Lord Stanley of Preston

• Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby, (Lord Stanley of Preston) was born in London, England on January 15, 1841.

• Was schooled at famous Eton College and Sandhurst.

• Married Lady Constance Villiers, daughter of the Earl of Clarendon and had ten children.

• Many of them became fond of the game of hockey in Canada.

• He died June 14, 1908

Governor General (1888-1893)• The Governor General serves as the representative of the Canadian

Monarch (king or queen). The queen at the time was Queen Victoria.

• Since the establishment of the Dominion of Canada in 1867; the Governor General has remained as a symbolic representative of the Crown and of the British Government, while actual political power is given to the Prime Minister of Canada.

• Since Canada is a constitutional monarchy, the Governor General's role is almost always limited to ceremonial and public relation functions but the position is also a significant symbol and reminder of Canada’s connection to Great Britain.

• The monarch appoints the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada. From 1867 to 1952, every Governor General was a subject of the United Kingdom. After this date the position was filled by Canadians and became officially the Canadian Governor General and now the Prime-Minister forwards one recommended name and is appointed.

Stanley Peak

Stanley Peak is a mountain located in the Northeastern section of Kootenay National Park

Lifetime Accomplishments• Lord Stanley was ranked 95th in the 100 Greatest Canadians survey done by

the CBC in 2004 as a nationwide poll

• He was knighted in the Most Noble Order of the Garter

• He was a Knight Grand Cross in the Order of the Bath

• Was a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order

• The famous Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia is named after him.

• Stanley Peak in British Columbia (mountain) is also named after him

• Member of the British House of Commons (1885-1886)

• Appointed as the Secretary of State for the Colonies (1885-1886)

• Became Baron Stanley of Preston in 1886

• Served as the Governor General of Canada (1888-1893)

• Donated the most famous trophy in hockey in 1892, the Stanley Cup.

• Succeeded his father as 16th Earl of Derby in April, 1893 and left Canada

• Was voted into the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame as a Builder in 1945.

Stanley Park

Stanley Park is a 4 km² (1 000 acres) park located near downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The park is the third largest urban park in North America, featuring many huge Douglas-fir, Western Redcedar,

and Western Hemlock trees.

The Stanley Cup

"I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion of Canada. There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team." The Stanley Cup• In 1892, Lord Stanley donated a decorative

silver cup to be presented to the best team in Canadian amateur hockey. It was originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. This cup is now known as the Stanley Cup and is the most important award in professional hockey.

• It was awarded for the first time in 1893 to the Montreal Wanderers of the Montreal AAA system of the Amateur Hockey Association (AHA)

• Prior to the 1917 the Stanley Cup was a challenge cup. After 1917 it was awarded to the champions of the National Hockey League. The first winner of the Stanley Cup as NHL champions were the Toronto Arenas in 1917-1918 when they defeated the Vancouver Millionaires

• Lord Stanley's name is a fitting tribute to his encouragement and love of outdoor life and sport in Canada. In recognition of this, Lord Stanley was inducted into the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame in the “Honoured Builders” category

Lord Stanley made some rules for the trophy and how the winner was to be decided. Here are some of those rules:

• The Cup acted as the league championship of the league that the champion belonged in

• The Cup was not the property of any given team at any given time.

• The Cup champions have the responsibility to return the Cup in good condition when required by the trustees.

• The Cup champions could add a silver ring to the Cup to commemorate their Cup victory
