As our principal, Lori Clark, wrote in the most recent Glencoe newsletter, there will not be third quarter report cards this school year. This is due to the snow days that had to be made up, including the April teacher planning day (used to work on report cards) changed to an instructional day. If your child’s academic achievement has significantly declined since second quarter, a progress report will be mailed to you. A fourth quarter report card will be mailed at the end of the year. State testing at Glencoe will begin the week of April 17th. Fifth graders will be tested in the areas of: English Language Arts, Math, and Science. We will be sending out a letter/email to inform families of specific testing times and dates for each classroom. The month of May will bring about the 5th grade health curriculum—Family Life and Sexual Health. If you wish to review the materials, they are located in the office. A letter and permission slip will be sent April 17th, 2017 to all families. We will begin the health unit the week of May 1st, 2017. Lastly, at this time of year, it is doubly important for your child to keep working on managing classroom/homework assignments and organizational skills. Creating and maintaining good practices will make the transition to the sixth grade less stressful for all. Thank you for your continued support! It is greatly appreciated! 5th Grade Newsletter

DEAR 5TH GRADE FAMILIES,

It is truly amazing that we are already entering the last quarter of school. It seems like just yesterday we were getting settled into the new school year. Now that we’re moving onward to the last months of school, there is a lot to information to pass along to families. It is greatly appreciated!

can change the world . Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

-Margaret Mead

In the upcoming weeks, students will be researching a state

and creating a persuasive writing piece to convince their audi-

ence to agree with them.

Our 5th grade writers will learn to…

Research a topic using a variety of resources

Take and organize notes using a graphic organizer

Write body paragraphs using a topic sentence, supporting

sentences, and a concluding sentence

Compose a strong, engaging introduction that states writer’s

position on the topic

Add transitional words and phrases to improve sentence fluency

Write a strong ending, which revisits the position stated at the

beginning

Create a resource list/bibliography

Revise using A.R.M.S. (add, remove, move, & sub-

stitute)

Edit using C.U.P.S.

Use Google Classroom to format and type a final

draft

UNITED STATES WAX MUSEUM

OPINION WRITING UNIT

This spring, our 5th graders will be pre-

senting the first ever, United States Wax Muse-

um. Students will be portraying one of the

many Americans that have positively influenced

our nation, including citizens from multiple

backgrounds, races, and perspectives. After re-

searching their historical figure, students will write a monologue to showcase

the person’s life and impact on the United States. Caren Graham, our artist in

residence, will be helping students bring their historical figure to life using an

actor’s workshop model. We will be putting on an evening performance later in

the month of May. Stay tuned for further details!

Student writing is scored

within 6 traits:

Ideas/Content

Organization

Voice

Sentence Fluency

Word Choice

Conventions

Students are scored using

The Oregon Department of

Education Official Writing

Scoring Guide Rubric. A

score of 4 or higher is con-

sidered meeting in 4th grade

and up.
