FEATURED DESIGN PROJECTS

Heritage Buildings • Wellington Building Renovation (Recognized Federal Heritage

Building), Ottawa, Canada: Seismic Evaluation, Upgrade, and Fit-up Role: Lead Structural Engineer Estimated cost: $452 million CAD Year Originally Built: 1927 and 1959 Size: 43,725 square-metres Project Completion: In progress

Wellington Building is a designated heritage building, constructed in two phases: 1927 and 1959. The building includes 3 independent structures, separated by expansion joints. The project includes renovation and upgrade of the building to house parliamentary offices and committee meeting rooms, and seismic upgrade to meet NBC2005. The design solution includes demolition of a large interior section of the building, and reconstruction of this section to incorporate all the seismic resisting elements, and large open spaces for the Multi-Purpose Rooms. The seismic and wind design was completed for both the final building configuration, as well as the intermediate construction phase, with a large section of the building

demolished. Structural seismic upgrade and exterior wall seismic stabilization (phase I) is completed.

• West Memorial Building (Recognized Federal Heritage Building), Ottawa, Canada: Seismic Evaluation Role: Senior Design Engineer / Seismic Engineer Year Originally Built: 1956

West Memorial Building is a designated heritage building, constructed in 1956. It is a seven storey building, primarily composed of concrete slabs supported on concrete beams and concrete columns.

• Confederation Building (Recognized Federal Heritage

Building), Ottawa, Canada: Seismic Evaluation Role: Senior Structural Engineer/Seismic Engineer Project Completion: Completed This Options Analysis Report has been developed under the Recapitalization Program to address building envelope (roof, masonry and windows), and structural problems at an early stage of the conservation. and to develop a long-term implementation strategy. The structural assessment was based on the original structural drawings of the building, review of previous reports, visual review of the façades, and new exploratory openings completed. The structural analysis addressed condition of the masonry, condition of the embedded structural steel components, anchorage of the exterior wall to the building structure, and stability of the wall under seismic loads.

• The Parliament of Canada East Block Masonry Towers (Recognized Federal Heritage Building), Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Canada: Seismic Evaluation and Upgrade Role: Senior Structural Engineer/Seismic Engineer Project Completion: In progress

• The Parliament of Canada Centre Block (Recognized Federal Heritage Building), Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Canada: Seismic Evaluation and Upgrade Role: Senior Structural Engineer/Seismic Engineer Project Completion: In progress The Centre Block and Peace Tower on Parliament Hill building is a “Classified” heritage structure and is considered the most important building in Canada.

Hangar 11 is a balanced and symmetrical building composed of an arched, long span hangar space, flanking lateral offices tucked into the sides of the arch and a central entrance, all bracketed by two large masonry pocket door towers. Hangar 11 is a large, prominent building located on the edge of a flying field at the former CFB Ottawa-Uplands and the current Ottawa International Airport. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Complete fit-up of the main reception area. Reception/Visitor Centre area is for VIP persons visiting Canada. Major structural portion of the work included partial reconstruction and seismic upgrade to one of the large hangar door wells which consists of block masonry and brick construction.

• Lansdowne Park – Horticulture Building (Recognized

Federal Heritage Building), Ottawa, Canada: Seismic Evaluation, Upgrade, and Fit-up Role: Lead Structural Engineer Project Completion: In progress The Horticultural Building has a long-standing tie with the Central Canada Exhibition, which was founded in 1888 and is the oldest continuously operating agricultural fair in Canada. The Horticulture Building was completed in 1914 just in time for that year's opening of the exhibition. As one of eight exhibition buildings on the grounds of Lansdowne Park in Ottawa, the Horticultural Building occupies a key portion of the exhibition grounds adjacent to the steel clad Aberdeen Pavilion. In addition to serving the annual Exhibition, this building also served a second function as a public curling rink during the winter season.

TEACHING INTERESTS

Over eight years of experience as a senior engineer in structural design, seismic upgrade, rehabilitation and renovation of several residential, commercial, recreational, heritage and specialty projects (international and nationwide), as well as six years of experience as a field engineer, has provided Dr. Fathifazl with valuable skills and insights into some of the problems currently facing engineering education. Therefore, Dr. Fathifazl is fully prepared to teach the following wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses: [1] Reinforced and Pre-stressed Concrete Design [2] Advanced Reinforced Concrete Structures [3] Structural Analysis [4] Mechanics of Solids [5] Application of Underutilized Materials in Structures [6] Material Science of Civil Engineering Materials [7] Cement and Concrete Technology [8] Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures
