Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The 27th Annual Glover Park Day is happening on Saturday, June 4, 2016, begin-

ning at 11 a.m. There will be something for ev-

eryone, including tasty offerings from many of your favorite neighborhood and nearby restaurants; talented crafters selling their wares; great music from local bands and Stoddert Elementary School choruses; and raffle tickets for prizes donated by many of our awesome Glover Park and area businesses. And that’s not all: you can adopt a dog or cat, play on the moon bounce, let your dog try out the agility course, have your face painted, and catch up with old friends and meet new ones. For all the details, see the list of activities on page 4.

Putting It All TogetherBy tradition, Glover Park Day is scheduled for the first Saturday in June and focuses on our community and the three thousand or so residents that make up “The Heart of the 51st State!” The venue is DPR’s Guy Mason Recreation Center on the southeast corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Calvert Street.

Ever wonder what it takes to put on Glover Park Day? To answer that question, you need to ask what Cheri, Amanda, Barbara, Doris, Paula, Sheila, Ariadne, Melissa, Karen, Felix, and Joe do. Like a “League of Their Own,” they make it happen. Glover Park Day rumblings begin in February. Once the first organizational meeting takes place, the real work begins: planning and execution.

First, permits must be obtained from the DC government (Thank you Milt Grossman!). Then tables and chairs must be rented; t-shirts designed and ordered; businesses contacted and asked to participate and donate prizes for the raffle; advertising materials designed, printed, and posted in local businesses; notices sent to DC listservs, local blogs, and websites and posted on social media; service organizations invited; bands and other entertainment scheduled; crafters recruited; sound systems and a stage rented; volunteers organized to help with set-up, teardown, and event activities; No Parking signs secured from DC government (ugh!); a first-aid person designated; supplies purchased (tape, poster board, staples, string, raffle tickets, markers, envelopes); and a site plan developed.

That brings us to the precipice of the event. Beginning Friday evening

before the event and resuming at 6 a.m. on the day of the event, post-ers are made; a zillion balloons inflated and distributed throughout the grounds; masses of tables and chairs delivered; the venue staged; restaurants, crafters, businesses, and service organizations set up in their spaces; and the “nerve center” organized (otherwise known as the “GPCA table”) where t-shirts and raffle tickets are sold and any and all problems solved. I’m sure I missed something, but you get the idea.

Join us at Glover Park Day 27, sponsored by the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation and the Glover Park Citizens Association.
