    Ghayat ut Tahqiq fi Imamat il Ali was Siddiq is an important

    book in refutation of an astray sect known as Tafziliya authored by the

    Mujaddid of Islam, the meticulous Faqih, the establisher of Sunnah and the

    slayer of Biddah, Imam al Akbar Sayyidi Ahmad Raza Khan Quadri

    Bareilvi. This book was written in answer to questions posed by a scholarly

    Sufi Shaykh from the great Zaydi Sayyids of Marehrah, India.

    The Tafziliya is a sect from amongst the Rawafiz or Shiya with the most

    resemblance and proximity to the Ahl Ahl Ahl Ahl us Sunnah wal Jamahus Sunnah wal Jamahus Sunnah wal Jamahus Sunnah wal Jamah in Doctrinal

    matters. The main characteristic features of this sect are as follows,

    1.They consider Sayyiduna Ali bin Abu Talib to be more meritorious in

    status and proximity to Allah Almighty than the first three Khulafa, that

    is, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq , Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab and

    Sayyiduna Usman bin Affan . Unlike, the normal Rawafiz they also

    hold these three Khulafa to be rightly guided, accept their Khilafa and

    do not disparage them in any way.

    This is their major and fundamental Doctrine {Aqidah} that is, giving

    Merits and Status {Tafzil} to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abu Talib more than the

    first three Khulafa. Therefore, they have been named as Tafziliya. There are some other characteristic features which may or may not be

    present in some groups of Tafziliya.

    2.Some disparage Sayyiduna Amir Muawiya because of his skirmishes

    with Sayyiduna Ali in the Battle of Siffin (36 A.H), his proclaiming of

    Khilafa and sometimes because of his son Yazid bin Muawiya!

    The above is another additive major doctrinal characteristic of the

    Tafziliya. While other minor features are as follows,

    3.Some hold; rather exert all their might to declare Abu Talib - the father

    of Sayyiduna Ali as a Muslim.

    4.Some practise Taziya, Alam and hold Marsiya or Shahadah

    gatherings just like mainstream Rawafiz.

    The Tafziliya are the stepping stone towards becoming Rawafiz in many

    ways for the people of Ahl us Sunnah because of its similarity with the

    Ahl us Sunnah in all the major Doctrines {Aqayid} and Practices {Amal}

    except the above mentioned! The Tafziliya has much influence on some

    of the ignorant masses of Muslims in the Indian Sub-continent especially

    the ignorant and fake Sufis penetrating them on the basis of love of

    Sayyiduna Ali , the Ahl ul Bayt and in some cases genealogical

    affiliations with the Ahl ul Bayt.

    For the Sufis affected with the astrayness of the Tafziliya, we shall quote

    the following:

    1.The giant Sufi Chishti Scholar of India, who belonged to the Ahl ul Bayt

    of the Prophet - Ghawth al Alam Makhum Sayyid Ashraf Jahangir Simnani

    writes: We Believe in Allah and His Prophet ]. We also believe in the

    merits of all the companions {Sahaba} of the Prophet ] and also declare

    that the most worthy of Khilafa and also the most meritorious in status

    among all the Muslims was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr bin Quhafa , then

    Sayyiduna Umar , then Sayyiduna Usman and then Sayyiduna Ali .

    All my disciples, brothers, lovers and followers / devotees should

  • remember that we used to believe in this, still believe and will believe

    forever! It is the Hadith of the Prophet ] that: The man will

    die in the state in which passes his life and he will be

    resurrected in the state in which he died! The one whose Doctrine

    {Aqidah} is not as above is astray and misguided. We are discontented with

    them and Allah Almighty is displeased with them! {Hujjat uz Zakirin & Risala Qabriya; 19}

    2.Sayyid Ahmad Husayni Chishti , another giant Sufi Chishti Shaykh and

    the son of the Qutb ul Islam Sayyid Muhammad Husayni Gaysu Daraz

    Banda Nawaz writes similarly in his famous book Kitab ul Aqayid

    regarding this matter of Tafzil.

    3.Imam Ahmad Raza Khan quotes another Sufi Chishti-Quadri research

    authority of the Indian subcontinent Mir Sayyid Abdul Wahid Husayni

    Zaydi Bilgirami from his famous book Saba Sanabil in this Fatwa,

    that is, Ghayat ut Tahqiq, the translation of which can be read in the

    following pages.

    This has been summed up to declare that the noble Sufiya of the

    Quadriya and Chishtiya Tariqahs of the Indian subcontinent have long

    back clarified and expounded the matter of Tafzil in their respective

    books and discourses according to the Doctrine {Aqidah} of Ahl us Sunnah Ahl us Sunnah Ahl us Sunnah Ahl us Sunnah

    wal Jamahwal Jamahwal Jamahwal Jamah. May Allah Almighty sanctify their states and secrets! Amin!

    It is the Consensus {Ijma} of the Scholars of Islam that the Tafziliya are

    not Disbelievers {Kafir}, but are actually innovators, astray and misguided.

    This legal opinion is only regarding the Tafziliya with the first

    characteristic feature mentioned above, while the legal ruling as regards to

    other groups of Tafziliya change according to the combination and

    intensity of their different doctrines mentioned above!

