Performance - it’s in our DNAThe Wattbike is the brainchild of former World Champion lightweight rower Ian Wilson and high performance coach John Wilson. With over 30 years of experience in elite sport, they recognised the need for a reliable, accurate, factory-calibrated, low cost bike for training and testing.

After discussing their ideas with British Cycling’s Performance Director, Peter Keen, a strict criteria was established and the Wattbike was born. The prototypes were handbuilt by engineer and sport scientist Milan Bacanovic and sport software specialist Dusan Adamovic over 7 years with regular feedback from Peter Keen to ensure the bike met the required standards.

Showcased in March 2008 and launched later that year, the Wattbike has revolutionised indoor cycling setting new standards in accuracy, data, performance monitoring and ride feel and remains the only indoor bike to ever have been endorsed by British Cycling.

The continual development of Wattbike and steadfast commitment to stay at the forefront of both technology and training makes Wattbike the ultimate performance improvement tool, whatever the goal.

We’re obsessed with performance to help you achieve your goals.

The Wattbike is a universal solution for everyone from beginner cyclists and gym users to sophisticated international coaches and performers looking for the winning edge. It is the perfect cycle ergometer.”Peter Keen Director of Sport at Loughborough University, England.

Virgin Active bringing the gym floor to life. The gym floor is the heart and soul of most clubs, so it’s important to keep it up to date with the best equipment, create an innovative and inspiring training space whilst also appealing to all members, whether they are new to fitness or a seasoned veteran at the gym.

From experience we’ve seen how including Wattbikes on the gym floor has encouraged cyclists and triathletes into the club, raised member retention levels and can draw those that stick to the group training classes out into individual training too.

Wattbike initially met with Virgin Active in 2011 to discuss their capacity to support cyclists and triathletes. This was of particular interest as they were about to sponsor the London Triathlon and well as taking note of the rapid increase in cycling popularity in the UK.

After a trial at Virgin Active Twickenham, with the Wattbike team running morning and evening sessions on the bikes to gather member feedback, Virgin Active recognised the potential and purchased four bikes for that site. This then coincided with the design of their Classic Aldersgate club in 2012, the first to use their new layout and innovations of which Wattbike was set to play a big part, with a training suite of eight bikes set up in a dedicated area linked to Power Cycling.

Virgin Active began to offer ‘Wattbike Fast Classes’ and ‘How to Wattbike’ sessions to help members get the very best out of the Wattbike. From then on, Wattbike became a part of every Virgin Active refurbishment, with 4–8 bikes going into every club. They are now building specific ‘Wattbike zones’ and utilising Wattbikes within their group exercise.

“The Wattbike is the only bike that gives you all of the data you would need, from a beginner through to an elite Olympic athlete. The gym user is changing; they’re looking for new innovative, functional ways to train and want the best equipment and technology available.”

In 2015, Virgin Active installed their first state of the art Altitude High Performance Training Studio, which included Wattbikes. The studio can simulate training conditions at 2,500m and 3000m above sea level. This then allows members to undertake Intermittent Hypoxic Training (IHT), where they train at a lower oxygen levels for a short period of time.

Nuffield Health - Wattbike Zones.Nuffield Helath is the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider in the UK. Established in 1957, the charity operates Nuffield Health Hospitals, as well as Nuffield Health, Fitness & Wellbeing Gyms.

At Nuffield Health we pride ourselves on having the best health professionals in the industry. Our health and wellbeing experts, including our Personal Trainers, Physiologists, and Physiotherapists, have all collaborated with Wattbike to create a set of protocols that have been incorporated across our service lines.”

In the last three years, Nuffield Health have also had to respond to strong member-driven demand, as more and more people, hearing that Wattbikes are available in other Nuffield clubs or clinics, have begun to request them at their own locations. This has led to them placing more and more emphasis on Wattbikes to meet customer demand, and as a result they’re now a standard offering in Nuffield Health clubs.

In the Nuffield fitness facilities, the team are now creating Wattbike ‘zones’, often with digital screens to enable group training, competitive races and ‘Power Cycling’ classes. Members can benefit from 1-2-1 and group Wattbikes sessions that are both challenging and engaging for participants. In addition, members can spend time with the Nuffield personal trainers to accurately measure and assess their current fitness levels in order to showcase the impact and progressions their training is having.

