The GIJC13 Crowdfunding Campaign -- Thanks for Making it Possible!

In August 2013 we began GIJN’s first crowdfunding adventure. The project was straightforward: to raise funds to bring promising journalists from developing and transitioning countries to the 8th Global Investigative Journalism Conference (GIJC13) in October. We used those funds to bring four great journalists from Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Peru to the conference. We wanted to make sure that a handful of young and promising journalists who otherwise could not attend the conference would get a chance to benefit from this unique global event – to get training in state-of-the-art investigative reporting, data journalism, and cross-border collaboration. We believe these fellowships are a great way to help fight corruption and stand up for accountability and transparency around the world. And we’re grateful to see that you also believe in this. The campaign lasted for one month and was a success: We not only reached our crowdfunding goal of raising $12,000 – we surpassed it (108% funded). We received an extraordinary 111 contributions from 24 countries. (You can check out the full list of contributors here.) So here’s a big thanks to everyone who helped. A few shout-outs are in order: First, our gratitude goes to Gabriela Manuli, GIJN’s program coordinator, who ran much of the campaign. Also to Henk van Ess and Eric Hennakam, who raised $500 by donating funds

from their Internet research workshop in the Netherlands. And special thanks to our colleagues at Netzwerk Recherche, Germany’s association of investigative journalists, which made two large contributions, including a $1,000 donation that put us over the top. Founded in 2001, Netzwerk Recherche is one of the world’s largest associations of investigative journalists. This report showcases what your generosity made possible. We knew from previous conferences that these journalists would take home world-class tools, know-how, and contacts, and the Indiegogo fellows show us again how important it is that we spread this kind of unique training worldwide. We hope you’ll consider continuing to support GIJN’s important work in expanding quality investigative journalism around the world. We have big plans for Asia, new workshops in how to run sustainable investigative teams, and initiatives to strengthen the networks, resources, and tools so investigative journalists can do their jobs more effectively. Meet Our Indiegogo Fellows and Learn about their Experience at GIJC13

1) Rosemary Nwaebuni (Nigeria) “Attending the Global Investigative Journalism Conference has been the most outstanding experience in my professional career.”

Rosemary Nwaebuni is an investigative reporter with the POINTER newspaper in Delta State, Nigeria, an area known for its big oil production and widespread corruption. Rosemary says it would have been impossible for her to have attended workshops at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference without your support.

“Governance is replete with corrupt officials who on a daily basis, perfect ways to subvert and undermine the collective will of the people to advance their selfish end,” she says. “It gives me great joy to go right into their closets to expose and bring them to justice for the ultimate good of society.” Check out Corruption Paid for in Lives in Nigeria's Delta State, her investigation into the sorry state of health care in the region.

Overall, how was your experience? Attending the Global Investigative Journalism Conference has been the most outstanding experience in my professional career. Of immense interest to me were the recommendations by veteran journalists and their encouragement on moving this profession forward during the opening plenary. The conference afforded me the opportunity to meet face to face with professionals who have made their mark in journalism practice and the thrill of witnessing them being honored. The honor bestowed on them was confirmation of the axim that there is reward for good work. What did you like the most? It was very exciting to learn from the conference that there are people who committed their resources to sponsoring investigative reporting with a view to riding the world of criminality and corruption. I was very impressed with

the number of women involved in investigative journalism as evidenced by the number of them that attended the conference. I liked the encouraging narratives of veterans on how they were able to scale the many huddles and surmount challenges associated with the profession. With these, I feel more emboldened and resolved than ever before to take up more challenging investigations aimed at exposing and bringing to book those high profile personalities and organizations covertly involved in shady activities. Can you give us some examples of what you learned? Topmost of the new things I learned were how to enhance my research using the web; sourcing sponsorship for my investigative research; security tips for journalists doing sensitive work; and how to sustain a non-profit newsroom.

Aung Ye Maung Maung is the executive editor of Myanmar Freedom Daily in Yangon, Myanmar, a relatively new English-language newspaper. He has worked as a journalist since 2004. “Myanmar is in transition and the print media here is changing too," he says. "The government lifted censorship on print media just last year, after nearly 50 years."

