observe life along these “water highways” while passingthrough one of the few areas in the world where farmingis done below sea level. to navigate through the narrowersections of the backwaters you will transfer from the MVVrinda to a traditional rice boat or kettuvallam. As the boatmeanders through the tranquil network of canals, youmay observe the small hamlets and lush green paddyfields, vendors selling wares from their rice boats, andchildren being ferried home from school. We will stop tovisit a traditional Kerala family residence, called a tharavad,and will also stop at St. Mary’s Church, a 100-year-old Hindutemple, and the Chambakulam boat yard, which displaysone of the traditional long snake boats used for racing. Inthe late afternoon, return to Vembanad Lake on the Vrinda,which will anchor at the jetty for the night. B/L/D

Wednesday, November 20AJANTA CAVESEnjoy a full-day excursion to the Ajanta caves, now preservedas a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Buddhist artist-monkscarved these monumental cave temples into the curvedmountainside of the Sahyadri Hills some 2,000 years ago,using only pick, hammer and chisel. These astoundingmasterpieces were discovered in the 19th century by Britishofficers out for a tiger hunt. The carvings within the templesand monasteries, many painted in astonishing detail, tracethe life of Buddha and the story of Buddhism from 200 B.C.to 650 A.D. Natural light brightens the caves at different timesof day, illuminating the work of these ancient masters.

Thursday, November 21ELLORA CAVES • RETURN TO MUMBAIEnjoy a half-day excursion to the Ellora Caves, also a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. These 34 shrines, carved into the sidesof a hill of basalt, form a magnificent repository of Buddhist,Hindu and Jain religious expression. They represent Indiansculpture at its finest. The mammoth, awe-inspiring KailashTemple is carved from solid rock and dedicated to MountKailash of the Himalayas, the abode of the many-faceted LordShiva. In the afternoon, visit the famousTemple of the Tooth, said to house one of Buddha’s teeth;and Gadaladeniya, a Buddhist temple with a Hindu shrineattached, embellished with images of Buddha and 14th-century frescoes. salubrious climate. En route we will stop to view a waterfalland visit Labookelle Tea Estate and factory. In the afternoonyou will visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens to see exotictrees, shrubs and herbs known to thrive best in hill country.Enjoy a visit at the Ceylon Breweries, established in 1881,and see this resort area’s famous golf course and marketplace. Thursday, November 28RIVER SAFARI • CITY TOUR OF GALLE • BENTOTA BY THE SEAToday we will journey to Bentota, with several stops toenjoy en route. The first is Balapitiya, a small, picturesquevillage renowned for its beaches. Embark a private boat fora river safari on the Madu Ganga, traveling through the thickmangroves to see the abundant bird life and the unusualstyle of fishing and prawn trapping still practiced by thepeople of the islands. At the end of our river safari, continueby road to Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded inthe 16th century by the Portuguese. Our city tour of Galle willinclude the Dutch Fort, built in 1663, and the Dutch Museum,housed in a restored historic Dutch mansion furnished withpaintings, prints, documents, furniture and ceramics fromthe colonial era. We will also stop at the Dutch ReformedChurch, which was constructed without any supportingpillars inside the building.

At the end of the day we will arrive in Bentota, located inthe southern coastal belt of Sri Lanka and known for itsstretches of indigo sea and golden sands. Check in at ourhotel for an overnight stay. B/L/D

Physical requirements: This is an active program with considerable walkingand a number of rigorous travel days. Daily excursions involve one to threemiles of walking, including stairs without handrails and cobbled uneven paths.

All flights within India and flights to Sri Lanka are on American/European-madeBoeing or European Airbus equipment. Land travel over shorter distances willbe by air-conditioned buses with no onboard toilet facilities. Western-styletoilet facilities may not always be available, except at your hotel. Some routesrequire several hours of travel, at typical average speeds of just over 30 m.p.h.,as most roads in India are two lanes and unimproved, utilized by heavymotor vehicles, buses, tractors, pedestrians and animal-drawn carts.

Cross-Culture LLC and the agencies in India with which we work reserve theright to make appropriate alterations in this itinerary, should inclementweather or other unforeseen circumstances occur. You may also request a reservation online at www.ccjourneys.com orwww.smallshiptravel.com. Early registration is strongly recommended for thefollowing reasons: Group size is limited (24 on Cultural and Family Journeys; 20 onPresident’s Land Tours; we use small-ship cruise lines whose ships have a maximumcapacity of 225 guests—choice cabins ALWAYS sell out quickly; single accommo-dations are subject to availability; some trips require additional preparationtime and airlines restrict seat inventory.

The final payment forsmall-ship cruises is due at least 120 days prior to departure. If final payment isnot paid when due, Cross Culture reserves the right to regard the reservation ascancelled. If the trip is fully booked when we receive your deposit, we will returnyour payment, or with your authorization, we will retain your deposit and placeyour name on a priority waiting list in case other participants cancel.

Cancellations and refundsIf it becomes necessary for you to cancel your trip (or any portion thereof), youmust notify Cross Culture in writing, by e-mail, or by fax immediately. The effectivedate of your cancellation will be the date that we receive your notification. CrossCulture will assess a cancellation charge to cover loss of nonrefundable advancepayments we may have made on your behalf to including, but not limited to:ground operators; cruise lines; airlines; government agencies; communicationexpenses; and the loss of time. The cancellation charge applies regardless of thereason for cancellation, such as State Department travel warnings. Cancellationcharges per person are as follows:

Name changes are considered a cancellation, and the above-listed charges apply.If you are a no-show, if you cancel your trip after the departure date, or if youleave a trip already in progress, you will not receive any refund for any unused portion of your trip.

Note: Air refunds, if any, are determined by the individual airlines. Cross-Culture, may, in order to take advantage of schedules and competitivepricing, purchase airlines tickets in advance. These tickets are non-refundablewithin 95 days of departure.

We ask you toappraise your own capabilities honestly. And, we ask that you be considerate ofthe other group members and do not delay the scheduled group activities. Wedo not provide assistance if you require the use of a wheelchair or have otherpersonal needs; in such cases a companion who will assist you must accompanyyou. Cross-Culture reserves the right to decline to accept or retain any participantshould such person’s health or deportment impede the operation of the trip orenjoyment of any other participant. If Cross-Culture decides not to retain a partici-pant during the trip, Cross-Culture assumes no financial responsibility for anyunused portion of the tour or for any incidental charges therein.

TRAVEL INSURANCEWE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR INVESTMENTIN CASE YOU HAVE TO CANCEL OR INTERRUPT YOUR VACATION. This coverage willoffset cancellation charges in the event of illness before or during your trip. PHOTOGRAPHY ON TOURCross-Culture reserves the right to take photographs or video during the operationof any tour or part thereof, and to use the resulting images or video for promo-tional purposes.
