A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOUR: Shack It to Me ... in Heaven: A wealthy man died and went to heaven. He

was met at the Pearly Gates by Saint Peter who led him down the streets of gold. They passed mansion after

mansion until they came to the very end of the street. Saint Peter stopped the rich man in front of a little shack.

“This belongs to you,” said Saint Peter. “Why do I get this ugly thing when there are so many mansions I could live

in?” the man demanded. “We did the best we could with the money you sent us!” Saint Peter replied.

“It’s the settee or the jumper,

Harold.”

“I never drink water because of the disgusting things that fish do in it.” W. C. Fields.

OUR CHURCH – OUR PARISH – OUR FUTURE - Shrule Church Community Meeting: A meeting was held last Monday 12th September. Due to the low numbers in

attendance, I informed the group at the beginning of the meeting, there appears no great desire to undertake work on the church at this time. One more meeting will be held to confirm this assessment and to provide an

opportunity for those who may have wished to attend but were unable to do so. Mr. Meany was then invited to make his presentation. He spoke about the

various options for possible grants available for possible work on the church.

Following the presentation of Mr. Meany, there was further discussion on attendance and

moving forward on the project. It was suggested the poor attendance was due to fears and rumours. One was that the meeting was being held to get people to go ‘knocking on doors’

looking for money! The simple answer to that is NOT TRUE. Another rumour or fear is that the purpose of the meeting was to ‘rope people into giving money’ – NOT TRUE. Another

rumour or concern was that such work would imply that a ‘levy would be place on each house or individual’ – NOT TRUE. Another misconception was the meeting was only for

people knowledgeable and interested in building – NOT TRUE. The meeting is for anyone who wished to see work done on the church. The only financial matter would be the introduction of

parish envelopes, which would require volunteers for distribution of the envelopes. It has been a substantial period since work has been carried out in Shrule church, and any

which was done is regrettable for the most part undermined the integrity of the building. As many are aware, over the summer, information regarding the current condition of the church was presented by Mr. Meany and summaries of the reports carried out were in the newsletter

so that people aware of the current condition of the church. Since then, it has been noted the presence of woodworm in the pews, which suggests the timber ceiling of the church may also

be infected. I would like to state that whatever the condition of the building, my guiding principle will be to ‘pay as we go’.

I am acutely aware that despite the welcome recovery in the economy, many people still struggle. I have no intention to burden people in any financial way. I have stated several times

that I believe it is possible to carry out work without the need to go knocking on doors or putting a level on households or go about fundraising. I will not put the parish into debt or

borrow, nor will I leave the parish with empty accounts. I am proposing to do as much work as possible as funds allow and work with what is currently available in the form of grants and tax

rebates. The SOLE OBJECTIVE of the meeting was to establish if there was adequate support and desire to see work started on the church building to ensure it future. I will not

begin the project without demonstrate able support. Currently, based on the attendance of the last meeting, I will not be moving forward with the project. However, since misconceptions, fears and rumours may have created misunderstand, one more meeting will be held on

MONDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER AT 8PM IN SHRULE to church to verify or correct this position.

OUR PARISH – OUR CHURCH – OUR FUTURE: WHAT IS THE ENVELOPE SYSTEM? One aspect that I have mentioned at meetings and in the newsletter is the introduction of the

parish envelope system. This is common method in use in most parishes to record household contributions to charities as required by the Charities Act. Some people may be unfamiliar with this method and there may be confusion with the Meitheal system common in the diocese with

Bishop Casey, where along with the regular church collection, there was a second collection. The envelope system is not second collection. Rather, it is a system used to record the current

contribution of a person or household. How it works is a household is given a box of envelopes which contains envelopes for each Sunday, envelopes for Dues and other scheduled diocesan

collections CURA & Immigrants. While the name of the household appears on the box of envelopes, there is also allotted a number on the envelope. Only the number appears on the

envelope and not the name of the household. This ensures the contribution of the household is kept private from the public and those who count the collection. When the money is been

counted; the envelope is opened and the amount in the envelope is written on the outside. The envelope is set aside. Then, the amount donated is recorded on a parish records where the

number on the envelope to the corresponding person. This envelope system facilitates the contribution of any size donated to a charity such as the Church to be recorded as far as this is

possible. There is however, another reason why the envelope system would be of benefit to the parish. If a household or person make a record contribution €250 a year, it is possible if the

person or household complete a simple form to reclaim the tax back on the amount of the record contribution. And while €250 may seem a large amount, bear in mind, there are 52 Sundays in a year. This means if a household puts €5 into the basket each Sunday, it totals

€260. Add to that then, what a household may contribute in dues, it is an amount that many already are contributing. I am proposing to ask people to commit to signing up for the tax

rebate if they can to take advantage of current contribution they are already making. I would also like to add that if a person receives an envelope, this does not imply they are expected to

donate €250 a year. Rather, bearing in mind the Charities Act, it allows whatever amount the person or household is donating to be recorded. Also the use of envelopes allows those who

may not be regular church goers or even attend church the opportunity to support work carried out on the church. Summary of Glencorrib second meeting in Next Week’s Newsletter.

ROCKING WITH ME. Author unknown:

There was once an elderly, despondent woman in a nursing home. She wouldn't speak to

anyone or request anything. She merely existed - rocking in her creaky old rocking chair. The

old woman didn't have many visitors. But every couple mornings, a concerned and wise young

nurse would go into her room. She didn't try to speak or ask questions of the old lady. She

simply pulled up another rocking chair beside the old woman and rocked with her. Weeks or

months later, the old woman finally spoke. 'Thank you,' she said. 'Thank you for rocking

with me.

A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOUR: The Guardian Angel's Mistake A middle aged woman has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital.

While on the operating table she has a near-death experience. During that experience she sees her guardian angel and asks if this is her time. The angel says no and explains that she has another 30-40 years to

live. Upon her recovery she decides to just stay in the hospital for a few more days and have a facelift, liposuction and a tummy tuck. She even

has someone come in and change her hair colour. She figures since she's got another 30 or 40 years she might as well make the most of it.

She walks out the hospital after the last operation and is killed by an ambulance speeding up to the hospital. She arrives in heaven again,

sees her guardian angel and says, "I thought you said I had another 30-40 years!!" The angel replies, "Sorry. I didn't recognize you."
