customer Service & Communications Manager, and Richard Gunn, Meterman, are among 60 public power workers selected in the United States for the honor. Recipients were featured in the September issue of APPA’s Public Power Magazine.

Jaime Cranmer has worked at EPUD for 15 years, and is only 33. During that time, she has been promoted seven times, from a high school office assistant to her current role as Customer Service & Communications Manager. She has overseen many successful projects at EPUD and has also managed to have three children during this time, including twins.

Richard Gunn has worked at EPUD for 13 years. He has moved from temporary AutoCAD assistant to Meterman and will soon become a Substation Meterman. He has overseen many successful projects at EPUD while simultaneously completing a dual apprenticeship, and also fathered triplets during this time.
