Spring has arrived with some pleasant warmer weather and the grass is growing. Summer will soon be here.Welcome to our present and future customers in the Bay of Plenty who will be seeing our quarterly mailer for the first time. Just as we do for our Waikato and Rotorua customers, we would like to showcase to you also what we do and what we are about four times a year in this mailer.We see our tractor market share leadership in the Waikato as proof of the fact that our business is growing and we appreciate the continued support of our many customers.

GreGAn’s GIrlsHidden within the lifestyle blocks in Roto O Rangi is a very unassuming shed, outside to some it would appear a junkyard; but housed inside it are the fruits of Jim Gregan’s passion. A humble man with a sharp sense of humour, raised by a dairy farmer, Jim himself became a dairy farmer. He’s been in the local community for 52 years and he’s had a relationship with Giltraps for decades too. He bought one of the first ten silage wagons Giltrap Engineering manufactured, back when they had wooden sides and now has “4 or 5 pieces of Giltrap machinery around the farm”. Andrew (Giltrap)’s father is one of Jim’s mates, and their friendship is built on a mutual love of tractors. He has been restoring David Brown tractors for the last 9 years and he now has a collection of 31 of them. His “girls” as he refers to them, are lovingly stored across three sheds on his 76 acre property. He sources “the girls” from all over the north island and regardless of what condition they are in when they arrive, he fixes them up and with the assistance of his “right-hand restoration man”, Wilfred Giltrap, he gets the “old girls” all go again. He has every model he’s ever wanted, including his latest buy, a “unique Case” that Jim believes is 1 of only 2 in the Waikato manufactured around 1966. When asked how long he’s had

his new project sitting there Jim looks to his watch and chuckles “21 hours, actually my wife doesn’t know about this one yet, I thought if I snuck it in here she wouldn’t really notice.”His pride, passion and love for both restoration and the tractors themselves is heart-warming. When we visited Jim we were treated to a tour of the largest shed, with a detailed run-down of each

and every tractor. Jim’s knowledge of both the David Brown models and every other tractor manufacturer is incredible. He educated us on the history of the David Brown tractor, from the very first one manufactured in 1939, to 1972 when the company sold the tractor operations to Tenneco Inc. of America, who owned the Case tractor company. From then David Brown remained the same tractor technically branded by Case as a then new series addition until the last manufacture in 1988.Through his love of tractors he has seen the advancement in technology and the way in which farming has changed, requiring everyone to have “bigger, better tractors”. Jim’s a man who chooses a tractor by the way it gets the job done. His working choice of tractor is his New Case IH Farmall U Pro 115 complete with Sigma4 loader, which he is looking forward to spending some long hours in when the mowing season kicks off. When I ask him how long he’s known Mike Munro, his Giltrap rep, he looks to Mike and cheekily says “well, we’re not quite married yet, but we’re close” and the pair chuckle. What is clear about Jim Gregan is that he certainly has the ‘Tractor Factor’.

“Ten years ago a hundred horsepower tractor was a hundred horsepower! Now my salesman is talking about boosted hp. I am confused.”Essentially, rated horsepower is the only fair comparison as this is available at all times, whether the tractor be performing front end loader work at slow speed, PTO work, or driving along the road. You must be careful to compare ‘apples with apples’ as there are different standards used by various tractor manufacturers. Case IH use the ECE R24 standard, which actually gives a useful and realistic figure as it includes engine auxiliaries (oil coolers, fan etc) fitted during dyno testing.“What is power boost?”Electrically controlled common rail engines are often quoted as having a power boost feature. This allows the computer to tell the engine to generate more horsepower when certain parameters are reached. In the Case IH Maxxum and Puma ranges it is

when high torque is required for PTO work AND forward speed is required, OR when the tractor is in a transport situation and more power can be used at a higher speed (for example, pulling a trailer on the road).The system is designed so the tractor cannot produce extra power at low speed (hi torque situations), and place too much stress on drivelines. Essentially this means that a smaller, lighter tractor can feel more lively, and have more ‘grunt’ for PTO jobs like power harrowing.There is a BUT. This is ideal for our ‘typical’ dairy farmer customer who wants simplicity and good value.Case IH Tier4 Maxxum tractors, badged EP (Efficient Power) have a more sophisticated electronically controlled common rail engine. This costs more to manufacture, but has the advantage of boosting power and generating additional torque when certain parameters are met. They will also be a little quieter, and potentially more fuel economic when performing light tasks.Conclusion:When you are buying your next tractor, make sure you are comparing ‘real’ power values, and not being misled with a ‘boosted’ horsepower which may be of no advantage to your application.

These changes have reduced the need for a WOF but not the requirement for the tractor to be safe to operate not only on the road but in field or paddock as you guys call it. Maintenance is as important as ever and things like steering joints are easy to check by getting a co-worker to move the steering wheel and you can check for excessive movement at the joints or pins. Can you imagine the consequences of an excessively worn steering joint failing while on the road or while you’re feeding out? Tyre wear can be directly related to the steering geometry as well.