    Apart from Ghayat ut Tahqiq, the great Imam Ahmad Raza Khan

    authored no less than 20 books in refutation of the Rawafiz or Shiya and

    Tafziliya, the details of which are as follows: Radd al Rafazah

    refuting the Rafizis that a Sunni can neither inherit from nor marry them;

    Al Adilla al Taina fi Adhan al Malaina refuting the Rafizi Azan

    and the belief of Khalifa bila Fasl; Iali al Ifaza fi Taziyati al-Hind wa

    Bayan al Shahada the ruling on Taziya and the transmitting of

    the Shahada; Jazaa Allah Aduwwa bi Ibanihi Khatm al Nubuwwa

    refuting the Mirzais and Rafizis; Al Kalam al Bahi fi Tashbih al

    Siddiq bi al Nabi the similarities of Sayyiduna Siddiq Akbar

    with the Beloved Prophet; Al Zulal al Anqa min Bahri Sabqat al Atqa

    the Tafsir of the verse Inna akramakum indallahi atqakum and

    the qualities of Sayyiduna Siddiq Akbar; Matla al-Qamarayn fi Ibanati

    Sabqat al Umarayn a detailed work on the precedence and merits

    of Shaykhayn; Wajh al Mashuq bi Jalwat Asma al Siddiq wa al Faruq

    the names of Shaykhayn that are in the Hadith; Jama al Quran

    wa Bima Azawhu al Uthman how the Quran was compiled and

    why Sayyiduna Uthman is specifically called Jami ul Quran; Al Bushra al

    Ajila min Tuhafa Ajila refuting the Tafziliya and insulters of

    Sayyiduna Amir Muawiya; Arshu al Izaz wa al Ikram li Awwali Maluk al

    Islam the merits of Sayyiduna Amir Muawiya; Dhabbu al

    Ahwai al Wahiya fi Babi al Amir Muawiya answering the

    insulters of Sayyiduna Amir Muawiya; Ahlam al Sahabati al Muwafiqin li

    al Amir Muawiya wa Umm al Muminin which companions

    were with Umm ul Muminin and Sayyiduna Amir Muawiya; Al Ahadith

    al Rawiya li Madhi al Amir Muawiya the Hadiths that mention

    the Merits of Sayyiduna Amir Muawiya; Al Jaruhu al Walij fi Batni al

    Khawarij refuting the Tafziliya and the transgressive amongst

  • them; Al Samsam al Haydari ala Humqi al Ayyari al Muftari

    refuting the Tafziliya and the transgressive amongst them; Al Raihatu al

    Anbariya an al Jamrati al Haydariya the issue of Tafzil in all

    aspects; Lamat al Shama li Huda Shiyat al Shana answering 7

    questions on Tafzil and Tafsiq; Sharh al Matalib fi Mabhath Abi Talib

    proving from 130 books of Tafsir and Aqidah that Abu Talib did

    not accept Islam!

    Bab Amir al Muawiya; Hakim ul Ummah Ashraf ul Mufassirin Mufti

    Ahmad Yaar Khan Ashrafi Nayimi who authored Amir Muawiya; and

    Ghazi al Millat Sayyid Hashmi Ashrafi Jilani Kichochavi who authored

    Amir Muawiya- Khalifat ur Rashid, etc.

    In following lines, we are presenting a Fatwa of Imam Ahmad Raza Khan

    on performing Prayers {Salah} behind the Tafziliya because of its

    relevance with this book and its importance in present times of rampant

    heresies.

    It is the unanimous belief of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah that Sayyidina

    Abu Bakr al-Siddiq is the best of men after the Prophets 6. Zayd and

    Khalid are both Sayyids. Zayd says that whoever gives precedence to Ali

    over Abu Bakr Siddiq ; Salah behind such a person is Makruh. Khalid

    says that I openly proclaim that Ali has precedence over Abu Bakr

    Siddiq and every Sayyid is Tafzili and Salah behind Tafzilis is not

    Makruh. Moreover, whoever says that Salah behind Tafzilis is Makruh;

    then Salah behind such a person is itself Makruh.

    AnswerAnswerAnswerAnswer:::: There is a consensus of all Ahlus Sunnah that Siddiq Akbar

    and Faruq Azam are greater than Mawla Ali karramAllahu taala

    wajhahul karim. It has been explained by the Imams that whoever gives

    precedence to Mawla Ali upon these two is an innovator and heretic

    and Salah behind such a person is Makruh. Fatawa Khulasa, Fath al-Qadir,

    Bahr al-Raiq and Fatawa Alamgiri and many other books have it: Inna

    fadla Aliyyan alaihima famubtadi (If someone gives precedence to Ali

    over Siddiq and Faruq, he is a Mubtadi). It is in Ghunya and Radd al-

    Muhtar: Salah behind a heretic is Makruh in all cases. It is in Arkan

    Arbaa: Salah behind Tafzili Shiya is strongly prohibited. Strongly

    prohibited means Makruh Tahrimi; performing it is a sin and it is Wajib to

    repeat. And Allah taala knows best.

    I am highly great-full and thankful to Mawlana Sayyid Sajjad Quadri

    Amiri, the founder of Noori Foundation who has patiently waited for the

    translation of this important book and for undertaking the responsibility

    its publication from his dynamic organisation. May Allah Almighty reward

    Successor at the time of his demise or at any other time?

    Successor-ship and Deputyship is of Two (2) types;

    Firstly:Firstly:Firstly:Firstly: Partly Confined; Such that the Imam appoints someone as his

    Deputy on a temporary basis for a particular job at a particular place for a

    stipulated period of time. For example, a king who sends someone as a

    chief of an army for fighting or giving someone the governorship of a

    province or appointing someone for the collection of Taxes {Khiraj} or

    giving out the administration of a city to some one while going out. Such

    types of giving Deputyship by the Beloved Prophet ] {Purnur, Sayyid Yawm un

    Nushur} have occurred numerous times.

