Lesson duration

Important teacher advice

Student prior knowledge

Students will need to know what a portfolio of information is and what it might be used for.

WALT - We are learning to...

Consider what an Australian football coach might want to know about an Asian country where his team will be playing matches.

We also participate in bingo research to gain an introduction to Asian countries.

WILF - What I’m looking for...

• I can recognise some symbols and images, customs and language from Asian countries.

• I can talk about and justify what an Australian football coach might want to know about Asian countries he will be travelling to with his team.

TIB - This is because...

It will help us decide the information that we need to include in the portfolio that will be presented to the coach at the end of the unit.

Lesson preparation

Prior to the lesson teachers should organise the following:

• Activity sheets 1.1 a-f - Japan/China/Korea Republic/Iran/Qatar/Uzbekistan Bingo research - hard copy of one country to each group or interactive pdf version on student computers, laptops or iPads.

• Activity sheet 1.2 - Teacher call out sheet - cut up into cards of information and placed in a box or container.

• Teacher information – Sample graphic organizer.

Visual resources available

The visual resource available to teachers for this lesson is:

• Video - Unit scenario - video outlining your student’s challenge for this unit.

• Video 1.1 - This is football - a brief introduction to football for those students and teachers unfamiliar with the sport - this video can also be used as a scene setter for this unit of work.

Lesson delivery

The following provides you with a suggested plan on how to deliver this lesson. You are encouraged to take a flexible approach and modify this lesson and its timings to suit the needs and abilities of your students.

1. Organise student teams (5 minutes)

Classes that have not completed Our respect rules - Values lesson

Divide the class into six teams. Teams should, where possible, consist of students who do not normally belong to the same friendship group. It is also recommended that each group has a mix of academic abilities and a spread of students with a familiarity of football.

Classes that have completed Our respect rules - Values lesson

If you set the scene for this unit by completing the optional Our respect rules - Values lesson student groups should remain the same as those that were formed during that lesson. These groups should remind themselves of the team rules that they agreed to by reading over their signed agreement.

teaching and learning plan

Unit pathways

There are a range of teaching pathways that you can take in this unit. It is recommended that you review the lesson-by- lesson Unit overview provided to assist you with your forward planning.

Assessment

The Assessment rubric should be discussed with students in the early stages of this unit. You may make changes to this rubric in line with the lessons you decide to cover.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), media and social media

The use of ICT, media and social media is encouraged in this unit. See ICT, media and social media opportunities for more information.

Asian music samples

Samples of Asian music are provided with this resource. See Asian music samples for ideas on how to use them.

The scenario

2. Outline scenario (5 minutes)

At the start of the lesson have the class watch the Video - Unit scenario and (or) read with them the following scenario on interactive whiteboard or projected on a data screen. Be sure to check your students’ level of understanding and clarify any words that are unfamiliar to them.

WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS ASIAN PORTFOLIO

Western Sydney Wanderers has qualified for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League competition. It will be playing up to six teams from Asia, between February and November, in its bid to try and become Asian champions.Your job is to produce an information portfolio about the Asian countries Western Sydney Wanderers will visit to play games. Your portfolio will be used by the coach and his team to help them prepare. You will need to compare Australian culture, language and lifestyle with those that Western Sydney Wanderers players will experience in Asia. In your portfolio you will need to provide ideas on how Western Sydney Wanderers can best acclimatise and prepare to play football in culturally, climatically and geographically diverse countries. The success of Western Sydney Wanderers depends on your report. The pressure is on so good luck.

teaching and learning plan

3. Assigning Asian countries (10 minutes)

Tell students that the AFC Asian Champions League draw has just been announced and Western Sydney Wanderers has been drawn to play teams from the following countries:

• Japan

• China

• Korean Republic

• Qatar

• Uzbekistan

• Iran.

Assign one of these countries to each student group. This can be done at random or by student choice.

4. An introduction to an Asian country - Playing bingo research (30 minutes)

In this activity students will be working together in their teams to identify answers on a bingo research activity sheet.

The information they will acquire from this activity will provide students with an introduction to the Asian country assigned to them.

Distribute Activity sheets 1.1 a-f - Japan/China/Korea Republic/Iran/Qatar/Uzbekistan Bingo research - hard copy to each team or interactive pdf version on student computers, laptops or iPads.

Teams should be given the bingo activity sheet of the Asian country they will be researching.

Cut up Activity sheet 1.2 - Teacher call out sheet, into cards and place them into a box or container.

When all groups have their bingo worksheets explain that the aim of this activity is to identify and mark (with a pencil on hard copy or tick in interactive pdf) any words, names or terms read out that are relevant to the country that they are researching.

Pull out the first card of information and read it to the class. It is at your discretion whether you re-read the information and how much time you wait before you read the next card. For greater student involvement you may ask groups to take turns reading cards.

Continue calling out information at random until all groups have their bingo worksheets fully marked. It is recommended that you organise call out cards to ensure that all teams complete their bingo worksheets at about the same time.

Once all their squares have been ticked the student group calls out their country name.

When all groups have completed their bingo cards tell them they will use them in the next lesson to conduct a deeper investigation.

5. What will be in the portfolio? (10 minutes)

Once students have had an introduction to their Asian country, brainstorm with them what information about it the Western Sydney Wanderers coach will want in their portfolio.

Set the scene by telling them that Western Sydney Wanderers will be travelling to Asia to compete and do the best they can. If they are going to successfully adjust to the conditions and lifestyle, what do they need to know?

Broaden student ideas by explaining to them that teams travelling to Asia to play football will be away for up to two weeks. Whilst focused on football, players and coaches will also be getting involved in many non-football activities. They will be interacting with many people and learning about Asian culture.

Use a graphic organiser (See: Teacher information – Sample graphic organiser) to record student responses on the board.

Student responses may include information about the Asian country’s:

• History, folklore and mythology

• Climate and weather (remind students that Asian Champions League games will be played between February and November)

• Geography

• Currency

• Language

• Food

• Football

• Customs

• Laws

• Cultural and social activities

• People

• Capital city

• Lifestyle.

Once students have exhausted responses tell them that in the next lesson they will be deciding, as a class, which of their suggestions will be included in their portfolio to the coach.
