Take Back the Tap CampaignTake Back the Tap is a student-run campaign focused on increasing consumer awareness of the consequences associated with disposable bottled water and changing the habits.
UGA's Take Back the Tap is a subsidiary of UGA's Go Green Alliance. We encourage the use of reusable containers in lieu of disposable water bottles. Some people cite taste and safety concerns as their reasons for preferring plastic water bottles over tap water.
However, many consumers would be surprised to learn that 40% of all bottled water is filtered tap water (Food and Water Watch), thus negating this concern, along with the fact that the FDA regulates tap water but NOT plastic water bottle companies.
Many people purchase plastic water bottles with the intent to recycle them: IN FACT, ONLY ONE OUT OF FIVE WATER BOTTLES CAN BE RECYCLED due to
contamination and other concerns, resulting in over 765,000 tons of plastic water bottles ending up in landfills per year. Economic alternatives to commercial water bottles: Canteens filled with either tap, distilled or filtered water.
o http://www.facebook.com/pages/UGA-Take-Back-the-Tap/183163935057233 o Long term Goal: 1,000 signatures on petition to present to SGA and Administration
to remove water bottles from vending machines on campus and substitute use of water bottles with pitchers of water at SGA events (expected date: Late Fall 2011 or Spring Semester 2012)

Students were given a free Nalgene water bottle thanks to Brita's Filter for Good campaign after they took a blind taste test of filtered and tap water then voted on which one they liked the taste of better.
