GLEBE MATTERS

Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Glebe Public School for 2020!

We hope that you had an enjoyable holiday break and were able to spend quality time with family and friends.

We are excited about the year ahead and look forward to sharing our plans for 2020 with you and our students over the coming weeks.

You would be aware that the bushfires have had, and continue to have, a devastating impact across NSW. These fires have personally affected members of our school community and our thoughts are with each of them during this difficult time. Our staff have been provided with strategies to support students who have experienced trauma as a result of the fires and attached is some information for parents.

The school leadership team have discussed ways which we, as a school, can add our support to the communities that have been impacted by the fires and we will let you know about our plans over the coming weeks. If you have any thoughts or ideas, please let us know.

Welcome Ms Robinson This term we welcome Ms Kelly Robinson as our Relieving School Administration Manager while Mrs Purnomo is on leave. Ms Robinson will also be in the position of Business Manager and is experienced in both roles. We look forward to the skills and experience she will bring to these roles.

The administrative procedures and processes are going to be streamlined to support our growing numbers and to meet the needs of all of our families. In order to ensure efficiency in this process, these will be implemented incrementally. We appreciate your understanding during this process.

2019 Parent/Carer Satisfaction Survey

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2019 parent/carer school satisfaction survey. Your input and ideas are incredibly valuable in our ongoing evaluative processes and future planning.

Throughout the survey period, the leadership team systematically reviewed the data, with a focus on the areas identified as needing further development. We are pleased to say that we have been able to put measures in place to address each of these identified areas.

It is vital that as a school we continue to strive for excellence and that you, as an integral part of our school and community, are in-volved in this process. As always, should you have feedback, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Here’s to a great 2020!

Class Names and Structures

This year, each class is named after a native plant, flower or tree. Below is the list of class names for 2020. You will receive ad-ditional information today about which class your child is in this year. Kindergarten parents will receive this information next week.

As per the information distributed in Term 4, 2019, we have several stage based classes this year. Stage based classes may also be known as multi-age or composite classes.

Sometimes parents may be apprehensive about how this will impact on their child’s learning. The key to understanding stage based classes is to realise that student learning is based on a two year continuum of learning and classes are made up of stu-dents drawn from these different year levels.

In reality, every class is a stage based class as teachers routinely differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of individual students, for example, a student in Year 2 (Stage 1) may be undertaking work at a Year 3 (Stage 2) level and vice versa.

At Glebe Public School, teachers plan and work collaboratively with their Assistant Principal to design teaching and learning programs for their stage. Differentiated groupings and programs run across grade and stage based classes to target teaching and learning to student’s specific needs. Effective teaching is about addressing the needs of students through ongoing (formative) assessment.

If you have any further questions about Stage Based Classes please speak with the Assistant Principal responsible for your child’s class.

Communication and Events

We understand that you all have busy lives and that knowing when up-coming events are scheduled to take place is important. The events for Term One have started to be listed on the Glebe Public School calendar through the Skoolbag application and we will be available from the end of this week. We encourage you to download this application so that you are aware of the schedule of events and activities and any changes that may occur. Natalya Kardasis has been employed for the role of Community Liaison Officer (CLO). One of her roles will be the updating and monitoring of communication across the school.

There is a hard copy of the schedule in this edition of Glebe Matters.

* Please note that whilst forward planning is a priority, things can change at the

last minute for a variety of reasons. Likewise, Opportunities can also arise during the term. In these situations we will provide as much notice as possible.

Building Works Update The building works have continued during the holiday period and we thank all Departmental staff and the contractors who have worked tirelessly to complete a variety of tasks. Some of the works that have been completed to date include:

External painting of all buildings

Resurfacing of the staff carpark

New sleepers for the garden beds

New picket fences

New carpet in the vast majority of classrooms and movement areas

New cabinets and sinks in classrooms There will be additional works undertaken during 2020 as required. Our current focus is the school playground. It is important that our students have a safe and engaging outdoor environment where they can continue to learn and develop their interaction and social skills beyond the classroom. With this in mind, the next stage of the playground works will include:

Interactive playground markings - designed to promote relationship building and positive social interaction

New basketball backboards and hoops

Garden works - additional sleepers and landscaping

We continue to work with The Department to explore possible options for the ‘grass’ area.

New Library Space!! You may have noticed some changes over the holidays. Most notably, the library has moved! You can now find us downstairs next to Treehouse.

The idea of moving the library was talked about for a long time. While the library space upstairs was big, beauti-ful and spacious, it was difficult to get to and limited access at play times. The move was a huge undertaking, with close to 5,000 resources being moved. By moving the library we are allowing greater access to a safe space and central point for all kinds of reading, creating and cultural activities. We hope that it will provide new oppor-tunities to access information, build knowledge and engage in quiet reflection and imaginative play during class time and playtime. While the new library space has books and furniture, it is still a work in progress, and we hope it will grow and evolve as the year progresses.

This year the library will be open from Tuesday to Friday and scheduled as RFF (Relief from Face-to-Face). This means that classroom teachers will not be in the room for library lessons. Please be as organised as you can to return books on your child’s library day. Students from K – 2 do require a library bag for borrowing to establish good borrowing habits and help to care for the books. If students forget to return a book one week, or want to keep reading the same book, don’t worry! We don’t charge late fees but we may limit borrowing if students have more than one book out on loan. If you have lost a book, don’t panic! You can pay for it at the office, re-place it yourself or just let us know that you will keep looking and get it back to us when you find it.

While literacy and the reading, sharing and borrowing of books remain the foundational skills for library, we also teach a broader spectrum of literacies including digital literacy, visual literacy and information literacy that are essential skills for 21st century learners. In Term 1 this year we will be covering Digital Citizenship, exploring ways to engage ethically, responsibly, safely and legally online. In Term 2 we will cover public speaking and pre-senting prepared and impromptu speeches.

Research shows that students with a dedicated, well supported library do better at school. We are so lucky at Glebe Public School to have such great support from the teaching staff and the community including the P&C who generously fund the building of the library collection, and Glee Books who provide access to great new titles and various prizes throughout the year.

We hope that you will come and visit us in our new space whenever the door is open.

Kind regards,

Miss Callen

Teacher Librarian

Road Safety

Over the next week, all classes will revisit road safety as part of their learning in Personal Development, Health, Physical Edu-cation (PDHPE). It is vital that all students have a solid understanding of road safety.

A summary of the content that will be covered is in the flyer below. Please take the time to discuss these messages with your child/children at home.
