142010 Eastern Michigan University Football Weekly Release

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team saw a fourth-quar-ter comeback topped by Army in a heartbreaking 31-27 loss in a non-conference game here Saturday night, Sept. 4, in Rynearson Stadium in the 2010 season opener for both teams. The Eagles rallied to take a 27-24 lead with just 2:59 left in the game on a 10-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs,

Ohio-Clyde) to senior tight end Ben Thayer (Kalama-

zoo, Mich.-Hackett Catholic Central) followed by the extra point kick by newcomer Sean Graham (Com-

merce Township-Orchard Lake St. Mary's).

Army would spoil the Eagles' chance at the win, how-ever, scoring on a seven-yard touchdown run by Jared Hassin and the PAT by Alex Carlton with just 38 sec-onds left in the game for a 31-27 Army lead. EMU would manage to march all the way to the Army 32-yard line, but the last play of the game was an incomplete pass, giving the Black Knights the victory. Both teams were reliant on the time being kept on the fi eld after a blown transformer shut down the scoreboard from midway through the second quarter through the entire second half. A portable scoreboard was placed near the northeast end zone for the fourth quarter. The Eagles' had two players go over the100-yard rushing mark with Priest turning in a career-best 142 yards on 26 rushes and Gillett gaining 126 yards on 18 carries. For Priest it was his third 100-yard game, with two of them coming against Army in the series. Gillett has now rushed for 100 yards three times. Army was led by Patrick Mealy who rushed for 81 yards on 14 carries. Malcolm Brown, Jared Hassin and Brian Cobbs each rushed for 68, 68 and 60 yards, re-spectively, as the Black Knights tallied 309 yards on 55 carries as a team. Eastern turned in an impressive scoring drive on the opening series, rolling 66 yards on 11 plays, culminat-ing in a fi ve-yard touchdown run by Priest. The PAT kick by Graham gave the Eagles the early 7-0 lead at the 9:07 mark of the fi rst quarter. Priest carried six times for 37 yards during the drive. The EMU defense then forced Army to punt on its fi rst off ensive possession, but the visitors turned in the game's fi rst turnover on the Eagles' second off ensive drive, forcing a Priest fumble at the home 15-yard line. The Black Knights capitalized quickly on that turn-over, with Jared Hassin scoring on a three-yard run on the fourth play of the drive. Alex Carlton added the PAT kick to tie the game at 7-7 with 2:47 left in the fi rst quarter. The second quarter was briefl y interrupted by a 10-minute power outage in the bank of lights on the west-side of the stadium. The play clocks were still functional and the game offi cials called for a resump-tion of play with the available lights working in the rest of the stadium. With the west-side lights slowly returning to full power, Army attempted a 41-yard fi eld goal that was short and to the right. While the scoreboard stayed dark due to that blown transformer, the Black Knights went 55 yards in plays, to gain a 14-7 lead with just 40 seconds left in the sec-ond quarter on a three-yard run by Hassin and a PAT boot by Carlton.

Army was penalized for a personal foul at the end of the touchdown run and the Black Knights were forced to kick from their own 15-yard line. The Eagles made the visitors pay for that indiscretion, with Corey Welch (Akron, Ohio-Green) bobbling the kickoff before picking it up and racing 26 yards all the way to the Army 39-yard line. Four plays later, Priest rumbled fi ve yards for his sec-ond touchdown of the game with just 15 seconds re-maining in the half. Graham added his second PAT to knot the game at 14-all. The half ended with that score intact. Army took the second-half kickoff 75 yards in nine plays with Patrick Mealy running 11 yards for a touch-down at the 10:33 mark of the third quarter. Carlton added the PAT kick for a 21-14 Army lead. The Black Knights then forced a fumble on the en-suing kickoff , recovering on the EMU 32-yard line. The EMU defense stiff ened at that point and held Army to three points on a 42-yard fi eld goal by Carlton with 8:28 left in the third quarter for a 24-14 lead. Eastern bounced right back with a score of its own, cutting the lead to 24-20, with 2:29 left in the third on a one-yard run by Gillett. The Eagles could not get the PAT snap and hold attempt completed and an at-tempted drop-kick on the play by Jay Karutz (North Ryde, Australia-Holy Cross) was short. The Eagles went on top, 26-24, with 2:59 left in the game when Gillett found Thayer in the left corner of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown pass. The PAT attempt this time split the uprights for the two-point lead. Army answered back in short time with an eight-play, 72-yard drive that was capped with a seven-yard rushing touchdown by Hassin with just 38 seconds remaining to add the fi nal tally in thrilling come-from-behind fashion. The Eagles made a last ditch attempt in the fi nal seconds with the ball at Army's 32-yard line, but Gillett's pass soared over the out-stretched hands of Thayer and into the back of the end zone as time expired.

