Focus

Companions,

Palpable Distractions! Societal Challenges!

Every day we are faced with components of contemporary life that tend to divert our attention away from key values important to living a spiritually, physically and morally healthy life. In today's societal environment, we must remain grounded in support of our family obligations, devotion to our faith, attention to our health, and lastly our Masonic affiliations. These are all components of life that as Masons we should value and support. Our Masonic Craft Lodge degrees help to reinforce the importance of these components through our various obligations and lectures. These craft lodge teachings along with the lessons and values imparted within the various Royal Arch degrees, tend to keep us grounded on those things that we must maintain and value most in our lives. Unfortunately, with the constant distractions found in society today, from TV shows to computer games to the daily news media interruptions, it becomes a daily challenge to maintain focus on those things that must warrant our fullest attention.

To shield and/or channel our conduct as Capitular Masons against societal distractions, I have chosen the theme for this Capitular year as “FOCUS”. As this theme is broad in scope, an explanation is in order.

From a capitular perspective, there are several ways we can address the theme of “Focus”. However, it’s important to begin first by exploring the term “Focus”. Through an examination of the word and its definition, the details of the definition will provide us insight into this year’s Capitular theme.

Focus - fo·cus ˈfōkəs/. Is defined as - noun

1) The center of interest or activity.2) The state or quality of having or producing clear visual definition.

A center of activity, attraction, or attention; a point of concentration; directed attention: EMPHASIS; a state or condition permitting clear perception or understanding; adjustment for distinct vision, a point at which rays of light converge

Consequently, there are two words within the above definition that will help to further define this year’s theme; those words being “LIGHT” & “VISION”. Defined within the word LIGHT we find:

Light1 - /līt/ noun1) The natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible.2) Spiritual illumination

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”John 1:5 (Revised Standard Version)

2

Page 3: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

Equally important, is the word VISION – its definition below will help us provide direction to the chosen theme:

Vision. - vi·sion | \ ˈvi-zhən  \ noun1) The act or power of sensing with the eyes; sight.2) The act or power of anticipating that which will or may come to be:

“prophetic vision; the vision of an entrepreneur”3) An experience in which a personage, thing, or event appears vividly or credibly to the mind,

often under the influence of a divine agency:“a heavenly messenger appearing in a vision”

4) Something is seen or otherwise perceived during such an experience:“The vision revealed its message.”

5) A vivid, imaginative conception or anticipation:“visions of attainment and glory.

Contained within the theme of “Focus” we can extract two distinct sub-themes – Those being:“Focus your Light” and “Focus your Vision”

Focus your Light

You can choose to FOCUS your LIGHT in many different directions of personal and capitular enrichment. As Capitular Masons, I believe that when you “FOCUS your LIGHT” your attention rightfully, should be directed in two distinctly different but inter-related areas of importance within our daily lives; those of the Internal Mason, and of the External Mason.

We should all look to the value of the Internal Mason – as the Spiritual preparation for your life beyond your physical existence. Ways in which we can internally Focus our Light is through:

- Devotions to the God of your choosing and thanking the Supreme Being for all of the riches he has chosen to bestow upon your existence

- Contemplating and improving your ability to love your enemy and to forgive their offenses. Personal growth in your ability for patience and understanding.

- By striving to be a better person and doing the "right thing" through compassion and tolerance in all you do – by letting your light of Masonry shine brightly and in being an example of a good for all men.

- Pursuing Masonic Education and Individual Growth through a deeper understanding of the Values and biblical lessons expressed within our Rituals, - Examine how we can Practice, Maintain and Live these teachings – Mentoring others and helping them understand the lessons and values of our degrees.

Focus directed toward the Internal Mason is an area of individual commitment and can best be attained through personal devotion to God and conscientious dedication toward comprehending and living the lessons and values expressed in the Great Light and all of our masonic degrees.

However, directing your light with the FOCUS toward the External Mason can be expressed differently when viewing our conduct as Men, Masons, and especially as Royal Arch Masons. Focus in this direction can become more individually fulfilling. We can all become an example for society as the outward-facing example of Masonry and how all men should conduct themselves.

3

Page 4: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

Adhering to the core principles of Masonry helps us to focus our external-facing Masonic light;

- Brotherly Love – Care and Compassion for all men – Treating others as you would have them treat you. This relates to respecting the opinions and beliefs of others

- Relief - Our Philanthropies / Charities – Caring for others without material injury to yourself or your family. This relates to the removal or reduction of oppressive, painful, or distressing conditions

- Truth – High Moral Standards – Strive for Truth and endeavor to uphold Masonic principles in both our public and private lives. This relates to the Integrity of our Conduct as Men & Masons

Focusing on the External Mason is an area where collectively we can all support each other and make advancements toward the full enrichment of life for all mankind.

“If you see a Brother standing by the road, with a heavy load from the seeds he’s sowed, and if you see your sister falling by the way, just stop and say, you’re going the wrong way.”

“You got to try a little kindness, yes show a little kindness, just shine your light for everyone to see. And If you try a little kindness, then you’ll overlook the blindness of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets.”

Lyrics and Music by Curt Sapaugh and Bobby AustinPerformed by Glen Campbell

Companions, what we as Royal Arch Masons should aspire to do, is to bring into clear focus how each of us, collectively, and individually can Focus your Light. This can be accomplished by adhering to the lessons and values of our order. Concentrated attention and commitment to these lessons and teachings of our order, will also aid us in the construction of our internal temple. When you Focus your light, the two paths within are symbiotic. When the focus is directed toward the internal Mason your external conduct as a mason becomes enriched and evident. The alternative direction, that of a focus on our external conduct, will help you build upon your spiritual temple. You will find that by focusing on these two areas, your efforts will become the basic working tools that can be used in improving the lives of all mankind.

Focus your Vision

Also, within the theme of Focus, we have the option of transitioning away from light and instead, you can choose to FOCUS your VISION on those aspects of Royal Arch Masonry that will have a tangible and positive effect on the existence of our fraternal organization.

“20/20 Vision allows us to Focus Clearly”

Another application of this year’s theme would be to Focus your Vision in the direction of strategic planning and positioning our Chapters for the future growth and development within our Fraternity. Actionable components such as improved Chapter Management, the incorporation of technological tools into our chapters, and enhanced membership development techniques are just a few of those

Vision components. There are any number of actions that we can employ to advance our continued capitular existence

For your consideration, I would like all of us to endeavor to focus on the future of our fraternity and how your skills, whether they be technical or administrative, can advance the success of our fraternity for future generations.

The Future Vision of Royal Arch Masonry - FOCUS on utilizing available technological tools to advance Capitular Masonry in Ohio- FOCUS on providing enhanced communication with all companions - FOCUS on educating and providing a more meaningful experience for all of our companions utilizing

current digital technologies as a teaching aid- FOCUS on the sound fiscal management of all Capitular bodies- FOCUS on candidate recruitment, inclusion, member engagement and satisfaction- LISTEN to and Incorporate new and innovative ideas while maintaining and respecting our Masonic

traditions and heritage. As Royal Arch Masons when you Focus your Light you are:

- Like the Lighthouse – Illuminating a path for others to follow by directing them toward safer paths in life; use your internal light to be a mentor and an example of masonry.

