Little Steps Preschool Kids Turn Crusaders For A Cleaner City

Why this Campaign?

COMPLAIN FROM KIDS & “BIG QUESTIONS FROM LITTLE ONES” - DROVE US TO DO THIS CAMPAIGN!!!!!

• Pollution is increasing as construction has increased in a big way, this being an

upcoming Posh Locality. This is increasing the temperature and reducing the water level in this area so the idea is to plant trees to protect this environmental degradation.

• Residents and people are clearing their Dustbins and Garbage on the roadside. • People have relatively less space. Proper dustbins / covered bins are not

provided. • No garbage collection is being undertaken by the Government in this Locality. • So the Campaign: PLANT A TREE, KEEP CLEAN - GO GREEN!!!

Why this Area ?

• It is an upcoming area having people from different regions with at least 950 houses or more and construction is in full swing. A onetime Green place is getting converted into a Concrete jungle.

• Educating the Residents is most important to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. • No proper and particular attention is being paid from Government and other

NGOs dealing with environment to this particular place.

GO GREEN CAMPAIGN 2011

Spread the Green, Save the Planet “Go Green” is the resolve to “infect the whole of Bhubaneswar with the will to change towards a greener future”. Little Steps Pre-School, Bhubaneswar has tied up with Centre for environmental development, Trivandrum and Kalinga Development Foundation, Bhubaneswar work on several programmes under this initiative. “Plant a Sapling” and “Take a Pledge” programmes were launched in the campaign this time.

What We Did at Little Steps Preschool, before we lead the campaign to the nearby locality? Little Steps discussed the plan of doing the campaign for a week with the kid’s parents and with the co-partners before doing the campaign. We tried to inculcate the ten basic requirements in the kid’s system so that wherever they go they would follow the same and make people follow the same in the times to come. We got feedback from parents that the kids have started directing few things to be followed in their house. This drove us to take the initiative of spreading the environmental awareness among the residents through these small kids whose words are taken more seriously considering the emotional bond with the kid. Many did it more to please the kids and keep their word even if they were indisciplined earlier. Showing Children what it Means to “Go Green” With the recent celebration of the Go Green Campaign Week from 23rd -30th Jan 2011, we wanted to take advantage of the opportunities we had to teach our children the 3 Rs of “Reduce-Reuse-Recycle”.

Page 6: Go Green_Closure Report 2011 Final

Little Steps Preschool, Nandan Vihar, Patia, Bhubaneswar -24 Page No 6

We taught the preschoolers what it means to Go Green using the 3 Rs in relation to trash reduction. We started with the Tiny Tots Parents the importance of creating less trash and consuming fewer resources is necessary for the future of our planet. Here is how they were told to do their part: REDUCE: Before you Own It, Always Ask “Do I Really Need This?” There are many ways to reduce the family’s total product consumption, but here’s one that every age can relate to.

• Use fewer paper napkins or better yet, use reusable napkins. There’s no need to grab a huge stack of napkins from the concession stand when you know you’ll use only one or two.

• Use a cloth bag instead of paper bags and definitely against polythene. • Try to take a cloth bag in the next shopping trips.

REUSE: Before you Trash It, Always Ask “Can this be reused in Some Way?”

• Reuse packaging. Jars can be reused to store food, leftovers, crayons, pencils, and all sorts of things.

• Make gifts, crafts, and other fun stuff. It’s a great way to reuse things like old magazines, egg cartons, film canisters, cardboard tubes and boxes that might have otherwise been thrown away.

• Pack a waste-free lunch when your kids are school-age. Use a reusable lunchbox, reusable drink containers and cloth napkins.

• When you do use disposables like plastic cups, plates, utensils, and plastic food storage bags, don’t throw them away! Wash and reuse them -- most of them will last for a long time with many uses. Remind your kids that due to a lack of sun and air, it takes more than 100 years for a plastic sandwich bag to decompose in a landfill (even the biodegradable ones).

• Reuse old bed sheets and towels and cotton diapers. They can still be reused as wiping rags in your home or for washing cars instead of using paper towels.

