Dutch still life masters such as Willem Kalf pioneered the idea of 'genre' images - still lifes. These images expressed a calm, quiet, stillness. The artists of this era were interested in how light reflects off different surfaces, dull surfaces were contrasted skillfully against the sheen of silver and crystal, the matte against the luminous The style of Kalf was highly realisitic, the subject matter consisted everyday objects. www.cap.nsw.edu.au

Vincent Van Gogh Still Life Vase with Irises
1890
The artist has captured, in this image, the powerful force of living things. An important feature of Irises is the expressive use of paint, colour and line that capture the energy and power of nature. Swirling thick and expressive paint is a feature of the work and style of VanGogh. Rather than representing the world as we "see" it with our eyes Van Gogh depicted life around him as he felt it - through colour and texture.
