TR AVEL INFOFor a day excursion to Aurland, Flåm or Gudvangen you can take a bus from many places along the Sognefjord. Some excursions can be made in combination with the early morning boat, Flåmsekspressen from Balestrand and Leikanger, and also in combination with the express boat from Lavik, Nordeide, Vik, Balestrand and Leikanger. Tickets on the boat must be book-ed in advance. There is a bus up to Stegastein viewpoint from Flåm and Aurland. You can take an excursion on the UNESCO Nærøyfjord from Flåm to Gudvangen and return. It is also worth taking an excursi-on to visit Undredal.

HIKING TIPAurlandsdalen is one of the most magnificent hiking paths in this region. Several days tour starting from Finse, or just the famous section Østerbø til Vassbygdi in a day tour, enchants visitors and locals. From June to mid September a daily hiking bus runs up the valley. With stops in Gudvangen, Flåm and Aurland, Østerbø Fjellstove, starting point of the 7 hour day tour, was never easier to reach. See separate bus schedule. Between Flåm and Aurland there is a 5,5 hour roundtrip hike to Hodvungo. The path is easy to reach from Flåm station, walking along the cycle path in the direction of Aurland until itends. Cross the main road and keep on walking on the path. A wonderful view awaits you. Hiking in Gudvangen is spectacular! Rimstigen leads hikers to breathtaking views over the Nærøyfjord, one of the Norwegian fjords part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. Walk from Gudvangen through Bakka along the west shore of the fjord. Five-hundred meters north of the Church of Bakka the steep path to Rimstigen begins. (Recommended for experienced hikers. Available just in summer time). A walk to the summer farm of Hovdungo in Undredal is fantastic! Be prepared for a demanding path which starts close to the church. You will be rewarded along the way with stunning views. The hike takes approximately 3,5 hours round trip.

HIKING TIP You can take the hikers bus to Hjelle/Utladalen valley and Turtagrø mountain to discover summer farms, waterfalls and mountain peaks. In Utladalen you find Norway`s highest free-flowing waterfall Vettisfossen. From Hjelle you can do the Four Waterfall Walk, a 5 hour walk. Please see separate schedule for buses.

The bus that goes up to Nigards glacier is also called the glacier bus and it ends up by the glacier centre. HIKING TIPOne of the classic Norwegian hikes is the hike to Fannaråken (2068 m) 15 km total, approx 6 hours walk .

You can get off the bus at Turtagrø hotel by the parking place. Follow the main road from Turtagrø as far as the second bend and then walk on a road up the Helgedalen valley. High up the Helgedalen valley you pass the intake to a tunnel feeding water to the Fortun hydro-electric power station. From here a good path twists and turns up to Fannaråken. You get a panoramic view over the West Jotunheimen range. Also the sunrise in good weather. Another popular walk is to start from Sognefjellshytta. Get off the bus here. Either do day hikes from Sognefjellshytta or do a hike to Skogadalsbøen and stay overnight at Skogadalsbøen DNT cabin (Mountain Trekking Association) 9–12 km. 5–7 hours. Start from Sognefjellshytta heading in among the peaks, then continue down to the well known Skogadalsbøen and rest here. Day 2 you can hike to Mt. Friken, offering views to the Hurrungane peaks. Then continue down to the summer pasture farms at Vettismorki, passing impressive waterfalls and on down to Utladalen valley. This tour can be started at both ends, but takes longer starting from Hjelle in Utladalen.

A bus tour along the Lustrafjorden provides a great experien-ce into a green fjord landscape. Several villages lie like pearls along the fjord: Marifjøra, Solvorn, Nes, Luster, Gaupne and Skjolden.

HIKING TIP There is a long and steep hike to Molden from Marifjøra in Luster, popular for its panaromic view all over Luster. Starting point also from Mollandsmarki at Krossen (8 km, 2 hours one way).

HIKING TIP Luster has a number of hiking trails in all directions. There is an exciting outdoor day trip to Fuglesteg from Fortun, the next village after Skjolden (approx. 1,5 hours up) Hiking map at the tourist information at Skjolden and Gaupne.

