HewaseducatedatCharterhouseSchool,thenoccupyingitsoriginalsitenearSmithfield,andundertheheadmastershipofDr.Saunders,afterwardsDeanofPeterborough.Amongotherhonourshewontheschoolgoldmedalforclassicalverse,andproceededtoTrinityCollege,Oxford,whereheobtainedascholarship,graduatingFirstClassLit.Hum.,SecondClassMath.,1846.

HewentstraightfromcollegetoIndia,andservedforatimeinthe8th(TheKing's)RegimentofFoot,BombayNativeInfantry,H.I.C.ShortlyafterthishebecameaRomanCatholic,wasordainedapriest,andjoinedtheorderoftheJesuits,(SocietyofJesus),andservedasamemberoftheorderinIndia,Rome,andinSyria,whereheacquiredacolloquialcommandofArabic.[1]
HeconvincedhissuperiorstosupportamissiontotheinteriorofArabia,whichatthattimewasterraincognitatotherestoftheworld.HealsogainedthesupportoftheFrenchemperor,NapoleonIII,representingtohimthatbetterknowledgeofArabiawouldbenefitFrenchimperialisticschemesinAfricaandtheMiddleEast.

PalgravebecamefriendlywithFaisalbinTurkibinAbdullahAlSaudwhileinRiyadh,SaudiArabia.Faisal'sson,AbdulRahmaninFaisal,askedPalgravetogethimstrychnine.PalgravebelievedthatAbdulwantedittopoisonhisfather.PalgravewasaccusedofespionageandwasalmostexecutedforhisChristianbeliefs.[1]
Laterlifeanddeath
AftertravellingforayearfromSyria,throughNajd,andontoBahrainandOman,hereturnedtoEurope,wherehewroteanarrativeofhistravels.Thisnarrativebecameabestsellerandhasbeenreprintedmanytimes.Itmakesnomentionofthecovertmotivesforhisjourney.
Afterwritingthisbook,PalgravemadeyetanothervoltefaceandrenouncedtheCatholicChurchin1865.HethenenteredtheBritishForeignOfficeandwasappointedconsulatSukhumKale(Sukhumi)in1866,andmovedtoTrebizond(Trabzon)in1867.In1868hemarriedKatherine,thedaughterofGeorgeEdwardSimpson,ofNorwich,bywhomhehadthreesons.HewasappointedconsulatSt.ThomasandSt.Croixin1873,Manilain1876,andin1878inBulgaria,wherehewasappointedConsulGeneral.In1879hewasmovedtoBangkok.In1884hewasappointedMinisterResidentandConsulGeneraltoUruguay,whereheserveduntilhisdeathin1888.
