Mental Health Awareness: “Triggered!” Sarah Gould – 11 Mental health is an oft forgotten aspect of self-care, so it is usually neglected by the media and the masses alike. It seems that the only exception to this rule is when mental health terms are used as a punch-line to a joke. Hearing “triggered” in the school hallways is commonplace. In some circumstances it is even expected. The phrase is not used out of contempt, but rather as a satire of its use by those who are perceived as being “too sensitive.” While it is certainly important to be able to distinguish between a harmless joke and truly offensive acts, the fact that mental health goes undiscussed indicates that that many people do not have an understanding of what a trigger is. Taking the term literally, trigger, according to Merriam-Webster, means “something that causes something else to happen.” This is a very vague and broad definition, but when speaking of it from a mental health perspective, the word has a much heavier meaning. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), “PTSD is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.” Most people associate PTSD with soldiers having flashbacks to disturbing scenes they have witnessed. While it is absolutely true that many veterans suffer from the disorder, the general population is also at risk of developing PTSD. Any form of trauma, ranging from a serious injury to witnessing a death, has the potential to foster the disorder. In these cases, a trigger is anything that causes the person to relive their traumatic experience. Triggers are not just limited to those with PTSD. They could be used in reference to the instigating of an episode of any mental illness. For example, a person with anxiety may have a panic attack when they are around people who intimidate them, or a depressed person could turn to self-harm when reminded of a stressful event. With all of this in mind, the fact that “being triggered” has become a joke takes away from its use as a mental health necessity. Poking fun at these resources are not the way to spread their value. If anything, they diminish it. When talking about a frustrating event, it is best to avoid referencing the word in such a negative fashion and to kindly inform others about the tremendous importance of that single word “Being triggered” does not happen when a teacher announces a pop quiz or when a friend brings up an embarrassing memory. Triggers are an invaluable aspect of mental health. The term needs to be respected for value to identify the difficulties surrounding life with mental illness. Mental Health Awareness: “Triggered!”Sarah Gould – 11

Mental health is an oft forgotten aspect of self-care, so it is usually neglected by the media and the masses alike. It seems that the only exception to this rule is when mental health terms are used as a punch-line to a joke. Hearing “triggered” in the school hallways is commonplace. Herbal tea offers benefits Quinn Holl - 9

