Graduation Requirements
• Communication Arts – 4 credits
• Social Studies – 3 credits• Science – 2 credits• Math – 3 credits
– Algebra 1– Geometry– Advanced Algebra
• Health & Fitness – 2.5 credits
• Fine Arts – 1 credit
• Occupational/Vocational Education – 1 credit
• Career Education – 0.5 credit
• Culminating Project – 0.5• Electives – 5 credits• Pass Reading and
Writing HSPE tests• Pass one Math End of
Course Assessment.
4-Year College Entrance Requirements
• English – 4 credits• Math – 3 credits (minimum
of Algebra 1, Geometry, AND Adv Algebra), must take math based class senior year
• Social Studies – 3 credits
• Science – 2 credits lab science, one credit of Algebra based science (Chemistry or Physics)
• Fine Arts – 1 credit• World Languages – 2
credits of the same language
• ACT/SAT score
Credit Retrieval• GK Aventa Online Credit Retrieval
– $70 per 0.5 credit ($50 reduced lunch, $30 free lunch)– Communication Arts– Social Studies– Science
• GK ALEKS Math Credit Retrieval– $70 per 0.5 credit ($50 reduced lunch, $30 free lunch)– Algebra 1 through Pre-Calculus
• BYU Online– $132 per 0.5 credit– Core classes and elective classes.

Running Start• COMPASS/ASSET – $15 at Pierce
College; must score into college level reading & writing
• GK Course Selection Forms – check on Running Start line and choose GK courses for next year.
• Student Running Start Meeting – March 20, during study support in the auditorium
• Parent Running Start Meeting – March 21, 6:30 PM at GKHS
Advanced Placement
• AP students will take an AP test in May – approximately $90 AP test fee
• Interested students must read and sign the AP contract.
• Scores of 3,4, or 5 may earn college credit or waivers at college level
• AP is a predictor of completion of a 4-year college degree.
• Don’t take too many AP and/or challenging classes!
Pierce County Skills Center• Technical programs to earn college and high
school credit.• Aerospace Composites, Aerospace Machining/Fabrication, Automotive
Technology, Building Trades, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, DigiPen Video Game Development, DigiPen Robotics/Mechatronics, Environmental Explorations, Fire Science & Emergency Services, Hotel & Restaurant Management, Machining/Metal Fabrication, Medical Careers, PC Networking & Hardware Repair, Pre-Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, Pre-Veterinary Technology, Welding.
• Attend GK 3 class periods and attend PCSC 3 class periods.
• GK Course Selection Forms – check on PCSC line and choose GK courses for next year.
• PCSC applications are online
Course Description Book

• Courses are for entire school district. Use your GKHS Course Offerings List (pages 2 & 3 of course selection packet) for courses available to GKHS students.
12th Grade Courses
• Communication Arts 12 OR AP Literature & Composition
• Civics (one semester) OR AP US Government/Politics (all year)
• Mathematics
• Electives/Courses needed for graduation/college entrance
Fill Out the Form Correctly• Locker Request – Check the box and list your
locker partner to request a locker for next year.• Course Selection Forms are due in Careers by
March 1. Don’t forget a parent signature.• Sign the AP Contract if signing up for an AP
class.• Completed forms may be turned in to your
Careers teacher before March 1.• Counselors will choose courses for students who
have not turned in completed forms by March 1.