TR AVEL INFOFor a day excursion to Solvorn and Ornes take the bus from Sogndal bus terminal.There are connecting buses from other places along the Sognefjord. Solvorn is a small idyllic village. From Solvorn village centre there is a ferry across to Ornes daily. Walking along a road up the hillside at Ornes leads you to the Urnes Stave church and Urnes deer farm, cafè and farm shop. After your visit to Ornes take the ferry back to Solvorn

HIKING TIP Solvorn has an interesting cultural trail starting from the village centre, where you can learn about Solvorn`s history. (2,8 km, approx 1 hour walk). A longer walk can be done between Sogndal and Solvorn. The tour can be combined with a hike to Solvorn-nipa at 1031 m (12 km, 6 hours walk).

TR AVEL INFOFor a day excursion to Sogndal you can take a bus from many places along the Sognefjord. Sogndal is the travel communication hub for buses. It is the main shopping centre in Sognefjord. Sogndal municipality also includes Kaupanger and Fjærland. You can easily visit the Sogn Folkemuseum at Kaupanger by bus, see separate schedule. Also you can take a day excursion on the UNESCO Nærøyfjord with a ferry from Kaupanger to Gudvangen and return, see separate schedule.

HIKING TIP There are various opportunities for walks and hikes around Sogndal and the Sogndal valley. Hiking map at the tourist office in Sogndal. An easy walk from Sogndal centre is to walk to the Stedje Church up on the hill from the Stedje road, on the main road to Leikanger (5 km, 3 hours walk).

TR AVEL INFOFor a day excursion to Fjærland take the bus from Sogndal bus terminal. There are connecting buses from other places along the Sognefjord. Another scenic excursion is to take the boat from Balestrand up the Fjærlandsfjord to the glacier village. The boat enters the little village of Mundal and con-nects with a bus to the glaci-er museum and then further up to the glacier. The bus goes back to the boat in the afternoon, with a return to Balestrand.

HIKING TIP There are a number of paths and trails to summer farms in Fjærland. Also a guided glacier hike can be made to the Flatbrèen glacier, 1000 m above sea level, with a wonderful view. Great walk up to the cabin, (approx 2-3 hours walk). The Flatbrehytta cabin is a starting point for glacier walks on the Flatbreen, Jostedalsbreen. Booking in advance to www.brekick.no. HIKING TIPA popular walk in Leikanger is the hike to Bjørgahaug, a typical Norwegian stroll. Start at Øvre Njøs close to Sognefjord Hotel. This is the steepest, but shortest start, or start at Sanden 1 km east of Sognefjord hotel. Approx. 70 min walk. Panoramic view og Hermansverk and Leikanger. Between the hotels at Leikanger, there is an interesting trail showing the different cultural sights at Leikanger.

HIKING TIPFrom the centre of Balestrand village, hike up to the mountain Raudmelen or walk the easy Kreklingen nature trail. A heritage trail starts by the Norwegian Museum of Travel and continues along the shoreside of Balestrand village. An alternative is to get off the bus at Dragsvik and do the hike to the mountain Tjuatoten, Klibberg nature trail or walk the path at Lunde arboretum close by, in combination with a visit to the Enamel Workshop. HIKING TIPGuided round trip Sylvringen, the silver ring, around central parts of Vik, or do an easy hike around Hovsåsen, starting by the river Hopra. A 9 km long walk of 2 – 3 hours. HIKING TIP Høyanger has many hiking trails to offer, such as Bergefjellet mountain (6 km, 2 hours walk) off from the mountain road, a short drive from Høyanger, eg by taxi. Fuglefjellet ( 5 km, 3 hours walk) is near Lavik.

TR AVEL INFOFor a day excursion to Høyanger take the bus from Sogndal bus terminal.There are connecting buses from other places along the Sognefjord. An alternative from Vik is to take the boat, Tansøy, from Vik along the south side of Sognefjord to Ortnevik and combine it with a bus ride back via Balestrand / Dragsvik and Vangsnes. From Flåm and Aurland an alternative is to take the early morning boat, Flåmsekspressen to Balestrand in combination with a bus.
