REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2016

What a very hectic month on the bowling greens, the participation numbers were

excellent as was the quality of the bowls played. Where to start, I guess with the

very successful and well attended Patron‟s Day, thank you to Patron “Saint” Phil

for his very generous donation. The winners on the day were Errold Marshall, Col

Robinson and John Harris. Well Done. Just a suggestion for next year. I would like

to see club uniform as compulsory for such a day in respect to our Patron.

The Cops and Robbers Day was hugely successful despite the wet weather, I‟m told that the food prepared by

Bob Stines and his catering crew was sensational. A massive thank you to the continued and extremely

generous (and significant) support from Peter and Brien Tracey from Trace Accounting. The day could not be

run in the grand manner that it is without Pete and Brien. Cheers once again lads.

We move on to the Anzac Day fundraiser, which was also a lot of fun and friendship. Due to the hard work

from President Tony and his dedicated band of Merry Men and of course to all the bowlers and raffle ticket

purchasers we saw a net profit going directly to the RSL for next year‟s ANZAC Day ceremonies of a very

impressive $3,707-90.

Penrith hosted the Annual “Dave Dixon Shield” and I am the first President to have lost the Shield twice in one

day. Firstly leaving it in the back of Kevin Davis‟ “truck” on the Saturday night (which ultimately was a

planned move so that Kev could come down for a quiet beer on the Sunday). Then secondly an overall loss on

the greens to Penrith. Dizzy and his crew are to be complimented on a fantastic and well run day.

Onto Championships, Congratulations to the winners of “Blaxland Day „n‟ Night Pharmacy” Mixed Pairs Mary

Henry and Paul Rice 19 over a very competitive Betty Coleman and Bob Hector 18. The game had to go into an

extra end after being all square after regulation time.

The OBE‟s are still continuing and at the rate we are progressing there could be a few more eligible by the time

it concludes (I have 25 years to go but an still an outside chance). Veteran Mixed Pairs Final is also coming up.

Saturday of the long weekend saw the October Nominated Fours, played in an enjoyable format and with good

prize money. We had 10 Teams and only 2 of those went through undefeated, congratulations to the ultimate

winners “Eddy The Coach” Charlton, “Hillary” Leadbitter, “Bill” Leadbitter and “Sharky Boy” Slapp (who will

now be even more unbearable after the Sharks have broken a 50 year drought).

Finally, the Blaxland Day „n‟ Night Pharmacy Minor Singles Final has been “run and won” in a great display of

draw bowls by both competitors Bob “Aussie” Hector 31 defeated Graham Olson 21. Congratulations to Aussie

Bob.

The draw has been done for the Mixed Fours so keep any eye on the Notice Board.

We also have some very important representative games coming up with Les Bell Cup, John McBride Shield

and Les Bell Shield, Congratulation and best of lLuck to all those who have been honoured by their selection to

represent our Club.

Page 3: GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB - Amazon S3 · GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB MARY HENRY AND PAUL RICE TAKE 2016 MIXED PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. 1 Hare St Glenbrook ... and Les Bell Shield,

Thank you to my hard working Match Committee and Men‟s Bowls Committee for all that they do to make the

Club run so smoothly.

A massive thank you to all of our valued sponsors and can I urge you to support those who support us if and when

you use the services of Emu Smash, Erics Chinese, Thai Street, Trace Accounting, Blaxland Day “n” Night

Pharmacy, East Blaxland Butchery and One Agency (Andrew & his Team). Mention that you are from the

“Bowlo”. Our Welfare Officers have continued to be extremely busy. Alan Pope, Ron Boath and Joe Armour

continue to carry out their duties with compassion and care. Thanks lads. Thank you to my hard working Match

Committee and Men‟s Bowls Committee for all that they do to make the Club run so smoothly. Finally, thanks

so much to Bob Stines and his catering crew (apprentice Big Barry Scott is fitting snuggly under the roof) for all

their continued great work cooking on the “D J Dempter” B-B-Q.