The benefits of consuming herbal tea range from preventing illnesses all the way to calming nerves into a state of peace. Herbal tea is an infusion of leaves, seeds, roots or bark. It is then extracted into hot water in order to diffuse the natural flavor of the tea throughout the beverage. Most may not think that herbal tea could provide such an astounding number of benefits to someone’s health, however the valuable benefits of drinking herbal tea are quite fascinating at the least. There are 86 diverse selections of herbal tea to choose from, and with so many options it is very likely that someone will find a tea that is most beneficial to themselves and their health. Herbal tea does not necessarily have to be imbibed upon if a person has fallen ill. It can simply just be a pleasurable drink that obtains helpful factors in order to boost someone’s overall health. The following herbal teas are most commonly known not just for their asset, but for their taste as well. One of the most common herbal teas, and one of my personal favorites is peppermint tea. Peppermint tea is obviously made from peppermint and is usually perceived for medicinal uses. It frequently helps to improve digestion, reduce pain, eliminate inflammation, cure bad breath, assists with weight loss and overall boosts the immune system. Ginger tea, which is made from ginger root, also improves digestion along with preventing nausea, vomiting and reduces bloating. Another tea that is great for digestion is Chamomile tea. Chamomile tea is made of flowers and is helpful for cough, bronchitis, cold or fever. Not only that, but chamomile tea also helps to seduce sleep upon individuals who are said to be sleep deprived and also contains many more medicinal benefits to someone’s health. Another herbal tea that helps to improve the overall health of an individual is rooibos tea, which is made from a bush plant found in South Africa. Rooibos tea is used as a cure for headaches, insomnia, asthma, hypertension, allergies and premature aging. Lemon balm tea nourishes bronchial inflammation, earache, fever, headaches, high blood pressure, mood disorders and toothache. Milk thistle and dandelion tea is known to “cleanse” the liver and protects liver cells while ridding our body of poisons. Rosehip tea is the fruit of the rose plant and improves skin and tissue health along with relieving symptoms of kidney disorders or constipation. Finally, blue tea, which is made from dried butterfly pea flowers and lemongrass has many benefits as well. Surprisingly enough, blue tea obtains the ability to increase the metabolism and surpasses that of other tea varieties, it also allows humans to burn fat more naturally. Not only that, but blue tea also prevents various types of cancer and increases the body’s natural defenses against diseases. Despite the herbal teas that have been named, there are four known teas that are not considered to be herbal teas. Those teas include green tea, black tea, white tea and oolong tea. The difference between herbal and non-herbal tea is much simpler than most would come to think. Herbal tea is prepared from steeping the leaves, stems, flowers, roots, bark or rhizomes of any particular herb. However, non-herbal teas are specifically brewed from leaves. Even though non herbal teas are not concocted from naturally sprouted herbs, they still contain benefits that will shock most who are unaware of their health factors. For example, black tea includes benefits such as aiding tooth decay, low- concentrations levels, digestive problems, poor blood circulation, high blood pressure and asthma. Lastly, Green tea is great for weight loss and helps to decrease an individual’s chances of receiving heart disease, diabetes, tooth decay and esophageal cancer. Overall tea provides benefits that can lead to unbelievable results for the future, and each tea has its own distinct supple flavor that deciphers it from others. It is simple to say that imbibing upon a cup of tea once a day will not harm the health, at the least it will only improve it. The most difficult task now is to find a tea that will suit the seeker best, whether they are selecting by the taste or by the beneficial factors that sift throughout each sip of the delectable hot tea as it pours over their tongue with a sense of satisfaction. Most teens of the 21st century are most likely not regular consumers of hot tea, however it is never too late to start hunting down for a flavor and a state of mind that has yet to be experienced before. I for one have always been introduced to hot tea and can say from personal experience that even adding a bit of honey can increase the flavor and add the sweetness that is desired. Herbal tea is even said to be healthier than water, and it provides extra benefits and comfort as well. That is just one of many reasons as to why drinking herbal tea should become an ideal part of someone’s diet. Movie Review - Me Before YouKylee Landis - 10

Over the summer I watched a movie that is not just a romance movie, but it will impact opinions on others. A young girl named Louisa, nicknamed as “Lou” moves from job to job to help her family. The actor Emilia plays the character Lou, and her happy attitude helps her get a job as a caregiver for a very wealthy young paralyzed man and his name is Will Traynor. Louisa and Will’s relationship starts out bad because of Will’s attitude over being disabled and of having to deal with a caregiver. Things get a lot worse after Will’s ex, Alicia, and his best friend Rupert went to visit him and told him that they are going to get married. For Louisa it is awkward at the time. But, Will slowly become a lot more talkative and very outgoing as they get closer and start doing activities together. After his attempt Camilla his mother promised to listen to her son’s wish. Camilla agreed but only if Will would agree to live for another six months. Louisa tries to prove Will that his life is worth living. Will and Louisa are the two main actors and actresses. They both are very good at what they do. I did not once see any bad scene that grabbed my attention. In the movie there were many scenes I enjoyed. There was not one part in this movie I disliked. I enjoyed how in the be-ginning of the movie Will was all stubborn and came out as a loving man, he was hard to get. I also liked how Louisa wanted to prove Will that his life’s worth living and how she took him to many different places. This movie has impacted me a lot no one should judge others just by the way they look. I learned that just because peo-ple can be mean and stubborn does not always mean give up on them and not try. I learned to push myself and to give it my all instead of running away from people who give you nothing but rude-ness. I was told to kill them with kindness. I suggest anyone who loves romance movie should go watch this. The movie will have an impact on many people. The rat-ing of this movie is PG-13. This movie is such a good movie I rate it a 5 out of 5.

