PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Families and Carers,
Welcome to the Week 6 Edi on of our newsle er. We are quickly moving
through the term and the great learning and engagement by our students
con nues on a daily basis.
I would like to formally advise all families that my tenure as relieving principal
of Gillieston Public School will be concluding at the end of this term. At the
commencement of term 4, I have been appointed as Principal of Kurri Kurri
Public School. Our Director, Educa onal Leadership, Mr Tony Gadd has
informed me today that Mrs Ison will be stepping up into the Relieving Principal
role for term 4. I will be working closely with Mrs Ison over these coming weeks
to ensure that there is a smooth transi on in the school management.
A highlight of this week was the magnificent Science Day conducted on
Monday. Students and staff had a great me exploring varying aspects of
science including flight, chemical reac ons, balance and resistance. A shout out
to Mrs Borg and her team for organising such a wonderful day. The level of
ques oning and explora on that students engaged with throughout the day
was spectacular.
Students (and staff) looked fabulous on Thursday for our school photos. As you
are aware the format had to be altered to abide by COVID‐19 restric ons.
Whilst we were not able to have the tradi onal group class photo all of our
students had individual shots which will be combined into a great class
composite photo.
As the restric ons across the State and na on con nue in regards to COVID‐19
there are a number of ac vi es that have had to be cancelled for 2020. This
includes the annual swim school program which tradi onally is conducted in
December. I am in discussion with Mrs Madden and the various providers to
consider the viability of the Stage 3 excursion to Bathurst; a definite decision
will be made by Friday 11 September 2020 and communicated to our families.
Across NSW Public Schools we celebrate the wonderful contribu on that our
School Support Staff provide to our students. From the staff in the front office,
to our learning support officers and our general assistants a huge and sincere
thank you for everything that you do for Gillieston Public School, especially our
students and families. Your contribu ons help to make each day a bit be er for
everyone at our school.
We have had a number of new families join our school over the past few
weeks. I would like to welcome each and everyone to Gillieston Public School
but especially Kyedon, Connar, Marshall, Stella, Noah, Maddison and Xavier.
Have a great weekend
David Crowe

STUDENT ABSENCES Parents/Carer can advise of absences via the Schoolzine App, a note to the teacher or by replying to the SMS that is automa cally sent each day. Alterna vely, parents may phone the school office to advise of their child’s absence.
P & C INFORMATION Our canteen facility is up and running each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This service is provided by volunteer parents and all profits raised by the canteen go back into our school. A copy of the canteen price list is on our school website.
COVID‐19 As COVID‐19 is s ll causing issues through our communi es we will s ll be required to enforce a number of
isola on and safety regula ons for the benefits of all members of our school community. Unfortunately, parent
involvement in school ac vi es such as reading groups or formal assemblies are s ll restricted. A number of areas have
been relaxed including the return of special religious educa on programs and short student‐centred musters.
Visitors to our school, including parents, are required to complete a School Site Visitor declara on to assist with tracking people and to reinforce safety prac ces whilst at school. These forms will be available at the front office upon your arrival.
TELL THEM FOR ME SURVEY This Term, our school will be par cipa ng in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers ques ons about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
To access the survey for our school go to: h p:nsw.tellthemfromme.com/Gill20
Book Fair – Term 3 Week 10
Tuesday Wednesday & Thursday
Our annual Scholas c Book Fair will be happening again at the end of this term. Students will have the opportunity to browse the books and the novelty items. To purchase, students can bring in money or parents/carers can pay by following the below procedure online and students just bring in the receipt number.
All purchases go toward more beau ful books for our school.
BUS & COMMUNITY SAFETY During the week the school received a report from the community about a “near miss” that occurred when students got off one of our bus runs and stepped out into traffic by going around the front of bus. The dangers of this type of behaviour have been highlighted to all students and it would be appreciated if parents and carers could also highlight the importance of safe pedestrian behaviour.
In a separate report, another incident involving a number of our students
behaving foolishly near the road was provided to the school. With our dis nc ve uniform, it was easy for this
community member to iden fy where the students were from. Again, please help us to reinforce appropriate safe
behaviours to your children both coming to and returning from school.
Thank you to our wonderful SASS Team for SASS Week
For Sale by Tender – Upright Piano
The school currently is a emp ng to find a
new home for an upright piano that we
currently have in storage. It has been a well‐
used piece of furniture but is no longer
being u lised. At least two keys require new
wires and a thorough tuning would be
required.
Tenders for purchase are invited from any
interested par es. The purchaser would
accept the piano in its current condi on and
take responsibility for the removal of the
piano at a convenient me for the school.
Tender bids should be made in wri ng to The Principal, Gillieston Public School, Cnr Ryan’s Road and Northview Street,
Gillieston Heights 2321. Tenders will close 3:30pm Thursday 10 September 2020.
Kindergarten Enrolments
Our Kindergarten enrolments for 2021 have reached the
staggering figure of 39 registra ons which is great news
for the future of our school. Please con nue to promote
our wonderful school to anyone that you may be aware
of that moves into our area. It is never too late to
register a child for next year – actually the more
informa on that we have the be er for planning our
classes and staff.
Mrs Campbell is leading the ‘Going to Gillo’ program and
she is working hard to contact local preschools to work
closely with those centres and our poten al new
students.
GOING TO GILLIESTON P‐K TRANSITION PROGRAM Mrs Campbell is currently leading our Going to Gillieston Program
for 2021 Kindergarten students. Kindergarten transi on programs are currently on hold due to COVID‐19 restric ons.
Mrs Campbell will be communica ng all parent informa on via the Seesaw App.
CRAFT CLUB Students can a end our Cra Club that is held every second half lunch with Mrs Griffith to create and have fun. There have been wonderful ac vi es that the students have enjoyed.
BREAKFAST CLUB is running at Gillieston on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings between 8:35 and 8:55am. Toast and juice is served from the counter by our wonderful P&C volunteers and it always makes me super hungry!
Currently due to Covid‐19 restric ons we have a Take & Talk system.
BOUNCE BACK The Bounce Back program was introduced into all classrooms this week.
Bounce Back is an evidenced‐informed program built on posi ve Psychology, Cogni ve Behaviour Therapy and Social and Emo onal learning Principals. 5/6B Focus Class
This term, 5/6B has been learning a lot about kindness and how we can work
together and to “BOUNCE BACK” showing resilience, a whole school ini a ve.
We have set ourselves challenges to make somebody we may not normally hang
out with smile by being kind to them. This has linked in really well with our novel
study, “I am Jack”, which is about a boy who is bullied but he is just beginning to
stand up for himself as we read this week. He and we will not let the bullies win!
Week 5 In week 5 Captain Gillo was looking at the following areas:
Fixed Equipment
Sand Pit
Week 6 In week 6 Captain Gillo was looking at the following areas:
