ACCREDITATION – A process that helps one or more parties have confidence in another party's competence to carry out some activity. Parties seeking accreditation must meet requirements and usually be audited by a third party to demonstrate compliance with those requirements. ISO/IEC guides and standards contain the requirements against which UL is accredited. ACROSS-THE-BOARD (ATB) REQUIREMENTS – ATB requirements are used in the development and revision of UL Standards by providing standardized text and requirements that have been approved for use to enhance consistent interpretation of requirements. ACTIVE PROJECT – A project for which UL staff have all the information, samples, schematics, drawings, etc., required to complete the project and for which a projected completion date has been assigned (see also NEW WORK PROJECT). ADVANCED PLANNING AND SCHEDULING (APS) – A system to enable UL's operations staff to allocate resources and track project status. AFFILIATE – An organization within the UL family of companies. AGENT or AGENCIES – An individual or company (corporation) designated by another company to act on behalf of an Applicant (see also APPLICANT). “AL” LISTING, CLASSIFICATION OR RECOGNITION – “Basic” Listing (or other) established in the name of a party (the Listee) other than an Applicant as a result of an Application from the Applicant, and with the authorization of the Listee. AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARDS – Published Standards submitted to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and designated as American National Standards. These are referred to as “ANSI Approved Standards.” APPEALS PROCESS – The process by which a client, who disagrees with a UL decision relating to conformity assessment services, can discuss their views with the involved supervisory UL staff, without jeopardizing their UL relationship. If the matter cannot be satisfactorily resolved at the supervisor's level, an appeal may be made to a higher managerial level and, if necessary, up to the office of the UL President and CEO. If these differences of opinion involving technical interpretations cannot be resolved within the UL enterprise, other avenues of appeal would include the National Institute of Standards and Technology and UL's Technical Appeals Board. APPENDIX – The portion of UL's FUS Procedure containing instructions for the manufacturer and UL's Field Representative concerning specific responsibilities and required tests for products bearing the UL Mark. The Appendix also outlines tests to be conducted on FUS samples forwarded to UL's facilities (see also STANDARDIZED APPENDIX PAGES).