Page 7: Go Green_Closure Report 2011 Final

Little Steps Preschool, Nandan Vihar, Patia, Bhubaneswar -24 Page No 7

• Save old newspapers. They work better than paper towels for cleaning windows.

• Take reusable cloth bags on shopping trips. • Turn your Trash into Cash. Don’t throw away the clothes and toys your kids

have outgrown. Remember: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Donate it to a school like ours. It’s local and it’s free.

• Take a field trip to a landfill to help your kids understand there is no “away” in “throwing things away.” This is when you have the best opportunity to teach the importance of recycling and reusing. Call your garbage collection facility before you go.

RECYCLE: Ask: “If it can’t be Reused, Can it be Recycled?” Recycling is one earth-friendly activity kids of all ages can get involved in. Children can learn what items regularly used in their homes can be recycled, from soft drink cans and milk bottles. Toddlers and preschoolers can participate in separating and grouping recyclables. Make up a fun recycling game where your kids guess whether something you name is recyclable. There’s a Chinese Proverb that says: “Tell me, I’ll forget. Show me, I may remember. But involve me and I’ll understand.” That is the reason why Little Steps had taken the initiative of involving kids and their parents in the same campaign. Once they get involved they would practice the same at home and at least some change in the society would drive others to change their attitude and perception towards the environment. They should feel it is their environment, they are polluting, and they are responsible for the effects.

Almost 150 houses covered and pledges received. Considering 4 family members in each house, we could reach to almost 600 people on the same day. All the 10 steps mentioned in the leaflets were coded 1-10 for the convenience of people to write their pledge just by mentioning the numbers. People were reluctant to write the pledges as they felt it becomes mandatory for them to obey it after they write. We felt that, the turn out percentage would be at least 7%-9% considering the people’s reactions. We encouraged residents to follow 10 easy steps in life to make the environment clean and green. Representative of KDF was there in the campaign. Out of all 150 houses written pledges received were only 100.

Most of the pledges we got people stated that they would follow at least the following steps

• Save water,

• Switch off lights when not in use,

• Plant a tree to save life

• Use dustbins (3Rs) &

• Switch off the vehicles on the traffic.

Taking a pledge in writing has some impact on people

• The garbage which was earlier thrown on the streets has stopped. People are now at least taking the pain of walking towards the dustbin to throw the garbage.

• The local water house has taken the conscious step of not overloading water tanks in the resident’s houses.

• People are trying to minimize their electricity use.

• Conscious kids are reminding their parents to stop the vehicles on the traffic.

• People of Basundhara Colony have taken the initiative of planting the trees in nearby localities.

ANNEXURE – VII SAMPLE OF PRESS RELEASE

Go Green Campaign: Little Steps Preschool Kids turn Crusaders for a Cleaner City

As reported by several leading international agencies working on environmental issues, it is revealed that 50% of world’s population resides in urban areas but they consume 75% of the total world’s energy. This has necessitated emphasizing the environmental awareness to every citizen where the environmental degradation has been a major issue.

To sensitize the urban mass in Patia area of Bhubaneswar city; the tiny tots of a pre-school in Nandan Vihar, Patia; Little Steps Preschool, had a weeklong cleanliness drive. The kids spread the message about cleanliness and greenery through an array of activities during 23-30 January, 2011 under the banner of “Go Green Campaign”.

The activities included cleanliness drive, awareness through a kids rally and a plantation drive. The little kids distributed leaflets appealing environmental conservation on a 10 point agenda and requested to make environmental promises which were recorded in a pledge form in a register. They were able to collect over 100 signatures from the residents of Nandan Vihar, Patia.

The campaign was initiated on 23rd January 2011 and was inauguruated by Hon’ble Mayor of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Shri Ananta Narayan Jena. The Corporator of Ward # 02, Shri Sanjay Sethi joined the inauguration programme. The inauguration was followed by recitation of Orissa State Anthem “Bande Utkal Janani” sung by noted singer Shri Tansen Singh.

