We all know that dog is man’s best friend, but how would you go sharing a desk with one? Having four-legged companions in the workplace is becoming more popular, with many Australian companies welcoming furry friends into the office.

Sydney-based real estate company, Gunning Commercial is just one of an increasing number of Australian workplaces that are inviting pets into their work space, finding that having dogs in the office can boost morale and reduce stress levels. Hear more about their story here.

Gippsland is set for an economic boost with the announcement that the Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) Flight Pilot Training School will be located at Sale from 2019.

The 25-year contract is said to be worth at least $2 billion, with around half a billion expected to be injected into the local economy throughout this time.

Approximately 162 new jobs are also expected to be created to support the program, that will have an annual intake of around 165 trainee pilots. You can read more about it here.

Fitness and healthy living has gained a lot of momentum over the past decades and this trend is being reflected in our national employment stats.

Seek.com.au reports that Sport and Recreation jobs advertisements jumped 11 per cent over the past year. Management jobs advertised for this industry are up 23 per cent, with gym management positions making up the bulk of these.

ROBOTS REPLACING HUMANS? ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND WORK IN THE NEXT DECADE

It has been a pie in the sky fear for generations, but humans being replaced by artificial intelligence in the workplace is fast becoming a reality. The Financial Review has reported that over the next decade, almost half of the manufacturing tasks in some countries will be performed by robots.

A recent technology disruption report conducted by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, investigated the ways that machines will be used to perform everything from providing investment advice to performing surgery. This rise in robotic activity is going to have negative consequences on employment for humans, with an estimated 47% of jobs in America potentially being automated by 2020.

To date, Australia has been slow to introduce industrial robots in manufacturing, using only a fraction of what countries like Korea and Japan use in this sector.

The Hales family run a 530 acre dairy operation, milking about 160 cows in South Gippsland’s Korrine district. They have decided to make the change to organic farming after over 100 years of conventional farming.

There is currently a supply/demand dilemma in the Australian organic produce market which has seen some traditional farmers take the leap to an organic change.

The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia is reporting there is currently a 40 per cent deficit in the supply of organic produce in Australia. Read more of The Hales family story here.

Traralgon’s very own airport has recently received a multi-million dollar facelift that has propelled it to become a state-of-the-art regional airport that will support the aerospace industry.

The $4.24 million project at the Latrobe Regional Airport included the installation of a new runway and upgrades to the navigation systems.

The project is said to have created 107 jobs during the construction phase and up to 200 jobs have been created in the aerospace industry since its commencement. The full article can be found here.

For those of you who worked with Shane Badman over the last couple of years, we are sad to say he has now left GBS to move interstate. He was a wonderful asset and we wish him all the best.

However, we are very fortunate to welcome Leanne Bland back to our team following the birth of her beautiful baby. Leanne has worked for GBS over the past 12 months and has officially returned to assist the General Manager Rob Darby on a part-time basis.

Born and raised in Latrobe Valley, Leanne commenced her working career providing administration services to a local primary school, financial and employment services companies. Since 2006, Leanne has been in the Employment Services industry as a Recruitment Consultant in the UK, Melbourne and locally in Gippsland covering temporary and permanent staffing services to clients across a variety of industries. Leanne welcomes any enquiries and is happy to assist or point you in the right direction.

LOCAL DAIRY MANUFACTURERREPORTS GROWTHDairy giant Fonterra operates a large production facility in West Gippsland and has reported a 9 per cent rise in exports in the past year despite low global dairy prices.

The increase for Australian sales was led by skim milk powder, up 29 per cent, cheese which rose 12 per cent, and fluid and fresh dairy which was up by 10 per cent. The full article can be found here.

A big thank you to all of the budding Adam Scotts who attended the annual GBS Golf Day held at the Traralgon Golf Course on 20th November. The 23 teams from across the region braved the Gippsland drizzle to enjoy a day on the green with Maryvale De-Inkers taking out first prize, Johnson Health Tech coming in second and the Fish Creek Hotel claiming third place. Our condolences to the Bendigo Bank team who received this year’s wooden spoon.

Over $500 was raised at this year’s golf day with GBS matching player donations dollar for dollar. This year’s chosen local charity is the Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault.