“At Nuffield Health we recognised the benefits of the Wattbike early on and we now have Wattbikes in the majority of our gym facilities, medical centres and hospitals. Working with Wattbike was an easy decision for two reasons; firstly, we recognised the rapid increase in the popularity of cycling and triathlon, and Wattbikes provide our members and clients with the best indoor cycling experience they can transfer back outdoors to rides and races.”

David Lloyd getting in the zone for power training. As early adopters of the Wattbike, David Lloyd have been utilising the bikes across their portfolio in a number of ways, experimenting to find the best fit in each facility. In June 2015, they opened their first Wattbike ‘Zone’ at their Southampton club, which included six Wattbikes with a separate screen that visually offers; power training workshops, an introduction to Wattbike sessions, Wattbike testing and virtual Sufferfest classes.

Michelle Dand, Group Health & Fitness Manager at David Lloyd comments: “All of our Wattbikes are on the gym floor, some have their own Zones and some have been mixed in with other equipment to form ‘Performance Zone’ areas as part of our gym innovation programme.”

“We run live workshops in these Zones that create a great atmosphere on the gym floor, and this works to increase the interest from other members observing. Outside of these sessions there are always people using the bikes. From the cycle enthusiasts to the triathletes, to just normal men, women and teenagers; the beauty of the Wattbike is that it can be used for all ages and abilities.”

David Lloyd have continued their investment in quality class-based fitness through an exclusive partnership with The Sufferfest video-based indoor cycling programme, which launched at David Lloyd Southampton and will roll out to selected clubs. The Sufferfest programme runs in their studios and Wattbike zones, bringing them to life whilst motivating and educating members.

Michelle continues:

I’m both a triathlon and cycle coach, so I’ve been aware for a while that the Wattbike are the best on the market from an indoor bike perspective, but the main reason we chose the bikes over other suppliers is their ability to cater for the very fit and the very unfit. In the UK we have a growing market of cyclists and triathletes who appreciate the performance elements of training with power on the Wattbike, but we also have members who are just beginning to understand the benefits of power training so this is a perfect fit for us.”

Equinox Inspired By All Blacks To Choose Best-In-ClassPremium health and fitness operator Equinox, launched its flagship London location in Kensington in October 2012. Originating from one of America’s most high-end fitness chains, the club provides best-in-class facilities, training, equipment and classes.

Explaining the choice to work with Wattbike, Gentry Long, now Managing Director at Equinox UK after moving from the New York site, comments: “From the moment I moved to the UK, I kept hearing so much about the Wattbike and the impact the bikes could have on cycling performance. What I didn’t understand at the time was how this form of power-based indoor rider workout was complimentary for all training programmes.”

“In 2014, I was completely won over when we had the New Zealand All Black’s training at the club and their S&C Coach called ahead asking if he could bring 8 of their Wattbikes to the club for the team and trainers to utilise during their stay.”

During this time, the All Black’s allowed the Wattbikes to be used by members, staff and guests of the club when the team weren’t in session. Throughout this, Gentry saw the bikes in action and received floods of positive feedback from members, as well as beginning his own triathlon training programme using the bikes.

“Equinox has a sizable footprint and we work hard to select only the best pieces of kit. To test usage, we started with 2 Wattbikes, which immediately proved extremely valuable. Two just couldn’t keep up with the demand so within 6 months I had two more bikes to set up a group of four on our fitness floor, which has created a real energy in the gym.”

“Wattbike is definetly a brand that fits well with our Equinox ethos. We are a results-focused brand and the Wattbike is all about improving performance and delivering accurate results for all riders regardless of experience level. From speed to power output, our riders love the features of the bike and the ability for our coaches to assess through pedal efficiency is fantastic.”

