Increase jobs and investment in Miami-Dade County.

Miami is a world-class global 21st century community.

Vision

Mission

As a community, Miami-Dade is always pushing itself to do more, to be better. There’s an appreciation for hard work and opportunity that drives young entrepreneurs and established business leaders alike. It’s what not only helps us develop world-class talent but positions us to attract highly educated professionals from around the world.

We pushed ourselves this year as well, completing 54 projects that drove more than $820 Million in new capital investment and almost 2,200 direct jobs. In addition, our target industries continue to demonstrate the kind of double-digit growth that will continue to propel us forward.

- Michael A. Finney, President & CEO, Miami-Dade Beacon Council

The past year has brought growing prosperity to Miami-Dade County, thanks to the committed work of The Beacon Council. The ‘Advantage Miami’ Campaign continues to deliver jobs and record-breaking investments in our community. This targeted initiative added almost 2 million square feet of new construction involving 54 projects. I’m very pleased that 58 percent of the direct jobs from these projects are in Urban Priority Areas. Congratulations to The Beacon Council for continuing to help attract and grow innovative businesses, particularly in the technology sector.

Looking back over the past year and looking ahead to 2020, I am proud of and excited by Miami-Dade’s unique position as a vibrant and global business community. Our economy is strong, and there is tremendous investment in jobs, construction, innovation and in talent.

As Beacon Council Chair this last year, it has been an honor to work with and collaborate with business, community and education leaders who share a passion and commitment to drive our growth and future. We are the envy of the world, for many more reasons than just our spectacular weather.

To foster increased communication beyond just the leadership of the three economic development organizations our respective Executive Committees had a joint meeting in West Palm Beach.

Doing Business With The MilitaryMDBC’s ongoing partnership with SOUTHCOM presented an ideal opportunity for The Beacon Council to host a welcome reception for Admiral Craig S. Faller, Commander, U.S. Southern Command. Committed to building stronger ties with Miami-Dade’s business community, Admiral Faller was joined by Beacon Council Board Members, Investors and other guests eager to establish connections.

From paid social to partnerships, innovative storytelling to stories about innovation, one thing is certain: the buzz about Miami’s advantages as a global business destination is strong. FY2018-2019 saw The Beacon Council more actively begin to integrate the GMCVB’s signature MIAMI logo into key creative executions, building even stronger connectivity between marketing efforts.

New Leaders Task Force (NLT)Urban Initiatives Task Force (UITF)Tapping the next generation of leaders is essential to the development of our community. Miami’s lucky to have a deep bench of talented professionals that are committed to its development as well as to their own.

From their Lunch with Leaders series to skills development workshops and videos telling their Why Miami stories, this group shines a light on what’s next for Miami.

Created to help drive greater participation of Miami-Dade residents of Black/African-American descent in our community’s economic prosperity, the Urban Initiative Task Force (UITF) unites business and community leaders committed to fostering increased dialogue and inclusive strategies across industries.

NLT Lunch with Leaders: Jaret Davis, Greenberg Traurig

In the past year, UITF has worked closely with local minority-owned businesses including The Copper Door B&B and First Prevention Dialysis to foster connections with partners like Uber, United Healthcare and Florida Blue that can help them grow to the next level. A quarterly marketing sub-committee working closely with MDBC’s marketing team drove increased messaging into the community, and the inclusion of additional outlets via the Black-Owned Media Alliance.

launching the pilot in January 2019, MCV has successfully placed 65 community members with jobs earning an average hourly wage of $16.37.

The initiative draws support from more than 40 community partners and 34+ employers. Program was recently allocated $1 Million by Miami-Dade County’s Community Disparities Subcommittee; this builds on generous support from sponsors including CareerSource South Florida, Florida Blue Foundation, Allegany Franciscan Ministries, BankUnited and SunTrust Foundation.

Miami Community Ventures (MCV) was created with the sole focus of connecting low-income and unemployed individuals with living wage ($13.44+/hr.) jobs, thereby reducing unemployment, poverty, crime and recidivism, while increasing job retention and generating a positive ROI.

• Target Communities: Liberty City, Overtown, Goulds and other underserved areas

• Jobs Made Available: 110• Average Wage: $16.37• Jobs include Customer Service, Drivers,

A collaborative platform that promotes community-wide economic development success and prosperity, One Community One Goal (OCOG) provides a successful roadmap for Miami-Dade County’s economic development and growth. Convening leadership across target industries, local government, and key institutions both public and private, OCOG fosters ongoing strategic dialogue around the primary issues our community needs to address in order to continue to grow. This happens in smaller groups like the Academic Leaders Council, in large open forums like the quarterly Access Breakfasts, and among tomorrow’s talent – our students – via in-school programming like Career Connections.

Thank you to the Founders and Past Chairs of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council. As we head into our 35th year in 2020, we are especially grateful to the visionary men and women who have championed Miami-Dade as the global business destination we know it to be.

Miami-Dade has been blessed with many passionate leaders that have dedicated much of their lives to building this community. In 2019, we mourn the loss of three individuals that left their mark on Miami-Dade County and The Beacon Council. We thank them for their tireless commitment to the growth of this diverse, dynamic community, and celebrate their legacies.
