Regret is a great way to tie the past to the present, to make backstory relevant.
And it can be the undercurrent that drives the plot.
Unfortunately, it’s hard to realistically show the emotions
surrounding regret.
Characters often seem whiny or angst-ridden, no matter how hard you try.