"The pre-press censor had put a lot of restrictions on us. Now that the print media here is much more open, we are trying to come up with investigative reports. It’s a new thing and a new challenge for us and we know we need to learn a lot.”

Aung believes that GIJC13 was a great opportunity “to learn from the veteran investigative reporters and a good chance for me to network with international investigative reporters.”

“To become an investigative reporter has been my dream. Now that we have a little bit more freedom, I want to write more revealing stories about, corruption, cronies, politicians, etc.,” he says. “Training conferences like the GIJC are important, investigative reporters can not only hone their skills but also exchange views and experiences with fellow investigative reporters from around the world.”

3) Milagros Salazar (Peru) “The conference was a tremendous help to get to know new tools for data journalism.”

Milagros Salazar is a reporter with IDL-Reporteros in Peru, the country’s premier investigative journalism team, and a correspondent for InterPress Service. In 2011, Salazar published a multi-part investigation that exposed fraud in Peru’s fishing industry, the world’s second largest after China.

“The conference was a tremendous help to get to know new tools for data journalism and how this is getting done in other parts of the world,” she says. “From those journalists that have been applying these tools for several years in the US, to those colleagues from African countries for whom this is totally new. Those contrasts allow me to see the improvements and challenges that investigative journalism in Latin America faces.”

“It’s not always possible that reporters of all continents can meet to talk about how to face corruption, help protect human rights, and talk about climate change and many global issues”, she adds.

“It also helped me to identify the challenges of launching new independent digital media, the different ways to search for funding and the importance of creating an own space to publish. Milagros published an article about this in Spanish for the Inter Press Service Agency”.

Nowadays Milagros is working to build a project to promote data journalism in investigative reporting and applying what she learned in Rio with her students at the Universities of Lima and Antonio Ruiz de Montoya. “I believe that we need to learn anything that is necessary to strengthen journalism and to contribute with each investigations to a better world for everyone.”

4) Aaamir Latif (Pakistan) “It was a great experience… The conference is full of experts who can help us understand the latest tools, and how to exploit them in our own countries.”

Aamir Latif is an investigative journalist based in Karachi, Pakistan, where he has gained a reputation for careful, well-sourced national security reporting. Check out, for example, his GlobalPost story about the flood of U.S. weapons into Afghanistan and Pakistan. Aamir also explored how some of those weapons bound for U.S. and Afghan troops in Afghanistan were being stolen, landing instead in the hands of those they are meant to be used against, and fueling militant groups in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Aamir believes that the kind of training available at GIJC13 is critical. "Investigative journalism has never been promoted or insisted on in Pakistan, either by the editors or by the owners,” he says. “There is no investment on this field and people hardly know the importance of media as a watchdog. We lack the training and we lack the tools. So the conference is full of experts that can help us to understand tools that are being used in the develop countries, and how can we exploit them in our own countries.”

“I found GIJC2013 special for various reasons,” Aamir says. “First, it gave me an opportunity to see, hear and interact with a variety of experts ranging from investigative reporters to security experts and from war reporters to senior editors. Being a mid-career investigative reporter, it was a great experience for me to hear and learn from them both during the sessions and at the sidelines. To learn about use of the latest techniques, especially how to exploit databases, and research was another benefit I got. The most exciting moment for me was when I talked about drone strikes and its impact from the point of view of investigative reporting, as a panelist at a session, and scores of eyes and ears were at me. Yet another advantage for me was the new contacts I developed during this conference. Now I am in touch with various investigative journalists around the globe who want my help.” After the Rio conference, Aamir began a new project writing for Anadolu, the state news agency of Turkey. Check out his latest investigation about Taliban and Afghan families coexisting in Islambad: “The Taliban and the Kabul government may be at war in neighboring Afghanistan, but in the Pakistani capital Islamabad their families live side by side in peace.”

GIC13 Media Coverage Between October and November 2013, the Global Investigative Journalism Conference received extraordinary coverage around the world.
