ABoUT The PhoToGrAPherThe past 10 years have brought Vincent Kneefel to more than 50 countries, where has made over 1200 dives. Underwater, he has admired the true beauty of the oceans, but he also encountered how the oceans are under threat from overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction and ocean acidification.

Vincent became passionate about the oceans when he made his first dive in the red Sea and he traveled 2 years as a scuba dive instructor around the world. After he graduated university Vincent decided to commit his life to the conservation of the oceans and started working as a professional underwater photographer. in 2009 Vincent organized rotterdam World ocean Day, a successful event with among others fabien Cousteau, Captain Paul Watson, Professor Daniel Pauly and David Doubilet. next to his work as an underwater photographer Vincent works as a sustainability consultant and researcher. Vincent advises businesses how they can become more successful by embedding sustainability into their organisation, while creating value for the company, stakeholders, future generation and the planet.

hardcover booknumber pages: 150 (12 chapters of 10 pages each) Size: 24 cm by 32 cm Press: full colour (recycled fSC paper) initial number published: 500

This coffee table book contains an overview of the best pictures shot during the 2 year project. The book is divided into 12 chapters, in each chapter one Giant is portrayed. Beside the photographic material, the book highlights background information, interviews with stakeholders, and best practice solutions.

in our modern world species are disappearing at an alarming rate. it is not only of great importance to conserve as many species possible, but also to share the stories of these unique creatures with the larger public. As part of this awareness process, underwater photographer Vincent Kneefel wants to make a difference with his project Giants of the Caribbean.

1 billion peopleDuring the last 10 years Vincent has seen the oceans change with his own eyes. Mangrove forests and coral reefs, the nurseries for most ocean life, are under heavy distress. in the last 50 years the number of fish in the ocean has decreased by 70 percent. Although the oceans constitute more than two thirds of our planet, only few people are aware of what is happening in the oceans. The oceans are becoming less resilient, and a tipping point of no return is imminent. if humans continue to overfish and pollute the oceans, marine species we know today will become extinct forever. Moreover, a billion people worldwide are dependent on fish as a primary source of protein. We have to urgently find solutions to save the oceans, and ourselves for that matter.

12 encountersThe recent developments of the oilspill in the Gulf of Mexico show us once again how urgent the transition towards a sustainable society is. While from an economic perspective the oil spill has caused widespread damage, the effect on the inhabitants of the seas around the Gulf of Mexico and the greater Caribbean remain unknown. These species, who have lived their lives in the Caribbean for thousands of years, are now under the threat of becoming extinct. During his project, Giants of the Caribbean, Vincent will come face to face with some of the most amazing inhabitants of our planet?

Giants of the Caribbean is a showcase for the beauty of the underwater world. The project aims to create awareness for ocean conservation and the need for sustainability in our daily lives. Vincent wants to inspire young people to have positive impact with their lives on their own communities and future generations. Giants of the Caribbean is a multimedia project, comprising of a book, calendar, website, movies, exhibition and presentations. The images serve to educate, inspire and motivate positive change in our society.