- Like the Laser – Help others cut through difficulties and challenges - the challenges that everyone will face at some time in life – this can be applied both spiritually and secularly

- As the Theatrical Follow-spot – you can be a light that brightens the values that all men should turn their focus toward. In this way, you can illuminate and focus your shining light on the values and good works of Capitular Masonry

GHP Requests and Interests

Charity Challenge - OMH Memory Care Compassionate Care Education

We, as Masons, have a mission to assist our Brothers in need and The Grand Chapter has a rich history of meeting that mission with our role in establishing the Ohio Masonic Home.

To build upon this history, I am challenging each companion and Royal Arch Chapter to make either a monetary donation to the Ohio Masonic Home Foundation or organize a fund-raising project/event in support of Compassionate Care Education within the services provided by our three OMH Memory Care Centers.

Skills gained from Compassionate Care education provided to all caregivers, whether they are institutional, or home-based, and associated with our Masonic Home Memory Care Centers, is a skill that will benefit every person impacted by memory care issues. I’m requesting every chapter to consider donating to the Ohio Masonic Home – “Memory Care Center, Compassionate Care Program”, during the 2020-2021 capitular year.

Having in-laws that have been directly impacted with special care needs through a licensed Memory Care Facility, I’m especially committed to assisting the Ohio Masonic Home with this fund-raising endeavor. Please consider engaging in this challenge and if it’s within your means or the means of your Chapter, I would personally consider your support of this challenge a Great Honor.

Open Door PolicyI will have an open-door policy for any companion wishing to discuss ways of building upon the structure and advancement of capitular masonry. Details for contacting me are posted in a different section of this document.

Exposition of the Great LightI’m certain none of us would ever think of intentionally disrespect the flag of this great nation. It’s unconscionable to think of turning our back on the flag during the pledge of allegiance or to carry on a conversation during the presentation of colors at any one of our meetings. Standing at attention, saluting or placing your hand over your heart, and ceasing all conversation is the standard of proper respect when reciting the Pledge of allegiance. I find it extremely important that we as Masons also exhibit proper respect during the exposition of the Great Light (Holy Scriptures).

Just like we show respect to the flag of this Great Nation, I believe that we all need to exhibit proper respect for the Great Light. I respectfully request that at all convocations of your chapter (and Mark Lodges) that the High Priest reminds the companions to cease all conversation when the Great Light is being opened and closed. I also ask that the Royal Arch Captain (Junior Deacon in a Mark Lodge) wait to announce the opening (or closing) of the Chapter until after the Principal Sojourner (Senior Deacon in a Mark Lodge) has completed his duties at the alter and has returned to his station. During all visits to their assigned chapters, in addition to the annual inspections of those chapters, I would like to request that all DDGHP’s pay particular attention to this procedure.

Visitations by the Grand High Priest

Please keep in mind that even though I may have the title of Grand High Priest I’m first and foremost a Companion, just like you. It is my hope to be elected by all of you and if so, I will work to serve all of Capitular Masonry to the best of my ability. When I visit a Chapter, my purpose is not to judge or intimidate the companions, but instead, I'm coming to show support to your officers and to enjoy fellowship with your companions. It’s also my personal goal to offer leadership and show support to your District, Chapter officers, and your companions for the work you all do in support of Capitular Masonry.

I expect to attend at least two inspections in each of the fifteen districts. I will also make every effort possible to attend some district functions as well as every district Grand High Priest Reception. I have asked the Grand Officers for my year to not only visit chapter inspection in their regions but to also attend regular stated meetings of the chapters within their region. Additional visits by the Grand High Priest to your district for regular stated meetings may also occur, and in most cases will be unannounced.

Let’s Have Some FunI’m still a Royal Arch Companion just like the rest of you. Fancy titles and badges of office are less important to me than living the values of capitular masonry.

6

Page 7: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

I believe our lives can be very stressful which is why I believe we need to laugh and enjoy life when we can. Let’s all have fun and enjoy each other’s fellowship. Friendship and laughter are good for the soul (and a good beer or glass of wine (in moderation) doesn’t hurt either).

Continuing the initiative set by MEC Shaw, I plan to introduce and promote social outing for companions around the state. If you have an event idea or suggested location where we can all enjoy a good meal and some fellowship, please contact me. These social events are for Companions, Families, and Friends and we’ll not burden you or your guest with any unnecessary speeches or introductions.

Problems and ResolutionIf you have a problem or issue regarding a policy established within the Grand Chapter Code or a procedural problem regarding the management of your chapter, I prefer that you follow the established procedural chain of command. Initiate your communication chain by contacting your DDGHP. If after polite and respectful discourse you feel he is not addressing the issue to your satisfaction, then contact your District Advisor (if available). Again, if you feel the issue is not being addressed adequately you may then politely escalate and respectfully communicate your issue to the Regional Officer. As a final course of action if, after presenting the issue to those within the chain of command you do not feel a reasonable resolution has been accomplished, feel free to contact me. I will then consult with your deputy and regional officer in a concerted effort to address the issue.

What’s New This Year

New Appointment - District Technology Officers In the Capitular Year 2020-21, we expect to appoint District Technology Officers – their responsibility will be to Conduct training and support to all interested companions on the use of the computer, tablet, smartphone or any other type of technology that can advance Capitular masonry. These companions will also be responsible for working with any interested secretaries and Capitular officers on improving the methods of utilizing current technological tools with their Chapters.

I believe that the time is upon us to begin working with our District officers, secretaries and interested companions throughout the state in helping them understand how these tools can better benefit the communication and record-keeping functions of each chapter. This newly instituted DTO position will function under the leadership and direction of the Technology Committee Chairman in coordination with the Membership Development, Communication, and Education Committee Chairmen. All interested companions are encouraged to inquire as to how they can help by becoming a DTO.

New Appointment - District Membership Ambassadors

It is the interest of the Grand Chapter to institute a District Membership Ambassador Program throughout the State. This position will build upon the initiative started by MEC Jeff Shaw. The primary responsibility will be to introduce the values of Royal Arch Masonry to interested Brethren of Craft Lodges resident within their capitular district. It’s recommended that this initiative be undertaken with the assistance of the LEO and the Worshipful Master of the district Lodges. The 7

Page 8: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

targeted intent is to introduce the values of our Royal Arch degrees during lodge education programs. Utilizing an educational approach of Royal Arch Masonry to eligible Master Masons, we can augment our recruitment efforts. By providing the Brethren with an understanding of the values of Royal Arch Masonry we can attract brethren from lodges not currently associated with a Royal Arch Chapter. By introducing brethren to an understanding of the values of our degrees, the expectation is that they will seek out a Companion for more information and a petition. This self-motivating interest in Royal Arch Masonry, utilizing the values and lessons found in our Capitular degrees, will produce a companion that will want to be engaged and will want to become involved in our chapters. The DMA’s will function under the leadership and direction of the Membership Development Committee Chairman.

