Care Achievement Respect Effort Responsibilty

PRINCIPAL’S REPORTHope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing Easter. These last two weeks of term are very busy.

We wish Year 12 students well for their Half Yearly Examinations. Year 10 students are currently on work experience until the end of term. Thank you to Mr De Angelis for the huge amount of work involved in contacting prospective placements, collecting and collating the paperwork from students and work places and then the follow up when students are at the work site. This is a very valuable component of our curriculum as it provides students with an insight to prospective employment opportunities and/or courses they may like to study at university or TAFE.

One lunchtime while wandering the playground, I heard singing in the music room. On investigation, I was entertained by students practicing for the school choir. It was heartening to see students enjoying themselves in a classroom at lunchtime, working as a team. Thanks to Mrs Ingram for providing the students with this extracurricular activity. This is one of many additional activities provided for students at lunchtime.

A number of Year 10 students have been trained in the Student Teacher Understanding Network (STUN) program. Students are trained to participate with a partner in lesson observations of a teacher, and then engage in constructive feedback with that teacher on various aspects of the lesson that had been pre-negotiated beforehand. This is a very powerful program for both students and teachers. Students are empowered with a voice for teacher improvement and teachers get to have lessons observed and commented upon by their ‘clients’ to improve teaching practice. This links to a teacher’s annual review program – Professional Development and Performance Program where it is expected that teachers have at least two lessons observed by an immediate supervisor, colleague or student.

Last week we held our mandatory evacuation practice. The students handled the evacuation in a very calm and sensible manner. All students and staff were evacuated and accounted for in a timely manner. Congratulations to all.

Schools are very busy places and teachers have timetabled classes that they are expected to be teaching or they have prearranged meetings they are expected to attend. I am

NAPLAN EQUATING TESTSelected students in Years 7 and 9 will complete the Naplan Equating Test (paper test) during week 2 of Term 2 (7-11 May). The Naplan Equating Test is used as a guide to the effectiveness of the actual NAPLAN testing conducted in week 3 of Term 2. 28 students in Year 7 and 20 students in Year 9 will sit the Language Conventions test.

Students were selected at random by ACER, the body conducting the test. The school had no control over who was selected and staff did not see the content of the test. These measures were taken to ensure the accuracy of the testing process.Students who sit the Equating test will not receive any results.

NAPLAN TESTThe annual NAPLAN testing will take place in week 3 of Term 2 (15-17 May). Our school will be doing a paper test, not an online test. Students from Year 7 and Year 9 will complete the NAPLAN testing in Literacy and Numeracy. Results will be sent to parents later in the year. These results will be used to assist staff in improving student literacy and numeracy in all subject areas at Gloucester High School.

For more information on NAPLAN the link is https://www.nap.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-document-library/

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT continued.....appealing to parents that if they would like to speak with a teacher, could they please contact the teacher and make an appointment. Also, if contact has been made with the front office to make an appointment with the teacher and if the teacher is on class, the office staff will send an email to that teacher. It may take the teacher until the end of the day to respond.

Best wishes to the Duke of Edinburgh group who are having their first camp out next week. Fingers crossed for good weather.

This is the last newsletter for the term. On behalf of the staff at GHS, have a safe and enjoyable vacation. School resumes on Tuesday 1 May for our students.

Mrs Trudi Edman

EXPLORING EARLY CHILDHOOD EXCURSION 27 MARCHYear 11 students studying Exploring Early Childhood went on an excursion to Manning Base Hospital and the Manning Education Centre (MEC). This excursion was part of their study of the core topic 'Pregnancy and Childbirth' where the students have been focusing on the physical and emotional demands of the mother during and after childbirth.

Mrs Kerrie Wisely and other staff kindly took us on a tour of the Maternity Unit, Paediatric Ward and a session with the simulation machines at the MEC. Some of the highlights included getting to know the Midwife in the special care nursery who introduced us to 4 premature babies - and 1 set of twins, meeting the Play Therapist in the Paediatric ward and having a hands on experience with the birthing manikin at the Manning Education Centre.

