Happy New Year and welcome to this month’s Global Video Insights Report!

We’re kicking things off by unveiling our Global Device Rankings for Q4 2012. While Apple’s iPhone remains a winner, Samsung’s Galaxy S III was a major mover this quarter, and RIM’s Blackberry handsets remain popular.

We’ve also included our annual Clippie Awards. Our vibrant community of mobile video enthusiasts has voted on the best of the best from 2012. In a surprising reversal, Whitney Houston outclassed PSY’s “Gangnam Style” in the U.S. with her classic “I Will Always Love You.” Check out the rest of the winners in our report.

And as always, we’ve included monthly top mobile video searches and views in India, Indonesia, UAE and the U.S.

Global Device Rankings: Q4 2012At the top of the list, there were no notable changes, and the iPhone remained dominant. Apple’s device was followed by a basket full of Blackberry handsets. Below the top 10, the previous quarter saw Android’s continued growth thanks to Samsung, led by the Galaxy S III which leapt eighteen spots in just three months. Feature phones continued to slide while Samsung’s low-end Android handsets, the Galaxy Y and Galaxy Ace, moved up our list. Nokia had one bright spot - the venerable Nokia E72 rose five spots against all odds. However, this was not a rally for Symbian as a whole, as the newer Nokia 5233 fell ten spots, perhaps indicating that the basic hardware features of the older E72 have a lasting appeal that the conventional touchscreen 5233 lacks.

December was an ode to superstar Vidya Balan who marched to the beat of her own drum. Her wedding to longtime boyfriend and UTV chief Siddharth Roy Kapur was classy and tasteful, similar to her choices in movie roles. Credited for breaking stereotypes in Bollywood, the National Award winning actress featured among both the top searches as well as top videos for the month. Congratulations Vidya!

Spotlight on India Leading man Salman Khan continues to give other B-Town actors a run for their money by consistently delivering blockbuster hits. The overwhelmingly popular sequel, ‘Dabangg 2’, dominated the box office yet again. With Vuclip, the film was just as successful, claiming the #1 search position this month.

The holidays were top of mind this month for mobile video viewers in UAE. Santa, Christmas shopping and New Year’s video searches and views were quite popular.

Spotlight on UAE One of the top search terms for December was “Best of 2012.” It seems that viewers were searching for the best across a wide range of topics. To meet this interest, Vuclip dedicated a special channel on our Middle East page that features the top videos of the past year.

The Qur’an and Science clip shows how the holy book and science are connected. It illustrates how the Qur’an explains the benefits of olives and figs, describing their many health benefits, and how they can be used for medicinal purposes. The video also shows that these claims have been subsequently validated by modern science.

Due out in May 2013, Star Trek Into Darkness is highly

anticipated. In this film, Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S.

Enterprise are tasked with leading the deadly manhunt to

capture the party responsible for an attack and settle an old score.

Spotlight on the U.S.A.Opening in mid-December of 2012, The Hobbit was one of the year’s most anticipated films. We expect clips and searches related to this epic fantasy adventure film series to play a big role in mobile video in 2013.

This former child actor has managed to escape the cliché perpetuated by Lindsay Lohan (see #3 top search) and has been a key cast member of a long, successful and diverse list of films. This focus has garnered Scarlett Johansson many industry accolades.

The news in the U.S. around this holiday season was anything but light, with an elementary school tragedy and the fiscal cliff looming. Viewers turned to mobile video for escape. “Hollywood” and “funny videos” were the top searches. Celebrities continued to dominate the rest of the searches, as well as the top clips viewed.

Indonesia’s top views and searches for this month reveal a melting pot of interests from Indonesian music, to American cartoons and movies, to the Japanese comic hero Naruto. The holidays were also clearly top of mind with two of the top views focused on spreading cheer.
