LAT ISOC ActivitiesLAT ISOC Activities

The LAT ISOC is organized to:– Operate the instrument, in conjunction with other GLAST ground

elements– Generate reconstructed LAT events and automated science

products Main Functions:

– LAT command planning and construction– Instrument health and safety monitoring– Maintain and modify LAT FSW and the LAT Testbed– LAT calibration, performance verification and optimization– Process and archive LAT data– Maintain and optimize the software that produces science data

Incorporates online and offline operations activities for the LAT – Extends existing pre-launch activities into on-orbit operations

Supports the LAT collaboration

Current Readiness Level

Real-time commanding of the LAT through the MOC uses scripted PROCs All LAT commands in the T&C database delivered to the MOC are included in

Narrative Procedures (NPs) All procedures to be exercised during GLAST End-to-End tests

– Development schedule is tied to ETE schedule Separate procedures for activities in GLAST Launch and Early Orbit period (L&EO) Contingency procedures included PROCs are verified against LAT testbed before use with GLAST

GLAST Large Area Telescope – ISOC Overview and Status DOE Annual Review, 13 June 2007

Flight Ops: Real-time Monitoring Flight Ops: Real-time Monitoring ISOC supports real-time activities and instrument monitoring during GLAST-to-ground

contacts (~8x per day)– ISOC monitoring tools have LAT I&T heritage– Used in pre-launch End-to-End tests and Mission Simulations

GLAST Large Area Telescope – ISOC Overview and Status DOE Annual Review, 13 June 2007

8

Flight Ops: LAT Mission PlanningFlight Ops: LAT Mission Planning Toolkit for planning weekly

LAT on-orbit activity schedules

– LAT “Activity” manager– On-board LAT Absolute

Time command Sequence (ATS) builder

– File upload scheduler– Science run scheduler– Real-time PROC

scheduler MP databases

– Orbit data and events– FSW files– LAT PROCs– LAT commands

Tested and rehearsed through GLAST Mission Planning Exercises

LAT Collaboration Support for Science OperationsLAT Collaboration Support for Science Operations Data Monitoring

– Pre-Level 1 monitoring, diagnosing low-level processing (INFN Pisa) Calibration of Subsystems

– Tracker (INFN, UCSC)– Calorimeter (IN2P3, NRL)– Anticoincidence Detector (GSFC, SLAC)

Performance Diagnostics and Diagnosis– Subsystem failure simulations (INFN Bari)– Monitoring the high-level performance of the LAT (instrument response

functions, timing) (INFN Perugia, IN2P3 Bordeaux, U. Washington) Automated Science Processing (aspects of)

– Development of GRB detection algorithm (GSFC, Ohio State, U. Denver)– Testing of source monitoring (INFN Perugia)

Background Monitoring– Particle separation (e/p) (Hiroshima U.)

Launch & Early Orbit– LAT Commissioner is J. E. Grove (NRL)– Planning of analyses to be performed in L&EO are being coordinated with

broader LAT collaboration– Core agenda for recent ISOC workshop in April/May 2007

ISOC FacilitiesISOC Facilities Construction of the ISOC operations

support area and expansion of the LAT Dataflow lab were completed in January 2007– Co-located in building 84 with

ISOC staff offices– Ops support area fully populated

with workstations, already in use for GLAST testing

– Dataflow lab ready for installation of LAT calibration unit, returned in April from successful beam test

SummarySummary

An ambitious GLAST ground operations test phase is underway, constrained by remaining Observatory environmental and functional testing– All ISOC elements hard at work preparing for launch and

mission The ISOC involves collaboration participation and support,

particularly in Science Operations and SAS
