Dear Brother Aaberg,

As we move into 2016, it is a good time to think about the future. What will we do next? What will our

goals be? How can we achieve them? I’m sure that in some way, we are all considering these sorts of

questions. At the organizational level, Acacia at Mizzou is no different.

With this in mind, we would like to call our alumni to action. Now, ten years into the rechartering of

our chapter, we have the capacity to form and create our own alumni association. Nearly every

chapter that enjoys stability and success does so for one main reason: Alumni Support. Behind each

successful chapter there is, usually, a dedicated group of Alumni, who seek to help the undergraduates

have a safe, meaningful, and fun experience.

It is our belief that we now have the type of alumni, and number required, to create a strong support

system for our undergraduate brothers. We can do so in one simple way, by making an annual

contribution of $60 to the Missouri Chapter Alumni Association. For the price of a night out at a

restaurant and movie, we can create that safe, meaningful, and fun experience for not only our

undergraduates, but also ourselves.

Such a contribution can even be structured in payment plans, or lump sums. We have the power to

create and form the association as we see fit. We can allocate dues to save up for a new chapter house

down the line. We can use some of it to finance a celebration of the 110th Anniversary of our founding

in the Spring of May 2017 and/or Homecoming 2016. We can even delegate some of these funds

towards creating a recruitment scholarship, a new members scholarship, or even an undergraduate

scholarship. But, the Association will need volunteers to run it, and hold votes on such issues. This

will be a decision made by every dues-paying member, as we begin moving forward, with the hopes of

holding our first informal conference call sometime between the end of Spring Break and beginning of

Summer Vacation.

There will be many other volunteer opportunities that will come from this effort and, right now, the

best way we can support the undergraduate Chapter is to become a fiscally sound and responsible

Alumni association. It is our duty to better our Fraternity’s record, and it is only as alumni, with both

the foresight and ability to have continuity in operations that we can truly keep moving our chapter of

Acacia towards an even more respected position on campus, and in the International community.

So please, if you are interested, contact one of us below, and we can offer more details and answer any

questions one might have.

Looking Forward: A Message from the Venerable Dean

Brethren, during my time as Venerable Dean I hope to grow Acacia at

Mizzou not only in numbers, but academically, in brotherhood, and in

service. We have achieved great things in the past couple semesters and

looking forward we will achieve many more. One of these great things that

we will achieve in the near future will be establishing an active alumni

base that will serve as the foundation for our chapter to grow from.

The next thing we will accomplish looking forward will be improving our

academic standing. We will hold our members to a higher standard and

improve our chapters overall GPA to above a 3.1 and maintain that. Not

only will our chapter achieve academically but with our service to the

community. Our chapter has the goal of reaching 300 service hours for this semester. This will almost

double our previous semesters total service hours and put us in the top tier for service hours oncampus.

These next couple semesters are all about growth for us as a chapter. Growth of our chapter size, growth in our active alumni base, growth in our academics, and most importantly growth in ourservice to the community. We, the brothers of Acacia, look forward to growing as a chapter and asalways, continue to give light to those with whom we may be associated.

State of the Chapter

I would like to offer my brief congratulations to the chapter for the general upward trend in theiroperations. I think I speak for all Alumni when I say I am continually grateful that our members focuson doing the right thing, and bringing credit to our Fraternity’s name. Many Greek Chapters seem toestablish a presence on a probationary list, or worse, having no presence at all due to expulsion fromcampus. That we have no behavioral infractions, and have maintained a respectable name on campusis something to celebrate.

Beyond their survival, the chapter has continued to grow. The chapter has grown to approximately40 members, and has steadied themselves academically turning in a 3.12 GPA in the Spring of 2014(Fall grades not available at time of writing).  Additionally, they have made strides buildingconnections within the Greek community, have successfully implemented Chapter builder forrecruitment, and continue to put service at the forefront of their operations. It is my belief that asteady approach with similar operations will yield a 70 man chapter with approximately a 3.00 GPAand consistent strong operations.

A Year in Review

The Missouri Chapter of Acacia has made greatstrides in the past year towards bettering themselves.Along with this, the chapter’s number of activemembers has gradually increased towards fifty overthe past three semesters. During all of this, theUniversity of Missouri has had big changes andevents occurring throughout it all.  Whether it was

Mizzou Greek Life or rallies for movementsthroughout campus, it did not distract the brothersfrom accomplishing the goals set forth for them. Theactive chapter voted on a new Academic Policy tohelp improve the fraternity’s overall GPA. They sawgreat success as the overall GPA rose approximatelythree-tenths to 3.129. While eclipsing the All-University average, this also placed the chapter in thetop 33% of the fraternities at the University ofMissouri. This allowed the brothers to receive anAcademic Achievement banner from the Universityto be displayed on the exterior of the chapter house.

