THE men and women who don the blue and risk their lives are walking a very dif-ferent fi ne line.

The Swan Hill branch of the Blue Ribbon Founda-tion runs the risk of having to cancel its major fundrais-ing event for the year unless ticket sales for its ball don’t improve.

The Blue Ribbon Ball will celebrate its 10th anniversa-ry at Swan Hill Town Hall on Saturday, October 22.

Held every second year, this year’s ball will feature Mel-bourne band The Baker Boys.

Chairman of the Swan Hill branch, Leading Senior Con-stable Nik Probyn, said funds from the ball go towards the upkeep and purchase of new

equipment to maintain the Robert Lake Resuscitation Unit at Swan Hill District Health.

Detective Senior Consta-ble Lane was killed on July 13, 1979, after he want to a Kyalite address, 60km north of Swan Hill, to make enquir-ies about a stolen car.

“A lot of time and effort is put in by very few people to raise these funds and to put such an event together and it would be extremely disap-pointing if this time and ef-fort was for nothing,” Lead Sen-Constable Probyn said.

“If you were thinking of or planning on attending the event, please purchase your tickets as soon as possible so as not to miss out. The com-mittee will be meeting next Monday. Unless ticket sales

improve, a decision will be made then as to the viabil-ity of continuing with the event.”

“It really is a channel for the community to appreci-ate the work of Victoria Po-lice; between the foundation and the community, I guess we are the middle men and women,” he said.