Pumpkin perksSierra Fisher – 11

It is that time of year again where everyone is setting out pumpkins for fall decora-tion. When doing this, many adults and students carve their pumpkins and throw away the “guts” of the pumpkin instead of using them to their advantage. Katelynn Sepke says “After carving pumpkins, I never keep anything”. Few realize that both the inside and outside of the pumpkin can be used in many ways including desserts, coffee and even face masks. Pumpkins are very healthful, being that they are rich in Vitamin A and Potassium. Along with the nutritional gain from eating pumpkin, there are also many health benefits. It is noted that it can boost vision, lower blood pressure and help aid a better night’s sleep. Overall, it is widely unknown or ignored as to how much of a nutritional gain pumpkins have. There are many ways to incorporate pumpkin into healthful (or not so healthful) treats this season. Athlete spotlight shines on Hamburg seniorShawna Hauck -9

Andrea Fink is a senior at Hamburg Area High School. Not only does she play soccer, but she also manages the high school girl’s basketball team. She has been playing soccer for 13 years. She currently plays soccer for the school and for a travel team called Penn Legacy. She has been titled team captain for three years. She plays the center back position, which is defense. Even while on defense she had multiple scoring opportunities.

“Andrea is a huge help both on and off the field.” says Tia Strunk, a teammate. Teammates described her as positive and hardworking.

Next year Andrea plans to attend Malone University in Canton, Ohio. She received a division two scholarship this year to play soccer at Malone. Next year she will be studying to be a physical therapist. “I want to help athletes get back onto the field, because I know how tough the process is,” says Andrea. When giving advice to underclassmen she encourages everyone to work hard and never let anyone put you down. Andrea is excited, but also nervous for the future ahead.

November recognizes National Healthy Skin MonthSydney Buchfeller - 10

The upcoming winter months can be harsh on everyone. The cold nights with the chilling breeze can be hard to handle. Not only do we feel a chill down our spine the moment we step outside, but we also face the dangers of damaging our skin. Skin can seem like one of the toughest parts of the body. But when faced with cold, it can take a real beating. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) designated November as healthy skin month to help raise awareness about the importance of keeping skin hydrated and healthy. There are quick and easy step that the AAD recommends to prevent skin damage and pro-tect one of the most important organs of the body. Students at Hamburg High have been taking high precautions in protecting their skin by moisturizing throughout the day. Lotions are located throughout the school in classrooms and in the library. Most people think that sunscreen is only important during the summer. However, sun-screen is important all year round. Snow is the one thing that people look forward to for the winter months. But before stepping outside to have a snowball fight, apply a moisturizer with SPF to the areas of the body still exposed beneath the layers. The bright white snow will reflect the sun’s rays and can be both blinding and cause sunburn. Another great way to maintain healthy skin is to also maintain a healthy diet. Whatever we put into our body will reflect externally on our skin. The more nutrients we put into our bodies, the better our skin will appear. National Healthy Skin Month is a great eye opener for people to protect their skin and keep it youthful. Daily skincare tips are a great start to healthy skin, but it is always a great idea to stay alert of informed on everyone’s specific body. If any concerns arise, see a skincare specialist for other specific help. Make sure to keep skin moisturized daily and never forget the lips. Celebrate a new season, with great skin! For more information, visit: www.augustahealth.com

Notice Adopt A Senior Pet MonthTabitha Engel - 9

The month of November is adopt a senior pet month. During this month animal shelters encourage people looking to adopt to adopt older animals. This is because unfortunately older animals are often looked over by potential adopters. Since senior pets are not adopted as much they are often at higher risk to be euthanized. This month is to increase of awareness of the older pets in the shelter because they deserve a home too.

Some perks to having a senior dog is that the owner does not have to go through the trouble of training them like they would have to with a puppy. It has also been proven that older animals are easier to train than younger ones. They are much calmer than younger animals, so if the owner likes their home to be peaceful, then a senior animal is probably a good match. Senior pets’ personalities are also fully developed so when the owner knows what they are getting when they adopt them.