New Committee - Under 45 Advisory Committee

This committee is being designed to identify and interact with those companions that are and will be the future of this Capitular body. These younger companions sometimes have a unique and somewhat different perspective on how we can enhance the relevance of our fraternity to the younger working companion today. “Different” is not necessarily a negative element when looking at how we can attract and engage younger companions into Royal Arch Masonry. As long as the lessons and values of Royal Arch Masonry are maintained and supported, we owe it to this fraternity to listen and respect the opinions of these younger companions. The bottom line should be, “Respect the Past and be Relevant in the Future”. “If we continue to do what we’ve been doing we will continue to get what we’ve been getting”. This committee is advisory in scope and will work in conjunction with the Strategic Development Committee. The chairman of this committee will provide a comprehensive report of meetings and findings to the Long-Range Planning Committee. All interested companions under the age of 45 (give or take a few years) are encouraged to inquire with their District Deputy as to how they can get involved.

District Advisors – Reconstituted

After speaking with select Deputies and Grand Officers I have decided to reconstitute and assign District Advisors in each interested district. All assigned DA’s will be Past District Deputy Grand High Priests and will function in an advisory capacity (only). They will be a knowledgeable resource and act as an advisor for the current Deputies in the fulfillment of their duties. It must be well understood that the District Deputy Grand High Priest answers only to the Grand High Priest and not the district advisor. If some questions or issues arise that the advisor is unable to assist with, either he or the DDGHP is encouraged to contact the regional officer or the GHP directly.

In some districts, the District Advisor would have the option to serve as a mentor to DEO’s with the expectation that at some point in the future they may be elevated to the office of District Deputy Grand High Priest. This mentorship function of District Advisors will help to direct and answer any questions that the DEO may have as he fulfills his current position. The District Advisor may also be asked by the current DDGHP to offer his assessments of the DEO’s performance and leadership potential. This evaluation process would provide the district leadership a guide to the DEO’s readiness for a more advanced level of leadership.

New Activity - 2021 Visit to the Grand Session of British Columbia

Companions, it’s my hope and expectation to organize a trip to attend the Grand Session of British Columbia and Yukon in September of 2021. This is a Royal Arch Jurisdiction that I’ve visited over

8

Page 9: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

the past few years and personally believe you all would enjoy the fellowship that these Royal Arch Companions from another jurisdiction and country have to offer. More information will be forthcoming as plans are finalized.

New Activity - Holiday Visit to the OMH and Dine with Residents

Companions, as Masons are taught to treat others as we would have them treat us. “He who is last shall become first.” This year I hope to treat those of us that are sometimes forgotten over the holiday season, to make them first among us. I expect to organize a trip to one of the three Masonic Homes to share fellowship and holiday cheer with the residents. As families move away or get busy with their own lives, occasionally one of these residents may be neglected, forgotten or overlooked. It’s my experience that some of these residents would welcome and greatly appreciate casual conversation and fellowship over a holiday meal. Additional information regarding a visit to one of our homes will be forthcoming as plans are finalized.

Guidelines for High Priests

Leadership and Management

To assist the High Priest and his officer's plan for a successful year, the Grand Chapter has constructed many leadership and management tool and made them available for their disposal.

The Chapter Management Manual provides the presiding officer great tips on how to run a meeting, conduct introductions and create various Educational and Membership Development programs.

A study of The Manual of Suggestions for Chapter Officers will help all of the officers, elected or appointed, perform their duties more efficiently.

The Ritual and Grand Chapter Code provide rules and guidelines on proper procedures and what operational details are permitted and restricted in the course of conferring degrees or in running your chapter.

Leadership and commitment are paramount to the success of our Chapters. Without effective leadership, our chapters would appear disorganized and haphazard in its conferral of the degrees and in conducting the business proceedings. Chapters without quality leadership will lose members and fail to attract new candidates. While some individuals seem to be born with great leadership abilities, I believe that leaders are made, not born; some just learn leadership skills earlier and differently.

You could spend many, many hours and dollars on leadership training … or you could use the tools available to make your year successful. The “Chapter Management Manual” and “Manual of Suggestions for Chapter Officers” give great tips on how to run a meeting, conduct introductions, and programs. READ & REVIEW OFTEN. Do not be afraid to think “outside the box” to make your year a very successful one.

I believe the core foundation of leadership is the use of good time management techniques. Good time management can make planning and the execution of your plans easier and successful. For this reason, every High Priest should have a written agenda prepared for each meeting. A recommended

agenda for stated meetings is at the end of this booklet and will be placed on the Grand Chapter Website. This agenda template will allow you to execute your plan and if diligent attention is given to following your agenda you’re less likely to forget anyone or anything. It will also help to make the meeting more effective and efficient. This means getting more things done, possibly in a shorter timeframe.

Simple & Practical Time Management Tips

Organization and PlanningThere is no substitute for sharing ideas with someone and asking for feedback

Setting clear goalsGoals should be realistic & achievableBreak your goals/tasks down into manageable stepsWork on one goal/task at a time Review your progressRevise plans as necessaryMap several alternative routes toward achieving your goal – What if planningHave a contingency plan

PrioritizingAttend to urgent and important tasks first, not the easiest tasks Efficiency and Effectiveness are not the same Effective managers focus on the important tasks

List MakingCreate a “To Do” list – this helps you stay focused on the task at handHave a pen and paper (or smartphone with a digital notepad) with you all the time 3 x 5 cards are cheap and easily fit in your pocket

Avoiding ProcrastinationThe best time to tackle a project is usually NOW Organize your work to meet deadlines - Reward yourself for achieving goals

PerseveringDon’t give up when things don’t go right Review what happened and check your contingency plans

Personal Responsibilities

Unfortunately, for some reason, many chapters have become nothing more than dues collectors. I have served as a secretary in my chapter, and I have found that being a dues collector is no fun. A good percentage of those that are not paying dues have the means to pay, but just won't for any number of reasons. They also will ignore all attempts to contact them.

However, if a companion can realize the value of being a member of a chapter, they would cheerfully pay their dues. That’s called a “Return on Investment”. Consequently, we need to strive to help new members feel that they are Invested, Welcomed and included in the Chapter. It should be your goal and the goal of all of your officers to instilled in all companions the belief that he/they are important to the future of HIS chapter. Let them all know that you will openly welcome his engagement in all activities. Every companion, young and old, new or tenured should be instilled with the belief that they are valued. For long service companions, the feel of ownership and inclusion is all he may desire to continue to contribute to the existence of his chapter. These simple tasks might be all that’s necessary for any companion to maintain and continue with his contribution and financial support of his chapter.

Ritual Work

Ritual Basics

Ritual work should not be thought of as laborious or as a needless exercise in the theatrics that must be endured to fulfill the code requirements. All ritual work should be viewed as an opportunity to impress the candidates and prove to them that the values of being a Royal Arch Masons are one of the highlights of their masonic journey.

