Team Freedom lays keel on nation's 23rdLittoral combat ship

New military-grade cloud-based networkcapability

The Lockheed Martin-led industry team officially laid the keel for the US Navy's 23rd Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), the future USSCooperstown, in a ceremony held at Fincantieri Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wisconsin.

Ellen R. Tillapaugh, Mayor of the Village of Cooperstown, New York, completed the time-honoured tradition and authenticatedthe keel by welding her initials onto a steel plate that will be placed in the ship.

"It is a tremendous honour to authenticate the keel for the future USS Cooperstown," Tillapaugh said. "Ships and their crewshave a special bond with their namesake, and I know the village of Cooperstown will proudly support this ship throughout herconstruction, and when she is commissioned and enters the Navy fleet."

The Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marineteam is currently in full-rate production of the Freedom-variantof the LCS, and has delivered five ships to the US Navy todate. The future USS Cooperstown is one of eight ships invarious stages of construction at Fincantieri Marinette Marine.

"We are proud to build another proven warship that allowsour Navy to carry out their missions around the world," saidJoe DePietro, Lockheed Martin vice president of smallcombatants and ship systems. "We look forward to workingwith the US Navy to continue building and delivering highlycapable and adaptable Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Shipsto the fleet."

LCS 23 will be the first vessel named for Cooperstown.Her name honours the veterans who are members of theNational Baseball Hall of Fame located in the namesake city.These 64 men served in conflicts ranging from the Civil Warthrough the Korean War.

Lockheed Martin's Freedom-variant LCS is highlymanoeuvrable, lethal and adaptable. Originally designed to supportfocused missions such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare, the team continues to evolve capabilities based onrigorous Navy operational testing; sailor feedback and multiple successful fleet deployments. The Freedom-variant LCS integrates newtechnology and capability to affordably support current and future mission capability from deep water to the littorals.

Cohort plc company, MASS, has developed a new military-grade cloud-based network capability. The cloud-based system includesoffice functionality, messaging, private secured intranet, video calling and secured software all hosted on UK Government approvedsystems. Organisations from energy companies, humanitarian agencies and election monitors in post-conflict countries can nowaccess a military-grade command and control capability hosted securely in the cloud via the G Cloud 10 portal.

MASS has extensive experience in this area working with secure LAN and WAN environments. The company designed aclassified network which enables fully encrypted transmission of classified information over the internet, supporting effectivecommand and control of the EU run, Operation ATALANTA, both ashore and afloat. The new service can be deployed in multipleareas anywhere in the world at any scale, and can be tailored to include specialist customer applications and databases. Thesoftware is also adaptable for smaller organisations who may need the service intermittently and can utilise it on future occasions.

Additional functionality can be specified to include ERP and GIS applications and database hosting. As well as options such asthe provision of ruggedised end user computing devices, encryption of data at rest and in transit, global connectivity by satellite,local encrypted private telephony, and connectivity over digital radio, mobile telephony or PMR in deployed locations.

Teams and organisations that would benefit from the Command and Control MASS cloud-based system include:

US Air Force's first advanced GPS IIIsatellite shipped to Cape Canaveralfor launchOn August 20, Lockheed Martin shipped the US Air Force's first GPS III space vehicle (GPS III SV01) to Cape Canaveral for itsexpected launch in December. Designed and built at Lockheed Martin's GPS III Processing Facility near Denver, the satellite wasshipped from Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado, to the Cape on a massive Air Force C-17 aircraft.

GPS III will be the most powerful and resilient GPS satellite ever put on orbit. Developed with an entirely new design for US andallied forces, it will have three times greater accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming capabilities over the previousGPS II satellite design block, which makes up today's GPS constellation.

GPS III also will be the first GPS satellite to broadcast the new L1C civil signal. Shared by other international global navigationsatellite systems, like Galileo, the L1C signal will improve future connectivity worldwide for commercial and civilian users.

"Once on orbit, the advanced technology of this first GPS III space vehicle will begin playing a major role in the Air Force's planto modernize the GPS satellite constellation," said Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin's program manager for Navigation Systems."We are excited to start bringing GPS III's new capabilities to the world and proud to continue to serve as a valued partner for theAir Force's positioning, navigation and timing mission systems."

Recent developments in UAStechnologyUnmanned aerial systems (UAS) deliver unparalleled capabilities to the military, mapping potential routes and enemyterritory, performing vital information, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, providing training targets for soldiers,and attacking enemies from the safety of a remote location. Technological developments are coming thick and fast inthis field as demand booms – here, we take a look at recent reports.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned aerial systems(UAS), drones – there are a lot of different phrases in play forthese technological marvels, but they all amount to the samething. First envisaged in 1898 by Nikola Tesla, who patentedthe idea for remotely operated vehicles (RPAs), UAS wereexpected to ultimately end warfare, according to Tesla: “For byreason of its certain and unlimited destructiveness it will tend tobring about and maintain permanent peace among nations.” Ofcourse, we all know that, if anything, the opposite has becometrue; with greater technological capabilities, we’ve only enhancedour ability to do harm to each other.

UAS have been a great boon to the military sector, fulfillingmissions too dull, dirty or dangerous for humans (the three Ds).With the incredible technology breakthroughs from government,commercial and academia alike, we’ve moved far beyond theoriginal application of remote warfare, with new utilizationopportunities including product delivery, testing scientificprinciples, agricultural, and aerial photography becoming muchmore mainstream. Lately, we’ve seen a spate of consumer-gradeUAS launched to market as enthusiasts demand products theycan use themselves for social media applications and even UASracing. Indeed, today, civilian UASs vastly outnumber militaryUAS.

The adoption of UAS technology by consumers has resulted

in some interesting consequences, particularly in enhancingthe range of UAS expertise available. While consumer-gradesUAS are obviously unsuitable for military applications, theincreased rate of development means new technologies arebeing produced by commercial innovators, and an increasingnumber of engineers are becoming accustomed to designing,manufacturing and programming such devices.

A booming marketIn a world of social media where people increasingly live outtheir lives online, having the ability to share 4K video footage ofyour exploits as captured aerially from your personal UAS is(arguably) a great benefit. However, when it comes to nationalsecurity, keeping the country safe, and recovering from a naturaldisaster, it’s the military-grade UASs that are making all thedifference. Accordingly, even the highest-spec UASs are undera near-constant state of development to enable more capabilitiesthan ever before, ensuring increased communications,resilience, power and longevity.

In January, NSR released its ‘Unmanned Aircraft Systems(UAS) Satcom and Imaging Markets, 4th Edition report,’ whichhas forecast a cumulative US$19.7 billion revenue opportunityfor UAS satellite communications and US$4.3 billion forcommercial UAS imaging services in the 2016-2026 period. The

growth is attributed to an accelerating government and militaryUAS market, with increased adoption rates for unmannedsystems globally.

