Yes, the day was very sunny to begin with. Unfortunately, the grounds at the park would have been wet and we made a decision to postpone in preference to risking the students sitting on very wet bottoms throughout the day. We needed to make our decision by 7.30am to ensure we did not incur any costs. The new date for the carnival is March 28—Wednesday of next week! On behalf of the school, I express sincere thanks to the organisers at the park and to Busways for their understand- ing, flexibility and cooperation. Re late Arrival at School. This was a topic followed up in last week’s newsletter. When students arrive late to school, the following are the guidelines that the school is implementing if they arrive after 9 but before 11am, they are to go directly to their classroom. Parents should leave stu- dents at the school gate and watch them (if they wish to) proceed to class. The reason for this is that rolls are marked at 9am and then sent to the office at 11am (therefore, late arrivers are marked on the roll when they arrive at the room) after 11am students should report to the office where their arrival at school will be noted in the roll. It is not necessary for parents to take their children to class, as it is not school policy for parents to interrupt prime teaching time to explain their child’s lateness, ask about homework etc. Any parent who is concerned their child is not capable of making it safely to their class, should deliv- er their child to the front office. Please understand that all parents are welcome to communicate with class teachers—you can send a note or you can phone—we do ask that you do not take away from the valuable teaching time by interrupting classes. AssembliesMonday morning assemblies are an outstanding aspect of our school’s operation. It is the one time of the week where all students and teachers meet together with parents who wish to attend. In recent times, I have mentioned the need for parents and their pre-schoolers to act as safe, respectful learners. Sadly, following last week’s assembly there were complaints about the noise from community members. Staff want parents to attend. Students want parents to attend. Students love to have parents there when they receive awards. I once again, ask all parents—for the sake of children— to turn mobiles off, to cease conversation during the assembly and to remove noisy pre- schoolers. School Canteen Concern Our school canteen is currently running at a loss. Last week, a mem- ber of the P&C and two staff members met with the Healthy Schools Canteen Coordinator. We are going to try one or two changes to how the canteen operates, but in the meantime, I would strongly encourage all parents who want to see the canteen stay, to ‘use it or lose it.’ Please read the flyer with this newsletter and if you can, assist us to keep our healthy canteen by supporting it. Bullying Following the findings of a coronial inquiry into the death of a 14yr old child, this topic is once again in the news. Bullying occurs when one person or child attempts to make another person or child act in a certain way or feel a particular way. For it to be bullying it needs to continue over time and it needs to have one person more powerful than the other. Bullying should not be confused with social interaction problems that occur whenever people have an argument. One of the worst forms of bullying is cyber bullying as very hurtful things can be said using the internet or ’posted’ for others to see. One of the key points I wish to make is that the school is here to help. The coroner’s finding in the case of the 14yr old child clearly reinforced the fact that when students become victims of bullying—whether through school or the internet at home—schools have a duty of care to follow the matter up and dependent upon the nature of what is happening to inform the police. These mat- ters are always difficult to resolve but it is vital that at the end of the process, the person who is bul- lied is relieved and ‘free’ to do as they wish whilst the bully is assisted to change their behaviour. Have a good week, Doug Meaney Principal

Dear parents, Athletics Carnival—As everyone is aware, we had to cancel our carnival on Tuesday. Yes, the day was very sunny to begin with.