Army Escapes with a 31-27 Victory Over EasternPriest and Gillett each rush for more than 100 yards in the loss

15 2010 Eastern Michigan University Football Weekly Release

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michi-gan University football team came up just short on its 2010 Mid-American Conference opener to Miami University, 28-21, Saturday afternoon, Sept. 11, here at Yager Stadium. The Eagles had a pair of fourth-quarter drives into Red-Hawk territory but were turned away each time. With the ball at midfi eld, sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett

(Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) was sacked on third down as the clock rolled under three minutes. On 4th-and-9, senior tight end Josh LeDuc (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) caught a Gillett off ering that was just long enough for the fi rst down at the MU 42. Two plays later, Trey Hunter

(Pemberville, Ohio-Eastwood) looked to have caught a touchdown pass, but he was unable to get his foot down in the front corner of the end zone. Then on 4th-and-11 at the 22-yard line with just 41 seconds showing on the clock, Gillett’s pass intended for LeDuc was knocked away, giving the ball back to Miami. MU was able to run out the clock and preserve the 28-21 victory. With the setback, Eastern Michigan drops to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the MAC. Meanwhile, Miami evens its record at 1-1 and goes to 1-0 in league action. Gillett led the Eagles off ensively, going 18-for-30 for 171 yards via the air with two scores. Sophomore Kinsman

Thomas (Bennettsville, S.C.-Marlboro County) caught four balls for 133 yards and two touchdowns, while LeDuc grabbed seven passes for 45 yards and a score plus throw-ing for a touchdown as well. Junior Corey Welch (Akron,

Ohio-Green) picked up 18 yards on seven carries via the ground. Newcomer Jay Karutz (North Ryde, New South Wales,

Australia-Holy Cross College) had a career day punting the football, racking up four punts for 198 yards for a 49.5 yard average. Two of the punts were downed inside the one-yard line, that 49.5 yard average is a school record, shattering the previous single-game mark of 49.0 set by Jerry Wedge versus Eastern Illinois University, Oct. 27, 1956. For Miami, Thomas Merriweather carried the ball 15 times for 105 yards and three touchdowns while Tracy Woods added nine carries for 41 yards. Quarterback Zac Dysert ran the ball nine times for 43 yards while going 16-for-25 via the air with one score. The RedHawks drew fi rst blood, marching 60 yards on just six plays to open the contest. With the ball resting at the EMU 24 yard-line, Thomas Merriweather took the han-doff and scampered to paydirt for the score with 12:06 still to play in the fi rst quarter. The Trevor Cook PAT was good to make the score 7-0 in favor of Miami. The ensuing EMU drive stalled near midfi eld, but Karutz was able to turn it into a positive. The newcomer was able to pin Miami back at its own one-yard line with a 56-yard booming punt. Miami would again move the ball past midfi eld, but on the 11th play of the drive Dysert would fl oat a pass that was intercepted by Colin Weingrad (Woodlands, Texas-

College Park) and returned seven-yards to the EMU 29-yard line. After an EMU rush for no gain, Gillett would lateral the football to LeDuc. LeDuc heaved the ball down fi eld to a wide-open Thomas for the 71-yard touchdown strike. Sean Graham (Orchard Lake, Mich.-Orchard Lake St.