Paul Hoolahan

President – Glenbrook Panthers Men’s Bowling Club

September has been a very active bowls month with major events being

conducted each week.

Sunday 11th

saw our first “ANZAC DAY 2017 FUNDRAISER”. The bottom

line for this day was a net of $3,707.90! In the words of Peter Bennett (Hon

Treasurer Blaxland Glenbrook RSL Sub-Branch) “Thanks again for your

support to make this day the success it was. It was a great day and the

weather was kind.” Find an appreciation certificate on the men‟s and ladies notice boards.

Our Patron‟s Day Triples was held Saturday 16th

September. Thanks to Phil O‟Donaghoe for his promotion of

this fixture and the sponsorship he provided. Winners were E. Marshall, C. Robertson and John Harris with B.

McKeand (Lemon Tree), Joe Gray and Kevin Davis runners-up.

The annual Glenbrook versus the NSW Police Bowling Club was held on Wednesday 21st September. After a

shaky start due to team changes, the event got under way and the morning results saw Glenbrook in a strong

position to regain the trophy. However after an excellent lunch and a great interview session conducted by Peter

Tracey with Royce Simmons and Brad Drew, the afternoon game was played in wet conditions. This played

into the hands of the Police and they went on to have a comfortable win and retain the shield for another year.

Glenbrook achieved some consolation with the individual team skippered by John Moore picking up first place.

This has been a very profitable couple of months for John! The event owes its success to the continued and

increased sponsorship provided by Brien and Peter Tracey. To Bob and Mary Stines, Helen Tracey and Rhonda

Crimston, thanks for your effort in providing an excellent lunch. Appreciation to Glenbrook Panthers Club

Page 4: GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB - Amazon S3 · GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB MARY HENRY AND PAUL RICE TAKE 2016 MIXED PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. 1 Hare St Glenbrook ... and Les Bell Shield,

particularly Karen and Anthony for their support, and to Christine for the fabulous bar work. Your efforts were

much appreciated.

Our Club‟s run of outs continued on Sunday

25th

September when Penrith Bowling Club

regained the Dave Dixon Memorial Shield.

Thanks go to Bob Coleman who deputized for

Gary Brown. In the words of a prominent

Glenbrook bowler: “a disappointing effort from

some people who will remain anonymous.”

With wet weather and reduced playing

opportunities being available this month, we

were only able to see the completion of the

Mixed Pairs. The Final was played between

Betty Coleman / Bob Hector and Mary Henry /

Paul Rice on Saturday 24th

September. This was

a great spectacle of bowls with Mary and Paul

winning the title 19 to 18 after an extra end!

Congratulations to all participants! The Final of

the Minor Singles between Graham Olson and

Bob Hector will be played on Sunday 2nd

October commencing at 1.00pm.

Mixed Fours entries also close Sunday 2nd

October. These championships will be played throughout October

and early November in the same format as the mixed pairs. Some matches will be deferred due to representative

matches for both men and women.

Thanks to Joe and Sue Armour, Glen Beaver, Bob Harrison, DJ Dempster, Bruce Old, Bruce Palmer, Bede

Thornton, Fred Debnam, Vlad Holowaty, Barry May, Col Robertson, Mark Jones, Kaz Moskwa, Rex Turner,

Rick Watson, Frank Higgins, Anne Jeans, John Harris and Ailsa Leadbitter for their Barefoot Bowls assistance

throughout September. One group of 62 on Saturday 3rd

September led to the Men‟s Club purchasing 25 sets of

bowls specific to barefoot bowling. Thanks to Shannon Slapp for his organization.

Our green keepers have worked consistently throughout the past year to provide us with the best possible

surfaces. Last Wednesday the top green was taken out for maintenance and this will put a great deal of pressure

on the remaining green. With the demands of barefoot bowls, twilight, premier league, coaching, regular

competition and roll-ups, players are asked to obey the requests of our green keepers.

