GRC History• Established in Jan. 23/’41 by National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA)
First 3 such Centers in U.S.- Lewis, Ames & Langley
Earlier name of Cleveland facility - Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory (AERL) under NACA
• Oct. 1/’58 – The 3 NACA Centers became nucleus of NASA
• 1948 - AERL was named George W. Lewis, NACA's Director of Research (1924 to 1947)
• Lewis Research Center (LeRC) - Reputed internationally for research on jet propulsion systems.
• Mar. 1/’99 – LeRC re-named NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to honor Astronaut John Glenn
• Located at 21000 Brookpark Rd., in Cleveland, OH – adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins Airport.

NASA ImpactStartup CompaniesBrand new companies formed to commercialize NASA GRC-developed technology
FABAEARTH, a California-based startup, has licensed several radio frequency
and advanced communications technologies from across the Agency. With
the licensed technology, FABAEARTH will design a network of unmanned,
high-altitude aircraft that will enable the wide-area transmission of
telecommunications services at a very low cost.
Engineer’s Pantheon is a spin-out of Rollins College in Winter Park,
Florida. Students in the MBA program at the college identified GRC’s
Shape Memory Alloy Rock Splitter (SMARS) as a great candidate for
new company formation. The student team, as part of their
coursework, created a business plan to license, develop, and
commercialize SMARS for extracting small veins of precious material
from the earth.
Minus Tau, located in El Paso, Texas, intends to develop concussion
detection and monitoring devices which will include GRC’s Functional
Near Infrared Spectroscopy(fNIRS). The devices would be installed on
helmets with target end-uses primarily athletes, soldiers, and motorists.