Marys-Florida State) followed with a PAT to knot the score at 7-7 with 2:34 left in the opening period. The touchdown pass also marked the fi rst career pass at-tempt for the senior, while Thomas has now caught a pair touchdowns in his career that have gone for more than 70-yards. After a dry start to the ballgame, the sky fi lled with rain late in the opening stanza, making holding onto the football much more of a challenge. The rain subsided and

eventually stopped at the game’s halfway point. Dysert would direct the RedHawks 85 yards in just eight plays, hooking up with Armand Robinson on the swing-pass for a 24-yard completion and the score. The PAT was true to give MU the 14-7 edge with 11:05 showing in the second quarter. Eastern Michigan would tie the contest at 14, when Gil-lett rocked a pass into the chest of LeDuc for the 11-yard touchdown with 28 seconds remaining before the inter-mission. The score capped a 13-play, 71-yard drive that took 4:59 off the clock. Following the intermission, the sides would exchange punts with neither side able to get its off ense in gear. It was not until Gillett again found a streaking Thomas for a 40-yard touchdown toss with 6:43 left in the third period that either team had advanced past midfi eld in the second half. The scoring drive consumed 55 plays, with Graham tacking on the extra point to make it 21-14. A great return on the ensuing kickoff gave the Red-Hawks starting position in Eagle territory. Three plays later, Merriweather repeated what he had done on the game’s opening score, sweeping left and heading to the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown carry to again deadlock the score at 21-21 with 4:00 to go in the third. The defense stiff ened for both sides, however, it was the RedHawk off ense going back to the air to start the fourth quarter that keyed the critical scoring drive. Dysert completed three passes, but it was Miami returning to the ground inside the red zone. Despite being spun around at the goal line, Merriweath-er found the end zone from nine yards out for the third time on the day with 9:03 remaining. The run capped a 70-yard drive. The PAT was good to make it 28-21 in favor of the RedHawks. Eastern was driving for what looked to be the tieing score when Gillett lofted a pass towards the sideline as the pocket collapsed that was picked off by a Miami defender at the six-yard line with 6:40 to play. Prior to the intercep-tion, the Eagles had marched 27 yards down to the Red-Hawk 33. MU would be unable to capitalize though, going three-and-out with a punt. That set up the fi nal EMU series that ended with an in-complete pass in the end zone with Miami running out the clock to end the game.

162010 Eastern Michigan University Football Weekly Release

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team fell behind early and could not make up the diff erence in a 52-14 loss to a visit-ing Central Michigan University team here in a Mid-American Conference West Divi-sion game Saturday, Sept. 18, in Rynearson Stadium. EMU, now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in MAC ac-tion, was led by senior tailback Dwayne

Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork

Union Military Academy) who carried the ball 16 times for 49 yards with one touch-down run. The quarterbacking duties were shared by Alex Gillett (Green Springs,

Ohio-Clyde), who led the Eagles with 148 yards through the air on 12-of-20 passing, and Devontae Payne (Cleveland, Ohio-

South), who completed 13-of-24 passes for 134 yards. CMU, now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in MAC play, was led by junior tailback Paris Cotton who gained 209 yards on 21 carries while scor-ing three touchdowns. CMU quarterback Ryan Radcliff completed 15-of-23 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Both teams played tough defense in the early stages with Central Michigan manag-ing to get on the board fi rst on a 21-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Radcliff to wide receiver Cody Wilson with David Har-man adding the PAT kick at the 4:03 mark of the fi rst quarter. The Chippewas came right back to take a 14-0 lead just under three minutes later when Paris Cotton ran 13 yards for a score with Harman once again adding the PAT with 47 seconds remaining in the fi rst quarter. Eastern cut that advantage to seven, 14-7, on a two-yard run by Priest and the PAT by sophomore transfer Sean Graham

(Commerce Township, Mich.-Orchard

Lake St. Mary’s) at the 4:28 mark of the second quarter. Central would fi nish the fi rst-half scoring on a one-yard run by Cotton and the PAT by Harman to head into the lockerroom with a 21-7 lead. The visitors would make it 28-7 in the early stages of the third quarter on a 61-yard touchdown burst by Cotton. The Eagles fought right back to make it

28-14 with 8:09 left in the third on a short pass from Gilette to a speeding Donald

Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) down the left sideline for a 52-yard touchdown. The Chippewas would match that EMU score on a 14-yard touchdown strike from Radcliff to Kito Poblah for a 35-14 lead with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter. The CMU defense would then come up with a score of its own, sending a blitz on Gillett that resulted in a 43-yard fumble re-covery for a touchdown by Mike Petrucci for a 42-14 Chippewa advantage. CMU would tag on a 41-yard fi eld goal by Harman with 8:09 left in the contest for a 45-14 CMU lead. The Chips came right back with a 20-yard touchdown run by Zurion Tipton with 6:25 remaining to make it 52-14. The going does not get any easier for the Eagles as they go out of the conference next Saturday, Sept. 25, to play at No. 2 ranked Ohio State in a 3:30 p.m. game set to be shown nationally on ABC.