Student’s report

"We learnt about all the before and aftercare when a mother is in labour. We were able to see where the babies went after birth as well. We were also given a tour of each room.

We were able to talk to some of the midwives who told us about their jobs and the different pathways available for their field of work. We also got to meet the play therapist in the Paediatric ward who was working with some children.

Overall it was a really fun and informative day. We learnt a lot of new things. We were very lucky to have such an in depth tour by Kerry Wisely. "

SPORTS NEWS.....YEAR 9 STUDENT WINS GOLDSarah Schiffmann has just completed a very successful track season. In January she competed in the NSW Country Championships winning gold in both the 3000m and 1500m. Her next competition was Regional Little Athletics where she won the 3000m and 1500m, breaking both records and also placing 2nd in the 800m.

When competing at the Athletics NSW Junior Championships Sarah entered the 3000m and 800m and took out a silver medal and 4th place respectively. The placings and times that Sarah received at this competition and other NSW Athletics competitions qualified Sarah to compete in Athletics Australia Junior Championships in March. Sarah chose not to contest the 800m at this event so that she could focus on the 3000m and 1500m. She knew that she would have to do something special to beat all of the fabulous U16 girls from all around the country. Sarah executed her race plan perfectly and she amazingly won the gold medal in the 3000m and also a 4th in the 1500m.

Sarah’s last tack event for the season was State Little Athletics where she won gold in the 3000m, gold and a meet record in the 1500m and a bronze in the 800m.

Sarah is now looking forward to competing in School and Athletics NSW Cross Country competitions during the cooler months.

Sarah credits much of her success to her coach Guy Creber for supporting her and giving her the training and confidence to compete so successfully.

ZONE X-COUNTRYThe Zone X-Country will be held at the Wingham Sporting Complex next Thursday (12th April). Students who have been identified based on performances in PE lessons have been given permission notes and these need to be returned to the front office ASAP.

If students are intending on travelling on the bus, $10 must also paid to the front office. Students who travel by bus will depart GHS at 9am and return at 3pm (in time for afternoon buses).

Walking of the track will be at 10.30am and the first race will commence at 11.30am. The last race starts at 12.30pm. For those students that have been before, the track has not changed from previous years.

A canteen will be available on the day at the venue.

Parents are welcome to attend as spectators and transport their children to and from the venue. Parents who transport

SPORTS NEWS continued.....other students will need to provide the school with a copy of their drivers licence and registration papers, along with completing an Appendix 5 form and provide 100 points of ID to be sighted at the front office.

SPORT CHOICE SHEETS - YEARS 7 AND 8Students in Years 7 and 8 were given their Sports Choice sheets for Term 2 in Roll Call on Thursday 5 April. These are due back to Mr Cameron by the end of Term (Friday 13 April). If a student did not receive one or needs another copy please see Mr Cameron.

Please be mindful that choices are preferential in order on the sports choice (ie. Choice 1 is the sport you most want to do and so on through to Choice 3). It is possible that sports such as Soccer and Hockey will be conducted with the assistance of the local sporting clubs.

If a student does not submit their sport choice sheet they will be placed in a sport at school that has places available. No sport choice sheet = no choice!

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL WEDNESDAY 9 MAYOur annual Athletics Carnival will be held on Wednesday May 9 (Week 2, Term 2). The carnival will be held at the Kay Green Memorial track adjacent to the Rec Centre. Students are asked to assemble on the Netball courts at 8.55am for roll call and will be rotating around the various events during the day. Students who catch buses will be dropped off at the track and also picked up from there in the afternoon.

Parents are welcome to attend and spectate on the day. A permission note and organisation for the day will be sent home with students early in Term 2.

No canteen facilities will be available on the day so students will need to bring their recess and lunch, plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen and appropriate clothing to participate in activities. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours.

For those who qualify, Zone Athletics will be held on Thursday 24 May at South St, Tuncurry.