So if you are c o n s i d e r i n g adopting a dog, cat, or any other animal anytime soon, please consider a senior one. They deserve a home just as much as puppies and kittens do.

HAWK HAPPENINGS November 17, 2016 PAGE 3 Black Friday history is uncoveredMeredith Haas - 9

Black Friday is thought to be the day of great deals while shopping after Thanksgiving and nothing more. Popular stores such as American Eagle, Aeropostale, Hollister, and many other stores offer discounts on clothing, in hope of making a lot of money in a short amount of time. Eager customers nearly break down the doors of their favorite stores, in hopes of getting what they want before it is gone. Why is Black Friday even a thing? Black Friday represents the dreaded time when companies went into financial crisis, particularly the US gold market on September 24th of 1869. Two Wall Street financiers named Jay Gould and Jim Fisk teamed up to buy up as much as they could of the nation’s gold, hoping to raise the price an incredible amount and sell it for record-breaking profits. On that day in September the stock market was sent into free-fall and bankrupting everyone from Wall Street to the farmers.(History.com) The most common story behind Black Friday is related to stores and retail. According to the stories, after a whole year of operating “in the red” stores would finally earn a profit and “go into the black” on the day after Thanksgiving, because holiday shoppers spent a ton on discounted merchandise. So on Friday, November 25th, hit the shops and get a good deal!http://www.history.com/news/whats-the-real-history-of-black-friday

Students stress about SAT’sErika Romero – 12

The SAT, or the SAT Reasoning Test, causes a great amount of stress for juniors and seniors around the country. This exam is college recognized and essentially measures a person’s reasoning capabilities. Since it is such nationally recognized test, acceptance into colleges are heavily based on the score received. Many employers also ask for SAT scores as a basis for hiring.

The test itself does not contain overly difficult material. The math, reading, and grammar sections all contain information based on high-school level curriculums. The essay itself is only 25 minutes, and barely focuses on convention and sentence structure.

Overall, the SAT causes a great amount of stress simply because of the amount of knowledge it calls upon. The test itself can take upwards of three hours, and covers almost all subjects. Senior Leah Bertschy remarked that she went into the test feeling pumped, and left the testing center completely drained of energy.

Despite the reliance that a person’s future has on the SAT, it is not a pass or fail situation. While a score can decide on acceptance rates and scholarships, it is simply a measure of knowledge. Understanding that the Reasoning Test is based on common high school infor-mation, and is created for students of all types, can lead to impressive and notable scores.

Fall encourages new eye shadow looksGabby Krick – 10

Makeup is something growing by the minute in today’s society. From middle school students to elders, almost everyone is purchasing and using some sort of makeup product, no matter the age. Each season seems to have trends with makeup. Fall eye shadow palettes with beautiful fall shades have been very in at the moment.

Anyone into makeup knows there are affordable makeup products and pricier makeup products. Many of the pricier products tend to be better quality, but that is not always proven to

be true. It is possible to find a dupe to a pricier product so that money is not so much a issue. “Expensive products tend to last longer, but dupes can work just as well” Alexis says.

Pricier fall eye shadow palettes include the Morphe 350 priced at $22.99, the Anastasia Beverly Hills Palette priced at $45, the Tarte PRO Amazonian clay priced at $53 and the Morphe 35F Fall into Frost priced at $22.99. Each of these

palettes offers beautiful fall shades with up to 35 to choose from in the larger palettes. They are a bit pricier, but they are definitely worth the money.

Now the prices listed above are certainly not cheap for eye shadow. To save some money check these few dupes out for fall eye shadow palettes. Covergirl Goldens Trunaked priced at $13, Wet n Wild Comfort Zone priced at $4.99, e.l.f. Endless Eyes Pro Mini eye shadow priced at $7.00 and e.l.f Need it Nude eye shadow priced at $10.00. Each of these still offer beautiful fall shades just at lower prices which is never a bad thing.