According to the report, the demand for intelligence,surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and combat capabilityis on the rise, due to global conflicts in the Middle East andAsia. Consequently, the 2016-2017 period notes a significantUAS supply increase from the US, China and Middle Easterncountries. NSR reports that this growth highlights the opportunityin satcom terminals and capacity services for both satelliteoperators and equipment manufacturers. The demand formedium altitude long endurance (MALE) airframes continuesto outshine other satcom enabled airframes, and NSR projectsmore than 8,000 satcom in-service units by 2026, with MALEsystems accounting for almost 75 percent of the market.

“The steady increase of US activity in Asia, as conflicts movetowards the South China Sea and North Korea, along with aglobal rise in drone-based warfare to reduce soldier casualties,give rise to a proliferation in Beyond-Line-Of-Sight (BLOS)satcom market for drones,” stated Gagan Agrawal, NSR Analystand report author. “These conflicts, along with a need forpeacekeeping, border patrols, and global humanitarian effortshave spawned a growing demand for high bandwidth video ISR.”He continued: “For smaller sized UAS, imaging is the primaryapplication in the commercial domain. This is fuelled by needsof the energy sector, industrial inspection, and surveying, wheremapping and analytics services via UAS, as compared to manualwork, offer companies a 2-3x cost savings potential. As civilianregulations and VC-backed start-ups mature through 2018,businesses will look to solidify an enterprise-service orientedB2B model, paving the way for stability and wider recognitionfor this industry.”

Schiebel demonstrates ground-breaking CAMCOPTER S-100 capabilitiesAustria based UAS manufacturer Schiebel delivered a ground-breaking demonstration in April of its CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS,which with Airbus Helicopters’ manned H145 vehicle, completeda series of Manned UnManned Teaming (MUM-T) flights. Level5 interoperability was achieved by providing the user onboardthe manned aircraft with full command and control over the UASand its payload, including launch and recovery.

The purpose of the demonstration, which took place as partof a technology partnership between the Austrian Armamentsand Defense Technology Agency (ARWT) and Schiebel, was toexplore the benefits and challenges of delivering MUM-T flightoperations, especially those with highly valuable, mission-enhancing advantages for army aviation. MUM-T leverages thestrengths of both manned and unmanned systems by providingpilots of manned aircraft with the ability to take full advantage of

the ISR capabilities of the UAS, significantly improving safetyand decision-making in complex, contested missions.

“This is a perfect example of Schiebel’s commitment tostaying at the cutting-edge of developments and capabilities,”said Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of the Schiebel Group.“The CAMCOPTER S-100 offers unsurpassed ISR capabilitiesand as such significantly enhances manned aircraft sensors,which is particularly valuable in complex operations anddangerous environments.”

According to Schiebel, UAS are well-suited for providing an

aerial overview and operating above manned assets while themanned assets benefit from using local terrain. This approachof enhancing coverage and timeliness of information whilekeeping pilots and manned assets safe enables commandersto maximize the advantages offered by both platforms.

“Manned UnManned Teaming multiplies the capabilities ofboth systems”, said Mark R. Henning, Program Manager atAirbus Helicopters. “Smaller UAS with vertical take-off andlanding capabilities can, for example, fly around obstacles astrees or buildings closer than a helicopter could. They are ableto explore unknown territory and deliver information to thehelicopter crew which is operating from a safe position and thenstep in with the helicopter’s superior effects having received aclear picture from the UAS.”

“Another key advantage of such an approach is improveddatalink security,” explains Schiebel’s Chief Technical OfficerChris Day. “The datalink between the manned and unmannedplatform can be moved from a static to a dynamic environment,away from the ground, making it more robust and harder todetect.”

In yet another advancement, May saw Schiebel andOverwatch successfully integrate PT8 Oceanwatch, a smalltarget detection payload, on the CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS. ThePT-8 Oceanwatch delivers an image-based wide area maritimesearch capability that significantly extends the coverage areaand makes the CAMCOPTER S-100 an even more powerfulnaval patrol solution.

Oceanwatch autonomously detects small targets on theocean surface, solving the challenge of searching for smallobjects over vast areas and greatly outperforming conventionalcameras that face insurmountably large areas when zoomed inand invisible targets when zoomed out. It is an ideal solution fora number of applications including ISR reconnaissancegathering, search and rescue, anti-piracy and countless othermaritime security operations.

“Because of its proven performance and multi-payloadcapabilities, the S-100 is already the most successful maritimevertical take-off and landing UAS,” notes Hans Georg Schiebel,Chairman of the Schiebel Group. “Fitted with powerful payloadssuch as Oceanwatch and a best-in-class electro-optical/infra-red (EO/IR) gimbal, it provides an unsurpassed capacity for arange of mission-critical naval operations.”

Later in July, Schiebel demonstrated the search and rescueas well as maritime surveillance capabilities of the CAMCOPTERS-100 UAS for the Belgian Navy. The trials were aimed at buildingan enhanced knowledge base and developing a successfulconcept of operations for the use of UAS in support of searchand rescue as well as ISR missions.

For the demonstration flights, the helicopter was equippedwith two payloads, the L3 Wescam MX-10 and the OverwatchImaging PT-8 Oceanwatch, as well as an automatic identificationsystem (AIS) receiver and a rescue drop box. The flight trialsincluded various search and rescue scenarios in a land-based

setting in Lombardsijde and in a maritime environment in thenaval port of Zeebrugge.

“The trials with the S-100 have been very successful andhave taught us a lot about the possibilities of such systems andsensors, the ability to operate in Belgian’s confined airspace,opportunities for the domain of coastal security and prospectsfor further developments,” said Lt. Commander D. Biermans, whois in charge of the Belgian Navy’s Maritime Tactical UAS(MTUAS) Project Team. “Given the complexity of introducing aMTUAS within the Navy and its impact on the concepts ofoperation and tactics, this was a first informative step and willbe part of a series of tests and experiments with a variety ofvehicles and sensors.”

Aeryon announces next generation SkyRanger R80 droneAeryon Labs produces UAS for military and defence, publicsafety and commercial clients the world over, setting the standardfor real-time, secure, aerial intelligence for more than 20 defencegroups globally. Its latest development came in May, when thecompany unveiled the SkyRanger R80, the newest addition toits family of SkyRanger UAS, designed to meet the demandingrequirements of the defence and security markets. The originalAeryon SkyRanger, later renamed the SkyRanger R60, hasamassed more than 10,000 flight hours and has been deployedin more than 30 countries.

The SkyRanger R80 is a robust, multi-mission UAS thatprovides reliable operations in harsh environments anddemanding weather conditions, with a wide range of next-generation hardware and software features. With a payloadcapacity of up to 2kg, the SkyRanger R80 can carrier heavieroptics and multi-sensor payloads that were previously restrictedto much larger, more expensive fixed-wing UAS. With the newOsprey carry and delivery payload, operators can attach anddeliver nearly any object up to 2kg such as radios, groundsensors, medkits, life vests, and more. The R80 adds a newfront-mounted EO/IR payload (with image fusion) to supplementbottom-mounted, non-camera payloads.