Many thanks to Barry Scott for his assistance with the BBQ. It is much appreciated by Bob Stines and, indeed,

all members. Anyone else who may be able to lend a hand with the BBQ, please let me or Bob Stines know.

Enjoy your bowls in October!

The 2016 Patron‟s Day event was well attended and featured some great bowls

being played.

The overall winner for the day was the team comprising Errold Marshall, Col

Robertson and John Harris with three wins plus a margin of 23.

The runners-up with two wins and a margin of 20 were B McKeand, Joe Gray and Kevin Davis.

The game winners for each of the three games were;-

Game 1 – Frank Higgins, Des Dempster, Bob Coleman

Game 2 – Chris Leighton, Brian Hunt, Victor Emmanuel

Game 3 – Alan Fitzpatrick, John Leadbitter, Joe Armour

Thanks for the support the Selectors were given during the 2015/2016 season. The level of

quality feedback and general communication made what can be a difficult job much easier.

The Selector‟s Committee for 2016/2017 will soon take up duties and will start the process of

organising for 2017 Pennants.

Keep an eye on the board for the Pennants nomination sheet. Even if you are not sure of your

particular availability dates, put your name up with a qualifying comment or put it on the

Reserve List. We need to know numbers so we can determine how many teams we can

nominate.

We will keep you posted as things develop. In the meantime, let‟s hope the winds die down and

the grass grows up. And let‟s enjoy our bowls.

LAPSTONE PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JACK ATTACK REPORT

Stage 3 Lawn Bowls

Stage 3 has been lucky enough to be involved in a brand new program!

Thanks to Mrs Leadbitter (Amelia’s grandma!) and her friends, Lapstone Public School Years 5 and 6 have had a

fun-filled introduction to the sport of Lawn Bowls.

It all started on Sunday afternoon, earlier this term, when the staff had a Barefoot Bowls session. There were many,

many laughs to be had and a great deal of confusion . There were bowls that ended up on someone else’s rink and

more than one gutter ball . All in all, we had a fabulous time and we learnt, first hand, that Lawn Bowls was a lot

trickier than we first thought!

So…Stage 3 have entered the realm of Lawn Bowls with their participation in a specially designed program called

Junior Jack Attack. It teaches us all the skills and tricks of getting the bowl where we actually want it to go. Our

Stage 3 Lawn Bowls Olympics were a HUGE amount of fun. We learnt heaps and laughed heaps. We loved having

Mr and Mrs Leadbitter and their Glenbrook Bowling Club friends , Mrs Jacka and Mrs Collins and we would like to

thank them for their generosity, patience and time with us. Lapstone Public School is lucky enough to be able to

keep the kit on loan so that the skills can be taught throughout the school. Next stop…year 4…and beyond!

Mrs Smith .

The start of a great initiative to encourage junior participation.

55th Birthday / Emerald Anniversary On Thursday 22nd September, over 70 members celebrated 55 years operation of the women’s bowling club and honoured the 25 foundation members. A most enjoyable day of bowls was followed by a party of hot finger food and sandwiches with celebratory cup cakes .Many thanks to all who participated and to the people who shared the work load to make this such a great day.(Photographs to follow next month.)

Senior fours off to State Championships!

Having won the district and regional play-offs, the senior fours now progress to the State finals at Tuncurry on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th October . Congratulations and best wishes to Helen Tracey, Rhonda Crimston, Val Charlwood and Joy Howe.

ANZAC DAY 2017 FUNDRAISER

WAS A DAY OF MIXED BOWLS

AND FRIENDSHIP

All Goals Achieved on SUNDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER 2016 Thank You The members of the Blaxland Glenbrook RSL Sub Branch wish to thank the Glenbrook Panther Bowlers for their support for the ANZAC Day 2017 Fundraiser Bowls Day. It was a huge success which raised a significant amount of money for next year’s ANZAC Day ceremonies. The friendships formed in this endeavour will remain strong. Our thanks also to Karen and the staff at Panthers Glenbrook Bowling Club. The business Community of Glenbrook, Blaxland, East Blaxland and Brooklands were amazing in the great support given towards prizes for the day. We are all proud to be members of this community.

