Introduction: Particulate contaminants such as dust, pollen, mold and bacteria are removed from air by using air
filters. Air filters have major applications in ventilation and air conditioning systems, gas turbine air intake,
heating, cleanrooms, locomotive air filtration for cabin and engine air intake and others. These filters are
manufactured to comply with industry guidelines regarding elimination of air contaminants.
Mechanism: Air filters remove contaminants from air by trapping particulates as soon as they come in contact
with the surface of the fiber media and adhere to it. The mechanism of removing impurities could be either
electrostatic, mechanical or a combination of the two. The mechanism followed by particles to come in contact with
the filter media are as follows:

• Electrostatic attraction

Air flows through the filter media from upstream side and clean air exits downstream side. Moreover, the extent of
air purification depends upon efficiency of air filters viz-a-viz particle size.
