It’s the only travel and tourism magazine in Britain – and possibly around the planet – that’s focused exclusively on the growing self-catering sector worldwide … no hotels (except those that offer self-catering accommodation); no B&Bs; no cruises; and no adventure trekking holidays – but instead, everything from cottages in Cumbria and Cornwall to apartments and villas i... Welcome . . .… to Britain’s newest holidays magazine, and the only one that’s dedicated exclusively to self-catering vacations in Britain and around the world. We very much hope it will be a worthy successor to Holiday Villas and Holiday Cottages magazines, which I had the privi-lege of editing from 2004 until 2009. I’ve missed my involvement with readers, property owners and travel companies – and, truth be told, the occasional opportunity to take holidays that wouldn’t normally be within my budget – so it’s great to be back.

There’s no denying that the times are a lot tougher – for holidaymakers and businesses in the leisure industries – than they were when I was last editing travel magazines. In Britain, the budgets of working families and pensioners have been badly bashed about by unemployment, wage cuts and basement-level interest rates for savers. The economies of tourism-dependent countries in southern Europe have been all but wrecked by the euro – and the euro crisis – and their ability to recover quickly through devaluation and consequent price cuts is no longer available to them.

But we still need holidays, and the self-catering sector in Britain, the US and Europe is well-placed to offer budget-conscious travellers not only the flexibility that hotels can rarely provide, but also price tags that are more attractive than ever.

In this debut issue, Gillian Thornton enjoys a relaxing get-away in North Devon, and looks across the Channel to Normandy, which this year is celebrating the work of France’s great Impressionist painters. Juliet Rix extols the joys of Italy’s Amalfi Coast and tells us about the re-invention of Malta’s fortress capital, Valetta, where opportunities for self-catering holidays in historic houses are opening up.

John Law reports on what are likely to be 2013’s big vacation trends, Lesley Dolby has tips for people weighing up the pros and cons of the Florida holiday home market, Diana Cambridge explains how foodies can make their self-catering cottage a home-from-home, and we take a look at what Jersey – 100 miles but a world away from mainland Britain – has to offer.

If you’re thinking about planning a spring or summer break – and wanting to find the holiday cottage, villa or apartment that’s just right for you – this is the place to start!

Departures

CORNWALL is rightly famed for its magnificent sandy beaches, and one of the best in the county – and England – is at Carbis Bay on the North Cornish coast, a mile or so from St. Ives.

It offers 25 acres of golden sand, every square inch of which is owned by The Carbis Bay Hotel & Apartments. The beach and its waters – warmed by the Gulf Stream – have been awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness.

Carbis Bay is an ideal centre for touring the county’s west coast and its wild moorland, and the valleys and inlets on the south coast.

St Ives, linked via the South West Coastal Footpath and a rail branch line from Carbis Bay, was named Best UK Coast-al Resort by the British Travel Association in 2011.

Attractions there include the West Country branch of London’s Tate Gallery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. Land’s End and The Lizard are a short drive away, as are the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project. Other superb beaches include Whitesands at Sennen Cove and the three miles of golden sands at Gwith-ian, Hayle.

Cornwall’s mining heritage can be seen at several nearby sites including Geevor, just along the coast from St Ives.

Where life’s a beach

Be a happy camper . . .FOR A self-catering break with a difference, there’s Camp Bestival, a four-day (August 1-4) festival of family fun in the grounds of Lulworth Castle on the Dorset Jurassic coast.

It offers a packed programme of music on multiple stages and family entertainment including comedy, theatre, dance, sideshows and sport – with a big emphasis on keeping young children occupied and happy.

Camping is a necessity; there are a great many acts crammed into the four days, and guests wouldn’t want to miss any.

Luxury tents, tipis, yurts, bivouacs, airstreams, and gypsy caravans are available for hire, or guests can bring their own tents.

There’s also a babysitting service to give parents a break after lights-out for the kids.

Performers at last year’s Camp Bestival included Earth, Wind & Fire, the English National Ballet, and the Happy Mondays.

“This was our first family festival,” said Angela Suter, who took her husband and daughter to last year’s event.

“It had been in the planning for us since November the pre-vious year, so there was plenty of time for the excitement to build.

“Would it be all we imag-ined? We were not disap-pointed. It was an absolutely fantastic weekend. Would we go again? Yes!”

IF YOU were enjoying a holiday in rural Wales last year and saw a vicar and his wife driving a seven-tonne tractor, you might have wondered where they were going, and why.

The Rev Richard Kirlew tells all: “As the spokesman on Rural Affairs for the Church in Wales, I felt called to raise the profile of farming issues such as isola-tion and poverty.

“We also decided to drive around Wales, calling at all six cathedrals and raising money for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, the Farm Crisis Network and my own seven tiny parishes in the Radnorshire hills.

“The collection was very much a sprat to catch a mack-

erel – enabling us to talk to people about rural issues.

“JE Lawrence in Pembroke-shire agreed to help by supply-ing a tractor – a JCB Fastrac. It did 40mph flat out! We pulled in regularly to let faster drivers pass, and lorries flashed their lights in a supportive way.

“Our 700-mile journey took us to St David’s, Bangor, the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, New-port, Cardiff and Brecon.

“We raised £3,500 and money is still coming in. You may be sure that it is all going to very good causes.”

For more details about the venture, e-mail [email protected] or telephone 01982 551288.