Of course, academic excellence was not their only goal over the past year; the brothers put forth asmuch effort as possible towards human service every week. Some brothers would attend parkcleanups throughout Columbia, and some would regularly volunteer at the local food bank. In fact, they occasionally partnered with a service sorority on campus to volunteer at the food bank together. All of this effort prepared the brothers for the chapter’s most important event of the year, AcaciaClaus. Brothers found time in their schedule to come out to Speaker’s Circle on the University ofMissouri’s Campus and help raise money for the children at Shriner’s Hospital in St. Louis. Somebrothers were even seen at the table every day of the week. Seeing everyone work together gave a truefeeling of camaraderie to everyone in attendance.

One of the best surprises that occurred was meeting an Alumnus from the chapter located in Rolla,Missouri. He spoke of his memories of Conclave, his time as an active brother, and his hopes that hischapter would recolonize some day in the near future. One of the active chapter’s goals over the pastyear was to increase the feeling of brotherhood so one could always feel the instant connection whenmeeting with another Acacian like some brothers had the chance to that day. Outside of plannedevents like these, brothers would sometimes go to the Mizzou Rec Center on campus to playbasketball or swim, and sometimes they all went out bowling on a free night. All of these events thathave occurred not only gave the brothers the opportunity to enjoy their college career but to have atrue fraternal experience.

Sprig & Sword Formal 2015

The Sprig & Sword formal was a great success this past fall.  First there was a banquet dinner atStephens College, which allowed for awards to be given out and officer transitions to occur. "Withthese awards we're able to recognize members who have had achievements that have helped ourchapter advance as a whole even if not everyone noticed their work during the year." said ShaneBurns. “The officer transitions mark the beginning of the term for the newly elected executive board. It’s certainly an exciting time for the chapter as it renews its fire with new leadership.” Once the

banquet concluded, everyone in attendance moved to Tonic Lounge in downtown Columbia where

brothers and their dates were able to dance the night away.

An Acacian Pledgeship

Rushing Acacia was the best decision I have ever made. When I first arrived on campus, I did not

know a single guy at Mizzou. Going through the pledging process not only allowed me to get to know

my pledge brothers, but I also befriended a lot of the actives and even a few alumni. I quickly realized

that Acacians are not just good brothers; they are genuinely good people. Whether it is Brother Josh

Zimmerman inviting me to his house for Thanksgiving or Brother Noah Trobe inviting me to watch

Lions games at his apartment, I really feel proud to be a part of a fraternity where the guys truly care

about each other and enjoy spending time with one another.

During Pledge education, Senior Dean Adam Taylor did not just teach us the founding fathers and

Preamble, he taught us the lessons we needed to learn in order to be successful in life. For example, at

our Coats for Kids bake sale we learned about the need to plan in advance, to depend on each other,

and to communicate in order to motivate. He also taught us about balancing school, our fraternity,

and extracurricular activities, in that specific order of priority.

After initiation it felt like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. I knew that my status as an

Acacian had shifted from temporary to permanent, which instilled a lot of confidence in me knowing

that I can make a positive impact on the chapter going forward.

Tailgating with Acacia at Mizzou

In the past, Mizzou football tailgates for the Mem Chapter of Acacia have been at the house, but thisyear the chapter had their own tailgating spot in a parking lot at the corner of Hospital Drive andCollege Avenue. The home opener against SEMO was during the chapter’s Dad’s Weekend, and amajority of the brother’s dads were in attendance.

The tailgate had an abundance of delicious food and refreshing beverages, and all the brothers andtheir dads sat together once inside the stadium to enjoy the Mizzou Tigers victory over SEMO.  Duringthe Homecoming game against Florida, the first night game of the season, several alumni came back, ,including Dennis Magdato and Jackson Aaberg,  and were able to experience the new tailgate spotwhile swapping stories with some of the active brothers. "Meeting alumni is a great opportunity forthem to reminisce and for us actives to hear stories from when they were actives,” explains ShaneBurns, former Junior Dean and newly elected Venerable Dean of Missouri’s Acacia Chapter.  "Thiscan provide opportunities for us to see how far the chapter has come, and what traditions haveremained similar.”

On game days, one can always spot Brother Tyger Ligon setting up the tent at eight in the morning, nomatter how late in the afternoon or evening the game started, and one could always smell BrotherLogan Hughes slow roasting a marinated pork butt. Finally, one could always hear all the brothersenjoying each other’s company, and supporting the Tigers, who definitely needed it this year.

In Memorial of Anthony Olson

Many Alumni have shared their fond memories of Anthony Olson who, unfortunately, joined theChapter Eternal in Fall of 2015. Acacia Fraternity is an organization where contributions meldtogether, and it becomes difficult to give credit where it is due. We do not have that challenge withAnthony Olson.  Suffice to say, without his vision, determination, and contagious smile Acacia at theUniversity of Missouri’s re-chartering would not exist. For most of us, that would mean missing outon some of our most dear friends, groomsmen, and mentors. For all of us, that would mean missingout on our brotherhood’s continued existence.

In that light, we would do right to remember him as we continue to better our Fraternity’s record. Oneway to do that is to donate to the scholarship created in his name that, once endowed, will be used tocreate opportunities for more Fraternity men – much the same as Anthony Olson did with his visionto re-establish Acacia at Mizzou.