Active Nation simulating a specialised training centre.Boutique studios have transformed how consumers approach fitness, offering a purpose for exercise that’s motivational, cathartic and inspiring; all the benefits that come from working in a group setting

From the start of 2015, the Active Nation’s Green Bank Leisure Centre underwent a comprehensive refurbishment which included 14 Wattbikes being installed into a bespoke studio, with two additional bikes placed on the gym floor.Stuart Martin, Managing Director at Active Nation adds: “The Green Bank Leisure Centre has had a dramatic transformation to update and refresh almost every part of the building. We selected Wattbikes because of the benefits they bring; accuracy and calibration, real-ride feel and the ability to monitor and regulate precisely. The studio and gym floor bikes are very popular with people that are into their sports, particularly cycling, triathlon, rugby and football as well as attracting people that want just general fitness improvement.”

The new Wattbike studio has been created to mirror the bikes colours and branding.

“We decided to completely design the studio based on the bikes because it created an exciting, professional atmosphere for our supporters.” Stuart explains. “The feedback we’ve had is that users feel like they’re in a specialised training centre. It brings the studio to life, and transforms the room into more than just an indoor cycling space.”

Njinga Cycling supporting cyclists with Performance Lab.Njinga Cycling, an indoor cycling and performance lab, opened in January 2015 in SW London. They are focused on transforming road cyclists into stronger, faster and more efficient riders and since the start, have seen a strong demand for their well-structured and results focused group classes. They separate themselves from normal spin classes by using Wattbikes, a necessity for their data hungry client base. Cyclists come in with a specific sportive goal, or an issue they need to work on and their instructors, coupled with the data from Wattbike, are able to provide more specific and targeted training and coaching, resulting in incredible improvements to their rider’s performance. They offer group and individual road cycling training and with a mix of pro and trainer Wattbikes are able to cater for all levels of cyclists. Their performance lab is kitted out with 14 Wattbikes and a large data screen which they use for 1-1 coaching, group classes, 8-week performance programmes, pedal technique sessions and physiological testing.

Togo Keynes, Njinga Co-Founder and CEO, comments: “We were looking for a solution that would provide us with an array of data points, a real-cycle feel, a way to monitor pedalling technique and for all indoor bikes to be calibrated the same.”

“All our training sessions are devised by a British Cycling coach and a Wattbike Performance Instructor. Using the bikes to develop the space has really produced a specialised, performance based zone. On top of this, each training session has a clear objective and uses specific training zones, allowing each rider to work to their own fitness abilities, whilst still working on pedal technique to improve their efficiency and power output. That’s why the Wattbike sessions are such a great alternative to spinning classes. Finally, all the data points we are able to access, such as FTP scores, power to weight ratios and peak power numbers allow us not only to track improvements but also provide some healthy competition amongst our riders and our much talked about leaderboards.”

Mark fenn, founder of MSF Fitness, explains why the Wattbike is his fitness tool of choice.Mark Fenn, Founder of MSF Fitness, a private Wattbike personal training and Group Exercise Studio in Shropshire, sheds a light on why he feels Wattbike is the ideal fitness tool for his facility.

He states: “Having worked within the Sport and Leisure industry for 20 years as a freelance instructor for fitness facilities, teaching group Spin and Indoor Bike classes, I developed an awareness of the Wattbike early on, as I quickly recognised the many advantages of the bike. I used the fitness tool for personal gain and 1:1 training for a number of years but wanted to share the benefits with larger groups of exercisers – I was keen to accurately show people their progress.”

In June 2013 Mark founded MSF Fitness Ltd, which opened on Stafford Park and he was able to do just that – the studio which now holds 13 Wattbikes, attracts cyclists, non-cyclists and triathletes.

Mark adds: “Our Instructors hold 20 classes a week and use the Wattbikes to offer progressive training, fitness testing and pedal technique sessions. The bikes are also used to aid rehabilitation and more recently they’ve played an important part in social events, such as fitness challenges, which have helped strengthen a feeling of community at MSF Fitness.”

“The studio is constantly evolving as we continually take advantage of the endless benefits of the Wattbike. We’re proud users of the bike and love that it suits peoples of all ages and abilities – we take great pleasure watching our members train together, all at different levels, all feeling the benefit.”

Ben Keenan, founder of Suffershire, explains how he created the premium indoor cycling studio. In May 2015, Ben Keenan founded Suffershire Indoor Cycling, a Cheltenham based, bespoke Wattbike studio which hosted world class coaches and workout videos from The Sufferfest. Having chosen the Wattbike, Ben worked with the team to transform the space to mirror the bikes themselves, and create a premium indoor cycling studio.

