OverviewHeatPipesandTwo-PhaseThermosyphonsarehighlyefficientheattransferelementswhichutilizeliquid-vapourphasechange latent heat transport. They have found wide-spread application, ranging from microelectronics cooling incomputers and satellites to large-scale waste heat recovery in various industries and power stations. Their modusoperandi comprises amultitudeofphysical phenomena like surfacephysics, microscaleheat andmass transfer, two-phasefluidmechanicsandmaterialscompatibility.Thesedevicescanbedesignedinavarietyofgeometricalshapesanddimensions (from very small cylindrical ball pen size tubes and thin flat plates over complex three-dimensionalgeometriestohugedrumorboxtypeelementsandverylong(over100m)cylindricalelements.
Due to their construction and operation principle and their geometrical design, amultitude of thermal tasks can beaccomplished, besideshighlyefficientheattransportforcoolingandheatingapplications, alsospecialtaskslikeheatfluxtransformation, provisionofisothermalspaces, thermaldiodebehaviourandmanymore.

TheFacultyProf. Manfred Groll is emeritus professor ofUniversity of Stuttgart, Germany. His researchinterests include heat pipes and two-phasethermosyphons, includingmicro and pulsating heatpipes; enhanced two-phase heat transfer, including
micro heat transfer in pool and flow boiling; hydrogen storage, sorptionheatingandcoolingsystemsemployingmetalhydrides;andnuclear safety. During 1975/76 he worked for two years at NASAAmesResearchCenter,MoffettField,CA,USAonthedevelopmentofheat pipe technology for satellite applications. He is FoundingMember of the Committee on International Heat Pipe Conferences(1973),actedasCommitteeChairmanfrom1990till2004,andsince2004 he is Honorary Chairman. In 2013 he has been awarded theprestigiousGeorgeGroverMedalforoutstandingcontributiontothedevelopmentofheatpipescienceandtechnology.