Another feature of the SkyRanger R80 is its new PayloadDevelopment Kit (PDK), which extends payload developmentto end users and third-party integrators, enabling the rapiddevelopment of mission-specific payloads for the R80 platform.The R80 also offers an Application Development Kit (ADK) tointerface with other control applications across a set of secureAPIs.

The SkyRangerR80’s power is delivered from four redundantbatteries, each rated below 99Wh for easy transportation oncommercial aircrafts. With its simple plug-in tether kit, co-developed with Hoverfly Technologies, Inc, the R80 can providepersistent endurance for long-term overwatch or surveillanceapplications, then can be easily reconfigured quickly back intofree-flight mode. The UAS’ multiple embedded NVIDIA TX2processors essentially makes it a flying supercomputer with an

engine for real-time artificial intelligence at the network edge,including object detection and classification. To enableautonomous operations or flight in GPS-denied environments,the SkyRanger R80 includes multiple sensors providing flightcontrol inputs, including four dedicated computer vision cameras.

Using Aeryon’s new Multi-Aircraft Control software, a singlepilot can fly multiple SkyRanger R80s from a single GroundControl Station (GCS), on a single network, in coordinated semi-autonomous flight plans. Multi-Aircraft Control builds uponAeryon’s proven Automatic In-Air Replacement (AIR) technologyenabling two R80s to automatically replace one another in flight,automatically handing off camera subjects while maintainingcontinuous eyes on target. Mission success is underpinned bytwo fully redundant communication links, and two flightcomputers. For operations in denied RF environments, or beyondvisual line of sight, the SkyRanger R80 is able to execute semi-autonomous missions without an active wireless link.

To meet the unique requirements of the United StatesDepartment of Defense and its other federal customers, AeryonDefense USA (a wholly owned US subsidiary of Aeryon Labs),will customize the commercially available SkyRanger R80, whichwill be known as the R80D. Delivery of the R80D began in May2018.

CPI to provide Cubic Mission Solutions with UAScommunications technologyIn May, the Antenna Systems Division (ASD) of Communications& Power Industries (CPI) received multiple contract awards fromCubic Mission Solutions, a business division of CubicCorporation. Cubic Mission Solutions provide networkedCommand, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence,Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) capabilities fordefense, intelligence, security and commercial missions.

Under the awards, CPI ASD will supply its HD-30T GroundData Terminal for tracking UAS from the ground and enablingencrypted Ku-band communications using Cubic RF

modems. CPI ASD will also provide airborne advanced tacticalcommon data link (TCDL) antenna products, including the AT-20 two-axis Data Link Antenna. This low-weight, high-gaintechnology ensures reliable connectivity with UAS operatingabove warfighters on the ground.

The compact design of CPI ASD’s terminals providesmaximum gain for their size and weight, which translates intoan increased range of operation for the UAS and warfighters.Like all CPI ASD products for military applications, the antennasare custom-developed on a proven product platform and arefully qualified to stringent military standards.

“CPI Antenna Systems Division maintains an R&D mindsetand enjoys the challenge of innovative requirements,” said SteveLonngren, Senior Vice President of the Division. ”Our corecompetence is taking an idea and articulating it into a deliverablesystem, working in close partnership with the customerthroughout design and qualification. That approach hasdemonstrated value to Cubic as it continually adapts its programsin support of military requirements.”

General Atomics tests UAS with spot beams from Intelsat’sEpicNG networkIt’s particularly vital for defence forces that, on top of having thelatest UAS technology at their disposal, that those UAS are ableto communicate effectively with critical personnel; real-time ISRcan make all the difference between mission success andmission failure. The Intelsat EpicNG network of high throughputsatellites (HTS) with its high capacity spot beams is ideal forproviding mission-critical on-the-move communications.

Back in November 2017, Intelsat General successfullydemonstrated beam switching capabilities of an in-flight UASoperating on the company’s Intelsat 29e satellite, validating thecompatibility of the Intelsat EpicNG platform with the newly-developed beam switching capability of the Block 5 Predator B/MQ-9 from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI).

This is the first in-flight switch of an MQ-9 on a highthroughput satellites (HTS). Beam switching is particularlyimportant for US and allied military forces looking to expandUAS operations to high performance, multiple-spot beam, high-throughput satellites such as Intelsat EpicNG.

The multiple spot beam design inherent in HTS like theIntelsat EpicNG system substantially increases the satellite’sthroughput, allows for the use of much smaller antennas, higherperformance from existing antennas, and enhances the securityon the satellite over traditional wide beam satellites. This samedesign also requires that mobility applications across largegeographic areas must traverse multiple spot beams on thesatellite.

These results, verified by General Atomics, demonstrate apath forward for Reaper and Predator UAS to fly confidently onIntelsat EpicNG, including the additional benefits of higherthroughput capabilities, extensive footprint and enhancedresilience.

“The images and other data collected by unmanned aircraftsystems are critical for many military operations,” said SkotButler, President of Intelsat General Corporation. “These testsdemonstrate the capability of the high-throughput IntelsatEpicNG platform to support aircraft as they travel long distancesacross multiple spot beams.”

During the tests, the UAS flew a 1,075 nautical miles roundtrip to enable it to switch between two spot beams on the Intelsat29e satellite. Command and control as well as sensor datatransmissions from the aircraft were switched successfullymultiple times between the two beams. To conduct the testing,the FAA granted GA-ASI a Certificate of Waiver or Authorization(COA) that authorized the Block 5 MQ-9 to fly in airspacemanaged by air traffic controllers without the requirement ofutilizing a ‘chase’ airplane. During the entire flight, control of theUAS was possible via the spot beams from Intelsat 29e.

US Army and US Air Force advance UAS capabilitiesUS defence forces, inarguably the world biggest spender onmilitary technologies, have made several recent investments inUAS to advance their capabilities.

October 2017 saw General Atomics Aeronautical Systems,Inc. (GA-ASI) officially transition its production line from the MQ-1C Gray Eagle to its new long-range variant, the MQ-1C ERGray Eagle Extended Range following the completion of thelast contracted MQ-1C aircraft.

GA-ASI’s investment in airframe composite tooling hasenabled it to start manufacturing the MQ-1C ER ahead of

schedule, with its production running in parallel with the MQ-1Cline. Following on from operational testing and evaluation in theSpring of 2018, customer deliveries of the MQ-1C ER wereexpected to start in the Summer of 2018. The MQ-1C Gray EagleUAS has been fielded to 12 US Army operational units and hasaccumulated more than 290,000 flight hours. The MQ-1C is theArmy’s most active kinetic platform in theatre.