History World War 1 1916 A terrible year

1916 was the halfway point in four years of slaughter. For the French, there was the horror of the battle of Verdun. For Britain and the Empire forces – and the French who were also there – the period is remembered for the series of battles known as the First Battle of the Somme.

The British and Commonwealth casualties from this fighting totalled an appalling 420,000, and the French lost 204,000. Combined with the German losses, there were more than a million battle casualties on the Somme.

For Australia, there had been few bright spots in a year that seemed to begin well enough. But once its troops became committed to the Western Front battles from July, their war quickly soured, with heavy losses and suffering at the front and widespread mourning at home.

The Australians had played a full part in 1916. The Somme offensive did not achieve its goals., However, it was one of a series of hammer blows that eventually weakened the German army. In this war of attrition, the allies suffered similarly but had the advantage, that their burden could be shared between the French, the British and Empire troops.

Remembrance Day 2016. The ceremony will be held on Sunday 6 November 2016 in order to allow everyone to attend.

Please assemble by 10:20 AM.

THOUGHT OF THE MONTH

“If we are all descended from apes, why do we still

have apes!”

Sunday 18 September saw a visit by Ingleburn Travelling Bowlers. For a change the idea was to have lunch

followed by an afternoon of bowls.

However, rain put a dampener on these plans with the result being – NO bowls!

Ingleburn departed about 2.30pm following the drawing of the 100 board and the raffles of wine and meat trays.

Ingleburn has since contacted me and said how much they enjoyed the day despite the rain. They also advised

that they would like to return next year and try their luck!

Our next mixed day will be Sunday 16 October. This is our last scheduled game before our November

Christmas function. This day is always a wonderful day. Therefore,. Make sure your name is on the list for this

event. Don‟t be disappointed!

See you on the green.

IMPROVING YOUR PERFORMANCE SKILLS

Presented by Macka Jensen

INTRODUCTION: Overall this article is about improving your

performance skills, but first let us recapitulate your memory about the four stages of your lawn bowls training, or those who have not

been taught but have been made familiar with it over their years of play, or if not, these stages should have been done as follows;

1. Basic Training: This covered six practical introductory lessons on the draw shot, building a head, moves and counter moves all prior

to playing your first social game. This preparatory training was followed up with mental skills such as; attitude, motivation, goals setting,

commitment, people skills and lawn bowls etiquette. This prepared (male or female) bowlers for advanced training as follows.

2. Advanced Training: This included: tactical defence, attack and recovery with the

use of positional bowls, on-shots, running and drive shots, plus, game fitness through training drills and mental preparatory skills, such as self-talk and

managing imagery. This advanced training was preparatory for club competition, district pennants and high performance training.

3. High Performance Training: This prepared you for competition conditions and consisted of improving your performance skill with seven steps of high

performance practice with further mental skills such as; managing anxiety, emotions, concentration, and easy long term physical conditioning.

4. Finals training: Finals training enlightened bowlers to the pervading tone or mood of a place or situations, especially with reference to feelings or emotions

highly evoked under fatigue and consistent competition pressure.

IMPROVEMENT AREAS: Every high performance coach will tell you that the six

fundamental areas of improving your present performance skills are as follows;

Page 15: GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB - Amazon S3 · GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB MARY HENRY AND PAUL RICE TAKE 2016 MIXED PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. 1 Hare St Glenbrook ... and Les Bell Shield,

1. Alignment and length: Assessing and improving your playing ability in relation

to the skills of alignment and delivery length. 2. Head building: Head building and counter moves by the lead and second, and the

supporting elements required by the third and skip. 3. The tactical purpose of the shots: The tactical purpose of the various shots

such as; drawn positional bowls, on-shots, running and drive shots. 4. Tactics: The moves and counter moves using defence, attack and recovery to

obtain, retain or retrieve the shot/s. 5. Mental training: The nine mental skills of success.