Ben explains: “When we were researching indoor bikes we kept coming back to Wattbike. The build quality, the sport science and the amount of data and feedback for the riders is phenomenal. When we planned the studio, we knew that we would be catering for a lot of cyclists, from beginners through to professionals. It therefore made sense to transform the space to reflect Wattbike, because it is such a well-known, and respected brand within the sport and the industry.”

“We have all abilities filling our sessions, from ladies in their 60’s who cycle with friends for fun through to an ex professional racer. Even our two hour hill climbing session late on a Friday night is full.”

“The fact we only have 10 bikes means there’s a real social aspect, it’s not a large room of faceless people, its small group training designed to motivate and encourage, while the Power Cycling software allows me to keep an eye on people’s performance as individuals.”

Wattbike Alternative Aerobic Assessment officially offered to injured soldiers. The world has changed dramatically in the last 30 years; technology advancements in particular have transformed the way we live our day-to-day lives. Organisations have had to adapt to this, none more so than the British Army. Conflicts, threats and tactics have changed, and how we train and test our troops has had to adjust in light of this. For the last 30 years, the Army has tested Soldiers fitness levels via a number of assessments including a timed 1.5 mile run, sit ups and press up tests. Recently, however, it has become increasingly apparent that these tests require updating as they do not fully reflect the demands of current and future military operations.

Gary Mason, the Armed Forces Sales Manager for Wattbike, has been working with the UK armed forces for the past 20 years so has seen first-hand the changes that need to be made. Having started working with Wattbike in 2008, right at the start of production, he immediately recognised the benefits that the Wattbike could provide to answering the current difficulties in testing. So in collaboration with the RAPTC (Royal Army Physical Training Corps) he raised the idea of ‘offload training’ and an alternative option to the run designed to test the physical capabilities of troops.

The first to really welcome the concept of using the Wattbikes were the Special Forces in 2008 who immediately bought into what the Wattbike could offer and integrated it into their programmes. This was shortly followed by Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court who initially asked for 2 bikes, followed by 13 more due to its success in their rehabilitation programmes.

Soon after, the Defence Primary Healthcare centres took a total of 350 Wattbikes across their portfolio of 14 Regional Rehabilitation Centres and 152 Primary Care Rehabilitation Centres.

In 2013, Gary joined forces with Eddie Fletcher, Wattbike Consultant Sport & Exercise Physiologist, and together they spent two years developing, designing and testing an alternative to the 1.5 mile run, what became the Wattbike Alternative Aerobic Assessment (A3 Test), the answer the army had been looking for.

Page 29: Global Reference Book - Wattbike · Showcased in March 2008 and launched later that year, the Wattbike has revolutionised indoor cycling setting new standards in accuracy, data, performance

29

The A3 test was designed as a three part assessment on the Wattbike that allowed PTI’s (Physical Training Instructors) and the Chain of Command to accurately gauge and monitor the aerobic fitness of each individual, provide a challenging low impact individualised training routine and offer an alternative to the 1.5mile running element of the current PFA, should an individual not be able to currently complete this part of the test due to injury.

Standards are correlated via predicted VO2 Max with the 1.5 mile run. The test consists of a sub-maximal ramp test to determine individuals training zones, a 12 week individualised training plan and a 10 minute continuous ride to achieve gender and age related standards, in watts per kg of body mass.

Having taken the idea of the A3 to the British Army, support quickly grew amongst decision makers, in particular from Brigadier John Donnelly, Director of Personal Services (Army),and Major Ian Phillips and Lt. Col. Brian Dupree both members of the RAPTC. This support resulted in a movement of discussion within the ranks and in April 2015 the Wattbike A3 pilot launched, with 600 Wattbikes introduced across the country and PTI’s being offered Wattbike training, in order to run a year long evaluation period to see how the alternative test performed in real settings.

“The Alternative Aerobic Assessment on the Wattbike was an exciting new development and our first official partnership with a supplier to progress physical training assessments. These bikes give people the tools they need to set specific goals, giving a real sense of purpose to their training. The research undertaken by the RAPTC with Wattbike has allowed us to design an assessment that will allow soldiers to stay fit and injury free, benefiting both the Army and individuals.”