“We are proud of our many years of effort to complete thefactory build of 165 MQ-1C Gray Eagles for the US Army,” saidDavid R. Alexander, President of Aircraft Systems at GA-ASI.“We’re now focused on delivering the Gray Eagle ER and believeits endurance and other improved capabilities will be a gamechanger on the battlefield.”

In addition to improved reliability and maintainability, MQ-1C ER brings considerable improvement in endurance andpayload capabilities. As part of a recent endurance test flight,an MQ-1C ER aircraft flew for 41.9 consecutive hours, asignificant increase over the 25-hour capability of the currentGray Eagle UAS.

Later in January, the US Air Force awarded a new US$48million contract to Aurora Flight Sciences for the continueddevelopment of the Orion UAS. Orion is a twin-engine highperformance UAS that can stay aloft for more than 100 hours ata time with payloads in excess of 1,000 pounds. Developmentof the Orion started in 2006, its first flight was in August 2013,and in December 2014, the Orion established the current UASworld endurance record with an 80-hour, 2 minute and 52 secondflight. The new contract funds the development of a certifiedversion of Orion that will be suitable for deployment anywherein the world. GMC

What will soldiers look like in 2028?Technology is constantly developing, and nowhere is thismore evident than in government and defence. Withmodernisation programmes and increased military spend,there’s a great deal of innovation in the sector. Here,Jonathan DiGiacomandrea, Applications EngineeringManager for global military battery specialist UltralifeCorporation, explains how technological advancement isreshaping what soldiers will look like in ten years’ time.

During his first state of the union address in January 2018,US President Donald Trump emphasised the importance of USCongress increasing military spend during his presidency. Citingthreats from terrorist groups and rival countries, he stated that,“In confronting these dangers, we know that weakness is thesurest path to conflict, and unmatched power is the surest meansof our defence.”

The US is not alone in this shift to increased military spend.2017 saw the European Union (EU) unveil a defence fund,marking the first time that money from the EU’s budget wasallocated to defence. While this may be a worrying reflection ofglobal tensions, it does provide an opportunity for innovationsin military technology.

Smaller, more portable devicesIn Ultralife’s years of serving the government and defencesectors, we’ve seen the technology change considerably. Thiswas initially steered by a number of countries launching theirown future soldier programs, following the introduction of theUS’ original scheme using that name. The program upgradedall military gear, particularly infantry, to the latest technology,bringing together commercial, off-the-shelf and bespokeequipment.

In the past ten years alone, most military devices havebecome smaller and more portable for soldiers in the field. Whilethese technologies include improved and effectivecommunication network devices, accurate navigation systemsand helmets fitted with real-time positioning, it’s expected that

body armours made of more advanced and smart materials willalso begin to populate ground warfare.

More recently, there has been a significant shift in the batterychemistry powering military equipment. Around the turn of thecentury, nickel metal hybrid and lead acid chemistries were theindustry standard for portable batteries. In the past decade, thishas shifted to lithium chemistries becoming the new norm acrossmilitary devices — specifically our lithium manganese dioxide(LiMnO2) chemistry, which is currently proving popular forhandheld military electronics.

With shrinking devices and changing power supplies havingalready reshaped the sector over the past ten years andspending steadily increasing, what could a soldier look like in adecade’s time? To determine this, we need look no further than

the technology being developed for the special forces.

Mission-critical systemsWhether its satellites or submarines, special forces require amultitude of systems to accomplish their missions and so, often,this is the group that typically leads the sector in terms oftechnological advancement. Some of the more interestingdevelopments have been in the field of flexible solar and portablewind generation.

It’s a fact that the weight of a typical infantry backpack hasincreased drastically since WWII and this is largely due to theincreased use of technology in the field. Currently, the numerousportable communications devices soldiers use during operationsrequire them to carry an abundance of primary batteries. Asdevices have become smaller, the aim of many soldiermodernisation programmes has been to minimise the overallweight of items carried by soldiers.

While military battery manufacturers such as UltralifeCorporation have responded to this by developing high-density,lightweight batteries, it will always be the case that twolightweight secondary batteries weigh less than six lightweightprimaries. As such, flexible solar power generation provides anon-the-go charging solution for soldiers, allowing them to carryfewer batteries but recharge them easily.

This will mark a shift for the industry. While we currentlysupply both primary, non-rechargeable and secondary,rechargeable batteries to government and defence applications,the development of flexible solar technology would see much ofthe industry move to secondary batteries.

A solar power militaryBy 2028, it’s likely that portable solar generation technology willhave become cost-effective for device manufacturers and,subsequently, become a staple of military technology. This willallow soldiers to reliably power equipment in the field duringlong operations, which will become critical as more equipmentbecomes portable or wearable. GMC

For the military, interconnected and portable devices aremost desirable for soldiers on covert operations, but there hasbeen a growing trend of wearable technologies for wider militaryuse. This is because wearable technologies enable soldiers tobe tracked with greater accuracy, making it easier to monitorthe safety of soldiers and reduce the risk of errors.

At Ultralife, we’re already developing technology to help thisbecome a reality. For example, our UBBL35 lightweightconformal military battery is designed to fit closely to the bodyof a soldier, which means it is much easier for the soldier tomove around on the battlefield, particularly when crawling orcrouching, than it would be if they are using existing batteriesformats.

Designed specifically to overcome harsh militaryenvironments, the battery can be used as a central power supplythat distributes power to the multiple devices a soldier may becarrying. We’ve also developed a solar military battery chargerfor it. This allows soldiers to charge their battery using adeployable 57-watt solar panel while in the field.

To ensure range, Ultralife also ensures that every batterydesign features a long operating life and no voltage delay, sothat the device springs into action when required, even if it’sbeen inactive for some time.

Driving next-generation technologiesThe increased viability of Internet of Things (IoT) technologiesis the biggest driver for next-generation military devices andapplications like wearable technologies. As these technologiescontinue to advance, OEMs need to consider the power sourceof their device to ensure it is combat-ready, especially as failureto deliver reliable equipment – depending on the mission at hand– could risk a soldier’s life.

With military spend on an upwards curve and each countryconstantly striving to have the most advanced devices to protect theirown interests, the next ten years will be fruitful for defence technology.As we develop the technology to make soldiers more agile, now is atime of unmatched potential for military devices.