    As in some Battles {Ghazwat}, Amir ul Muminin Siddiq al Akbar ; in

    some Battles, Sayyiduna Usama bin Zayd . In the Battles of Zat ul Salasil

    Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas was sent as the Chief of the Army. For the

    Collection of Zakah {Yearly Alms due for poor}, Amir ul Muminin Faruq al

    Azam and Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid , etc were appointed by the

    Prophet ]. This was also certainly a Deputyship of the Prophet ], because

    the Collection of Charity {Sadqat} is also in reality the duty of the Prophet

    ]. Allah Almighty says:

    The Prophet ] appointed numerous Respected Teachers and the great

    Martyrs {Qurra e Ikram Shuhada e Izzam} for the teaching of the Holy Quran

    and Religion {Deen}. The appointment of Sayyiduna Attab bin Usayd as

    the governor of Makkah Muazama, Sayyiduna Muaz bin Jabal for the

    Protector-ship {Wilaayat} of Janad, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ashari for

    Zabeed and Adan , Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan - the father of

    Sayyiduna Amir Muawiya or Sayyiduna Amr bin Hazm for the city

    of Najran, Sayyiduna Ziyad bin Labeed for Hazralmawt, Sayyiduna

    Khalid Saeed Amwi for Sanaa, and deputising the administration of

    The giving of governorship of the Yemen province to Sayyiduna Bazan bin

    Sabasan Kiyani Mughal . The appointment of Amir ul Muminin Mawla

    Ali Karam Allahu Wajh to the post of Judgeship {Qada} of the province of

    Yemen. The appointing of Sayyiduna Attab in 8 Hijri and Sayyiduna

    Siddiq al Akbar in 9 Hijri as the Leader of Pilgrims {Amir ul Haaj} are

    other examples of such deputyship by the Prophet ].

  • Sometimes, Amir ul Muminin Faruq al Azam , sometimes Sayyiduna

    Muqil bin Yasar and sometimes Sayyiduna Uqba was given the post

    of Judgeship {Qada}. The Appointing of Amir ul Muminin Ali Murtaza

    the Leader {Amir} and Protector {Wali} of the people of the Prophets ]

    Household {Ahl ul Bayt} while going to the Battle of Tabuk and appointing

    of Sayyiduna Abu Lubaba at the time of Battle of Badr;

    Similarly, during 13 other Battles and Journeys, the appointing of

    Sayyiduna Amr bin Umm Maktum as the Leader {Amir} and Protector

    {Wali} of Madinah Tayyiba. For example, the Battle of Abwa which was

    also the first Battle of the Prophet ], the Battle of Bawat, the Battle of Zhil

    Ubbarah, the Battle of Talb Karz bin Jabir, the Battle of Suwayq, the Battle

    of Ghatfan, the Battle of Uhad, the Battle of Hamra al Asad, the Battle of

    Najran, the Battle of Zat ur Riqa and the Journey of the Last Pilgrimage

    {Hajjat ul Wada} which was also the last journey of the Prophet ].

    We have summarised all this from Sahih Bukhari and its Annotations and

    Explanations {Shuruh}, Mawahib La Dunya bil Manah il Muhammadiya

    and its Annotation and Explanation {Sharh} by Zarqani and Al

    Isaba fi Tameez is Sahaba by Hafiz Ibn Hajr Asqalani. May Allah have

    Mercy upon all of them!

    Secondly:Secondly:Secondly:Secondly: Completely Absolute {Kulli Mutlaq}; this is not proven from the

    different chronicles and phases of the life . That is, the

    declaration of someone to the rank of the Supreme Leadership {Imamat al

    Kubra} by the Imam after his demise in the form of a Will or Testament.

    The clear evidence {Nass} in the form of public declaration or

    announcement with the clarification of name was not given for anyone by

    the Prophet ] , otherwise the respected Sahaba would have

    surely conveyed and the Quraysh and Ansar would not have conducted

    discussions, meetings and debates on the matter of Successor-ship

    {Khilafat}!

    It is proven from Amir ul Muminin Imam ul Ashjayin Asad Allahu al

    Ghalib Ali Murtaza Karam Allahu Wajh ul Kareem through Strong Authentic

    Chains of Narration {Asanid us Sahiha} that when it was said to him: Appoint

    someone as Ruler {Khalifa} upon us. He said: I will not appoint anyone as

    Ruler {Khalifa} but will leave the matter just as Rasul Allah ] had left it!

    Imam Ahmad has narrated this with a Hasan Sanad {Good Chain of Narrators}

    and Imam Bazaz through a Qawi Sanad {Strong Chain of Narrators}, while

    Imam Darqutni etc have also narrated it. {Musnad Imam Ahmad; 1:130}

    In the Hadith narrated by Imam Bazaz through an Authentic Sanad,

    Sayyiduna Mawla Ali Karam Allahu taala Wajh said: Rasul Allah ] did not

    appoint anyone as Ruler {Khalifa}, so that I can do . {As

    Sawaiq ul Muharriqa; 70}

    In the Hadith narrated by Imam Darqutni, He said: We

    went to Rasul Allah ] and said: Appoint someone as Khalifa upon us.

  • The Prophet ] said: No! If Allah Wills goodness amongst you, then He

    will make the one who is the best amongst you as Ruler {Waali} upon you!

