MEMPHIS MEMBERS - NEWS AND NOTES

First, we welcome new members Mr. and Mrs. Walter HOffman, 191 Lemaster;Mrs. Mabel Hughes, Arlington; and an especially cordial welcome to Mrs. Wm.W. Deupree, 176 Buena Vista who is returning to us, having been a memberwhen the group was organized a few years ago. Among other genealogicalproblems that Mary Evelyn seeks to solve, is the whereabouts 'of some NorthMississippi ancestors.

A goodly crowd enjoyed the Study session held at the home of Mrs. I. G. Duncanat 35 Belleair Drive on the evening of August 15th. Meeting for study andexchange of ideES at night is new for us. We believe the members like the ideaand we will try it again. Mrs. Duncan's extensive genealogical library wasan attraction. Wilena Bejach (Mrs. L. D.) displayed her collection of recentlymounted genealogical maps.

Mrs. Frank Liddell, 4249 Tuckahoe Road, provided her lovely home for our 10to 4 session on September 19th. At that time, plans were formulated for ourforthcoming October meeting. Mrs. Charles Embry will be with us, thanks tothe efforts qf Program ,Chairman Betty Goff Cartwright (Mrs. J. B.) and Friendand Advisor, Lillian Gardiner (Mrs. L.B.). Mrs. Embry, well known to all whosearch for records of forefathers in Tennessee, will talk to us about books, manuscripts, and other sources of genealogical information to be found in theState Library in Nashville.' She may also ,tell us the results of a personalsurvey of records in certain Tennessee county court houses, obtained while ona recent trip. We are sure no one will want to miss this. Members will benotified by post card, but write on your calendars: Mrs. Charles Embry speaksat home of Mrs. James B. Cartwright, 4533 Park Ave., October 29th from 2 to 4.It is a priVilege to have Mrs. Embry come to Memphis to speak to us. Tea willbe served following the program.

~le were sorry to lose Sally (Mrs. Frank) Basler who has returned to her homein St. Petersburg Beach, Florida. We wish her continued success in her pursuit of the elusive name and/or date.

REMINDER: The microfilm reader, property of the Society, 'is at the home ofthe President, and may be borrowed by members who have microfilm records tosearch.

VTe are always happy to hear from our tlsibling societies tl • Your President wasprivileged to reply at length to a letter from Mr. Jolm Plath Green of Dallas,Texas who sought information on the methods, means, and other details, of oper-.ating a genealogical society such as ours. It is indeed flattering to beadmired and emulated, perhaps. We hope we were helpful.

Now, may we all be inspired to WRITE THAT LETTER.

Wilena Roberts Bejach (Mrs. L. Dilliard)

Autumn is at hand and time for all of us to assemble the notes made this summerand prepare for further study and analysis when winter keeps us close by thefire. Time out for reflective thinking is a must with the lIknottier" problemsof genealogy and a well kept set of notes often provides an unexpected answer.Remember, too, in writing your family history that anyone can compile vital statistics. It is the person who garners every morsel of information and carefullyreconstructs each generation with well documented material who produces the histories we enjoy reading the most.

Your Editor and Director of Research could not resist the "call of the openroad" so we spent one week searching in our sister State, Kentucky. We were introduced to Mr. Willard K. Jillson, author of "The Kentucky Land Grant Index"and "Old Kentucky Entries, Deeds, and Wills", while working in the Archives inFrankfort. We also met one of our members, Mrs. Clark Boyd, who very graciouslyspent one day helping us with our work.

While copying records in the courthouse in Clark County, we introduced ourselvesto two other searchers. It was a pleasant surprise to find one was Mrs. W. B.Walker, an out-of-town member,;and her companion was Miss Virginia Wilson. BothMrs. Walker and Miss Wilson spent many hours on the new DAR publication (seethe notice on inside back cover), "Kentucky Cemetery Records ll

, Vol. 1.

We both found Kentucky a friendly State in which to work and are planning a return visit~

Your Editor' was sorry to be away from the telephone when Mr. Tracy D. Cary of.Pampa, Texas called. Mr. Cary is President of the Pampa Genealogical and Historical Society and Editor of their new publication "Coronado Heritage". Mr.Cary left a copy of the first edition at our library and we welcome them to ourgrowing list of exchanges.

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. A. Burns of Phoenix, Arizona did get an answer when they calledrecently and we spent several hours discussing the various phases of this work.Mr. Burns has worked hard in behalf of "Ansearchin' News". His articles haveadded much to our quarterly and we wish other members would try a hand at writing.

