Introduction

•Global Agricultural Research Systems •There are sixteen international institutes concerned with improving the agricultural production.• Ten of these institutes are directly or indirectly involved in crop improvement work; these institutes supplement the national crop improvement efforts. •The main objective of these institutes is to increase agricultural production of tropical countries through applied research coupled with extension and educational activities. •The functioning of these institutes is supported and supervised by the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research

(CGIAR).

Functions of the International Institutes

1.Genetic improvement of the crops concerned to develop high

yielding and disease resistant lines better suited to the various

environments.

2. Collection and conservation of germplasm of the concerned crops

and their relatives.

3. To conduct research on farming systems for an efficient use of the

available resources.

4. To determine the appropriate technology suitable for the needs

and the resources of the region.

5. Extension activities to popularize the new technology so that

the cultivator is able to adopt them.

The Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research

•The CGIAR was established in 1971 by the joint efforts of Food

and Agriculture .•Organization (FAO), the World Bank and the United Nations

Development Programme (UNDP).

•The CGIAR is financially supported by sponsors, governments,

development banks, foundations and some other sources.

At present it financially supports and supervises all the 16 institutes.

FAO & Extension

•Delegates at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Conference of Ministers of Agriculture for Asia and the Pacific in Japan in 2000 recommended that FAO continue to provide assistance to member countries in the area of agricultural extension. •This call on FAO was indeed opportune as there are many changes confronting the world today that have direct implications and impact on the operations and scope of what constitutes "agricultural extension" in today's context. •As a result, there is an increasing re-examination of the form and strategies being tried and adopted for agricultural extension globally with reforms implemented in many countries, including in the Asia and Pacific region. Of particular concern is that technology transfer and adoption has not met the needs of target beneficiaries - despite the efforts in research and development.

Objectives of the Consultation• The Consultation's objectives requested experts to:

•Review the status and developments in agricultural extension

vis-à-vis the research-extension-farmer-marketing interface in the

Asia and Pacific region.•Identify and examine modalities, strategies and lessons suitable for

application to regional and national circumstances.•Identify gaps in extension and recommend areas for further

attention by countries and by FAO.

The Association for International Agricultural and Extension Education (AIAEE) was established in 1984 at Texas, to provide a professional association for agricultural and extension educators who share the common goal of strengthening agriculture and extension.

The specific objectives of AIAEE are to:

•Articulate the role of agricultural and Extension education in international agricultural development.

•Develop state-of-the-art papers on agricultural and Extension education worldwide.

•Establish a continuing dialogue within the profession in international agricultural and Extension education on a global scale.

•Establish and maintain a continuing dialogue between AIAEE and donor agencies for international agricultural development.

•Establish a roster of professionals in agricultural and Extension education who can provide the expertise needed to assist funding agencies in planning and implementing agricultural and Extension education programs and institutions in other nations.

•Improve the skills and knowledge of professionals who want to work in international agricultural and Extension education.