CONGRATULATIONS TAYLA, YEAR 12 STUDENTYear 12 student, Tayla Predebon has been chosen as part of the Women’s Country Rugby League (CRL) Northern team. Tayla will play against the Southern NSW team on 14 April. This game will be a selection trial for the Country Women’s side to play against the City Women’s side at Mudgee in May. Tayla has been playing as a front rower and is one of the younger players involved.

Tayla is excited to have the opportunity to play along side and against current Jillaroos.

We wish Tayla all the best with her Rugby League career.

FANCY DRINKS ANYONE? On Tuesday 20 March, Year 12 students treated staff to a ‘Fancy Drink Day’. This was part of a major assessment event for the competency Serve Food and Beverage. Students were also assessed for the units of competency Prepare and Serve Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Work Effectively With Others.

Staff were served beverages such as a pineapple and mint frappe along with finger food. Feedback from staff on the day was positive.

Students worked exceptionally well on the day with some great teamwork being observed by their teachers Mrs Harris and Ms Ribbons. Thank you to those staff who continually support our Hospitality Program at GHS.

WORK EXPERIENCE YEAR 10 students are entering their final week of Work Experience!!!! All Year 10 students should be going out on Work Experience Week 11 (April 9 – April 13).

The first week has been very productive and employers have only provided positive feedback!

Students must ensure they follow the procedures outlined in the Work Experience Handbook. It also includes 2 Evaluation forms for Employers. These Evaluation forms must be given to the employers on their first day of work. They should be completed by the employers throughout the placement and collected by the student on their last day of work. They will then be returned to Mr De Angelis upon their return to school Term 2.

All students were also issued with an Emergency Contact Card. They need to ensure they keep and bring this card every day in case there is an issue at work. It should be kept in their wallet, bag, pocket, etc.

What we expect of Students:

Work Experience is part of your Year 10 school work and therefore continued excellent behaviour is expected. You are also representing the school, very much in the public view, and the continued success of the program depends on student/employer cooperation.

TROY RYAN, YEAR 10 STUDENT - RACING Round 2 of the ASBK series held at Wakefield Park, Goulburn 16 - 18 March 2018. Troy was feeling very happy with the progress he was making on the Friday during the three 20-minute practice sessions for the Supersport 300 and R3 class. Making great progress and setting a new personal best lap time during each session throughout the day. Troy is feeling comfortable on each of the bikes and confident that he can get good qualifying times.

Saturday saw two qualifying sessions for both classes each 20-minutes long, and two races the Supersport 300 is 10 laps and the R3 8 laps. Troy again set more personal best times and qualified 12th in the Yamaha R3 Cup and 13th in the Supersport 300. In race one of the Supersport 300 class he had to work hard for his 12th place finish and had a really great race finishing 10th place in race one of the R3 cup.

Sunday, ready to go with four races, two in each class, but it did not go quite to plan. The weather in the morning was looking really good, but it quickly turned terrible with very strong winds and massive amounts of dust blowing everywhere also making visibility hard at times. The first race of the day was the Yamaha R3 Cup, Troy got a reasonable start and with the strong winds it was so hard to hold your line but he had a great battle to finish in 8th. The second race for Troy was the Supersport 300 again he got a reasonable start and was having a great battle with another rider but unfortunately on lap 8 in the last turn his front wheel hit the back of the other riders bike and Troy went down. Next thing he knew he was sitting in the gravel trap in a daze as his helmet had a decent hit to the ground, the racesafe medical team were there quick to attend to him, and this accident then caused the race to be red flagged. After a visit to the racesafe centre and a check over unfortunately Troy could not get a medical clearance to compete in his last 2 races so that was his racing over for the weekend, and mum was glad that there was nothing more serious. Troy will be racing again at Round 3: 19 – 22 April, The Bend Motorsport Park, South Australia.

Shout of thanks for this round for the extra help goes to Darren at Race Centre with his advice we made changes to the bike every session and watched as he improved, this kept dad busy too. Doug, Troy’s brother also came along to help, dad and mum for their support. Also, thanks to all Troy’s sponsors who make his racing possible.
