Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland´s premier outdoor and Adventure Company, now celebrating its 20th anniversary. The Company was established in 1994 by four young environmentally thinking, mountain and outdoor enthusiasts who became pioneers in the way of introducing the wonders of Icelandic nature to travelers from all over the world. We started by offering the original Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Sólheimajökull glacier, Hiking and other adventures soon followed. By offering a wide selection of Glacier Walks all year round they have now become one of the most popular tourism activities in Iceland. Even though NO technical requirements are needed for our glacier walks, safety is a big issue when travelling on glaciers. Therefore all our guides go through a strict training program to make sure you enjoy your adventure in a fun but safe way. From the beginning our aim has been to offer adventures for all. We wish you a a pleasant stay in Iceland and welcome you to experience the wonders of Iceland with us.

Practical informationPre-booking is necessary to guarantee your place
Clothing:Bring warm clothing for all our tours. A thick sweater, a waterproof shell, gloves and good hiking shoes may come of good use on all our tours. For those who need, we can provide raincoats and some extra clothing. Hiking shoes can be rented for a small fee (1.000 ISK.), just ask when you book the tour. All specific gear such as crampons and ice axes or other mountaineering equipment is always provided by Icelandic Mountain Guides.
Departures:Departures dated in the brochure are guaranteed. Special tours for groupsor private tours can be provided at any time up on request.
Cancelation policy:Cancellation received more than 24 hours prior to departure are fully refunded.Cancellation received less than 24 hours prior to departure will be charged full price.
Security:The Icelandic climate is rough and variable, so is the terrain. We therefore reserve theright to alter and modify our program at any time before or during the trip to assurethe safety of our clients and staff. Our well trained guides will do their very best toassure you a safe and pleasant journey.
Languages:All Icelandic Mountain Guides day tours are conducted in English. Other languages can be provided upon request for private departures.

Our GuidesIcelandic Mountain Guides is proud to be an award winning as well as a leading company for staff training in Icelandic tourism. We have over 20 years of experience in educating, entertaining and assuring the safety of our guests. This applies to the Greenland Ice cap, the summit of Antarctica and everywhere in between. The pinnacle of our educational program is the 27 days of direct training and exams our glacier guides go through from the time they are hired until they achieve the full requirements for an IMG Mountain Guide. Our award winning training program is based on safety and training standards from New Zealand. In addition to training courses, our guides work over 100 days under direct and indirect supervision and are required to advance to a certain standard in their personal mountaineering. Most of our guides will have completed an eight day Wilderness First Responder first aid course and have received advanced training from working with the elite units of the Icelandic rescue teams. With us you are not only in good hands, we believe you are in the best of hands.

Sólheimajökull is very accessible and it offers the perfect conditions for all kinds of ice-based activities such as glacier walks and ice climbing. If you wish to experience unique icescapes, ridges, deep crevasses and the sensation of glacial ice under your feet, our guided tours offer the perfect opportunity.

Easy Glacier Walk on SólheimajökullOn this safe and easy glacier walk you will get a chance to feel a real Icelandic glacier under your feet on the breathtaking Sólheimajökull glacier. The tour focuses on the exploration of water cauldrons, waterways and other ice features of the glacier where you will experience the different shades of glacier ice. Before setting out a glacier guide will teach you how to use the basic glacier equipment, such as crampons and ice axes, which are provided for all glacier tours. This tour is family friendly and suitable for all over the age of 8 years old.

Glacier Walk on Sólheimajökull On this easy glacier walk we get a chance to go further up onto the Sólheimajökull glacier, for a better look at the wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses that awaits your discovery. While enjoying the glacier and it‘s spectacular surroundings, you will learn more about the behavior of glaciers and their impacts on nature. No technical requirements are needed and at the beginning of the tour, an experienced glacier guide will teach you how to use basic glacier equipment, such as crampons and an ice axe which are provided for all tours into this magical frozen world, suitable for everyone.

Ice Climbing An ice climbing tour is a great way to experience the outlet glaciers of Iceland. No technical requirements or experience is needed since the challenge can be adapted to each group and individual. All ice climbing equipment is provided by Icelandic Mountain Guides and fitted to you by one of our experienced guides. The tour takes you up onto the Sólheimajökull glacier where we search for the perfect spot for the group to have a go at the sport of ice climbing. After learning the basic technique the adventure truly begins. We do operate in small groups so everyone gets a chance to shine. From Skógar to Þórsmörk - Hiking Day TourThe Fimmvörðuháls pass from Skógar to Þórsmörk is one of Iceland´s most popular hiking routes. The trail takes us up from Skógar, along Skógá River and its many waterfalls and up between the two glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. There we will we discover the recently formed lava and the new craters, Magni and Móði. The fresh lava is still steaming under the surface and the heat of the lava can still be felt. Heading down from the craters to the magnificent Þórsmörk glacier valley we continue to enjoy more geological features as well as some amazing views over the highlands of Iceland and the surrounding glaciers. Glacier AdventureThis is a moderate Glacier Walk in the majestic landscape of Svínafellsjökull, surrounded by some of Iceland’s most spectacular peaks. You will hike along the Svínafellsjökull glacier tongue into the valley between the summits of Hvannadalshnúkur and Hrútsfjall, traversing zones of different glacial formations. A Glacier Walk and the Glacier LagoonOn this amazing combination tour you will start with a Glacier Walk on Svínafellsjökull glacier tongue. There, one of our experienced glacier guides will lead you safely through the glacial wonderland of ridges, crevasses and ice formations. Next, we had over to the famous Glacier Lagoon for a ride on a Zodiac Adventure Cruise, sailing between the icebergs of all shapes and sizes, floating around the clear blue water. After the Zodiac experience there is time to go down to the black sand beach to take a closer look at the icebergs that have floated all the way from the glacier lagoon and into the Atlantic Ocean. The perfect combination tour, packed with fun activities and breathtaking sceneries.

This unforgettable climb has breathtaking panoramic views stretching over the rugged outlet glaciers of Vatnajökull glacier and over the vast sandy plains of the glaciated rivers below. No special technical skills are required but the hike is physically challenging. Hrútsfjallstindar Peaks 1875 m.Hrútsfjallstindar is the name of the impressive peaks dominating the skyline to the north of Svínafellsjökull glacier. The highest peak is 1875 m high (6150 feet) and the hike is equally demanding and well on par with the trip to the summit of Hvannadalshnúkur. The route offers magnificent scenery over the Öræfajökull massif as well as the Skaftafellsjökull and Svínafellsjökull glaciers. No special technical skills are required but the hike is physically challenging.