GMC: Rockwell Collins is one of the industry’s stalwarts in deliveringmission critical solutions, with more than a century of experience. What’syour assessment of the company’s expertise today?Troy Brunk: Rockwell Collins has a long history of delivering robustcommunications systems to solve our customer’s problems. This includesdelivering the first messages from the Moon and fielding the most widely-installedmilitary airborne radio in the world. While our focus on building trust with ourcustomers hasn’t changed, the threats that many of our military customers areconcerned about today have changed. The ability to communicate securely, in acontested environment, presents challenges that we are helping our customerssolve. Our expertise in software-defined radios, modern cryptologic systems,advanced networking communication protocols between ground and air assets,and waveform development allows us to create solutions that solve our customershardest and most worrisome problems. Our deep understanding of moderncommunications and the incredible engineering talent and experience we have,gives us tremendous ability to create solutions that ensure our customers cancommunicate securely in challenging environments.

GMC: What services and solutions does Rockwell Collins provide to themilitary and government sectors, and how are these complemented by itscommercial arm?Troy Brunk: We have more than 45,000 radios flying on 180 different airborneplatforms in more than 40 countries around the world. These include V/UHF, HF,and Advanced Tactical DataLinks, such as the Multi-functional InformationDistribution System - Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS-JTRS). All of thesesolutions benefit from our expertise in both commercial and military aviationsystem integration. When we build a radio for the airborne market, either militaryor commercial, we approach the design of that radio with a thoroughunderstanding of what it takes to integrate a radio into an airborne platform. Thatbackground allows us to make design choices which simplify the integration ofthe radio and that ensures it will meet the stringent operating requirements of anairborne platform.

What many may not know, however, is that we are also very involved in the

ground radio market. Our AN/PRC-162 radio is one of the tworadios being procured by the US Army as part of the Handheld,Manpack, and Small Form Fit Manpack Radio Program. ThePRC-162 gives the US Army a multi-channel, software-definedradio, with a modernized crypto system that will allow them touse a wide range of advanced waveforms and to interoperatewith both legacy and future radios.

Similarly, we are also deeply involved in the position,navigation, and timing (PNT) solution market. Our AN/PSN-13Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR) is the US military’sstandard issue secure GPS receiver with over 500,000 receiverscurrently fielded. The same Selective Availability Anti-SpoofingModule (SAASM) technology used in the DAGR is incorporatedin to a wide range of other precision GPS products we produceincluding both aircraft and weapon guidance systems. We arealso on the forefront of the next generation of secure PNTsolutions as well with the work we’re doing on the developmentand fielding of M-Code based capabilities and the developmentof high assurance PNT solutions for GPS denied environments.

GMC: Rockwell Collins has just released its new FasTAKtargeting system, designed to replace the FireStormsolution. What can you tell us about the new product, andimprovements over the older model? What benefits will itdeliver in the field?Troy Brunk: The FasTAK solution is a paradigm shift from theolder Firestorm product line. We designed the FasTAK systemas a refinement to our FireStorm tactical combat targetingsystem with a focus on reducing the overall weight and takingadvantage of the additional computing devices and operatingplatforms that are now available.

It leverages the work we’ve done over many years to developa suite of message translation software that allows users tosend messages over one network in one format to a differentnetwork that uses a completely different message format. Theusers don’t have to worry about translating messages dependingon who needs to receiver the data, the system software doesthat for them. FasTAK simplifies this complex set of tasks forusers, helping them carry out missions more efficiently whileremaining agile. From units on the move to command and control,the system provides reliable, secure connectivity across thebattlefield.

GMC: As the battlefield becomes increasingly multi-domain,what are the biggest challenges today faced by defenceforces, and how might they be met?Troy Brunk: One of the biggest challenges is that increasinglyall of the military’s networks have to function together to ensurecritical information needed by the warfighters flows seamlesslybetween different networks. This means that dissimilar, smallscale tactical networks running on handheld radios, larger mid-

tier networks running on vehicle-based radios, airborne networksrunning on UAS, rotary wing and fixed wing platforms andbeyond line of sight (BLOS) must all connect and share dataseamlessly with one another. This needs to be accomplished inan architecture where there are multiple levels of security, amultitude of waveforms being used, a variety of data pipes andin a contested environment where our adversaries are trying tocontrol our use of the spectrum. That’s a tremendous problemto solve. No single government program or company alone cansolve that problem by themselves. The only solution is throughgreater cooperation and closer coordination betweengovernment offices and defense communication solutionproviders. Establishing coordination measures and advisorygroups that ensure things like the development andimplementation of waveforms and the roadmaps for newcapabilities are clearly understood by all participants are key tosolving this multifaceted problem.

GMC: Cybersecurity has become a major challenge in thebattlefield today. What’s your assessment of the currentthreat landscape with regards to data security?Troy Brunk: Unfortunately, that’s the world we live in today. Wesee every day that there are increasingly dangerous cyberthreats facing our warfighters. In the face of this threat, we alsosee a desire to leverage more and more commercialcommunication technology to solve warfighter problems. I dobelieve we should take advantage of developments in thecommercial communications market, such as new waveformtechnology, spectrum utilization, directional antenna technology,beam-forming technology, but we should evaluate and implementthese new technologies in a thoughtful way. The security of theinformation moving across military networks is paramount, soevery time a non-secure commercial device in a military networkbecause it’s ‘good enough,’ lives of our warfighters are at risk.

A good example is the need for a training system that allowsfighter pilots to train with each other without the information theyneed being compromised. Our adversaries know where all ourtraining ranges are and they target those ranges for collectionof information about our tactics, techniques and procedures.Most of those ranges are on or near a coastline, off of which anenemy can sail a signals intelligence ship. Without a robust,multi-level security solution to safeguard the information flowingfrom an F-35 fighter to the ground station, or to another fighterthey are operating for or against in the training mission, thatinformation is at risk.

That particular problem is one that Rockwell Collins hasdeveloped a solution for on the US Navy’s Tactical CombatTraining System Increment II (TCTS II) program. Our solutionwill provide a means for F-35’s to communicate securely withany other live, virtual or constructive participants, simultaneouslyat different levels of security.

Unlike Uber or Google’s Waymo, the self-driving technologydeveloped by the military won’t only be designed for America’sroadways, but for conflict zones all over the world. The militaryis primarily concerned with developing robust and reliable tacticalvehicles to withstand these terrains, while removing people fromunnecessarily risky situations.

In 2013 alone, 60 percent of US combat causalities wererelated to convoy resupply, according to Pentagon figures.Therefore, the introduction of autonomous vehicles to movesupplies could reduce this alarming statistic by removingpersonnel from high risk situations.

Positively, last year saw the joint US-UK Coalition AssuredAutonomous Resupply (CAAR) demonstration in Michigan. Thisground-breaking line-haul convoy involved a truck leading twofollower trucks, using integrated on-board robotics to makeautonomous decisions regarding speed and steering. It provedrevolutionary and demonstrated the potential of taking humansout of the equation in supply delivery.

Utilising LIDARBuilding on current autonomous driving technology is animportant priority for the military at present, and rightly so. Whileretrofitting vehicles with commercial technology has been awelcomed option, some engineers are now looking at newsensor technology, such as LIDAR. This unique system usespulsed lasers to measure the distance between objects, resultingin successful navigation without human guidance.