Over the past year, the test has seen great success and continues to pick-up of support. There are now 1,500 Wattbikes within Army units and now over 100 specially trained RAPTI’s. These Master Trainers will be delivering ongoing ‘train the trainer’ courses throughout the Army.

Based on the success of the 2015 evaluation period, the Wattbike A3 test is now to be officially written into the MATT2 Fitness document (Military Annual Training Tests and Workplace Induction Programme), which maps out the mandatory fitness tests, from April 2016, written by Major Ian Phillips, as the mandatory test for medically downgraded troops.

Fire Service Choose Wattbike As New Training ToolTechnology is progressively working its way into the sport and fitness industry, with many gyms, health clubs and now public services adjusting to the changing fitness environments. Following on from the British Army’s adoption of the Wattbike for testing military recruits, the Fire Service are the latest organisation to implement the Wattbike into their fitness and rehabilitation training.

Lancashire Fire & Rescue have purchased over forty bikes, placing at least one in each station, allowing firefighters to be able to accurately monitor fitness levels. All UK based firefighters are subject to annual fitness tests, to ensure they are able to carry out their day job - the Wattbike allows for more precise and measurable training and the bikes accurate data puts men and women in the best possible position to train and complete assessments.

The Wattbike is an accessible, non-impact training tool. The bike is a safer, more precise fitness option, which allows the firefighters to scientifically prove their improvements over time.

The sophisticated training that Wattbike offer, really takes into consideration the physical demands that firefighters face. Specialist training is currently being rolled out to Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) in the Lancashire region, allowing them to design bespoke training programmes for firefighters.

Victorian Institute of SportH.Brennan PhD Sports Science / S&C Coordinator We have been using Wattbike’s for the last 4 years for the preparation of our Olympic athletes. Athletes from Rowing, Cycling, Triathlon, Hockey, Netball, Waterpolo, T&F and Gymnastics have all benefitted from using the bikes. The bikes are easy to set up, and easy to use which is just what the athletes want, while also offering a more in-depth analysis for the sports science staff and coaches.

The biggest advantage is being able to get to get an accurate measure of work rate which isn’t available on other bikes. Its easy to compare athletes in the same session, track their progress over time, and use the data to individualise training programs. The bikes offer an excellent form of cross training whether to supplement the athletes training and cardiovascular fitness or where there is a need to decrease the impact loads associated with running related activities.

“The robustness of the bikes and the ability to do sprint work on them makes them ideal for neuromuscular power development.”

With the ability to assess left and right imbalances make the bikes perfect for rehabilitation and the ability to track an athlete’s progress back to full fitness is essential in this setting. The bikes offer laboratory reliability and accuracy in a gym setting.

Wattbike powering Premier League playersFor managers and coaches, structuring their team’s pre-season programme correctly, and making accurate comparisons between players, can make all the difference to their prospects for the season.

2016 Premier League winners, Leicester City Football Club, had an incredible season and have been using the Wattbike for power development and conditioning since 2012.

Mitchell Willis, LCFC Strength & Power Coach, explains: “I first came across the Wattbike when I worked with the Leicester Tigers Rugby Union team in 2009. We used the bikes extensively with the academy and first team squads. When I moved to Leicester City Football Club in 2012, the Wattbikes were amongst the first pieces of equipment that came into the new gym.”

We never considered any other bikes, I knew the Wattbikes well; how to use them, the physical qualities and the amount of feedback the Performance Monitors provide. We have a philosophy of ‘training = testing and testing = training’ and we continually monitor performance, therefore Wattbike perfectly matches this.”

The players use the bikes for power development which involves intermittent supramaximal bursts with extended recovery periods. This allows lower limb power to develop, whilst safely overloading the players using the air resistance and magnet settings. Conditioning sessions focus on longer intervals of continuous work on the bikes, targeting specific energy system development.

“The bikes have also played a key role with international players who have returned late to us this pre-season – we administered additional ‘off-feet - conditioning sessions using the bikes to help bring them get up to speed with the rest of the squad.”