Whether spending tons of money on these palettes is an option, or if saving money is a better route, there are palettes for either scenario. Katherine says “I use the two e.l.f. palettes and love them, but I definitely feel my Morphe 350 palette has lasted me much longer and works a bit better”. By using these recommendations the perfect fall eye shadow palette will be extremely easy to find and purchase. Use them and be prepared for the perfect fall eye shadow looks. Each palettes offers for multiple different looks making the expense on some of them all worth it.

Shawn Mendes releases new album

Julia Doklan - 10

Shawn Mendes released his second studio album Illuminate. The album dropped September 23, 2016. One of the first songs to go public was “Treat You Better.” This song has already been playing on radios and is on The Hot 100 on Billboard. There are 12 songs on the regular CD. The deluxe version includes 14 songs and an acoustic song. Mendes’ style has been compared to John Mayer. The 18-year-old singer started off on Vine in 2013. From there he began to rise to fame. He has three music videos off Illuminate so far. The “Treat You Better” music video has 291 million views. The others are “Ruin” and “Mercy.” They can be found on the ShawnMendesVEVO YouTube channel as well as live footage. His first album, Handwritten, was an acoustic sound. That album was released last year and included the hit song “Stitches.” Illuminate has the same general sound as the first album. The second album was produced by Jake Gosling, the same person who produces Ed Sheeran, One Direction and Lady Gaga. Many students have heard “Treat You Better” and “Stitches” on the radio. There are some students who like Shawn Mendes, but many do not follow his current music. “It was great, I love his album, and he has grown a lot since his first EP in 2014. All of his songs give off an Ed Sheeran vibe which i really enjoy” - Connor Perser For more information go to idolator.com and radio.com.

Thanksgiving brings the TurkeyKayla Wright- 9 The turkey is one of the biggest traditions for Thanksgiving in American households. Even though the turkey was not eaten on the first Thanksgiving dinner, there were animals close to it like fowl. It is a complete mystery to why most people eat this animal but there are many theories. One theory is because Benjamin Franklin thought the turkey should be the bird of the United States, even though it did not go into effect, it is a thought we eat the turkey because of this. In 1621 colonists hunted wild turkey during autumn and since turkey is a unique American bird, it gained interest as a main Thanksgiving meal. This started to catch on throughout the years and because of the size of the turkey and the amount of people it could feed, people started eating during this occasion. Almost every family celebrates Thanksgiving in America because of its important background to the nation and the way it changed and affected the country. The food during this holiday is one of the first things that would pop into a person’s head when they hear the word “Thanksgiving”. The turkey is very big and great for bringing a whole bunch of people together. Other popular foods during this holiday are mashed potatoes, corn, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and roles. The tradition of turkey has been around for a while and will continue on this holiday. For additional information visit http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/why-do-we-eat-turkey-on-thanksgiving.

Seasonal Fall ChangesAmanda McLaughlin - 9

As everyone can tell, the weather is getting colder and everyone is starting to dress a little warmer. Fall is the time of year when people start to enjoy the leaves falling and changing colors. The weather is getting down in the 40’s and 50’s and it is getting very chilly. Everyone is starting or has had their heat on due to the cold weather. Fall fashion is also very popular every year. Dark colors such as plum and burgundy are very popular fall colors. They come in lipsticks and different clothing. Everyone is getting their boots and scarves out for the cold weather as well. Thanksgiving is also coming up and everyone is getting ready to eat lots of tukey. Cora Brown, a freshman, says she is very excited for Thanksgiving and is ready to eat lots of food. This time of year is a very exciting time, where everyone’s family can come together inside and bond. Hot chocolate is very nice as well and good to drink next to the fire. Many school students are excited for the upcoming snow days so they can sit inside and watch netflix also. Fall is the perfect time of year.