I believe that ritual work is not only an excellent way to help a brother receive more Light but to also improve ourselves and our conduct as moral men. Working on ritual has helped me in my personal growth in several ways. It's helped me improve my memory skills, helped me with the development of my public speaking skills, increased my knowledge of the values imparted in the four degrees, increased my vocabulary, and given me a greater feeling of personal accomplishment. Besides, ritual work should be viewed as an opportunity to fulfill the pledge that all Masons have made … to “improve myself in Masonry.” There are many tips on ritual work found in the Chapter Management Manual, however, I believe each Companion needs to find whatever ritualistic exercise works best for themselves.

Ritualistic Suggestion: Give yourself enough time to learn your speaking part and practice your dramatic effect. I start 6 to 9 months in advance when asked to memorize large or difficult parts. Breaking the part down into smaller, manageable portions can also make it easier to learn.

Planning your Ritual Work

A High Priest should have a thorough understanding of the parts that need to be filled within each of the degrees. There are no small parts! Some parts have fewer lines than others but are no less important to the overall conferral of the degree. Every part is important or it would not be in the ritual – please pay special attention to the footnotes found in the ritual. Details of every part should be attended to and practiced not just the major parts that require the memorization of many lines. There should be at least one full dress rehearsal a few days before the conferral of the degree to help everyone understand their role in the degree. Also, each degree should have a knowledgeable degree director to assist with the rehearsal.

Degree Conferral

Degree work is an extremely important part of Masonry. We should all strive to be highly proficient in everything we do. Yet at times, failure occasionally happens. Preparation is the key to avoiding failure and embarrassment. We may have been told at times, impressing the candidate is the most important part of conferring ritual work. However, as the candidate is the most important person to impress, there is one other who is equally important to impress: yourself! This does not mean that you should pat yourself on the back for doing your part well. However, if you help everyone prepare for the degree, fully understanding the part you are about to deliver, do the best job possible, the rest will fall into place and that in itself will impress all involved, including yourself.

12

Degree Cast List

I am asking that each Chapter use the Degree Worksheets found on the Grand Chapter Web Site (Form CH-23) to identify where their degree casts may have vacancies. This simple tool will also assist the degree director in developing and mentoring companions for future ritualistic work. These companions should be members of your chapter, not a companion from a neighboring chapter that would normally assist your chapter fill vacancies in the degree cast.

I would prefer to see each Chapter confer each degree with their companions. If they do not have a companion that is currently filling a part, it's advisable to request a proficient companion from another chapter to volunteer. At the same time please work to identify a companion from your chapter to begin learning the part for future conferrals of the degree. This can be used to get Companions other than officers engaged in degree work and possibly give that same companion a reason to start attending again.

I am certain this will be a work in progress as some parts are larger and will take a long time to learn. I am not expecting that every Chapter will immediately have all parts covered by its members. However, we need to begin somewhere in rebuilding and maintaining the Chapter's ritual abilities…and I believe this is as good a place to start as any.

I’m asking all DDGHPs to review the completed Degree Cast worksheets and include a copy in the annual inspection report.

Conferrals of Capitular Degrees

Masons always want to do their best during inspections. As inspections are important, competently conferring degree work during other times of the year is equally important. Just because the Candidate isn't receiving the degree at an inspection does not make his degree experience any less important. Degree work should always be inspection ready and every Candidate should receive the Best Degree Possible.

Degree Extras

Costumes and makeup make a degree look professional, however, some Chapters my not have the talent or funds for such a production. How the degree work is presented, the proficiency of the cast and the dramatic effect employed by each cast member is the most important and impressive part of the degree. I have seen Degrees conferred with cast members in clean modern clothing, formal wear, or Red Blazers. Degrees conferred in this manner were no less enjoyable or impressive. It is the attitude of the actor and the proficiency of the cast that can make or break a degree conferral.

Please remember that we confer degrees to impress upon the mind of the candidate the importance and understanding of the values that each degree is intended to impart. A better understanding of the messages and values found within the degrees will help to make him a better man and Mason. Costumes don’t accomplish this alone. It’s the proficiency of the cast that makes the degree impressive. Proficiency can only be accomplished through practice and dedication.

Annual Inspection

Inspection Requirements

Inspections are an important part of a Chapter’s year because it reaffirms the commitment that was made when their Charter was applied for; to conduct the business of the Chapter by following Grand Chapter Code and show proficiency and conformance in ritual.

We are all aware that some Chapters struggle with attendance and member engagement. This is an unfortunate reality and a situation that the Grand Officers are working to address. One solution that was presented last year was to allow a chapter in need of extra assistance, to select an inspection degree they feel can be best performed with 80% of their members. The Grand Officers have all agreed to permit a struggling chapter to break from the standard protocol of progressing through the inspection degrees and permit them to select the degree of their choice for a three year period. There is currently a stipulation that they confer the inspection degree with 80% of their members, while at the same time they work toward developing proficiency in a second degree. As a caveat to the stipulation, I'm asking the inspection officer to return to the chapter that chooses the above-mentioned inspection option and observe either the MEM or RA degree conferred with no less than 50% of their members. This is not going to be part of the inspection process but will simply verify for compliance's sake that the degree conferral can be conducted proficiently with the aid and assistance from other chapters.

As we confer our capitular degrees at our inspections, several things should be kept in mind:

1) Local tradition is to prevail when not in violation of the ritual or code.2) The degree is to be conferred by the best team and ritualist that the chapter can assemble.3) The business should be kept to a minimum the night of inspection.4) No CEO or DEO educational program is to be presented at inspection.5) The candidate should NEVER be asked for remarks. He may be thanked for being a good

candidate but that is all.6) After the inspecting officer is finished with his remarks, the chapter is to be closed

immediately, without further comment. Should the High Priest desire he may ask the District Deputy to close. The Deputy may do so at his discretion

This year I am requesting: The High Priest should provide the Deputy with an agenda and cast list for the degree on the

inspection day. Please Do Not confuse this with the Degree Cast worksheets. The High Priest is expected and should be prepared to Open and Close the Inspection degree. A hard copy of the meeting agenda should be used and followed to keep from overlooking

important components of the meeting and to help keep the meeting moving forward without delay.

The High Priest’s Inspection Agenda can be found at the end of this booklet and will be on the Grand Chapter’s website in the “Forms” section.

Chapter Officers will need to open and close their Chapter in their Inspection Degree on the night of their inspection. They will also be required to open and close in the Royal Arch Degree at some time during the capitular year to the satisfaction of the DDGHP.

Introductions

Titles/Introductions

“A Manual of Suggestions for Chapter Officers” has a section on Titles that should be reviewed each year so that all new officers and members are familiar with them. It is expected that when introducing or addressing a Companion during a meeting, it should be done correctly.

Example: E.C. John Smith or E.C. Smith would be correct. E.C. John IS NOT CORRECT.