    Sayyiduna Mawla Ali Karam Allahu Wajh said: The Lord of Dignity {Rabb ul

    Izzat} the Possessor of Might and Power, Wished Goodness amongst us,

    thus Abu Bakr was made our Ruler {Waali}. {As Sawaiq ul Muharriqa; 70}

    Imam Ishaq bin Ruhuya, Imam Darqutni, Imam Ibn Asakir, etc through

    numerous different Channels {Turuq} and Chains of Narrations {Asanid}

    have narrated that: Two persons during the Ruler-ship {Khilafat} of Amir

    ul Muminin Mawla Ali Karam Allahu Wajh ul Kareem asked him in

    his court: Is this the covenant or testament, the position and resolution of

    the Prophet ] or is it your Opinion? He said: It is my

    Opinion!

    And if you say that the Prophet ] had given a Testament regarding me,

    then by Allah, it is not so! I am the first to testify the Prophet ] but will not be the first to slander him!

    And if by any means, I had any testament from the Prophet ] then I

    would have not permitted Abu Bakr and to mount

    the Pulpit {Mimbar} of the Prophet ] and verily would have fought them

    even if I did not had the support of anyone except this mantle of mine!

    And Allah Forbid! Rasul Allah ] was not killed nor did he died suddenly,

    but he passed many days and nights in illness, the Caller for

    Prayer {Muazzin} used to come and inform about the time of Prayers, and

    the Prophet ] used to command Abu Bakr to lead in the

    Prayers though I used to be present before the Prophet ]. Then, again

    when the Caller for Prayers used to come and inform about the time of

    Prayer, the Prophet ] again used to command Abu Bakr to lead

    the Prayers, though I was not absent from him!

    And By Allah! One amongst the pious and pure Wives of the Prophet ]

    {Azwaj e Mutahharat} wanted this matter to be turned

    away from Abu Bakr, but the Prophet ] did not listen and

    became angry and said: You are like the women during Yusuf!

    Go and command Abu Bakr to lead people in Prayer! Thus, when the

    Prophet ] died, we glanced at our worldly affairs i.e. Ruler-ship {Khialfat}

    and elected the one whom the Prophet ] selected for our Religious affairs

    ! As Prayer was the greatest of deeds in Islam and the pillar of

    our Religion. Therefore, we gave our Pledge of Allegiance {Baiyah} to

    Abu Bakr for he was worthy of it and none of us was opposed to

    him! After narrating all this, Sayyiduna Ali Karam Allahu Wajhil Asna said:

    Thus, I gave Abu Bakr his Right and regarded his following

    obligatory, I accompanied his armies and participated in Jihads, when he

    used to give me something from the treasury, I used to take it and when he

    used to send me on wars, I used to go and used to punish people according

    to his orders. Then, he said the same regarding

    Amir ul Muminin Faruq al Azam and Amir ul Muminin Usman al

    Ghani . {Tarikh Dimishq Kabir; 45: 337-339}

  • Though the Prophet ] gave many refined and clear indications ; For example:

    1. Once the Beloved Rasul Allah ] said: While I was sleeping, I saw

    myself standing at a well, on it was a bucket. I drew water from the well as

    much as Allah willed. Then Ibn Abi Quhafa {i.e. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as Siddiq }

    took the bucket from me and drew one or two buckets and there

    was weakness in his drawing the water. May Allah forgive his weakness

    for him. Then the bucket turned into a big one and Ibn al Khattab {i.e.

    Sayyiduna Umar al Faruq } took it over and I had never seen such a mighty

    person amongst the people as him in performing such hard work, till the

    People drank to their satisfaction and watered their camels that knelt

    down there. This has been narrated by Shaykhayn {Imam Bukhari & Imam

    Muslim} from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin

    Umar . {Sahih Bukhari, Kitab Fazail Ashab un Nabi; 1:517, 519, 520}

    2. Amir ul Muminin Mawla Ali Karam Allahu Wajh ul Kareem said: I heard the

    Prophet ] saying multiple times: I, Abu Bakr and Umar were some

    where. I, Abu Bakr and Umar did some thing. I, Abu Bakr and Umar set out

    . So, I hope that Allah will keep you with both of them. I

    turned back to see , the speaker was Ali bin Abu

    Talib. {Ala Hazrat wrote this Hadith in a different style} This has been narrated by

    Shaykhayn from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas . {Sahih Bukhari, Fazail Ashab

    un Nabi; 1:519}

    3. Once the Beloved Rasul Allah ] said: Last night, a Good man had a dream, in which Sayyiduna Abu Bakr seemed to be

    joined to the Good man , Sayyiduna Umar to Sayyiduna Abu

    Bakr and Sayyiduna Usman to Sayyiduna Umar. Sayyiduna Jabir said:

    When we got up and left Rasul Allah ], we said: The Good man is Rasul

    Allah ] and their being joined together means that they are the rulers

    over us in these matters which Allah has sent His Prophet ] with. This

    has been narrated by Imam Abu Dawud and Imam Hakim from Sayyiduna

    Jabir bin Abdullah . {Sunan Abu Dawud, Kitab us Sunnah; 2:281}

    4. Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik said: I was sent by Bani al Mustalliq to

    the Prophet ] to ask him that after his demise, to whom should we send

    our Zakah. The Prophet ] said: To Abu Bakr, I said if he meets with

    some accident then to whom? The Prophet ] said: To Umar, I said if

    something also happens to him then? The Prophet ] said: To Usman.

    Hakim narrated this Hadith in Mustadrak from Sayyiduna Anas

    bin Malik and said its Chain of Narrators is Authentic {Sahih ul Isnad}.

