U.S. Representative K. Michael Conaway (R-Texas) will hold a town hall meeting at the GardenCity Community Center, 117 S. Myrl St., GardenCity TX at 1:00 p.m.– 2:00 p.m. on Monday,November 27, 2017The town hall is open to the public and membersof the media.

The Glasscock County Commissioners Court meton October 10, 2017 at 9:00AM. Charles Gullywas not present.Votes were canvassed and stand as presented.The discussion and possible action regardingOncor electric line placement on CR125 wastabled, as well as requirements for trees andirrigation on SH 158.There was discussion, but no action regardingstriping the parking areas around county ownedproperty, a new employee handbook,and repairsat Drumright Community Center.Bearcat Wind Energy II LLC turned in anapplication for abatement.Approved actions include 2018 retirement plan,2018 Medicare supplement insurance andprescription drug program for retirees,andappointing Nathan Halfman and Michael Hock tothe Glasscock County Appraisal District board.The court accepted a donation on behalf of theGCEMS and VFD, and continuing educationhours for Tina Flores.The court went into executive session to considerpersonnel matters. Following the executivesession a motion passed to utilize a system tokeep up with employee's vacation and sick time.The information will be provided to departmentheads and will be included on employee's checkstub.Accounts for payment were approved, anddepartment reports were presented.The next regularly called Commissioners' Courtmeeting will be December 13, 2017 at 9:00AM.
GLASSCOCK COUNTYCOMMISSIONeR Called MEETINGA special called Commissioner Court meetingwas held on October 27, 2017 to accept theresignation of Christie Dyer as EMS coordinator,and to open the position to accept applications.Applications were taken until November 13 at9:00AM.
A special called meeting was held on November21, 2017.Carol Jost was recommended and approved asEMS coordinator.Discussion was held, but action tabled until theregular December meeting regarding repairs ofthe Drumright Community Center.Revisions to the Glasscock County EmployeeHandbook were approved.A motion was approved to correct a clerical errorin the legal description of the Edmondson WindEnergy Reivestment Zone from February 12,2017.

The GCISD School Board met at 8:00 AMon November 13, 2017.New faculty from both campuses wereintroduced to the board.Mr. Bicknell reported that the elementaryenrollment is at 167, and their averageattendance rate is 97.1%. Mr. Piercereported that the secondary campus has anenrollment of 149 with a average attendancerate of 98%. The total enrollment is 316,which is the highest in several years. Thenumber turned into UIL for re-alignmentwas 92.Mrs. Hastings, school librarian, gave anupdate on the library operations, andprovided a sample of a lesson being taught.There was discussion regarding selling thehouse south of the post office, and potentialof building new homes. No action wastaken.Information was provided the definition of aDistrict of Innovation. A District ofInnovation Plan resolution and committeeselection were approved.The board went into executive session todiscuss personnel.The next regular meeting will be onDecember 18, 2017 at 6:00PM.
Hunt for Heroes
GCISD students welcomed and waved toparticipants of the annual Hunt for Heroeshonorees.Honorees were gifted a picture frame madeby members of the GCHS ag classes.Presentation of the gifts were done byGCHS FFA members.
The Hon. Sylvia Chavez of the Child Protective Court of thePermian swore in 23 new volunteers including MelissaGonzalez of Garden City as Court Appointed SpecialAdvocates for abused and neglected children on November 20,2017.Family and friends gathered in the Midland County Courthouseto watch the new volunteers take an oath promising to advocatefor the best interest of the child. CASA of West Texas serveschildren from seven West Texas counties including Midland,Glasscock, Martin, Howard, Dawson, Gaines, and Andrews.Melissa Gonzalez is the first person from Glasscock County toserve as a CASA volunteer. After the swearing in these newCASAs will join the other volunteers in advocating for fosterchildren in the Child Protective Court System. As an officerof the court, they will ensure that the children’s needs arerecognized and best interests are considered both in thecourtroom and in the community.CASA volunteers are asked to meet with the child regularlyand are authorized to interview people in the child’s life suchas social workers, attorneys, and teachers. They attend courthearings with the child and report their findings andrecommendations to the judge.“Our volunteers pledge to stay with each child until the case isclosed, and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home," saidPatty Pisklak, Executive Director of CASA of West Texas."The advocate is often the only consistent adult presence in thechild’s life.”“With about 500 children in foster care from the seven countieswe serve, there are many more advocates needed,” saidPisklak. There are no prerequisites for becoming a CASAvolunteer other than being at least 21 years of age, clearing anextensive background screening and successfully completing30 hours of training.If you are interested in learning more about becoming a CASAVolunteer and the rewards that come along with serving as thevoice of a child, please contact Kathy Harmon, 432.684.1114or visit www.CASAwtx.org. The next volunteer training isscheduled for February 20, 2017, in Big Spring, Texas.CASA of West Texas is a member of the National CASAAssociation, a network of more than 900 CASA programsserving children in 49 states and Washington DC.

FORT STOCKTON – The Texas A&MAgriLife Extension Service has announced twoagriculture and natural resources personneladditions to its 23-county Far West Texasdistrict.Kloey Cargill is transferring fromThrockmorton County to the Brewster/JeffDavis counties post effective Nov. 20, saidRebel Royall, AgriLife Extension districtadministrator at Fort Stockton.Also, Cody Trimble will become the agency’snew Glasscock County AgriLife Extensionagent on Nov. 1, but will complete the agency’sFirst Step orientation training in Sterling andReagan counties prior to assuming hispermanent post Dec. 1, Royall said.“Cody has a lifelong association with AgriLifeExtension as his dad, Tim Trimble, was alongtime county agent most recently in MooreCounty. Cody grew up not only in the 4-Hprogram but exposed to other facets of AgriLifeExtension as well, so he has the makings, plusthe family background, to become a top agent.“I have every confidence these two youngpeople will have much to contribute to thestrong youth and adult components already inplace within these three key counties.”Cody earned an associate degree from BlinnCommunity College at Brenham, a bachelor’sfrom Texas A&M University at College Stationand is currently completing studies toward amaster’s degree from Texas Tech University atLubbock.His work experience includes stints as studiocoordinator at Savant Photography, Lubbock;communications intern at the South Plains FoodBank; Texas Tech graduate teaching assistant;and director of marketing and promotions forDavis Mountain Properties, Fort Davis.

The varsity Lady Kats Cross Countryteam made their 5th consecutive trip tothe state meet in early November. Itwas program's 7th appearance out of thelast 8 years.The 2017 Lady Kat CC team won theDistrict Championship, placed 3rd atregionals, and 9th at the state meet.Members are: Rita Flores (Fr), AveryJost (Fr), Jordan Driver (Fr), KylieSeidenberger (Fr), Kenzie Schaefer(Sr), Lyndee Walker (Jr), AllisonHalfmann (Jr), Ixchel Sotello (Jr)
Lady Kats Basketball started with a resounding 59-19 win over RichlandSprings on November 7. The season opener was just two days after some ofthe Lady Kats competed in the state cross country meet, and was the firstgame in the new GCISD gym.The Lady Kats went on to win the Westbrook Tournament.The next home game for the high school Lady Kats will be during the GCTournament Dec 7-9.
