Girls & Boys Mini Show
What a great community event the Boys and Girls Mini Show turned out to be last Saturday. There were
parents and children from all over the Bay in what was a friendly community atmosphere.
The fundraising committee, who put in a huge amount of work to make it happen, were rapt with the turnout
and the positive feedback from parents and children. They were also extremely appreciative for all the support
they got with food and help. We certainly have a wonderful community. The day raised nearly $3000 some of
which will be used to help with subsidizing school camps and purchasing resources for the children.
Thanks to the staff for their work with the children in completing great artwork, vegetable creations and floral
displays.
It was great to see so many people watching the judging of the calves, lambs, goats and dogs. The children
were really excited to be able to show their animals off and it was great they were rewarded with the crowd
support.
The pizza oven that was recently made by the Room 5 children got a good workout and proved to be the most
popular of the food items for sale. Renford and Bridget certainly had the pizza cooking down to a fine art.
Comments from some of the children that came to the show…..
The best part was that I got a first note for my Lego. I made two cars, two houses and a robot. Chase
I really liked the animals being judged. My favourite was Emma’s calf Annabelle, because she looked so pretty and walked
so nicely. Bella
I liked climbing up the bouncy castle and bouncing down. My dog was naughty and didn’t do as he was told. Layla R
I helped Mum with the cup cake decorating. Lots of children came and did decorating. I had lots of turns on the bouncy
castle. Clara
I got the champion small dog ribbon with my Aunty Lisa’s dog Scooter. He was not at all good at leading but was good at
sitting and doing tricks. Holley

Soccer Tournament The soccer tournament last week went really well with all our Year 3 – 6 students taking part. It was a tiring day with the children playing quite a few games and covering a lot of distance. The children from all the schools turned up with a great attitude and sportspersonship was evident throughout the day. It was a pleasure to be part of. Our Yr 3/4 girls and Yr 5/6 boys teams managed to win their grades with the Yr 3/4 boys narrowly beaten in the final in extra time in an awesome game against Takaka Primary. The Yr 5/6 girls were runners up. Thanks go to the venue organisers from Central Takaka, Takaka and Collingwood Schools for running a great day for the children. Thanks also to the parents who helped out with transport to Central and to Collingwood, to those who managed a team on the day and to our supporters. Year 3/4 Girls

It was a fun day even though we only won one game and scored only one goal. My favourite position was striker. I enjoyed playing
against one of my best friends from another school. Tara
I was proud I made it into the finals and we nearly won it. The Takaka team were pretty good. My Dad coached our team and he was
pleased with how we played. Kiyo
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would because I prefer playing rugby. I played in all the positions and liked them all. Hugo
I played goalie quite a lot and managed to stop lots of goals. I practice quite a bit and that helped. Arjuna
LOST Chase in Room 2 has lost his
tennis trophy. If you find it
please return it to the office.

Community of Learning I met with the other Principals in the Bay as well as Ministry representatives to discuss the next stage in the Golden Bay Community of Learning We plan to appoint a lead principal during Term 1, next year. We will also share our achievement data to find common threads between the schools and come up with an achievement plan.
What is a Community of Learning A Community of Learning is a group of schools that formally gets together to raise achievement. Working together will enable us all to share teaching expertise and experience so every child can benefit. The funding available will allow our most effective teachers to work with and support others, raising the quality of teaching across schools. Our Community of Learning will be made up of Takaka, Central and Motupipi primary schools as well as Golden Bay High School and the Collingwood Area School. Whilst they are not funded we plan to also include the Early Childhood centres as well as post secondary education.
What will a Community of Learning do?
set shared goals and work together to achieve these

Parent Consultation Thanks to those who have come along to the parent consultation meetings. We
have had two with one more today at 3pm. Thanks also to the Board of Trustee
members for coming along and chairing the meetings.
We have had lots of feedback on things that are going well and things to improve
on.
We plan to collate the information next week and then share it with our
community.
Geology Field Trip. Lola, Hayden and Rhys were invited to attend a geology field trip organized
by Shaun Bryant from Central Takaka School. This was a science extension
for these students and they were accompanied by other keen students from
the local schools.
All three enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot. Rhys presented a report on
his day of learning.
Mr Cullen took us to Rangihaeata to meet up with the other schools and
Shaun who had organised the trip. We had a quick safety briefing from
Shaun and then the interesting stuff began.
Geoff Rennison talked to us about an historical cliff. It was amazing. Fine
clay lay at the top, in the middle was a rock like coal and at the bottom there
was coal.
We continued our walk down to the corner of the beach and stopped at a
huge limestone mass.
Geoff told us these facts about limestone
– full of fossils
– formed under the sea in warm lagoons.
– Found all over NZ.
I found a cave and explored it and found evidence of glow worms.
We headed back to the van and stopped on the way to look at a limestone
rock. It was full of shell fossils.
We ate our lunch and Shaun told us how shells, chalk, limestone and black
marble all have calcium. To test for calcium, we put a small amount of
sulphuric acid on a piece chalk. It fizzed and dissolved the chalk very fast.
We squeezed lemon juice on limestone and it didn't dissolve as fast as the
chalk but it did bubble slowly. Finally we squeezed lemon juice on the black
marble and it dissolved slower than the chalk but faster than the limestone.
Then we travelled to the Takaka river bridge. We looked at the rocks under
the bridge. Some of us had hammers and safety goggles, and some of us had
lemon to test if there was black marble or limestone rocks there.
If you hit black marble with a hammer, it makes a high pitched sound. I
really enjoyed testing the rocks this way.
Shaun had magnets to test if any rocks had iron in them. He also had a rock
collection and we had to try to find rocks like the ones in his collection. That
was really fun.
I really enjoyed the geology trip and the things we learnt.
I am thankful that I was able to go on this trip!