Combating autonomous vehicledesignThe US Army aims to have its first Robotic Combat Vehicles Technology demonstrator ready by 2021, but the manufactureof these autonomous military vehicles will bring about a unique set of challenges. Here, Nick Jordan, Technical EngineeringManager at military steering system specialist Pailton Engineering, discusses the issues related to autonomous design.

The laser scanner provides a 360-degree view of what’shappening around the vehicle. The creators of LIDAR claim itsproduct is capable of identifying far away objects regardless oftheir size, be it a piece of paper, butterfly or tire debris and takethe necessary action.

intelligence that commercial autonomous vehicle technologymay fall short on.

Bespoke systemsIt goes without saying that the current considerations for human-driven military vehicles will also need to be brought into thenew paradigm of combat vehicles. Just because they areautonomous, does not mean they require less engineering thana regular vehicle. This is particularly important considering thisindustry is more likely to see a transition to semi-autonomousvehicles, before a move to fully autonomous versions.

Military vehicles are like no others. The adverse weatherconditions faced by these vehicles, such as black ice,sandstorms and extreme dust can put even the best militaryvehicles to the test. Without a well-designed steering system,suspension system and chassis, you cannot leverage the newautonomous driving technology. Take the steering system asan example. If the parts used aren’t bespoke to the vehicle andthe conditions it will face, it will be severely limited in action,even with the most intelligent insight on far ahead objects.

What does help is the rigorous physical and environmentaltesting taking place in the steering industry. This validationmeans steering components can take on the moisture, debrisand temperature fluctuation that is faced in real life conditions,without resulting in water ingression to vital components, or hightorque steering.

Once the bespoke steering is in place, the vehicle standsthe best possible chance in taking on extreme conditions andrough terrain. Combined with autonomous driving technology,this holds huge opportunities for the US and UK military industryto develop the most reliable and capable autonomous militaryvehicles in the world.

Falling costsAs autonomous vehicles become the norm, the widespread useof the technology in the commercial sector will drive such useand acceptance in the military sector. The costs of sensors andsoftware in the general robotics industry have already beendriven downwards by the combination of economies, furthermotivating their use.

It certainly looks promising for 2021, as we anticipate the firstlook of the Robotic Combat Vehicles Technology demonstrator.

Meeting mission-criticalneeds with unmannedground vehicles

GMC: Roboteam was established in 2009 to support the modern warfighterin the battlefield. What has the company achieved since its founding?Shahar Abuhazira: Roboteam’s products are in operational use in more than 30countries around the world – supporting military and law enforcement forces andsaving life. We’ve managed to finish the development of eight different systemsand delivered more than 1,000 systems to customers – mainly for the USGovernment. Today, we are a global organization with a wide product line, strongproduction capabilities, and customer support, and are already working on thenext generation of ground robotics.

GMC: What can you tell us about your products and their applications acrossthe globe?Shahar Abuhazira: From day one, we have focused on creating innovativesolutions that provide the war fighter with more confidence in the use of groundrobots. We knew that this confidence would ultimately lead to others using thistechnology – not only EOD and Combat Engineers. Today, we see the use of oursystems for EOD missions but also for information, surveillance andreconnaissance (ISR), Chemical, biological, radiological and nucleardefence (CBRN) and subterranean (subT) missions.

There are three main things we are focused on in the development of oursystems:

1) Simplicity of operation – It’s very simple to control, operate and maintain oursystems.

2) Upgradability – We are changing and modifying our systems very often basedon user needs.

3) Affordability – We are offering more capabilities in affordable prices to includelong term warranty agreements to our customers (included in the price of thesystems).

GMC: Last time we spoke, Roboteam was gearing up tolaunch a new platform and to release two new products tomarket. What can you tell us about these developments andtheir roll-out?Shahar Abuhazira: In October of 2017, we released the TIGR– our mid-size unmanned robotics platform. As the most capableplatform today, the TIGR includes advanced mobility,manipulation and vision capabilities. It’s a state of the art systemthat we have already received first orders for (we will startdelivery by September 2018). In addition, we have also releasedthe AI-CU (IQ) – our new GUI for all our platforms. The AI-CUprovide easier control on any system to include autonomyfeatures.

Last month we released the RSTR – the first ever flying UGV!It’s a combination between a drone we developed that can liftand drop our mini UGV – the IRIS (available at https://bit.ly/2lCGwmm).

GMC: Cybersecurity has become a pressing issue both onthe battlefield and off it. How big a challenge is cybersecurityfor Roboteam, and how does the company keep its productssecure?Shahar Abuhazira: It’s a challenge across the entire military,and as UGVs continue to be used in a broader variety ofmissions, we can expect UGVs to be exposed to morecybersecurity threats.

We are working on making the use of the UGVs safe from acyber perspective by selecting the best radio suppliers andfollowing the US DOD cybersecurity regulations. We made thedecision not to develop these capabilities in-house and to usethe best available solutions in the market.

GMC: Improving situational awareness is of the utmostimportant to battlefield operations. How does Roboteamhelp enhance situational awareness, and how is thatinformation integrated with that of other sources?Shahar Abuhazira: That’s a great point and I agree it’s critical.The first thing we did – with a lot of software work – was tocreate all types of integrated tools and indicators in the GUI to

allow the operator to better understand the environment andthe situation. This includes using image-processing capabilitiesto identify obstacles and semi autonomous applications to allowthe vehicle to overcome those obstacles. For example, oursystems can identify when the system rolls over, provide theoperator the information that it happened, and the ability to flipit back over.

We are also using more advanced sensors that go beyondjust cameras. The ‘Top Layer’ is our mapping device, whichprovides real time 2D/3D mapping, self-navigation, obstacleavoidance and way point navigation.

We also know how to take all the data from the UGV and toshare it with other devices such as other UGVs or any otherunmanned system using our mesh radio system. Take the RSTR,for example - A single operator can receive real-time vision andaudio from the air with the drone, while also on the ground insideof a building with the IRIS. This provides users with a perfectunderstanding of the situation.

GMC: How big a role do you believe semi-autonomoustactical robots will play in the battlefields of the future?Shahar Abuhazira: They will have huge role. Currently, thereare too many soldiers losing their lives in logistics missions.Unmanned systems can save more lives, but we need to makethe operation faster and easier. This can be achieved by providingsystems that can do more independently while keeping theoperator in the loop for decision-making, but not granting themcontrol of the machine. In the near future, I envision robots thatcarry logistics, scan tunnels, search for IEDs, and more withminimal operator interference.

GMC: What are your expectations for Roboteam for the nextyear?Shahar Abuhazira: Our first priority is to keep supporting ourcurrent customers. We have numerous systems supporting thewar fighters in their missions and we will do everything we canto assure operational readiness of our systems. In addition, weare working on moving the RSTR to production and we are aboutto release a new system – the LIGR.