Introductions and Honors

Use the correct titles when introducing companions, especially with those companions that have received the ECG-DSA and KYCH. Also, those who have served or are currently serving in the Military should be recognized. They should be asked to stand at their seats and if in a tiled lodge or chapter, will be offered Grand Honors. Also, 50-year Companions are eligible to receive Grand Honors and should be introduced standing at their seats (if able). If possible, make the introductions with the Candidates and new Companions present and in the lodge room, even if it follows the conferral of the degree. Local or regional routines are acceptable if not redundant

Unless it’s a Chapters tradition, I would prefer that companions eligible for introductions be encouraged to stay in the room for introductions. Asking Companions to leave the room has the potential to delay the timing of the meeting’s agenda and could, if not properly organized, make things appear chaotic and unorganized. As an option, groups receiving introductions may be asked to present themselves west of the altar for recognition. If a Chapter or District believes that this contemporary approach would ruin their meeting if “it is not done the old way”, I’ll respect their preference and will avoid imposing my perspective on introductions. It’s only my personal preference that all Companions just stay in the room for introductions.

At inspections, introductions will be handled according to district protocol. I respectfully request that any individual companion be introduced with no more than a maximum of three titles. Individual companions should be introduced with one of the following titles:

CompanionExcellent Companion

Right Excellent CompanionMost Excellent Companion

If the individual has another title in an affiliated Masonic body such as Right Worshipful Master and he is a Companion, he should be introduced as (Capitular Salutation) (Name) (past or present office – if any)(other Masonic recognitions). For example Right Excellent Companion, John E. Holback, PDDGHP, PDDGM, KYCH, 33rd Degree AASRNMJ. The highest capitular title attained will be given first followed by the other Masonic body’s title.

Education

The Grand Chapter Education Programs, including the Capitular Resource Courses, Capitular Development Course and Royal Arch Schools of instruction are excellent sources of information for expanding a companion’s knowledge of the values found within the Royal Arch degrees. Educational talks and presentations should be included at your Chapter and District meetings. However, an educational program should not be given at an inspection. Referencing the tools available from the Grand Chapter Committee on Masonic Education and following their recommendations on programs and presentations are strongly urged.

"The chisel" reference in the Mark Master gives more credence to the role of Education in our duty to God and Mankind. Presenting the "Peculiar Stone" as well as utilizing resources available through the York Rite College will help to heighten the awareness of the values and teachings of our degrees to Master Masons not yet exalted.

Utilizing the numerous Grand Chapter resources as a starting point for developing education programs presented at stated meetings are also strongly encouraged. Group discussions that involve everyone in attendance often work better than a static lecture alone.

DEO's and CEO's are strongly encouraged to use any available resources along with other materials relevant to our teachings at Chapter and District events. Also, these materials and information are to be considered for sharing in public and at other Symbolic Lodge meetings. Consider organizing joint educational sessions in conjunction with Blue Lodge Education Nights, Knight Mason meetings, Allied Masonic Degree meetings, as well as Cryptic and Chivalric activities.

In his new role as the Chairman of the Education Committee, R.E.C. Dan Cogley and his committee members will continue to assemble some of the best education programs in all of Capitular Masonry. 17

Remember that all the newly exalted Companions are very important, and should be strongly encouraged to learn what it means to be a Royal Arch Mason.

Resource Courses I And II

The Capitular Resource Course on masonic education is a Chapter Management learning tool and part of the education program. I strongly encourage every DDGHP, DEO, and elected or appointed officer of each chapter to take this valuable and instructive course. Even companions with no interest in assuming an officer’s stations should be encouraged and welcomed to take this course. Even though the Capitular Resource Course is categorized as an educational tool, its actual application is more of a leadership development exercise and survey. The resource course covers leadership information found within the Grand Chapter Code, The Chapter Management Manual, your chapters Bylaws and the Manual of Suggestions for officers.

The Resource Courses may be found on the Ohio Royal Arch Website: WWW.Ohioram.Org

Additional Educational tools

Royal Arch School of Instruction - shall be organized by District and/or Region. One purpose of the Royal Arch School is to provide educational opportunities for all Royal Arch Masons to gain an increased appreciation for the Chapter Degrees and a sense of their historical worth in the general scheme of Freemasonry. Another purpose of the Royal Arch School is to provide the basic training for potential teachers of Masonic subjects and materials.

Capitular Development Course – The Ohio version of this book will be available for purchase sometime in 2020. This book was developed in New York and is being edited for use in Ohio. This educational tool could be used as a self-directed learning guide or could be utilized by DEO’s or DEO’s for group learning and discussions. More information will be presented when the book is available.

Ritual Schools of Instructions – The Ritual Committee in coordination with the Education Committee are making plans to introduce ritual schools of instructions in regional areas around the state. It's expected that this learning experience will cover specific points within each degree that are frequently overlooked. We hope to have the full written version of the ritual should be available at every school in an effort to address any questions about words and instructions that are cyphered in the ritual. At this time, we are looking at holding 4 to 5 Ritual Schools of Instruction in specific geographic regions in Ohio

Membership Development

Membership Development is more than acquiring petitions and exalting new members. It’s about how we treat the candidate and instill in him the feeling of being welcomed and accepted among companions. It’s also about how we treat each other as Brothers and Companions. Your Chapters membership initiatives should make every effort to use the Grand Chapter Membership Committee recommendations and programs to help generate interest in your chapter. The membership

18

Page 19: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

committee also needs to reach out to the present Members by inspiring and encouraging their presence and involvement in your chapter’s programs. Utilizing the educational programs available in addition to generating interactive social programs with Master Masons will work towards generating greater interest in your chapter – don’t forget to include the public when appropriate.

Building upon MEC Shaw’s membership initiative, we expect to elevate district membership coordinators to Membership Ambassadors. These Companions will become the conduit that will help to build relations between the Craft Lodges and all Royal Arch Chapters (including Mark Lodges), within your district.

Consider working closely with your Symbolic Lodges and welcoming them to work with you on our civic and philanthropic endeavors. Request from the Master the opportunity to put on the Peculiar Stone skit. You could also request a notice from the lodge secretary of any degree conferrals that are scheduled to take place. Plan to attend wearing your Red Jacket. After the degree, request the opportunity to present some small token of congratulations on behalf of your district's Royal Arch Chapters (avoid at all costs, talking about petitioning a Royal Arch Chapter). Presenting the candidate with a small masonic gift on behalf of Ohio Royal Arch Masons will make a lasting and positive impression of Royal Arch Masons.

Don’t forget to offer the companions of your chapter the opportunity to enroll in the Endowed Membership program. This program will continue to provide financial benefit to your chapter long after the member is free of his earthly bonds.

For the Good of your Chapter

Management and Leadership Tips

To make your year a very successful one, don’t be afraid to think “outside the box”. If you have any questions on the proper procedure to follow, it’s suggested that you contact your District Deputy Grand High Priest or Regional Officer.

Representation at Grand Chapter

Per the Grand Chapter Code, each Chapter is required to be represented at Grand Chapter, by the High Priest, King, and Scribe or their Proxy. While it is not always possible for all of the top three officers to attend, there isn't any reason that a Chapter would not be represented at Grand Chapter. A Past High Priest can also represent that Chapter by carrying the signed proxy of one of the three top officers.