6. Game, mental and physical fitness: Physical fitness is an area much avoided at club level competition and most members rely on game and mental fitness rather

than body fitness, but we express, you need the capacity of all three to reach and play in the finals of your competition.

COMPETITION CONDITIONS: However just recapitulation or learning the areas listed above is only the first step in the process of improving your playing skills if the goal is to

win in competition. Bowlers do not fail because their skills level is poor: they fail because

their ability to perform the skill in competition conditions is poor and that's a coaching issue.

SKILL DEFINITION: For the purpose if this article skill is defined as; “The ability to perform the delivery skill very well, with good alignment and length, under

fatigue, mental pressure and consistently in competition conditions”. To achieve this you need to go to a higher level of training as depicted below because there is a

huge difference between learning a skill and learning to perform the skill consistently, particularly when you are fatigued, under mental pressure and trying to execute it

before a competitive audience.

HIGHER LEVEL TRAINING: Now, if you want to learn and master higher performance

skills so that you can enhance your performance under competitions conditions, then practice, practice, practice will not cut it! You need the 7 Skills Step of Higher

Performance practice as follows.

THE 7 SKILLS STEPS OF HIGHER PERFORMANCE: This is a logical, systematic seven

step process that takes bowlers (male or female) from the execution of advanced skills

to being able to perform under competition conditions. These skill steps are as follows;

Skill Step 1: “Perform the delivery skill”. This is the first step and unfortunately for

many, it's the last step in their basic drawing skills program. It is about here that many coaches stop coaching the drawing skills, believing, if the bowler can perform the skill

and it looks like it does in the coaching textbooks then they have done their job. Wrong! their job is not even 10% completed.

Skill Step 2: Perform the delivery skill “very well”. Skills mastery come from regular practice combined with quality feedback from coaches and may incorporate the use of

video and other performance analysis technologies. The best one of all, is the coach's eye! This requires a margin of error training drill.

Skill Step 3: Perform the delivery skill very well “with good alignment and length”. In Lawn Bowls, alignment perfection is coordinated with eye, hand and aiming point

Page 16: GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB - Amazon S3 · GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB MARY HENRY AND PAUL RICE TAKE 2016 MIXED PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. 1 Hare St Glenbrook ... and Les Bell Shield,

alignment in the follow-through action; plus the intake quantity and breathing control

that is combined with the correct delivery arm heigh and gliding pendulum arm speed which is required for each particular shot length, but unless these skills can withstand

competition levels of body accelerations, agility and light competition explosiveness, then it is not competition ready, this requires game fitness and respiratory control

through training drills.

Skill Step 4: Perform the delivery skill very well, with good alignment and length,

“under fatigue”. Think of the “danger times” when the team is under fatigue mentally and physically cause when you are one shot up with two ends to go, or, another

scenario of playing the last winning shot of the game, when your eight shots down with an open draw. Often many competitions come down to quality skill execution during

the last 25% of game time and the ability to perform fundamental skills such as the draw shot when tired, dehydrated, glycogen depleted and suffering from neuromuscular

fatigue. Remember, when this occurs, mental, game and physical fitness is the key to any performance, your outlook should be, fitness keeps me cool, calm and collective

with the winning edge.

Skill Step 5: Perform the delivery skill very well, with good alignment and length, under fatigue and “mental pressure”. How many times do you see bowlers miss simple

target or make simple drawing errors at critical moments towards the head with narrow, wide, too short or too long bowls within competition? There is no doubt that emotional

stress and mental pressure impact on the ability of the bowler concentration to perform skills with quality and accuracy, but this is a coaching issue such as introducing

harassment training which incorporate the elements of concentration and pressure within skills practice, which ensure that training is more challenging and more

demanding than the competition environment you're preparing for.