Rowan Gilmore, CEO EM Solutions, explores the conceptof resilience in the satellite communications environment,and how terminals are evolving to meet this and the otherrequirements of mobility, tracking, and high throughput atthe same time.

Resilience and redundancy in mobilesatellite communications

Mobile communications is a mission critical requirement forall military forces, and satellite communications is an essentialpart of the mix, whether at sea, in the air, or in remote landareas. Defence forces everywhere are re-examining theirtraditional satcom operating models as they are not immune tothe demand for high data rates observed in civilian markets,and satellite operators are responding to this by launching newhigh throughput satellites (HTS). Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellitesand small satellites will definitely be a part of the future mix,and since they migrate across the sky, cost effective terminalswith tracking capability, similar to today’s on-the-move terminals,will be required to communicate. Resilience and redundancyare becoming called for with almost as much urgency as higherdata rates.

Achieving communications resilienceAssured communications are like an onion with numerousprotective layers in its skin. Those layers include maximisinglink availability through good design, use of redundancy,

frequency stealth, coding, limiting radio emissions in unwanteddirections, and protecting against interferers. These areparticularly difficult to achieve with satellite communicationswhile on the move, but often it is while on the ‘run’ thatcommunications are most critical.

Consider each layer in turn from the perspective of groundequipment. Firstly, improving link availability by maximising thelink budget is a good place to start. The link budget determinesthe allowable fade margin, which can be maximised by usingthe highest power transmitters possible, most sensitive receivers,steered antennas to maintain maximum antenna gain, and bestpointing accuracy to minimise pointing loss. Time on satellite isprobably the biggest contributor to the availability equation:Minimising the time for an on-the-move terminal to acquire orreacquire the satellite is crucial, as is maintaining the link underviolent motion conditions.

Second, redundancy can be improved in satellitecommunications by the use of multiple transmitters since BlockUp Converters (BUCs) are usually the most failure-pronecomponent in the ground segment; and using multiple satellitesystems. Frequency stealth might entail switching or spreadingeither the modem output frequency or the RF frequency.Changing to a lower frequency band can also protect againstweather effects that can cause loss of the satellite link at thehigher Ka-band frequencies.

encryption at the data layer can protect against theft of data,while fourth, ensuring the radio signal is highly directional withminimal RF spill over or sidelobes, and protecting againstinterfering signals through careful electromagnetic design andanalysis, will avoid ‘theft’ of signals or intrusion upon the radiolayer. Such signals can also be unintentional or non-hostile butstill cause link failure – for example, radar systems nearby thesatcom ground equipment often result in total loss ofcommunications capability.

Mitigating by terminal design against the effects of weather,satellite congestion, frequency jamming, and motion itself alladd towards the objective of resilient communications.

Maximising the data rate given the constraints of a satellitesystemConsider first the ground terminal design. Shannon’s famousequation gives the maximum capacity C of a generalcommunications channel in bits per second as

where B is the allocated transponder bandwidth in Hz, andSNR is the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio at the receiver. Of course,B also determines the receiver noise, so SNR varies inverselyproportional to B, thus maximum capacity does not alwaysincrease linearly with bandwidth. However, for the typical valuesof SNR achieved at a satellite ground terminal with ageostationary satellite (1 < SNR < 20), Shannon’s equationstell us that if the signal power drops by half, the bandwidth needsto double to maintain roughly the same capacity C.

Any reduction in link gain impacts in a similar way. Thesimplest expression for the link equation for a one-way satellitelink (in dBW) is

PR (dBW) = EIRP + GR – Lo

where PR is the received power, GR is the receive endantenna gain, EIRP is the Equivalent Isotropically RadiatedPower (equal to GTPT ) of the transmitter in dBW, and Lo theone-way channel and spreading loss. For a geostationarysatellite, the spreading loss component of Lo is over 200dB atfrequencies above X-band. Therefore, PR normally ends up quiteclose to the receiver noise floor so any increase in Lo (forinstance, through poor pointing or rain attenuation) or anyreduction in terminal GR (or GT i.e. EIRP if transmitting) cancause the received signal power to drop below threshold, andthe link will be lost or at best, severely degraded. GR isdetermined by the size of the antenna and, in the case of flatpanel antennas, the angle of incidence as well, losing 3dB at45o orientation from normal. As Shannon’s equation highlights,such a drop of 3dB in PR (the ‘S’ in S/N) either causes the bitrate to halve (eventually forcing it to zero) or requires thebandwidth (and cost) to double to maintain the same capacity.That is a critical point to remember: If the system gain drops byhalf (for instance, with the flat antenna), or a cloud passes over,or the terminal is backed off by 3dB to prevent interference withan adjacent satellite (e.g. when a plane with the airborne terminalbanks), then either the data rate halves or the bandwidth (cost)must double to restore the system.

The added challenge of mobility or tracking a LEO satelliteTherefore, both the gain and pointing performance of a satcomantenna system are important in preserving link availability. Witha mobile terminal that must point to a geostationary satellite, oralternatively a fixed terminal that must track a moving satellitesuch as a LEO, the tracking error measures the terminal’s abilityto keep the antenna boresight pointed directly to the satellite

during operation. However, performance requires more than that– it must include the time taken to initially acquire the satellite.

For SOTM applications, these requirements are challengingdue to the complex engineering required to steer the antenna’stransmit beam directly to the satellite with high availability duringplatform motion. Only monopulse technology is able to maintainlock on the satellite without deliberately introducing an intentionalmis-pointing error off boresight to search for the exact beammaximum, even after the satellite has been ‘acquired.’ Monopulsetechnology is a closed-loop system that measures the relativesignal level in a higher order mode intentionally generated inthe antenna feed, typically the TE21 mode. The system usesthat mode’s sharp null along boresight to derive a very accuratecorrective pointing vector to force the antenna back in line,without the need to introduce any deliberate pointing loss todetermine whether the antenna is aligned for maximum receiverpower, as happens with conical or step scan systems. Since amonopulse system directly measures the TE21 signal which isproportional to the deviation off-axis, such a technology alsohas the benefit of being able to accurately monitor and reportthe instantaneous pointing error to the user. This ensures theBUC is only muted when the antenna is confirmed as being off-axis, rather than, for instance, if the received beam is measuredas temporarily weak, for instance due to a passing cloud.

RedundancyHowever, there is still more that can be done to assure satellitecommunications. Redundancy in hardware, frequency andsatellite selection are three other ways to introduce resilienceinto the link. The choice of satellites and use of multiple bandscan mitigate against weather effects, jammers, interferers,congestion, and even loss of a satellite.