17 2010 Eastern Michigan University Football Weekly Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team saw its season record dip to 0-4 with a 73-20 loss to the No. 2 ranked Ohio State University Buckeyes here Saturday, Sept. 25, afternoon in Ohio Stadium. The Eagles fell behind early, trail-ing 24-0 after the fi rst quarter and could never catch up in the non-conference loss. The loss drops EMU to 0-4 while the Buckeyes improve to 4-0 on the season. For the Eagles sophomore quarterback Alex

Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) led the way, completing 13-of-22 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union Academy) led the Eagles’ rushing attack with 24 yards on nine rushes while Gillett gained 23 on 14 carries. Three EMU receivers turned in outstand-ing eff orts as sophomore wide receiver Kins-

man Thomas (Bennettsville, S.C.-Marlboro

County) caught three passes for 65 yards and one touchdown, senior tight end Ben Thayer

(Kalamazoo, Mich.-Hackett Catholic Central) followed with fi ve receptions for 75 yards and freshman wide receiver Donald Scott (Apo-

pka, Fla.-Apopka) had three grabs for 56 yards and one touchdown reception. Ohio State was led by quarterback Terrelle Pryor who completed 20-of-26 passes for 224 yards and fourth touchdowns while also catch-ing one pass for a score. He ran seven times for 104 yards and one score. Ohio State struck early in the game, with Pryor racing 53-yards for a touchdown on the Buck-eyes fi rst off ensive possession of the game. Place-kicker Devin Barclay added the PAT kick for a 7-0 lead at the 13:04 mark of the fi rst quar-ter. The home team would increase that lead to 14-0 on their very next possession when Pryor found Dane Sanzanbacher for a 31-yard touch-down pass with Barclay adding the PAT with 10:55 remaining in the opening quarter. Ohio State would get the ball right back on a fumble recovery, but the EMU defense came up with a stout defensive eff ort to limit the Buck-eyes to a 42-yard Barclay fi eld goal with 6:41 left in the fi rst for a 24-0 lead. The Eagles would come back at that point to turn in an impressive 75-yard, nine-play drive to break the shutout on a two-yard touchdown run by Priest with newcomer Sean Graham

(Commerce Township-Orchard Lake St.

Mary’s) adding the PAT kick to make it 24-7 with remaining in the second quarter. Thayer had two big catches during that drive, one for 14 yards and another for 20. Ohio State would go to a hurry-up off ense on

their next possession to roll 68 yards on eight plays ending with a nine-yard pass from Pryor to Sanzenbacher for a 31-7 lead with 7:44 left in the fi rst half. The next Buckeye possession was also suc-cessful as Pryor hooked up with Sanzenbacher for a six-yard touchdown strike for a 28-7 Buck-eye lead with 4:18 left in the half. The EMU off ense would once again rally for a big score, driving 73 yards on seven plays, cul-minating with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Gillett to Thomas with 59 seconds left in the half to cut the defi cit to 38-14. Thomas had the key play in the drive with a 46-yard reception. The Buckeyes started the second half with a 57-yard drive for a score with Pryor fi nding his favorite receiver, Sanzenbacher, for an eight-yard touchdown pass at the 12:34 mark of the third quarter. The Eagles would not be out-done, however, marching 80 yards on six plays with Gillett fi nd-ing Scott for a 32-yard touchdown pass to fi nish the drive with 9:11 left in the third quarter. The PAT kick was blocked, leaving the score, 45-20. Ohio State then relied on a trick play to score the next touchdown. Pryor pitched to Jordan Hall who then threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Pryor in the left-corner of the end zone for a 52-20 advantage at the 2:57 mark of the third quarter. The Buckeyes would increase their lead to 59-20 on a 17-yard pass from substitute quarter-back Joe Bauserman to Jordan Hall and would add to that advantage with a 67-yard run by Jamaal Berry with 8:39 left and a 15-yard run by Kenny Guiton with 3:26 left to make the fi nal, 73-20.