    {Mustadrak al Hakim; 3:77}

    5. A woman came to Rasul Allah ] and asked something, who ordered her

    to return to him afterwards, she asked: What if I come and did not find

    you? The Prophet ] said: If you cant find me, then go to Abu Bakr. This

    has been narrated by Shaykhayn from Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mutim .

  • 6. Similarly, The Prophet ] said to a man: If I am not present, then go to

    Abu Bakr. The man asked: If I cant find him. The Prophet ] said: To

    Umar. The man asked: If I cant find him even. The Prophet ] said: To

    Usman. This has been narrated by Imam Abu Nuaym in Hilya and Imam

    Tibrani from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Haythama . {Izalat ul Khafa; 1:124}

    7. Once the Prophet ] bought some camels on credit from a person, while

    he was returning Sayyiduna Ali bin Abu Talib met him and asked him

    his reason for visit, he informed the later about the reason. Sayyiduna Ali

    bin Abu Talib asked that person to enquire from the Prophet ] that: If

    something outward happens to the Prophet ] then who will repay the

    credit? The Prophet ] replied: Abu Bakr! Then Sayyiduna Ali again

    made him asked: What if something outward happens to Abu Bakr, who

    will repay the credit? The Prophet ] replied: Umar! Then again

    Sayyiduna Ali made him ask a similar question that: What if something

    outward happens to Umar, who will repay the credit? The Prophet ]

    said: O Silly! If Umar dies, then Die if you can! This has been narrated by

    Imam Tibrani in Mujam Kabir from Sayyiduna Asima bin Malik and

    Imam Jalaluddin Suyuti has graded this Hadith as Good {Hasan}. {Mujam ul

    Kabir; 17:181}

    8. And amongst the clear indications given by the Prophet ] is the

    appointment of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq al Akbar as the Imam of

    the Muslims in his own place during his death illness and not agreeing,

    rather becoming angry even on the proposal of appointing someone other

    than Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiqs to the position of Imam as explicitly

    pointed out by Amir ul Muminin Ali Karam Allahu Wajh ul Karim in the

    statement: Rasul Allah ] selected him for

    our Religious affairs, should we not select him as for our

    worldly affairs as-well! {As Sawayiq ul Muharriqa; 43, 71, 93}

    9. And the most clear in luminance and explicit evidence is that sacred

    statement of the Beloved Prophet ] which Imam Ahmad and Imam

    Tirmizi have narrated as Good {Hasan}; and Imam Ibn Majah, Imam Ibn

    Hibban and Imam Hakim have narrated as Authentic {Sahih}; and Abul

    Mahasin Ruyani has narrated from Sayyiduna Huzayfa bin Yaman ;

    Imam Tirmizi and Imama Hakim narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin

    Masud ; and Imam Tibrani narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Darda ; and

    Imam Ibn Adi in Al Kamil narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik

    that the Beloved Rasul Allah ] said: I do not know until when I will stay

    amongst you! Therefore, I command you to follow Abu Bakr after me.

    {Jami Tirmizi, Abwab ul Manaqib; 2:207,221}

    command you to follow my two companions after me; Abu Bakr and

    Umar! {Al Kamil Ibn Adi; 2:666}

    10. Once, the Prophet ] during his last illness wanted to clarify this

    matter but feeling it unnecessary, he left it upon the

  • Muslims to decide. Imam Ahmad, Imam Bukhari, and Imam Muslim

    narrate from Umm ul Muminin Siddiqa % -the Beloved of the Prophet ]

    that she said: The death- illness in which the Prophet ] was about to die,

    he commanded me: Call your brother and father so that I write for them

    my will, for I fear that a person who has desire may desire or the one who

    wants to declare may declare that he more worthy ! And Allah

    Almighty will not accept him nor will the Muslims will accept him , except Abu Bakr! {Sahih Bukhari, Kitab ul Marzi; 2: 846 & Kitab ul Ahkam; 2:1072}

    The words as mentioned by Imam Ahmad in another version of the Hadith

    are: Call Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakr so that I can write a will /

    command in favour of Abu Bakr so that no one differs with him ! Then the Prophet ] said: Leave it ! Can the Muslims differ regarding Abu Bakr ! Allah

    Forbid! {Musnad Imam Ahmad; 6:47}

    Was Sayyiduna Ali more meritorious {Afzal} than the Three

    Khulafa or not?

    It is the Consensus {Ijma} of the Ahl us Sunnah wal Jamah May Allah

    Almighty protect them, that the Four Khulafa are more meritorious

    {Afzal}than the whole creation of Allah Almighty after the Prophets &

    Messengers among Humans and the Messengers among the Angels! No

    one from the first to the last of the creations can reach to their noble

    status, greatness, excellence, praiseworthiness, marvels, merits and

    sainthood {Wilayah}!