In February of this year we received a letter from an out-of-town member, Mrs.Lewis O. Bowman, Sr. of Rockville, Maryland. Mrs. Bowman was complimenting us onour publication and in conclusion she said, "Is anyone contemplating an index to"Ansearchin' News" that you know of? I might undertake such a deal, if youcould plan the publication. You see I am a Medical Librarian, and to us a bookwithout an index is absolutely useless unless • . • • therefore I am indexconscious." So, you may thank Mrs. Bowman for the generous offer and many hoursspent that we might have an index this year. Because of the time element, Mrs.Bowman indexed the first three issues and members of our local group indexedthe October number so you could have the complete publication this year. Mrs.Bowman and the members of the Memphis group deserve a big hand for such an undertaking. (See inside back cover for notice of Mrs. Bowman's new publication.)

Compensation for this type of publication comes in so many nice ways -- theunsolicited manuscripts, the offer to index our work, the many letters and cardsof congratulations, the just-passing-thrpugh-thought-I-would-call telephone messages, the wonderful cooperation of the State Archives in working with our Director

of Research, the hours of volunteer help in assembling and ~~iling details, etc.It has all added up to a pleasant year and a desire to try "bigger and better'things for 1961!

FIRST SETTLERS OF SHELBY COUNTY. TENNESSEE

Copied by: Mr. William A. Burns, 2721 W. San Miguel, Phoenix, Arizona

"About .278 years after the first white man, Fernando De Soto, camped on groundwhere now stands the city of Memphis, the first white settlers moved in underthe leadership of Andrew Jackson and founded a permanent settlement. The yearwas 1819. That same year a county was formed and given the name of Shelby. Oneyear later a Federal Census was taken, and it is indeed surprising that therewere so few.

Federal tabulation for the year 1820 for the County of Shelby shows a total of364 residents, broken down as follows: Male whites, 141; White females, 110;Male slaves, 55; Female slaves, 58. The ages of the white settlers were listedas follows: Males-up to 10; to 16; to 18; 18 to 26; to 45; and over 45. Femaleswere listed as follows: to 10; to 16; to 26; to 45; and over 45 years of age. From a microfilm of these census records I have compiled the following names andage groups:

As I bring this compilation to a close and my eyes glance again over the completed list, my mind quickly reverts back to the time that these fifty familyheads and their families moved into what is now Shelby County, Tennessee tocarve out a home. It makes me wonder just how many, because of privations, sickness, and other reasons, gave up and went back to their former homes, andwho of the number stayed it out to become the nucleus of the largest populatedcounty in the State of Tennessee, and who, in an ever venturous spirit, pushedinto Arkansas, Texas, Indian Territory, and on westward.

One invariably wonders about the descendants of these early settlers of ShelbyCounty, and if anyone reads this article who is descended from one of the "familyheads", I am sure that the readers of this publication would enjoy a short article telling about their connections".

HELPS IN HUNTING NORTH CAROLINA ANCESTORSBy: Mrs. Thomas P. Hughes, Jr.

Octob""r 1060

In this condensed version of my talk before the MGS, may I repeat that "haphazard research gives haphazard results". Anyone, whether amateur or expert, shouldprepare before visiting State records, as complete a family chart as possible .in the line, or several lines, to be researched. Three chart. samples exhibitedat your meeting were: the D.A.R. chart with blanks for 6 generations; a husbandand-wife-and children chart with blanks for 15 children (Everton PubIs.); and asimilar but larger chart which I copyrighted in 1951 while a member of the Mississippi Genealogical Society. Other "at home" steps before leaving on a trip, would be exhaustive study, in your home-town library, of the~ to be researched, with emphasis on available Census microfilms, printed county or family histories, and printed county and state records. As a "must" for basic North Carolina research, I consider the following to be outstnading, many of which may beseen currently at Memphis Cossitt Library:

In my home library I have above publications except Nos. 7, 8, 13 and 14. Mostpublic libraries have all of them. Advance study before leaving home saves precious time (and expense!) after arrival in Raleigh.

Mrs. L.D. Bejach, Mrs. Frank Basler, and I found confortable and reasonable lodging at Wilmington Tourist Home, 118 N. Wilmington, within 2 blocks walking distance of Archives (two persons in air-conditioned bedroom and private bath, cost$2.50 each per day); no charge for auto parking in rear. We took most of ourmeals at a small drugstore one block north of Archives building. A good snackstand is also in the basement at Archives.

Through kindness of Mr. D. L. Corbitt, a supply of pamphlets (No. 1 above) wasdistributed to your meeting. Also for the asking is the pamphlet "Books, Pamphlets, and the N.C. Historical Review" listing available publications, descriptionsand prices. We purchased many of those listed including: vol. 8 of "Records ofMoravians in N.C." $3.00; vo~s.' 1 and 2, "John Gray Blount Papers" 3.00 ea.;"Explorations, Descriptions and Attempted Settlements of Carolina 1584-1590" l.00;"Ye County of Albemarle in Carolina" 1.50; "N.C. in the American Revolution" 50c.

In showing my family chart, with its explicit surnames to be sought, to the SearchRoom librarian Mrs. Mary Rogers (always helpful and gracious), I learned one particular ancestor had lived in a "burned county" (i.e., a county whose courthouse

Page 10: gnsrarchin' Jlrros - Wild Apricot...at home of Mrs. James B. Cartwright, 4533 Park Ave., October 29th from 2 to 4. It is a priVilege to have Mrs. Embry come to Memphis to speak to

records were destroyed by fire or warfare). This stumbling-block was lessened, however, by finding at Archives the following:

(1) preserved LEGISLATIVE PAPERS (unindexed, uncatalogued, unmicrofilmed);(2) personal COLLECTIONS donated through the years to Archives, such as:

Lovi tt Hines Collection, Charles R. Holloman Collection, etc.;(3) COUNTY HISTORIES such as "The Story of Kinston and Lenoir County" by

Johnson & Holloman, and "Sketches of Pitt CountY-VI by Henry T. King;(4) TOMBSTONE RECORDS IN N.C., compiled by WPA ort cards filed in special

cabinets (not complete for entire state, but most helpful);(S) MILITARY RECORDS such as Revolutionary Army Accounts, Revolutionary

vouchers, and War of 1812 vouchers, indexed alphabetically;(6) HISTORICAL RECORDS OF NORTH CAROLINA, 3 vols., 1939 (NCDAH);(7) various and numerous records on shelf display in Search Room.

At the Land Grant Office, I found some deeds also recorded along with land grants, especially valuable when county records have been destroyed! To anyone havinginterest in the old Dobbs County area (later Craven, Pitt, Wayne, Jones, GlasgowGreene, Lenoir, Johnston), I highly recommend "The Story of Kinston & LenoirCounty". A few remaining copies of this 1954 printing are available from the coauthor, C. R. Holloman, 2307 Euston St.

Unable to spend any appreciable time at the State Library on that trip, I plan areturn visit to explore old newspaper issues preserved there, many of which contain legal notices involving lawsuits, removal from county, etc. Often suchnotices point to preserved State Supreme Court records, or Legislative Papers.Such helps, however, sometimes are better searched by local paid genealogistsfamiliar with those avenues; Archives will furnish a current list of such persons, but with fee contract to be completed between yourself and the professional. In the State Library search room, Mrs. Margaret Price is most capable and helpful.

I cannot stress too much the importance of county formation study, and countyboundary-line changes through the years. Often an ancestor may be found earlyin one county, and later in other counties formed therefrom; yet he never movedat all during those years! -- his home stayed in one place, but the county itselfwas chopped up to make other later counties. County charts I secured were: asmall convenient 9xl8 County Outline Map (Se) which I use for quick, continuousreference (I typed under each county name the year of its formation, and on reverse added the parent county or counties); photostats of the large 8-section1775 Mouzon map; a colored county map with clever figures representing the manynationalities and years and sections in which settled (2Si). Smaller-versionphotostat of the Mouzon map may be secured from Memphis Cossitt Library (MayCase 917.5, 1775, M29), Reference Department.

The State Archives, Library, and Land Grant buildings not being open on Saturdaysand Sundays, you may spend intervening week-ends at some nearby county courthouse(if open); or Greensboro Public Library; or at University of N.C. Library's Collection Room, Chapel Hill (if open). Hours and days open are subject to change,so you should contact in advance.

Raleigh points of interest were the public rose gardens in full bloom, each bushtagged, a riot of beauty and color; and the restored birthplace of Andrew Johnson,17th U.S. President. We had no time to visit others. Raleigh is such a friendlyand interesting city, as well as the entire Smte, that we hated to leave andwant to go back as soon as possible! Its scenery is magnificent; its climatepleasant especially in spring or fall; its program outstanding on preserving oldrecords. And be sure to save time to visit Raleigh's "Hall of History" in Archives building, and Mr. Corbitt's publications department with its many volumesfor sale at unusually reasonable prices.

GENERAL RUTHERFORD'S EXPEDITION AGAINST THE CHEROKEES

Procured and prepared by President Wilena Roberts Bejach (Mrs. Lois Dillard) fromthe original Account Book at the North Carolina State Archives, Raleigh.

In July 1776, Griffith Rutherford, Brig. Gen. of the Salisbury District, N.C.,was ordered to assemble three hundred men from the Surry County, N.C. MilitiaRegiment and to march to a rendezvous with like groups of Virginians and SouthCarolinians, where and when all would proceed to quell the Cherokees who weredisgruntled because of advances by the white man on their lands, as well as having been incited to violence against the settlers by the English. The meetingplace with the Virginians under Col. William Christian was to be at Stalneckerson the Holston River. Under Rutherford were Lt. Col. Joseph Williams and MajorJoseph Winston. The Regiment dispersed the Cherokees at the Middle Towns beforeChristian arrived, but he left a force of one hundred men under Captains WilliamMoore and Joseph Hardin to harass the Indians.