The approach taken at EM Solutions is to engineer a satelliteterminal that automatically switches between any of three

satellite bands on different satellites, even while on-the-move.Although maritime terminals already exist with either commercialor military Ka-band capability, or with dual X-band and militaryKa-band capability, none offer universal on-the-move capability(on land or sea) in a convenient size package, simultaneouslyoperating in both X- and Ka-bands, or with fall back tocommercial Ka-band (such as with Inmarsat GX) on demand.This requires the use of separate BUCs for X-band and Ka-band, but this is beneficial since the pair then adds increasedhardware redundancy on top of the improved link redundancy.Such a combination brings the benefits of assuredcommunications whenever a satellite is visible without manualchangeover of hardware.

Assured communicationsIn developing its assured satellite communications on-the-moveterminals, EM Solutions has worked closely with its defencecustomer, represented by the Australian Defence Science andTechnology Group (DSTG) to understand their requirements,and cooperate with several collaboration partners.

In 2017, EM Solutions completed the installation of its dualKa-band Cobra terminals onto the Australian Border Force CapeClass fleet (Figure 1). The company’s partnerships with Inmarsatand Intellian proved productive, enabling it to certify its terminalson the Inmarsat GX network as a fall back to operation on theWGS system. EM Solutions subsequently completed installationof its leading-edge tri-band Cobra terminal (Figure 2) —whichsimultaneously operates in both X and Ka-bands - for the RoyalAustralian Navy, and followed this with repeat orders for othernaval vessels. The greatest innovation in that latest Cobra X/Ka-multiband terminal is its antenna feed system. Optimised forits electromagnetics, the system generates antenna pointingvectors from both the X and Ka-band beacons of the WGSsatellite, and communicates in the traditional manner at Ka-band,all the time supporting simultaneous communications on thesatellite’s X-band transponder, whenever required to protectagainst rain fade or to provide added capacity. In addition, thesystem can then fall back to tracking and operating on thealternative Inmarsat GX satellite system in the case ofcongestion or for operational reasons. This helps to providenetwork survivability with assured communications in acontested environment, and rapid and automatic self-healing inthe event of rain fade or other link outage by switching satellitesor frequency band.

Meanwhile, the company has continued to roll out its land-mobile terminal, the Taipan (Figure 3), to a major European army(in X-band) and its new amphibious Salamander variant (Figure4) for an army in Asia. By aspiring to the level of assuredcommunications, EM Solutions continues to cement its positionas a company known for products unmatched in reliability androbustness. These two terminals can be configured for a rangeof platforms to suit either a small or medium vehicle or vessel,with simplified field repair and cost optimisation, and provideuniversal stabilisation under the most severe motion conditions,since the terminals can be used either on land or at sea.

Flattening the antennaOver the past three years, the design of flat panel satcomantennas has become one of the most attractive R&D topics inindustry and the research community. Although the concept ofgenerating a focused-beam through a planar-shaped antennais not new, it is still extremely challenging to design a feasibleflat antenna solution that meets the RF constraints, matchesthe market needs, and is commercially profitable. A number ofrevolutionary antenna concepts and prototypes have beenshowcased by worldwide innovators (such as Kymeta, Phasor,and Isotropic), but questions remain unanswered about whatcompromises have been made to meet all the essential antennapattern and RF parameters for reasonable performance at Ka-band, while maintaining reasonable cost. After all, the physicsembodied in Shannon’s equation and the link budget cannot be

overcome by magic press releases.EM Solutions research collaboration with the University of

Queensland has continued since 2016, and during that timethe company has patented an innovative approach for a novelreconfigurable flat panel antenna. While that terminal cannotimprove the boundaries imposed by the physics above, theterminal that is being built around it will meet satellitecommunications antenna pattern specifications, track using EMSolutions’ accurate monopulse technology, and be low cost. EMSolutions hope to report on success with its first demonstrationterminal in 2019.

Ultimately, there is no ‘best’ answer for antenna choice. Touse a racing analogy, it is ‘horses for courses!’ Parabolicantennas offer the advantages of constant and high gain, andcertified compliant antenna patterns over broad bandwidths. Flatpanel antennas compromise two or all three of these advantagesin favour of low profile. The optimum choice depends on theapplication, link budget, and the value placed on size, weight,and power.

ConclusionAchieving resilience and redundancy in mobile satellitecommunications can only partially be achieved through goodterminal design. All links in the network chain can contribute,but ultimately there are trade-offs. For instance, the highsilhouette of parabolically steered terminals is universally dislikedby land forces – that is, until the alternatives that offer lower orvariable gain, must be muted to avoid interference, do not track,or do not meet antenna patterns, are tested. EM Solutions hastaken a variety of approaches to offer robust terminals that offerredundancy in design, exceptional tracking and mobility inmultiple frequency bands, fall back to commercial satellites, andsoon, flat profile. All of these help to strengthen the resiliencyand assuredness of military communications. GMC

Chemring Technology Solutions completes successfulexercise for second year at US Military’s Cyber QuestChemring Technology Solutions (CTS) has completed thesuccessful demonstration of VIPER, the world’s first ElectronicWarfare (EW) manpack geo-fencing capability, at this year’sCyber Quest. CTS’s participation in the US military’s Cyber Questexercises followed a competitive down-select after it attendedthe event for the first time last year.

Led by the US Army’s Cyber Center of Excellence, CyberQuest is a sequence of advanced technology experiments usingEW war gaming. The month long exercises saw operational unitsparticipate in a series of experiments to evaluate multiple-vendorsystems, and the results will be briefed to coalition partners.The current and future need for EW capability was particularlyhighlighted by the US Army Cyber Center of Excellence at FortGordon.

CTS demonstrated VIPER, its new whole-mission supportand information system. When integrated into the RESOLVEEW system, VIPER delivers actionable intelligence and providesoperators with pinpoint accuracy for superior target precision,significantly reducing the task, time and reporting burden.

Cyber Quest also successfully experimented with LOCATE-T, the CTS wideband High Frequency Direction Finding (HFDF) tactical system, which is fully-transportable and providesan essential complement to existing static HF sites.

Chesapeake Technology International (CTI) once againprovided the core architecture and primary Cyber/Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA) operator’s display for theCyber Quest experiments. Both LOCATE-T and RESOLVE wereinterfaced with CTI’s Thunderstorm architecture to help definethe common operational picture using the CTI Caper plug-in forRaptorX during the exercises at Fort Gordon.

Ben Vogel, Regional Manager for North and South America,at Chemring Technology Solutions, said: “Cyber Quest supportsthe evolution of EW systems for US and other militariesworldwide, and provided us with the ideal platform todemonstrate how VIPER delivers a new level of EW capability.VIPER was developed by EW operators for EW operators andthe Cyber Quest trials allowed us to engage with end users toshow them how we have created the most capable and user-friendly EW manpack system. VIPER’s deployment at CyberQuest has shown how it offers the next step to counter currentand evolving threats.”