And that (His) Grace is (entirely) in His Hand to bestow it on whomsoever And that (His) Grace is (entirely) in His Hand to bestow it on whomsoever And that (His) Grace is (entirely) in His Hand to bestow it on whomsoever And that (His) Grace is (entirely) in His Hand to bestow it on whomsoever

    Then, amongst them, the sequence of merits is such that Sayyiduna Siddiq

    al Akbar is the most meritorious, then Sayyiduna Faruq al Azam ,

    then Sayyiduna Usman al Ghani and then Sayyiduna Ali . There are

    numerous evidences and solid proofs in the form of Ayahs of the Holy

    Quran, Hadiths of the Beloved Rasul Allah ], explicit sayings of Amir ul

    Muminin Sayyiduna Ali Murtaza and other noble Imams of the pure

    Ahl ul Bayt, the consensus of the respected Sahaba and great Tabayin, the

    explanatory statements of the pious Awliya Allah and Scholars of the

    Muslim Ummah on this particular matter such that their summarization is

  • impossible in these lines. Faqir May Allah Pardon Me, has written a

    voluminous book on this matter spanning two great volumes and named it

    chronologically as Matla al Qamarayn fi Ibanati Sibqat il Umarayn . Then I wrote an extensive monologue on the Tafsir of the Ayah Inna

    Akramakum Indallahi Atqakum (The most Respectful near Allah are the

    ones with most Piety) proving the immense merits of Sayyiduna Siddiq al

    Akbar and answering the various doubts which may arise from this

    Ayah, naming it chronologically as Al Zalal ul Anqa min Bahri Sibqat il

    Atqa , therefore, the details may be seen in them. But here, I shall

    present some statements of the Imams of Ahl ul Bayt!

    May Allah Almightys Mercy and Blessing be on the Amir ul Muminin Ali

    the speaker, supporter and promoter of truth for he has clarified the

    problem of Merits of Four Khulafa {Tafzil} elaborately numerous times

    during his tenure as Khalifa, on the seat of power, on the pulpits of the

    Masjids, in gatherings as well as in private meetings such that the merits of

    Shaykhayn over himself

    and the Ummah of the Beloved Prophet ] has become explicitly clear to

    us leaving no doubt or confusion nor providing any space for rejection of

    truth in this matter. In-fact, he declared the one opposing him in this

    matter as a slanderer {Muftari} and ordered to be punished with eighty

    lashes!

    There are more than Eighty Sahaba and Tabayin who narrate from

    Sayyiduna Ali in these matters as was written by Imam Ibn Hajr Makki

    in Sawayiq ul Muharriqa: Zahabi said: It is mass narrated that

    during the period of Amir ul Muminin Ali Murtaza when he was in

    the seat of power, he openly described the merits of Shaykhayn publicly in his gatherings. It is

    said that more than eighty people have narrated this matter from him.

    Zahabi has mentioned the names of few and then said, May Allah

    punish the Rawafiz {i.e. Shiyas/ Shites} for their ignorance. {As Sawayiq ul

    Muharriqa; 90-91}

    Even some Shiya writers like Abdur Razzakh Muhaddith the compiler

    of Musannaf supports the merits of Shaykhayn

    though himself being a Shiya and said: When Sayyiduna Ali gives

    them merit over himself, then how can I reject his Aqidah, is this sin little

    that I claim to love Sayyiduna Ali and then differ with him? It is in

    Sawayiq ul Muharriqa that:

    How excellent is the school which some Shiya authors have chosen like

    Abdur Razzakh for he has said: I hold Shaykhayn more meritorious than

    Sayyiduna Ali because he himself held them more meritorious !

    Otherwise, I would not have given them merit over Sayyiduna Ali , is

    this sin little that I claim to love Sayyiduna Ali and then differ with

    him? {As Sawayiq ul Muharriqa; 93}

  • Now, read some Hadiths of Sayyiduna Ali :

    1.Sayyiduna ibn Sayyiduna Imam Muhammad bin Hanafiya the son

    of Sayyiduna Ali narrates in Sahih Bukhari that: I asked my father

    , Who are the Best people after Rasul Allah ]? He

    said: Abu Bakr. I asked: Who then? He said: Then Umar. {Sahih Bukhari;

    Kitab Fazail Ashab un Nabi; 1:518}

    2. Imam Bukhari in Sahih and Imam Ibn Majah in Sunan have narrated

    from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salma that Sayyiduna Amir ul Muminin

    Ali said: The best human after the Beloved Prophet ] is Abu Bakr and

    the best human after Abu Bakr is Umar! This Hadith is present in Sunan

    Ibn Majah. {Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab ul Fazail, Bab Fazl Umar; 1:11}

    3. Imam Abul Qasim Ismail bin Muhammad bin al Fazal at Talha narrates

    in Kitab us Sunnah that: Abu Bakr bin Marduya reported from Sulayman

    bin Muhammad through Hasan bin Mansur Ramani through Dawud bin

    Maaz through Abu Salma Utka Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman through

    Saeed bin Abu Aruba through Mansur bin Mutamar through Ibrahim

    through Alqama. Sayyiduna Alqama narrated that: News reached

    Sayyiduna Amir ul Muminin Ali that some people hold him more

    meritorious than Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar , hearing

    this Sayyiduna Ali mounted the pulpit and praised Allah Almighty, then

    said: O people! I came to know that some hold me more meritorious than

    Abu Bakr and Umar, if there had been any previous ruling on this matter,

    then I would have given my verdict and would have punished them. From

    today onwards who ever will be caught saying such will be regarded as a

    slanderer {Muftari} and will be awarded compulsorily the punishment for a

    slanderer, that is, eighty lashes! Then he said: Verily! Abu Bakr, then

    Umar are the most meritorious after the Beloved Prophet ] in this

    Ummah! Then Allah Almighty Knows who is meritorious after them.

    Sayyiduna Alqama narrates that Sayyiduna Imam Hasan Mujtaba

    was also present in this gathering and he said: By Allah! If he had named the third person, it would have been surely Usman !