Skill Step 6: Perform the delivery skill very well, with good alignment and length at the

correct gliding pendulum arm speed, under fatigue, mental pressure and “consistently”. Being able to perform the skill under competition conditions once could

be luck, but being able to do it consistently under competition conditions is the sign of a real champion. Consistency in skills execution in competition comes from consistency of

training standards. Adopting a “no-compromise” approach to the quality of skills

execution at all bowling performances is a sure way to develop a consistent quality of skills execution in competition conditions. Unfortunately, believe it or not, many bowlers

have three way of operating their brain to their performances; “The Social Brain”: When playing social bowls: this is the relaxed side of the

brain that accepts anything without any great concentration, take it as it go's attitude; laziness, inaccuracy, sloppiness and poor skills execution. Occasionally

performs a good shot to show others they haven't quite lost it. “The Training Brain”: This is the brain they use in training and preparation. This

brain attitude may if allowed to; accepts laziness, inaccuracy, sloppiness and poor skills execution believing that “it will be OK on the day” and everything will

somehow magically be right at the competition. This is also applicable to those who don't train,

“The Competition Brain”: This is the “brain” they require to use in training and competition. The secret to competition success is to use the “competition brain”

in every social game, every training session, club competition and in all pennants

games. “It's an all in build-up to the finals”.

Page 17: GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB - Amazon S3 · GLENBROOK PANTHERS BOWLING CLUB MARY HENRY AND PAUL RICE TAKE 2016 MIXED PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP. 1 Hare St Glenbrook ... and Les Bell Shield,

Skill Step 7: “Perform the delivery skill very well, with good alignment and length,

under fatigue, mental pressure, consistently “in competition conditions”. This is what it all about. The real factor in what makes a champion bowler is their capacity to

perform consistently in competition and final conditions. Performing a basic skill well is not difficult. But add the fatigue of 3 hours of competition, the pressure of knowing the

whole season is on the line with one shot, the expectations of the club, the coach and selectors, the management, team-mates and club members and all of a sudden that

basic skill is not so basic; it becomes the equivalent of juggling nitroglycerine (liquid dynamite) on your head. One simple mistake and the “match” can end disastrously

with a bang! “We convey the tales, spin a whimsical and enthralling atmosphere through four literary pieces” as follows;

1. Excitement and success: The build up to the atmosphere of finals and grand finals is like static electricity it stimulates the pervading tone or mood of a place or

bowling situations, especially with reference to the higher feelings or emotions that are evoked. It's electrical disturbance in the body and mind is caused by the

excitement of success which creates changes to your tone or mood, place or

situations because your feelings or emotions are evoked to higher levels. “It's the adrenal rush” and it starts just before the last pennants game that gets you into

the finals. The thing is to remember, when you get the adrenalin feeling, increase the practice of your respiratory training to lower any high levels of adrenalin.

2. Atmospheric and performance atonement: This involves the place and situations e.g. if your training and club competition is played in an higher

atmosphere, the green surface are heaver (more moisturised), the alignment is narrower, the bowl has to travel faster and greater force is used in the delivery

skill and your body performance and mind becomes atoned to it, whereas if your pennants and competition finals are played in a place of lower atmosphere the

alignment is wider, the green surface is much dryer (less moisture) and there is less body force because the greens surface is harder and much faster and the bowl

is delivered slower, your body performance and mind may not be atoned to it. 3. Selection: It's imperative for atmospheric changes and team selection reasons to

arrange for most of the trial games to be conducted at various club greens within

the allotted competition area, because strengths and weaknesses of individual and team performances are exposed.

4. Pressure scenarios: This is self figurative illustrations dramatised in your mind for particular game pressure effects that can be imagine and existing only in finals

games, these scenarios examples are as follows; a. The scenario: Imagine your eight down with one bowl left etc. etc.

b. Picture the required shot: Picture the shot to play, then analyse it's advantages and disadvantages. Should your performance ability of the

shot be outweighed by disadvantages select an easier shot, c Imagine the playing skill: Imagine playing that shot with precise

precision and confidence above anything you have played before. d. Practice: This practice is done 100% mentally resting at home, and also