Two leading environmental conservation organizations Centre for Environment and Development (CED), Trivandrum and Kalinga Development Foundation (KDF), Bhubaneswar were joint partners to this green campaign.

Also support was provided by TEXMO in providing saplings for plantation and Temple City Fabricators for the video coverage of the event.

The campaign originated from Nandan Vihar at Patia till Nadankannan area and covered Basundhara Colony, Bansi Vihar, Apartments like Subhadra Apartments, Jagannath Complex, Mansion Green, Orissa Sponge Colony, Star City, Baishanav Palace etc.The students also campaigned at Nandankanan on 26th January 2011 appealing visitors to save wild plants and animals. The Deputy Director Nandankannan, Mr. Kamal Lochan Purohit said, “It is a great initiative by the little ones and Nandankannan on similar lines has banned polythene in the Zoo”.

Page 45: Go Green_Closure Report 2011 Final

Little Steps Preschool, Nandan Vihar, Patia, Bhubaneswar -24 Page No 45

On 27th January 2011 more than 100 saplings were planted in and around Nandan Vihar area by the little kids. 28th January 2011 was the day when the pledges were executed by the residents of the Patia location.

The closing ceremony was at Big Bazaar, Patia where the school students dressed up as different animals and birds gathered on 30th January 2011 to wrap up the entire week long awareness drive.

Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Municipal Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation who was unable to make it due to last minute change of plans deputed the City Health Officer Mr. Ashok Kumar Panda to grace the occasion.

BMC

Shri Ananta Narayan Jena said “The campaign by the little ones is an inspiration for all the elders. For long we have been trying to make people aware on such issues without much success. The children have now taken up that responsibility”.

Little Steps:

A senior teacher of the school said “The civic authorities have the responsibility of keeping our surroundings but as responsible citizens we also have the duty to put the waste in the dustbins and ensure that the roads are not dirty. But since a large no of people do not care about these things the kids insisted to awaken them.

“We did not want to burn the waste and create more pollution so we took the help of BMC to transfer the garbage instead” said the Principal of the School, Ms Sudha Manjari Mishra.

Center for Environment and Development(CED)

“Environmental awareness factors should be inculcated in all school curriculums to make the kids understand about the seriousness of environmental issues from the beginning and act accordingly and Little Steps Go Green Campaign is the first step towards the same. This campaign also focuses on plantation to make the earth greener, saving water and protecting nature” said Dr Babu Ambat, Director, CED, Trivandrum.

Kalinga Development Foundation(KDF)

“Bhubaneswar city roughly generates waste to the tune of 579 grams/HH/day. It is expected that the campaign by the school kids would reduce solid waste generation through creation of sensibility to reduce the use and recycle wherever possible. There should be complete ban on polythenes in the city” Said Pravat C. Sutar, Chairman, Kalinga Development Foundation.

A BRIEF PROFILE

Little Steps was established on 29th June 2009. Little Steps Preschool was founded on the

principles and philosophy of Omm GyanVikash Trust, a non-profit TRUST that seeks to

promote education that bring together educationist in different media and disciplines and

from different cultural backgrounds to create exciting new works.

A dream project harnessed by alumnae of IIT, Mumbai; Amity Business School, Noida;

Loyola Institute of Business Administration, Chennai and Xavier Institute of Management,

Bhubaneswar; Little Steps’ team includes a family of scholars and practitioners who are

drawn from disciplines of management, education, sciences, cognitive & social psychology.

Little Steps Preschool was created by Sudha and Devasis who have over 12 years of

corporate experience in Multinational and Multicultural environment, within and

outside India. They have used the services of various preschools and day care centres for

their child Mahika. The centres met a good portion but were not wholesome in meeting

their needs. This triggered the creation of a comprehensive, high quality and

flexible child care and education service to meet a near 100% of parents’ needs.

Our Little Stepites are qualified, highly enthusiastic individuals who have opted out of

the demanding corporate world to groom their own children and have now volunteered to

spend their valuable time with your child. We ensure that your child gets a mother’s

unconditional love, care, affection, patience and they make your child feel at
