Guthrie Govan
JTC SAYS:
20 ODD TIME LICKS: Vol.1 5/4 Lick 18
Again, we start with a tricky stretch, a legato E minor triad. The static A minor backing gives a great opportunity to experiment with other scales, and a really cool thing to try is “pentatonic substitution”. Basically, our home scale is A Dorian (A B C D E F# G). That scale contains the notes of A minor pentatonic (A C D E G). But it also contains two other minor pentatonic scales... E minor pentatonic (E G A B D) and B minor pentatonic (B D E F# A). That means you can use all three of those pentatonic scales, and you’ll still be within the A Dorian tonality. You just create a different “sound world” because of the notes you’re NOT playing.
Guthrie used B minor pentatonic (or blues scale) at the start of Lick 15, and he’s using E minor pentatonic at the start of this lick.
