Hello All,
Welcome to Winter! Brrr!! Its cold out there! Not to mention wet! Luckily for us
brave and bold enough to be out riding, we are having our next three rallies in-
doors, at Kookaburra Lodge in Kyneton. Hopefully lots of members, old and new,
can come along and enjoy the facility. ‘Old members’ please keep an eye out for
any ‘newbies’ and make them feel very welcome, as is the GDARC way! Also, its
not too late to grab a last minute spot at the upcoming July rally, next SUNDAY,
the 13th. Email Cathy at [email protected] for details.
Lots of exciting things are happening in the non-horsey world for some of our
members. Congratulations to Megan Clements and her fella (and SJ instructor)
Liam Hartz on their recent engagement! Such a lovely couple, we wish you all the
happiness. And I’ve also heard rumours around the traps of some new junior
members that will be arriving sometime soon?? Congratulations to those members
too!
Now, to dampen the mood, some sad news of my own. I had a first hand experi-
ence with the dreaded colic last month, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of
my beloved mare, Evie. Those of you who knew this girl, knew how tough and
stubborn she was and in true form, she was stoic till the end. So Vale, my Evie
girl, you are sorely missed. I would just like to thank all the lovely people of
GDARC who sent condolence messages and offers of horses to ride. Such a caring
community of people. And a special mention to Annelie Tucker, who was there
with me when all the ‘drama’ went down and stayed there till the very end, when
it all got too much for me.
I hope you all manage to get out and ride in these cold
and dark weeks. Just remember, its not all doom and
gloom! We’re already half way through winter! Happy
riding :)

Presidents Report Its been an interesting year so far. We had a scorching hot summer and a narrow escape when we decided to postpone our fundraising show jumping day in February. We based our decision
on fire risk indicators, and unfortunately, we were right! Lucy Nicholson, Jenny McMillan and
their crew worked wonders – set up a new day in April, reorganised officials and volunteers
and invited competitors to hold their entries over for the new date. We decided to offer all
profits from the day to the Ricky Bannister support fund and we were overwhelmed with sup-
port from officials, sponsors, volunteers and competitors. We were able to present a cheque
for $4700 at our June Rally. Our gratitude goes to Lucy, Jenny and the volunteers for their
work, and to the riding community for support.
We also canvassed committee and a sample of riders about what they value most about the
Gisborne District Riding Club. The number one motivator was the sense of community and mu-
tual support in the club. Our numbers is currently around 70 paid up members, and we have a
steady stream of new applications for members. Potential members who visit our rallies to see
what we do report that they decide to apply to join because of the inclusive attitude of the
club members and our willingness to welcome new members. “It feels friendly here”- “I like
that everyone is welcome” – “When I rode at XXXXX they were really cliquey, and if you were-
n’t winning, they didn’t want to know. I like the way you look after everyone here, whatever
their experience.”
We held our first non-riding social function in May – a video watching evening at Tammy Geor-
galoudis’ house. OK, there might have been a bit of wine and food, and a bit of chat about
horses, horse sport, best deals on cowboy gear etc. Its such a relief to be in a group of people
and not have to keep bringing the conversation back from horse related stuff just for the sake
of being social with non-horsy types. Thanks Tammy.
Note to existing members – please look out for newcomers – say hello if you notice them at a
rally or at a competition and remember to offer support and advice to help them learn about
the Adult Riding club scene. One newcomer who has had an outstanding season is Darren Hess!
Look at our Facebook page to see his smiling face surrounded by ribbons and garlands he has
won! Congratulations Darren.
Our July rally is on Sunday 13 July. We hold winter rallies indoors to protect our rain soaked
riding arenas. We have had to move from Jack's Run, unfortunately, and this month the rally is
at Kookaburra Lodge in Kyneton. It’s the first time we have used the venue, so please take
care when you arrive – it might take a while to adjust to the parking and venue conditions.
Thank you to Jack’s Run for allowing us to use their magnificent facility over the last few
years.
Final item – the Committee has changed the newsletter format from monthly to quarterly. Our
editor keeps feeding items in the GDARC Facebook page and web page. We think it keeps the
news current and gives readers the chance to give immediate feedback – the hits, likes and
comments on postings show really good coverage, particularly when there is a special event in
the wings..
Happy Riding. John

Club Rallies
This month, we look forward to heading indoors to our new winter rally facility in Kyneton.
What a great opportunity to get some riding in, in this yucky weather!
This month we have John Francis for dressage and Sally Hudson for show jumping.
John is a club favourite among the dressage folk, so I’m sure everyone will have a great
ride! Sally is new to the club and we are really looking forward to learning from her. She
is a well accredited coach, and has a passion for helping horses and riders move up the
levels. We are looking forward to hearing your feedback on both instructors as it assists
in planning future rallies.
There are still times available for both dressage and show jumping at this months rally.
Lesson rates are as usual 1 lesson is $35, 2 Lessons are $60 and 3 lessons are $90.
Please forward your bookings using the attached booking form to Cathy at

So to the final leg of our club's Ricky Bannister fundraising journey....the presentation. The
whole fundraising process had taken almost a full year from the idea Charlotte, Jenny, Melissa,
Simon and I had at Ricky's Fundraising Dinner and Auction to the presentation. This idea was
embraced by the committee, club members, sponsors, competitors, judges, volunteers and
supporters alike to deliver a truly outstanding result. As I said at the presentation, witnessing
many acts of kindness and generosity from so many caring people along the way has been a
step towards restoring my faith in people and at times simply taken my breath away.
At our June rally it was absolutely wonderful to welcome Ricky's wife and son, Emily plus the
gorgeous little William. Ricky had very much hoped to attend as well but the cold, wet
weather made this impossible.
Jenny McMillan spoke about Ricky, “As a competitor, Ricky epitomised the HRCAV spirit: a
dedicated competitor who always had a smile and encouraging words for fellow riders"
Just talking to Emily about the rehabilitation and constant medical care Ricky needs plus the
impact on the Bannister family's lives illustrated how much the funds we raised are needed
and what a worthy cause we have supported. The final amount raised was an amazing $4,700!
Ricky was getting a new wheelchair that very next week. The family are extremely grateful
with sincere thanks from Emily on the day plus here's a message from Jordan, Ricky's brother,
"Hi Lucy, hope yesterday went well. Rick wasn't well enough to attend in the end but mum
tells me Emily came along. Hope the day was fun and I am honestly so thankful for everything
you have done. I really wish I could have been there. Just heading back from Adelaide now.
Thanks again, Jordan"
As I've said many, many times before, well done to everyone involved, you should be very
proud of your contributions :-)

Diary Dates to Remember
Handy Hint from Kohnke’s Own Horse Health Care
Feed Twice Daily
It is best to feed a hard feed or hay in the morning and evening (ie twice
daily), rather once daily, as the horse will have an energy source provided
to help regain energy and warmth after a cold night, especially where grazing
is short and sparse during the winter months on frosted and cold pastures
until they warm up by mid morning. An evening feed with extra hay will help to
provide available energy and fibre for hindgut fermentation to prepare for the
cold overnight conditions and help keep the horse warm and contented with
a full belly. This is particularly important in the case of mares and foals,
weanlings and yearlings, where heat loss from cold weather will sap
energy for growth in young horses and development of the
unborn foal in late pregnant mares.
Visit www.kohnkes.com for more great info on all aspects of horse care.