    {Izalat ul Khafa an Khilafat ul Khulafa; 1:68}

    4. Imam Darqutni in Sunan and Imam Abu Umar bin Abdur Barr in

    Istiyab have narrated from Hakam bin Hajal that Sayyiduna Ali said:

    The one whom I find holding me more meritorious than Abu Bakr and

    Umar, I will punish him for slander! Imam Zahabi says that this Hadith is

    Sahih. {As Sawayiq ul Muharriqa; 91}

    5. It is narrated in Sunan Darqutni from Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfa , who

    was a companion {Sahabi} of the Prophet ] and was very close to

    Sayyiduna Amir ul Mumini Ali . Sayyiduna Ali used to address him

    as Wahb ul Khayr, Sayyiduna Abu Juhayfa narrates that: According to

    me Sayyiduna Ali was the most meritorious of all in the Ummah and I

    heard some people saying against this, I felt very sad. Sayyiduna Ali

    asked me the reason and I conveyed it to him, he took me to his house and

    said: O Abu Juhayfa! Shall I not tell you that who are the most meritorious

  • of all in the Ummah? It is Abu Bakr and then Umar! Sayyiduna Abu

    Juhayfa said: I took an oath of Allah Almighty that I will not hide this

    Hadith as long as I am alive for Sayyiduna Ali himself personally said it

    to me! {As Sawayiq ul Muharriqa; 92}

    6. Imam Ahmad in Musnad Zill Yadayn narrates from Ibn Abi Hazim

    that: One person went to Sayyiduna Zayn ul Abidin Ali bin Husayn

    and asked: What was the status of Abu Bakr and Umar before Rasul Allah

    ]? He replied: The same status as of today as they are buried with him!

    {Musnad Imam Ahmad; 4:77}

    7. Imam Darqutni narrates from Imam Baqar that he said: It is the

    consensus of the children and progeny of Sayyidah Fatimah Zahra that the

    most praiseworthy words should be said as regards to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr

    and Sayyiduna Umar! {As Sawayiq ul Muharriqa; 78}

    8. Imam Ibn Asakir narrates from Salim bin Abi Jaad that: I asked Imam

    Muhammad bin Hanafiya : Was Abu Bakr the first to accept Islam?

    He replied: No! Then I asked: Then what is the reason that Abu Bakr

    is highly regarded such that people do not talk of others except him ? He replied: It is because he was the most meritorious

    in Islam from the time he accepted it until he met his Lord Almighty! {As

    Sawayiq ul Muharriqa; 80}

    9. Imam Abul Hasan Darqutni narrates from Jundub Asdi that: Some

    people of Kufa and its surrounding areas came to Imam Muhammad

    bin Abdullah Mahaz bin Hasan Musanna bin Hasan Mujtaba bin

    Ali Murtaza Karam Allahu Wajhuhum and asked regarding Sayyiduna Abu Bakr

    and Sayyiduna Umar . The Imam turned towards me and said: Look

    at the inhabitants of your city! They are asking me regarding Sayyiduna

    Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar ! Verily, they both are more

    meritorious than Sayyiduna Ali according to me! {As Sawayiq ul Muharriqa;

    83}

    This Imam is the paternal grandson of Imam Hasan

    Mujtaba and the maternal grandson of Imam Husayn the Martyr

    of Karbala. His title is Nafs uz Zakiya and his father Imam Abdullah

    was the first to combine the two special lineages by being a Hasani

    Husayni, therefore was known as Mahaz , he was the leader

    of the Bani Hashim in his era. His father was Imam

    Hasan Musanna and mother was

    Sayyidah Fatimah Sughra % - the daughter of Imam Husayn ! May

    Allah Almighty be Pleased with all of them!

    10. Imam Hafiz Umar bin Shuba narrates from the Imam Sayyid Zayd

    the blessed Martyr that he said to the People of Kufa: The Khawarij

    {Kharijites} disparage / dishonour {Tabarra} those who were lesser in merits

    than Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar , that is, Sayyiduna

    Usman and Sayyiduna Ali . They never dared to say anything bad /

    unworthy of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar . But, you O

  • Kufans have even went beyond them and

    have not left even them in

    Disparagement {Tabarra}! Now who else remains ? By Allah!

    No one remains upon whom you have not done disparagement

    {Tabarra}! {As Sawayiq ul Muharriqa; 79}

    And We seek the protection of Allah Almighty, the Sustainer of the

    Universe. Allah Almighty is the Greatest!

    This blessed statement of Imam Zayd the Martyr is sufficient for us

    the servants of the family of Imam Zayd !

    The leader of the Sayyids of Bilgiram, Hazrat Marja ul Fariqayn, Majmu at

    Tariqayn, Habr ul Shariyah, Bahr ut Tariqah, Baqiyat us Salf, Hujjat ul

    Khalf, Sayyiduna wa Mawlana Mir Abdul Wahid Husayni Zaydi Wasiti

    Bilgirami authored a beneficial book named Saba Sanabil which

    attained the unique status of acceptance from the Beloved Rasul Allah ].