The Charter of a Royal Arch Chapter

By adhering to the rules outlined in the Grand Chapter Code, along with specific ritual requirements, a Chapter in compliance will earn the right to a Charter permitting them to operate as a Royal Arch Chapter. The Charter is not a birthright and there are certain requirements to keep it maintained. Please Read Your Code carefully!

Requesting a Dispensation

19

Page 20: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

A Dispensation is required when your Chapter desires to undertake an activity or institute a temporary change that deviates from the Grand Chapter Code. If you should ever have any questions, please contact your District Deputy Grand High Priest. He should be able to provide you with an answer to your question.

Initiate the dispensation by Submitting the written request, (the form can be found on the Grand Chapter Web Site) to your Deputy (Please do not send the completed form to the Grand Secretary). The District Deputy Grand High Priest, in turn, will forward your completed form to the Chairman of Jurisprudence who, after review, will then send it on to the Grand High Priest for approval. Please allow at least 30 days before the event for processing. If it’s an emergency, call your Deputy first. If you choose to contact the GHP directly, out of respect to your deputy, the Grand High Priest will simply refer you back to your District Deputy.

Consolidation’s or Mergers I hope that no chapter ever finds itself in a position of closing or merging with another chapter. When a chapter faces the prospect of closing or merging I strongly encourage all chapter officers involved to consult with their DDGHP and Regional Officer to examine all available alternatives to their pending situation. I will also personally offer my assistance in helping to find a means of avoiding the closure or merger process. All I ask is that the officers of the chapter and district keep in mind the impact their action might have on all of the companions in the chapter, not just the few that choose to attend meetings. If a merger is determined to be the only remaining option, please follow closely the procedure detailed below.

31.01. Procedure. Whenever the majority of the members resident within the jurisdiction of any chapter shall sign a written declaration that they deem it for the best interest of Capitular Masonry to consolidate said chapter with another specified chapter and shall present the same at a stated convocation of their chapter. The High Priest shall thereupon cause the same to be read in open chapter, to be entered on its records and a written notice of such proposed consolidation to be mailed to all members, to the Grand High Priest, to the District Deputy Grand High Priest, to the Regional Officer assigned to that Chapter, To the Chairman of the Committee on Charters and Dispensations, and the Grand Secretary.

(Amended October 3, 1996)

Future Status of all Districts

As Grand High Priest (if elected), I WILL NOT open/close or render active/inactive any existing districts. The Grand Officers are currently constructing the protocol and a document that will detail the justifications and procedures necessary that district officers will be required to follow before any district is rendered active/inactive. Without a statewide strategic plan and, documented justifications are in place, no additional districts will be closed or rendered inactive within the 2020-2021 capitular year.

Outside Activities

Chapter companions and their ladies can and should participate in outside activities. This could be in the form of a dinner outing, a cultural activity or a community service project. If planned properly, these activities could be of little or no cost to the Chapter. When you do have an activity,

20

Page 21: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

please get the notice out to the members promptly. Don't forget to send the notice to the Grand Chapter WebMaster for placement on the Grand Chapter Calendar.

As Capitular Masonry is a multi-generational fraternal organization, it's advised that you not only use E-Mail but announce the activity in newsletters, make phone calls, use your chapters Web site, posts on Twitter and/or Facebook and include other social media outlets as well. These are all great ways to get out the word. The use of multiple communication tools will only help to increase participation, engagement, and attendance for your activity.

Youth Groups

It has been said that our Youth groups, Rainbow, Jobs Daughters, and DeMolay are our future. However, when you think about it, we are their future as well. We should all strive to be role models and mentors to these young people. If not, we could potentially leave a negative impression in the mind of a young person. That impression may only last for a few moments but might also last a lifetime. Kind words go much farther than criticism. If possible, ask the members of the Youth Groups in your area to make a presentation at your Chapter so that all Companions can become familiar with what the groups do and who the members are. Remember, “the light we show today may blossom into a torch seen by many tomorrow”.

It is my sincere desire that each chapter, in a show of support, visit with one of the youth groups at a stated meeting or event. By doing this you are letting the youth know that your chapter is willing to help support them in their endeavors, not just through financial donations. Capitular Masons should be supportive and actively engaged both in time and talent with our Masonic Youth Groups. Consider serving as mentors and becoming that resource and guiding light in their masonic lives.

District Functions and Festivals

When a district has a function, all of the elected officers along with other companions of your chapter should be represented. A lot of time and hard work has been put into organizing these activities, and every effort should be made to show your support. This is especially true at all district education activities and programs

I believe Festivals or reunions serve a useful purpose for those candidates that have specific time constraints. This is one way to help candidates receive and become educated in the lessons and values exemplified in the capitular degrees. It’s also a means of finishing the conferral of degrees on candidates before the end of the capitular year. If you have a Festival, make sure that each part is filled by a companion that is proficient in the assigned part and will do the best job possible for the candidates.

Because it takes a considerable amount of time to confer the four capitular degrees there is no acceptable excuse for permitting short-cuts and sloppy work for the sake of “saving time”. If you believe taking short-cuts is an acceptable excuse for saving time – it’s not! All you are accomplishing is diminishing and taking away the values of the degree from the candidate. Besides, having a Festival does not mean a Chapter isn’t required to fulfill the code obligation concerning conferral of degrees. Remember, each Chapter is required to confer/perform each of the four degrees at least once per year.

Because the Royal Arch Degree is the culmination of the Craft Lodge degrees, I believe the completion of the Royal Arch Degree should be a cause for celebration and special recognition. I’d like to suggest that at the close of the Royal Arch Degree plans are made for a special celebratory banquet dinner. At the banquet, each newly exalted Companion should be honored as having received the real word, the Long-Lost Secret of a Master Mason.

Charities

“Masons care for those who cannot care for themselves”,

Companions, the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio has and supports two exceptional charities; The Ohio Masonic Home and Royal Arch Foundation. Both are wonderful philanthropic causes, and both deserve our support.

The Ohio Masonic HomeI believe charity starts at HOME and we have a rare and precious jewel in OUR Masonic Homes. These Masonic Homes speak to our Masonic Obligation of caring for those who can no longer take care of themselves. After a full and exhausting life, the one thing every person hopes for is compassion and the comfort of living out their lives in a clean and safe environment. The Masonic Homes offer exactly that for Masons and their loved ones. It takes considerable resources to keep OUR Masonic Homes operating. The Masonic Homes has three locations in Ohio: Springfield, Waterville, and Medina, each offering care for masons and their spouses. Through financial donations and volunteering your assistance and participation in one of the many events sponsored by the Ohio Masonic Homes, those vital resources can be realized. Remember my Companions; one day, we know not when, YOU or someone you care deeply for, may need the resources available through YOUR Ohio Masonic Homes.

The Ohio Masonic Home is the living expression of our Masonic obligation and strives to offer relief to worthy distressed Brethren and their families. Together, Jean and I have been working with the Masonic Homes to establish a special fund in support of the Memory Care Program. You may have seen our special Charity Challenge earlier in the Grand King program. This fundraising initiative will direct all monies generated to support the Compassionate Care Training activities within the Memory Care Program.

Please Note: Lady Jean and I would also like to request that you consider donating to the Ohio Masonic Home, in place of any gifts you might consider for our travels as we represent Ohio Capitular Masonry.

The Royal Arch FoundationThe Royal Arch Foundation provides financial support for those beginning of life’s journey. The Adopt America Foundation helps children lacking a forever family and places them in loving permanent homes.

The Royal Arch Foundation, through your generous donations, financially supports the Adopt America Network in their mission to place children into adoptive families. The Adopt America 22

Page 23: ohioram.orgohioram.org/gallery/Smith/2020-21 GK Rollout...  · Web viewFocus. Grand King Program. Grand Chapter of Ohio 2020 – 2021. Daniel Smith, Grand King. Focus . Companions,

Network works to find permanent loving homes for children with special needs. The Adopt America Network also conducts training for prospective adoptive parents. No Child should ever live one day without experiencing the loving embrace of a caring, nurturing, permanent family. The Foundation helps to connect a child in need with that loving family making it a reality for children that are in need of a miracle.

The Royal Arch Foundation of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio is desirous of continuing our support of the Adopt America Network, our charity of choice. Its goal is dedicated to helping place children with special circumstances, whether they are physical, emotional or are inflicted with some other type of special condition.

I would like to request that all District Deputy Grand High Priest in each of our 15 districts appoint a Companion Royal Arch Mason to represent the foundation at various district events; to speak on behalf of the foundation and the needs of the Adopt America Network; oversee funding raising and other activities, and to promote special needs adoption.

I also challenge each Chapter to make a monetary donation to the Royal Arch Foundation in support of Adopt America and to provide an item for the Royal Arch Foundation's Silent Auction at Grand Chapter 2021. Please consider helping where you can.

Fund RaisingOur efforts to support The Royal Arch Foundation and Adopt America can be enhanced through fundraising initiatives within our Chapters and Districts. Honor the long-tenured service of your Companions as well as memorial remembrances through fund-raising efforts and personal donations to our charities of choice. Collections during the Reaffirmation Day should also be included in these efforts. Fundraising activities, especially when coordinated with area Lodges and other Masonic and Community organizations can be a great way to generate funds for our charities but can also be an opportunity of enhanced inter-masonic fellowship. Include Youth Groups to help in organized fundraising activities. Reach out to the Lion's, Rotary, FFA, Junior Achievement, etc. for interaction on cooperative fundraising efforts. These fundraising efforts could also be a means whereby we further educate the public about Masonry.

Organ Donations The Grand Chapter of Ohio also supports Organ/Tissue Donations. Organ and Tissue donations may be made through your driver’s license and can give new life to those that may leave these earthly bonds if they do not receive these lifesaving donations.

Awards and Recognition

Grand Chapter Awards

The Grand Chapter has several means of recognizing companions for their tenure to the craft and labors dedicated in support of Capitular Masonry. Below are just a few means of recognizing these Companions.

Service Awards: Service Awards are available for those companions that have achieved the 50, 60, 65, 70 and over 70 years benchmark in Capitular Masonry. Service award presentations should be brought to the attention of the Grand Officers through the DDGHP. The chapter secretary should request the pins and cards from the office of the Grand Secretary as early in the capitular year as possible (starting June 1)

It’s advisable whenever possible to present these service awards at either a Chapter or District meetings. These presentations could also be made at a special event/meeting where family and friends are invited to be present. A special meeting might include a Re-consecration of the Temple or Chapter or at a District organized dinner/banquet. Combining several activities would benefit all and enhance the standing of your chapter or district.

I respectfully ask that the chapters High Priest or Secretary contact me personally when scheduling the 70 and 70+ year service award presentations. It would be an honor for myself and the other Grand Officers to present the Award to the companion.

Grand Chapter Awards: To be given at the discretion of the District Deputy Grand High Priest. Such awards include the: District Work Horse Award; Most Improved Chapter Award; Sojourners Award; High Priest of the Year Award; and Chapter of the Year Award. In some districts, these awards are presented at the district Grand High Priest reception.

Earl C. Gifford Meritorious Service Award: Every District, if not every Chapter, should consider nominating one of your hard-working, unsung heroes of the chapter for this award. Nominees for this award should be sponsored by the Chapter and should be for a companion that goes out of his way to help their Chapter succeed. Ask yourself this question: “Is there someone that is always there, maybe in the background supporting the Chapter advance Capitular Masonry?” This award is presented to a maximum of four companions annually at the Grand Convocation in October. The nomination form may be downloaded from the Grand Chapter website. Nomination forms for The Earl C. Gifford Distinguished Service Award are to be sent to the Grand Marshal by June 30, 2021.

Capitular Lady of The Year Award: Similar to the Meritorious Service Award, this annual award is presented to four ladies that have supported Capitular Masonry by going above and beyond the usual expectations of our ladies. The nomination form may be downloaded from the Grand Chapter website. Every District or Chapter should consider submitting a nomination to honor the ladies that help to advance the values of Capitular Masonry. Nomination forms for The Grand Chapter Lady Award are to be sent to the Grand Marshall by June 30, 2021.

Grand High Priest Award: This year we will be presenting a Grand High Priest Award for every Chapter that chooses to stretch the envelope and works to redefine the established routine. The criteria for achievement are detailed in a separate document located in subsequent pages of this handout. Additional information will be provided to the Deputies over the summer months at the

Publicity

When you schedule any type of activity, please get the notice out to your members as soon as possible. Because we are a multigenerational organization please make every attempt to not only sent out newsletters, or make phone contact, but also send out E-Mails, Web posts, Twitter posts and/or Facebook posts. These are all great ways to disseminate news and increase attendance at your meetings and functions. Also, please send your meeting notice to the Grand Chapter Web Master to have it added to the Grand Calendar. It’s important to try to remember to use more than one means of communication in an attempt to inform all of our companions. This small act may just be that one thing that will engage companions that don’t normally attend your stated meetings

Web Site – Some chapters find it useful to post their activities on a chapter web site. This is a good way to keep younger members informed and may just be the key to getting them engaged in your chapter's activities. If you need assistance in setting up a chapter web site, the District Technology Officer may just be able to get you started. There are many tech-savvy companions throughout the state that, if asked, may be able to offer their assistance – just ask.

Social Media – Social media can be a very powerful tool in the communication process if properly managed. Facebook is one of those communication tools. Ask the members of your chapter, one of them may be interested in setting up and managing a social media site for your chapter. I will make every reasonable attempt to post upcoming travels and important notices on Facebook. I also expect to share post-meetings pictures from around the state as soon as possible after the conclusion of the visit.