The time players spend on the bikes is dependent on the phase, training or injury status. Some players perform up to 3 sessions per week. Midfielders, Andy King and Matty James use the Wattbike frequently; Andy predominantly for power development and Matty has utilised the bike a lot during his rehab from ACL injury.”

Wattbike working for Saracens Squad; conditioning, offloading and rehabilitationThe Saracens, who were victorious Double Champions for the 2016 season, winning both the Premiership and Euro-pean Cup, maximise Wattbike training, and the data provided throughout the season.

Phillip Morrow, Performance Director explains: “The Wattbike is a tough piece of training equipment, which can be used to challenge all of your energy systems as well as pushing the legs to produce force when you’re fatigued. The ability to measure power output is great for setting targets for the players as well as giving us the capability to ma-nipulate sessions to target different aspects of training.”

With six bikes, the Saracens focus on conditioning sessions throughout the season as a form of offload training, limit-ing the amount of running the players are doing, which is key for the larger, load bearing players. The full squad then work on the bikes for maximum energy sprints and general energy system training through preseason.

Philip adds: “We also make use of the bikes a lot with our injured and rehabbing players when they are limited with the amount of ‘on feet’ work they can do.”

Saracens and England-capped player, Richard Wigglesworth, suffered a shoulder injury at the end of the 2016 Championship Cup Final. Over the summer, he carried out a 12-week rehabilitation programme, of which the Wattbike played a central role:

“My injury meant I couldn’t run for 8 weeks, so I needed an alternative to maintain my fitness. The Wattbike, and the resistance it allows, were the closest thing to replicate the ‘running week’ of preseason training that the rest of the team will be doing.”

Saracens and England back-row, Billy Vunipola is renowned for his power and force, and is a player to be reckoned with on the Wattbike. Billy remarks: “The Wattbike plays a massive part of our anaerobic and off-feet, aerobic work. It saves us loading our legs every day, as in pre-season you get through a lot of running, so the bikes allow us to still improve fitness but not aggravate the joints.”

We use the bikes every other day through pre-season, and on Monday mornings through the season – naturally we’re quite a competitive bunch through and there’s definitely no hiding on the Wattbike.”

Cricket AustraliaThis Centre addresses the technical infrastructure of high performance programs across the country to enable a consistent approach to tracking talented cricketers from the backyard to baggygreen. This involves the implementation of standardized fitness assessments, medical and physiotherapy screening protocols on a routine basis. National working groups, with representatives from state associations in physiotherapy, fitness and medicine meet annually to review data and assess relationships to injury and performance. Benchmarking current practice against world best practice is an important strategy of these working groups.

“A key function is to provide strength and conditioning services to high performance programs in Australian cricket.”

This covers the Australian women’s program (AIS Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars), Australian women’s youth squad (Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars), Centre of Excellence men’s program (AIS Scholarship holders) and the Australian U/19 men’s squad. Case management of nationally contracted male and female players and AIS scholarship holders when sustaining injury ensures athletes receive best practice and treatment continuity. This involves working closely with Australian teams and state association medical and support staff to promote an effective return to play for injured athletes.

The Australian men’s cricket team receives long term sport science support as well as servicing on an as needs basis. Longer term projects with the team include quantification of match workloads using GPS technology, innovative methods to supplement skills training and detailed anthropometric profiling to monitor player physical capacities.

Sydney SwansAt the Sydney Swans we use stationary cycling sessions as our main form of off-legs cardiovascular fitness. When the time came to replace our ageing spin bikes, we completed a comprehensive evaluation of stationary bikes available on the market, and also listened to player preferences. Wattbike came out on top every time in terms of bike-setup and bike-feel, but most importantly in the data that the bikes provide. This aspect greatly assists with real-time feedback to the rider, as well as the ability to monitor and track individual performance across time.

“We now use the Wattbikes in a number of ways, and they form an important complement to the use of our simulated altitude room.”

During group fitness sessions we are able to set power output targets for all players, creating a competitive environment in which players get more out of each session. The bikes are also used heavily for exercise rehabilitation as the bikes provide the ability to easily monitor and assess cycling technique in real-time and to keep track of individual fitness. We have also recently started using the bikes for targeted fitness testing, with the customisable programs, as well as the accuracy and reliability of the data provided by the bikes being invaluable.