    The great grand father of the esteem questioner and the bless-full master

    of this poor author Hazrat Asad ul Wasilin, Mahbub ul Ashiqin, Sayyiduna

    wa Mawlana Sayyid Shah Hamza Husayni Zaydi Marhervi writes in the

    beginning of the book Kashif ul Astar that:

    It must be known that in our family Hazrat Sanad ul Muhaqqiqin Mir

    Sayyid Abdul Wahid Bilgirami is a man of unique accomplishments. He is

    the cardinal pole of guidance, the centre point of Sainthood {Wilayah}, a

    man with excellence in matters of the Apparent {Zahir} and the Hidden

    {Batin}, having experienced the real depth of research and knowledge, and

    an author of many books. The lineage of this Faqir

    reaches him in four generations. {Kashif ul Astar & Masar ul Kalam; 25}

    Then after few lines, he writes:

    In matters of Doctrine {Aqayid} and Spiritual paths {Suluk} his famous

    book is Sanabil. Haji ul Haramayn Sayyid Ghulam Ali Azad ,

    May Allah keep him in peace, writes in Masar ul Kalam that: In the

    Ramazan of 1135 A.H when the writer of these lines went to the Dar ul

    Khilafah Shahjahanabad to meet Shah Kaleemullah Chishti, the mention

    of Mir Abdul Wahid came during the conversation. The respected Shaykh

    related the immense merits of Mir Sahib and narrated that: One night

    when I was in Madinah Munawwarah lying on my bed, I dreamt that I

    and Sayyid Sibghatullah Baruji are present in a gathering of the Beloved

    Prophet ], a large group of Sahaba and other Awliya of the Ummah are

    also present. In this gathering is a man towards whom the Prophet ] is

    smiling and speaking with bless-full attention. When the gathering ended,

    I asked Sayyid Sibghatullah regarding the person to whom the Prophet ]

    was speaking with so much bless-full attention. He replied that it was Mir

    Abdul Wahid Bilgirami and the reason for his immense respect and bless-

    full attention was due to his book Sanabil which has been appreciated

    and liked by the Prophet ]! His words end here. This article ends with his

    blessed words. May Allah Almighty sanctify his sublime secrets! {Kashif ul

  • Hazrat Mir has written the matter of Tafzil in great detail with beautiful

    clarity in this blessed and accepted book . I shall also derive

    the blessed opportunity to quote from this book.

    While mentioning and explaining the consensus of the Awliya Allah,

    Muhaddithin, Fuqaha and the followers of the Truth, he writes:

    And upon this is the Consensus {Ijma} that the most meritorious after the

    Prophets 6 among the Humans is Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq , then

    Sayyiduna Umar Faruq , then Sayyiduna Usman Zull Nurayn and

    then Sayyiduna Ali Murtaza . May Allah be Pleased with all of them!

    {Saba Sanabil; 7}

    Then writes: The Merits of Khitnayn is lesser than Shaykhayn

    but that does not harm or flaw their status. {Saba Sanabil; 10}

    Then writes: The Consensus {Ijma} of the Sahaba, Tabayin, Taba Tabiyin

    and all the Scholars of this Ummah have been on this Doctrine {Aqidah}

    only! {Saba Sanabil; 10}

    Then writes: Makhdum Qazi Shahabuddin has written in Taysir ul

    Hakkam that no Saint {Wali} can reach the status of a Prophet because

    according to the Hadith after the Prophet 6, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq

    is the most meritorious of all the Saints Awliya and he did not reach

    the status of any Prophet ]. After Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq comes

    Amir ul Muminin Umar bin Khattab , then Amir ul

    Muminin Usman bin Affan , and then Amir ul Muminin Ali bin Abu

    Talib. May Allah be Pleased with all of them! The one who does not accept

    Amir ul Muminin Ali Murtaza as a Khalifa is from the Khawarij

    {Kharijites} and the one who regards him more meritorious

    than Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar is from the Rawafiz

    {Shiya / Shites}! {Saba Sanabil; 10}

    Then writes: From this we should know that no Spiritual Guide {Pir /

    Murshid} such as the Beloved Prophet ] and no Seeker {Murid} as

    Sayyiduna Abu Bakr has been born in the whole universe! O Friends!

    Though we should regard the merits of Shaykhayn more than the merits

    of the Khitnayn, but not in a way that arises the doubts of flaw and

    unworthiness in your heart! In fact their merits and that of other Sahaba

    are much high and beyond the reach of Human intellect and thought!

    {Saba Sanabil; 14-15}

    Then writes: When the Consensus of the Sahaba, the attributes of whom

    resemble that of the Prophets 6 has been reached on the meritorious-

    ness of the Shaykhayn and when this Consensus also includes Sayyiduna

    Ali who did not differ with them, then surely, the Tafziliya have

    heavily erred in their own Doctrine! May my house-hold be sacrificed on

    the name of Sayyiduna Ali and my life and heart be sacrificed on his

    feet! Who is the ever-unfortunate who does not have the love of

    Sayyiduna Ali Murtaza in his heart and who is the cursed one by Allah

    Almighty who accepts the disrespect of Sayyiduna Ali ? The Tafzilya

  • have regarded that to love Sayyiduna Ali necessitates regarding him

    more meritorious than the Shaykhayn, but they have utterly failed to

    understand that the love of Sayyiduna Ali necessitates one to agree with

    him and not differ with him in this matter! When Sayyiduna Ali

    himself have regarded the Shaykhayn and Sayyiduna Usman Zull Nurayn

    more meritorious than him, followed them and accepted their

    commandments in their reigns as Khalifas, then the love of Sayyiduna Ali

    demands that we agree with him and do not differ with him in this

    matter! {Saba Sanabil; 17}

    Hazrat Mir has written this matter in great detail spanning five pages, the

    one who desires them may refer to his book. This is the Doctrine {Aqidah}

    of the Ahl us Sunnah wal JamahAhl us Sunnah wal JamahAhl us Sunnah wal JamahAhl us Sunnah wal Jamah and the servants of the Imam Zayd

    the Martyr! And Allah Almighty Knows Best!