Communications with the Grand High Priest

Though the recommended protocol states that all requests and communication with the Grand High Priest go through the District Deputies, I am not opposed to direct communication under certain situations. It's my preference to have an Open-Door policy when it comes to communication. Please keep in mind that between family and other commitments, I may not be able to answer a phone call at the time it’s placed so please leave a message. Also, please keep phone messages and e-mails brief and to the point. Include the topic/subject/issue you wish to discuss in your voicemail or e-mail.

Christmas / Easter and Holy Day Observance

HOLY WEEKS

Holidays are for personal reflection, worship and family time. It is my firm belief that traditional Christian and Jewish Holidays should be observed by those that celebrate the Christian or Jewish faiths. I am specifically addressing the Christian Holidays of Christmas and Easter and the Jewish Holidays of Hanukkah and Passover. Our Royal Arch bodies should not in any manner interfere with these observances. These are special times of the year and are meant to be spent and celebrated with our families and friends. However, Chapters that wish to observe holy days of other faiths should be respected. They should be encouraged to observe their holy days just as some of us observe the specified Christian or Jewish holidays.

Follow the protocol below for specified holy days:

Please remember to notify your members by mail 30 days in advance of the dispensation and include the scheduled date change for your December stated meeting

Grand High Priest - Special Requests

Please, do all within your power to avoid suspending those companions that have reached the 50-yr. milestone and are at risk of suspension for non-payment of dues. This request also applies to those companions that have reached the age of 80. For these companions at risk, if personal finances are of significant concern, respectfully request the companion pay the per capita fee if at all possible. As an option, I might also suggest that your chapter set-up an almoner’s fund to offset the per-capita for those companions that are eligible for assistance as detailed above.

The District Education Officer (DEO) is a position that is appointed by the Grand High Priest and performs his duties in support of the Grand Chapter Education Committee. It's for these reasons that I strongly recommend that these Grand Chapter Appointees (DEO's) receive Grand Honors at all inspections and when visiting chapters within their district and in the performance of their office. I will be requesting the District Deputy Grand High Priest record within the inspection report all instances of compliance with this recommendation.

Over the generations, Veterans and active military (Including First Responders) have performed the service of keeping this country free and helped to maintain the quality of life we all enjoy. These Men and Women have courageously written a blank check to the people of this country and for the Liberties and Freedoms, we have today. It's for this reason that at every meeting where Masons gather, I'm requesting that these men be recognized and thanked for their service to our country and communities. It will be acceptable and endorsed that these men (and women if present) be recognized. If deemed appropriate by the DDGHP, Grand Honors may be extended. However, please keep in mind that Grand Honors may only be given in a tiled or guarded meeting and where guests are not present.

In Conclusion

Companions, all of the grand officers have only one interest in mind and is that of seeing you and your chapters succeed, prosper and have fun in the process. We are here to serve you! We are also here to ensure the future of this Great Fraternity for you and your companions by bringing the Light of Capitular Masonry into clear Focus. However, some of you might ask, “How can I personally. apply the theme of “Focus” to my Royal Arch existence" and "How can I instruct others to Focus"?

Just like the Lighthouse that focuses its light upon many spots as it brightens and illuminates safe passage you can;

- Focus on the values and lessons imparted through our Royal Arch degrees and turn the light internally to enhance not only your understanding of those values but to help you improve and perfect the spiritual temple you are building.

- Focus on Enhancing Brotherhood and Fellowship by being a mentor to younger members to bring understanding and perspective to new Companions

Just like the Laser that focuses its light to highlight items of importance and cut through difficult substances, you can;

- Focus on our philanthropies and bring greater awareness to how we can help others in need; we can strive to brighten the lives of others less fortunate or in distress.

- Focus on cutting through negative self-efficacy and conduct by supporting and focusing on the values and teachings of our Masonic principles.

Just like the Theatrical Follow-spot that brings attention to important components of life, you can;

- Focus on bringing educational awareness to the Lessons of our degrees – through education we can all improve as men and masons and bring light to others about the values we express through our degrees.

- Focus on the Future of our fraternity and how your skills, can advance the success of our fraternity for future generations

Let’s all strive to maintain and bring into Focus those things that are important in our lives as Royal Arch Masons through our vision and with our internal and external light.

Royal Arch Widows Degree

Without the support of our Ladies, who stay home night after night while we go to our Masonic Meetings, our lives would be lacking, and the fraternity would suffer. The ladies in our lives are extremely important in supporting our Masonic fraternity and in our regular attendance at meetings. For this reason, the Companions in Montana came up with a way to provide entertainment and offer special recognition for the ladies through this wonderful skit.

_PROCLAMATION_Office of the Grand High Priest

(with permission of the Grand King,Rt. Ex. Companion Daniel S. Smith)

Sunday, October 25, 2020, is hereby proclaimed to be Royal Arch Reaffirmation Day in Ohio when it is hoped that all Royal Arch Masons with their families will gather together in a religious service to reaffirm their faith in the Grand Architect of the Universe and Royal Arch Freemasonry.

It is recommended that each Chapter combine with other Chapters, or better yet, make it a district-wide event.

If for some reason another date is more appropriate for the observance, it is permissible to schedule the event on an alternate date. But do have an observance.

It is expected that each District Deputy Grand High Priest will at once inform the High Priests in his respective Districts, and urge them to start making plans for this observance immediately. The event can also be a District Association function.

We wish you success. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated by the Right Excellent Companion Daniel S. Smith, Grand King and soon to be Grand High Priest.

Immediately after the event, but no later than November 30, 2020, send the ROYAL ARCH REAFFIRMATION REPORT TO THE NEW GRAND CHAPLAIN at:

REC Richard D. Snow, Grand Chaplain2243 McCoy Road

Upper Arlington, OH 43220

The data to be reported includes the type of program you had, the attendance, and if contributions were made to The Ohio Mason Home or Royal Arch Foundation, and should include the amount collected. Checks should be made out to the appropriate charity.)

EdictWhereas the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of the State of Ohio is desirous of encouraging our constituent Chapters including Mark Lodges and all of the Companions and Brethren within our jurisdiction to be able to fully observe their Holy Days

Whereas the Period know as Holy Week, and Passover week which in 2021 will fall between March 28, 2021, and April 4, 2021, is a period when many of the Companions and Brethren within our jurisdiction will be observing days holy to Christian and Jewish worshipers.

Whereas the Period known as the Christmas Holiday Season, which in 2020 will fall between December 23, 2020, through January 3, 2021, is a period when many of the Companions and Brethren within our jurisdiction will be observing the Christmas Holiday Season.

Whereas the Period known as the Hanukkah Holiday Season, which in 2020 will fall between December 10, 2020, through December 18, 2020, is a period when many of the Companions and Brethren of the Jewish Faith within our jurisdiction will be observing the Hanukkah Holiday Season.

Whereas the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of the State of Ohio wishes to ensure that no Royal Arch District and no Constituent Chapter or Mark Lodges conduct any activity during the Christmas or Hanukkah Holiday seasons which will interfere with the ability of the Companions and Brethren within our jurisdiction to travel, worship and to enjoy time with their families during the Christmas Holiday Season.