182010 Eastern Michigan University Football Weekly Release

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The East-ern Michigan University football team turned in a great fi rst-half eff ort only to be out-scored 20-7 in the second half for a 30-17 loss to the Ohio University Bobcats here Saturday after-noon, Oct. 2, at Rynearson Stadium in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game. The loss spoiled EMU’s Homecoming. After fi ghting to a 10-10 halftime tie, the Ea-gles were not able to contain the Bobcats in the second half as Ohio scored three unanswered touchdowns. With the loss the Eagles fall to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in MAC action while Ohio im-proves to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play. For the Eagles sophomore quarterback Alex

Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) led the way, completing 15-of-30 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown pass. Dwayne Priest (Ro-

anoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union Academy) led the Eagles’ rushing attack with 117 yards on 19 rushes, his fourth career 100-yard rushing eff ort. Ohio was paced by quarterback Boo Jackson who completed 15-of-24 passes for 218 yards and one touchdown. Jackson also led the Bob-cats on the ground, gaining 60 yards on 13 rushes. Three EMU receivers turned in outstanding ef-forts as well, as sophomore wide receiver Kins-

man Thomas (Bennettsville, S.C.-Marlboro

County) caught fi ve passes for 57 yards with one touchdown, senior tight end Josh LeDuc

(Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) followed with three receptions for 41 yards and sophomore tight end Garrett Hoskins (Grand Rapids,

Mich.-Creston) had two grabs for 34 yards. Defensively, the Eagles were led by senior linebacker Tim Fort (Southfi eld, Mich.-South-

fi eld) with 14 tackles on the game. Ohio struck fi rst in the game, driving 41 yards on the fi rst off ensive drive of the day, capping it off with a 42-yard fi eld goal by Matt Weller at the 7:34 mark of the fi rst quarter. The Eagles rallied to go on top 7-3 when Kins-man Thomas caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Gillett at the 2:47 mark of the fi rst quarter. Newcomer Sean Graham (Commerce

Township-Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) added the PAT. That drive went 65 yards on eight plays. The drive was set up by a 32-yard run by senior tight end Ben Thayer (Kalamazoo, Mich.-

Hackett Catholic Central) on a fake punt at-tempt. Ohio would then fi ght back to take a 10-7 lead with 10:17 left in the second quarter with tailback Vince Davidson scoring on a two-yard burst through the middle followed by a Weller-PAT kick.

Graham made the fi rst fi eld goal attempt of his career pay off with a 25-yard boot with just 37 seconds left in the fi rst half to tie the game at 10-all. The Bobcats were fi rst on the board in the second half, moving 67 yards on seven plays, culminating in a seven-yard touchdown run by Vince Davidson at the 9:34 mark of the third. Weller added the PAT boot for a 17-10 Ohio lead. The visitors than struck quickly, when Jackson connected with Davidson on a 61-yard touch-down pass with Weller adding the PAT for a 24-10 Bobcat lead with 7:44 remaining. Ohio increased its lead to 30-10 with 24 sec-onds remaining when Riley Dunlap scored on an 18-yard run. The PAT kick was no good. The Eagles broke Ohio’s streak of 20-straight points by rolling 91 yards on nine plays with Priest knifi ng in from the one-yard line for a touchdown with 12:30 left in the game. Gra-ham added the PAT to cut Ohio’s lead to 30-17. EMU marched right back down the fi eld to reach Ohio’s 25-yard line, but a four-and-fi ve play resulted in a quarterback sack, giving the Bobcats possession with 10:21 left in the game. The Eagles had yet another chance to enter the red zone when sophomore defensive back Marcell Rose (Orlando, Fla.-Cypress Creek) intercepted a pass and the Eagles advanced to Ohio’s 44-yard line, but another fourth down run was short, giving the ball back to the Bob-cats with just over six minutes remaining. EMU will now head to Nashville, Tenn. for a non-league battle with Vanderbilt University, Saturday, Oct. 9.
