I hope all our families had a wonderful and safe Easter. We have quite a number of families attending the Commonwealth Games and taking leave. What a wonderful experience! I hope the games are enjoyable and the students can return with many great memories to share with their classes. CYBERSAFETY AND YOUR CHILDREN Last week’s newsletter started with 1 0 things you should know about cyberspace – I would like to share the next six with you in this newsletter. The first four are below in point form. Please see last week’s newsletter for the details of the first four. 1. Respect and Responsibility 2. Cyberspace is a public place 3. Nothing can be totally deleted – your content is permanently online 4. You always leave a digital footprint

5. Manners maketh the man … or woman Manners are important. They are important in the real world and they are equally important online; it is known as netiquette. So what are the basics you need to teach your children?

• Words do not convey facial expressions or emotion, so be aware of your tone. • Even when using Emoticons, things can easily be taken the wrong way. • Caps lock equals shouting • If you wouldn’t swear in front of your Nanna, probably not to swear online • Do not send a text or email when you are overtired, angry, emotional or upset. Pause, reflect, sleep on it

and then send. • Treat others, as you would like to be treated. Remember, once sent it is out of your control. • What you would not say to a person’s face, then it probably should not be online.

6. You are never anonymous online You are never anonymous. You cannot hide behind fake or blocked accounts. Police worldwide have the ability to obtain and serve warrants on websites, Telcos, ISP’s and force them to hand over the identity information required to investigate.

7. Passwords must never be shared Please teach your children not to share passwords. It is fine for you to know your child’s password (you should and you should check their accounts) but, children assume they can trust everyone and sometimes friends can assume your child’s identity or use information to bully your child, as they have their password.

8. There is no such thing as a safe website or app Many sites especially those aimed at children promote themselves as being safe. This often lulls parents/carers into a false sense of security, believing that the site or app has an inbuilt safety setting to protect their children. While some sites are safer than others, when it comes to safety, all sites rely on two things: • The security setting being used • The honesty and intention of the user.

There are plenty of people in the world happy to prey on the vulnerable to satisfy their perverted desires. Even other children know that they can set up accounts quickly and easily and use these to cyberbully others. Allow your children to use sites that you approve of. Play the game, look at the site and be aware of what your children are accessing. There is no such thing as a safe website, just a safe user and a vigilant parent/carer.

9. Anyone can be anyone online It really is as simple as who you want to be. Visit a site, fill in the gaps truthfully or otherwise and away you go. Despite what sites tell you, there is no way to verify the details of the account holder and plenty of people lie online for a variety of reasons. Teach your children that just as some people lie in the real world, some people lie online and there is no way of really knowing if a person is who they say they are. If an older person approached your child at the shops and said that they are 14, it is obvious the person is lying. Online, it is much easier to hide behind a screen and pretend. Predators will go to extraordinary lengths to make contact with children. They will use voice-changing software and the webcam might show a very different person. Please be careful.

10.There are laws in cyberspace If it’s a crime in the real world, it’s probably a crime online too. There are specific laws that are applicable to cyberspace and technology misuse, and often police do not have to prove intent. Please ensure your children know that it can be a criminal offence to misuse technology or to bully or harass someone online. Please note: Sites and apps have age restrictions. Children in primary school should not have access to most sites and should not have accounts. Here is a list of some of the age restrictions. You are placing your child at risk by allowing them online or providing them with accounts. Our school should not have to deal with online bullying or activity, as the age restrictions for students should be followed and enforced by parents/carers. FACEBOOK – 13years + ASK.FM and QOOHME – 13 years + SKYPE – All ages FACETIME – 13 years + INSTAGRAM – 13 years + TINDER – 13 years + KIK – 13 years + but rated 17 years + SNAPCHAT – 13 years + TWITTER – 13 years + You TUBE – 13 years + to have an account TUMBLR – 13 years +

Anzac Day Our school has been invited by the Gloucester RSL Sub-Branch to be part of our town march and service on Wednesday 25 April this year, during the second week

of the school holidays. In past years, we have always had a great turnout of students who have participated in the march, in remembrance of the sacrifice our service men and women have made throughout the years. Students should meet at the Gloucester Soldiers Club at about 10.15am in readiness for the 10.30am march. They should wear full GPS school uniform. Don’t forget to polish those shoes! We will finish at the Memorial Park (clock tower opposite school) at the end of the town service. We hope to see you there. Rod Maggs Assistant Principal – Stage 3

Stage 3 Art Excursion

We all had a fantastic day down at the park last Thursday creating, exploring and being immersed in our local environment. Following our brief look at land artist Andy Goldworthy’s work, we headed off inspired to create some of our own. Andy uses shape, texture, colour and tone effects to create unique artworks that use materials found in the environment in which he is works. We made the use of sticks, rocks, grass, leaves and other found objects to create our own small group works in the light of what we had learned from this special artist. The students had a ball coming up with their own creative pieces. Some of them might still be found down in the park if you want to have a look! Local artist and photographer, Wendy Fraser, also kindly gave up some of her time to come and work amongst the groups, giving them some ideas and guidance. Thank you, Mrs Fraser! Check out some photos from the afternoon… Rod Maggs, Assistant Principal (Stage 3)
