U.S. and Canadian visitors do not need visasto enter Ireland or Britain but other nationalities should check visarequirements with their nearest Irish or British embassy or consulate.

It is a goodidea to carry a prescription for medication, glasses, contact lensesor dentures so it can be filled locally.

  • 8EUROS & POUNDS STERLINGThe Republic of Ireland uses the euro (a) while Britain andNorthern Ireland use the pound sterling (). The two currencies arenot interchangeable and U.S. or Canadian dollars are not acceptable.

In Ireland there are seven euro notes in denominations ofa5 to a500 and eight euro coins. Currently a1 = U.S. $1.35but this rate can fluctuate.

In Britain and Northern Ireland sterling pound notes are issuedin denominations of 5 to 100 with eight coins including 1and 2. Currently 1 = U.S. $1.60 but this rate can fluctuate.

$100 bills are not readily accepted for exchange, even in banks,so it is better to carry smaller denominations.

CHANGING MONEYIts a good idea to change some money to euro or pounds before youleave home so that you have local currency for the first couple of daysof your tour, especially if you arrive at weekends.

In Ireland banks and currency exchange offices at airports are opendaily for early morning arrivals, including weekends and publicholidays. In Britain there are usually no banks available but there arecurrency exchange offices that charge fees. Hotels and some storeswill change money but the rate will not be as favorable as at a bank.

Banking hours in Ireland: Mon Fri: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm or 5:00 pm.All are closed on weekends and some close for lunch.

Banking hours in Britain & Northern Ireland: 9:00 or 9:30 am to 3:30or 4:30 pm in cities and larger towns. A few open on Saturday morning.

CREDIT CARDS, ATMS & TRAVELERS CHECKSMajor credit cards are widely accepted and we recommend you usethem for large purchases to avoid carrying excess cash.

ATMs are widely available and will accept the appropriate U.S. cardand dispense cash in local currency but you must have a 4-digit pin.

Travelers checks and personal checks are not accepted.

Inform your bank that you are traveling overseas so that they do notblock your ATM or credit cards.

  • 9DRIVER/GUIDE TIPSGratuities to your tour director and driver are customarily made as anexpression of satisfactory service and are not included in your tour cost.Tour crews with many other companies supplement their incomes byselling optional excursions and dinner/shows on their tours; theseoptional extras can cost you an additional $280 per person per week.As CIE Tours includes almost all features and meals, our crews arenot distracted by selling optional tours but excel in their core taskand focus 100% on your enjoyment and well-being. Local city andwalking tour guides, work to make a short experience memorable andan expression of gratitude is always appreciated.

Our tipping guidelines below take the above factors into consideration.Tips should be presented on an individual basis in an envelope atthe end of your tour and local currency (euros or pounds) is preferable.

Our recommended minimum amounts, per person per day, are Driver/Guide (1 person crew) $8.00Tour Director (part of 2 person crew) $5.00Driver (part of 2 person crew) $5.00Guide for walking or city tour $2.00Driver of chauffeur vehicle $20.00

IMMIGRATION & CUSTOMSSee page 17 for airport arrival information.

CAR VOUCHERSCheck your car voucher to ensure that the category of car, pick-up anddrop-off dates and locations are correct. Treat vouchers like money asthey cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. Vouchers are non-transferableand we cannot issue a refund if unused.

LUGGAGE SPACEDont over pack! The car you rent will probably be smaller than theone you drive in the U.S. Consider soft-sided luggage, which is easierto stow and take the size of the trunk into consideration, especially ifthere are 3 or more persons traveling together. Hertz does not rentroof racks and is not responsible if your luggage does not fit into thecar you rent.

CAR RENTAL PICK-UPYou will be picking up your car at your arrival airport and you may betired after a transatlantic flight. While you will be eager to get into thevehicle and get away from the airport, it is important for you to clarify allaspects of the car rental before you sign the contract. At the start of thecar rental be sure you understand what insurance you have purchasedand any extras that you may have to pay for.

Inspect the car thoroughly for scratches, dents, missing hubcaps orother damage before you accept the vehicle. We strongly suggest thatyou do not plan a long itinerary for the first day if you are jet-lagged asyou will have to negotiate traffic on the other side of the road.

CREDIT CARD HOLDHertz requires a credit card imprint when you pick up your car. If youdo not purchase Super CDW insurance, they will pre-authorize anamount of a2,400. This will be released on return provided thereis no damage to the vehicle. If you purchase Super CDW insurance, the amount will be approximately a200 but depends on the typeof car you rent.

TRAFFIC LAWSIn Ireland you must drive on the left-hand side of the road and overtakeon the right. Driver and all passengers are legally obliged to wear safetybelts. When a traffic signal is red all traffic must stop and no turnsmay be made. Speed limits are clearly indicated by road signs and werecommend that you keep well within them. Roundabouts (traffic circles)are used extensively to keep traffic flowing. The driver entering theroundabout must yield to the right to the vehicle already on it. Someroundabouts are large with traffic lights to control traffic flow and someare tiny, just 3-4 feet across.

DISTANCES & SPEED LIMITSKilometers are used in the Republic of Ireland. 1 mile = 1.6 kilometers. In Northern Ireland distances and speeds are expressed in miles.

    Motorway 120 km (70 mph)Country roads 100 km (60 mph)Built-up areas 50 km (30 mph)

GASOLINE PRICESAll rental cars are provided with a full tank of fuel and should berefueled prior to return, otherwise refueling charges will apply. The costof gasoline is the hirers responsibility and is not included in the carrental price. Current gasoline costs are approximately a1.55 per liter(approx. $8.00 per US gallon). Diesel is slightly cheaper and moreeconomical. It is important to use correct fuel in the vehicle.

TOLLSMajor roads and tunnels charge toll fees and must be paid in cash onsite. The M50 route between junctions 6 and 7 operates a no-barriertolling system where Hertz pays for the toll and then charges it back toyour credit card. Most toll charges are approx. a2 3 but the DublinPort Tunnel is a10 at peak times. For exact amounts visit the NationalRoads Authority at www.nra.ie

PARKING FEESCharges for parking are not included. Fees generally apply in cities andtowns but may apply to hotels or attractions.

CAR RENTAL RETURNHertz calculates rates in 24-hour periods and late returns will becharged to your credit card at the regular daily local rate. There is atwo-hour grace period, so note the actual pick-up time on your carrental agreement, since that may affect charges at drop off time.

CHANGES IN RESERVATIONSAny change to land arrangements made after the original booking hasbeen processed will incur a $50 handling fee per booking. No changescan be accepted within 14 days of departure or after documents havebeen issued.