What it is like to be a journalistEliza Moseman – 11

Karen Shuey, a journalist since 2008, and graduate of Cedar Crest High School and Temple University currently reports for the Reading Eagle. Shuey first thought of becoming a reporter in middle school, but it was not until her freshman year of high school when her English teacher suggested she join their school paper. Shuey gave some insight for the students considering the journalism field in and after college. She said the best and most rewarding part of her job is getting the opportunity to inspire action and motivation through her stories. The worst part, however, is the amount of work a journalist endures. The amount of projects that get thrown at a journalist makes it difficult to manage time for larger assignments. As for the students who are seriously considering journalism, she says that someone has to be in love with journalism and not the paycheck. Though some careers in journalism do pay quite well, it is not necessarily a six-figure paycheck.

Camp counselors re-experience sixth grade campKiara Mariano – 11

On October 12-14 a number of juniors and senior went to sixth grade camp at South Mountain Y.M.C.A. to help out the teachers and students on the trip. Each camp counselor has co-ed groups of 14-18 kids. Each group had both a boy and girl counselor in their day and night groups.

This trip is so the sixth graders can learn how to work together, build a trust and get to know one other. Some of the activities had the students cheer each other on like the rock wall. Everyone cheered on that person who was struggling to get up continue. Another activity was called team challenge. There were multiple mini games such as jumping through a rope under 15 seconds or getting through a hula hoop.

Veronica Crespo, junior, said “I enjoyed going back as a junior and participating. Watching the 6th graders problem solve and having fun was the most enjoyable. I understood more now than I did when I was in 6th grade. I was too excited to pay attention then”

Joey Dalton, junior, said, “Seeing the smiles on the sixth graders faces when they were doing projects. I can still be in high school and still can be a sixth grader deep down.”

Students contrast the SATs and PSATsAshley Lojko – 11

Some students do not know about taking the SATs earlier than necessary. In school, we take a day out of the year to take the PSATs during school hours. All sophomores and juniors must take this test, but it is up to them to schedule the SATs outside of school. Students register for the SATs on the College Board website, while choosing a date and location. The base test is $45, and there are other add-ons that cost more like the essay for the SAT and in-depth corrections.

Some students, including myself, have already taken the SATs this year in October. However, later that month, the entire sophomore and junior class took the PSATs, even though some of these students had already taken the test we were practicing for.

Kaylah Fisher, a junior who has taken the SATs in October stated, “I thought that the PSATs were much harder than the SATs.” After taking the SATs, I agree with her opinion of both tests. The PSATs are preparing us for the standardized test, and they make this test harder so the SATs does not seem as bad. Some of the students voiced their desire to take the SATs multiple times to see if they can get a better score the next time.

Shelby Levan discusses college experienceCarly Levan – 11

Shelby Levan graduated from Hamburg Area High School two years ago. When she was a student at Hamburg she ran track and cross country. Now she is a sophomore at Kutztown University and a member of the Kutztown Equestrian team. Her favorite parts of college are that the atmosphere is a lot more relaxed, the students’ speech is not censored, and most importantly she can go to Dunkin Donuts between classes to get coffee to get her through the day. However her least favorite part is that now she has a 20 minute drive to school instead of a five minute drive so she has to go to bed at an appropriate time. She said college is different from high school because, “There is a whole lot more freedom, but with that freedom comes loads of responsibilities. It is not anyone’s job to make you do the things you have to do so you have to be disciplined in order to do well.” If she could go back to high school she would change by being less shy and asked more questions. She also said, “I would have challenged not just myself but also my teachers to leave a more lasting impression on my education. Shout out to Kline for always being so enthusiastic and confident in his students.” Lastly, her advice to high school students is, “Everyone tells you that high school will be great and you’ll cherish those memories for a lifetime however while only some of that is true I believe that high school does not even come close to preparing you to what happens after you cross the stage. I would encourage any and all students in high school to do questionable things because that is the only way to answer whether or not it was the right thing to do and from that you learn and become the person you are meant to be. Don’t take high school dramatics seriously because in hindsight you were still just a child and it will fade away just as all of your childhood tantrums did when you were a toddler.”
